Evolution of Broad-Band
The confluence of 2 forces Globalization of business
and the networking of information technology - has
created the internet economy
The new economy is defining how people do business,
communicate, shop, have fun, learn and live on a global
basisCONNECTING ANYONE, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME
As the internet market continues to explode, the demand
for greater bandwidth and faster connection speeds has
led to the need to provide broadband access to the end
users.

TRAI DEFINITION OF BROADBAND

An always-on data connection
interactive services including

supporting

Internet access and has the capability of the

minimum download speed of 256 kilo bits per
second (kbps) to an individual subscriber from the
Point Of Presence (POP) of the service provider.

The interactive services will exclude any services

for which a separate licence is specifically
required,
for
example,
real-time
voice
transmission, except to the extent that it is
presently permitted under ISP licence with Internet
Telephony.

ADVANTAGES OF BROADBAND
Always on (Not a Shared Media)
Fast (speed ranging from 256 kbps to 2 Mbps)
No disconnection
No additional access charge
Telephone and Data simultaneously
Fat Pipe has to be continuously supplemented
with value added applications to enjoy the
advantage.

WIRED BROADBAND TECHNOLOGIES

Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL)
Cable Modem (CM)
Fiber Technology (FITL)
Power line Broadband(BPL)

For internal circulation of BSNL only

DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE (DSL)

Digital Subscriber line (DSL) is a wire line
transmission technology that brings data and
information faster over copper telephone lines
already installed in homes and business.
DSL exploits "extra capacity" to carry information
on the wire without disturbing the line's ability to
carry conversations.

xDSL FAMILY TREE

xDSL
Symmetric DSL
Provide identical data rates upstream & downstream
Asymmetric DSL
Provide relatively lower rates upstream but higher
rates downstream
Types of xDSL :

HDSL - High data rate Digital Sub: Line

SDSL - Symmetrical Digital Sub: Line
ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Sub: Line
IDSL - ISDN Digital Sub: Line
VDSL - Very-high-data-rate Digital Sub: Line
For internal circulation of BSNL only

SDSL
Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line
Used typically for business applications
such as video conferencing.
The data rate in both directions is equal.

For internal circulation of BSNL only

ADSL
Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line
Used primarily by residential users who receive a
lot of data but do not send much such as Internet
surfers.
ADSL provides faster speed in a downstream
direction (from the telephone central office to the
customers premises) than upstream (from
customers premise to the telephone central
office).
For internal circulation of BSNL only

HDSL
High Data Rate Digital Subscriber Line
Provides fixed symmetrical high-speed access
at T1 rate (1.5 Mbps).
Designed for business purposes

For internal circulation of BSNL only

VDSL
Very High Data Rate Digital Subscriber Line
Provides both symmetrical and asymmetrical
access with very high bit rate over the copper
line.

For internal circulation of BSNL only

IDSL
ISDN Digital Subscriber Line
Provides
symmetrical
connection
with
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).
Designed to extend DSL to locations with a
long distance to a telephone central office.

For internal circulation of BSNL only

DSLAM
Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer.
Equipment located at a phone companys central
office (CO).
Links many customer DSL connections over
existing copper telephone lines to a single highspeed ATM line.

For internal circulation of BSNL only

DSLAM
Intermixes voice frequency signals and high-speed
DSL data traffic into a customers DSL line.
Separates incoming phone and data signals and
directs them onto the appropriate carriers network.
Voice calls are sent to the PSTN, and data are
sent to the DSLAM.
DSLAM is connected to Internet Backbone for
access to World Wide Web and other applications.

BSNLS BROADBAND ACCESS TECHNOLOGY

BSNL has a world class, multi-gigabit, multiprotocol, convergent IP infrastructure The NIB.
BSNL Broadband service provides convergent
services through this backbone network.
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL)
Technology is used for giving the Broadband
connection where greater download is required in
comparison to upload.

EFFECT OF COPPER PAIR QUALITY

Data speed capability depends on
thickness of wire used in cable network.

the

Higher the gauge, higher the data carrying

speed.
Data speed deteriorates if copper loop quality
is bad i.e. more joints, loose joints, low
insulation etc.

BSNL Broadband Vs Cable Modem Service

Cable Modem (internet service given by Cable TV
operators) offers shared bandwidth.
Speed is asymmetric and will vary depending on the
number of people on the network.
With high-speed Internet access that uses DSL
service, one gets a dedicated connection to the
home.
The performance of DSL based service depends on
the distance between end user and phone company
central office.

How BSNL VOD is better than DTH?

BSNL VoD
The set-top box is like a DVD player.
The viewer can select a movie from the list and
view it at his / her desired time and day, pause
it, rewind it, forward it .
Can have exactly the same experience as
viewing from a personalized DVD player.

For internal circulation of BSNL only

How BSNL VOD is better than DTH?

DTH
Request for VOD has to be registered through
some other means than the Set top Box .
Limited number of movies are broadcasted and
the viewers have to choose among them
Movies are telecast at predefined timings.

SOME CONCEPTS
Single User (SU):
Only one PC can be connected to BSNL Broadband connection.

Multi User (MU):

Customer is allowed to share one BSNL broadband connection among
multiple PCs

Static IP address:
For many services such as video conferencing, VPN etc. a fixed IP known as
Static IP is required.

Dynamic IP:
For normal Internet browsing, the customer does not require static IP. BSNL
allocates temporary IP address to the customer when a session is initiated.

SPEED CHECK
Customer is assured of promised speed.
Customer can check speed for their connection at
link http://www.dataone.in/.
The check is performed by measuring the speed of
a file transfer.
The file transfer is counted towards download limit.
