Solution-Focused Communication (2 Days)
Welcome Hall, Devonport, Portsmouth
Tired of getting stuck looking at the problem? This two-day course will leave you thinking and working in a powerful
new way. It may change your life. The ideas, values and skills of solution-focused communication are helpful to
anyone who works with people: the focus moves away from the problem towards preferred futures, progress
already made, strengths and possibilities. The power of this approach has long been evidenced in helping services,
community work and schools, but is becoming recognised also in staff/human resource management and
coaching, and organisational development. This 2-day course offers new communication skills and promotes
personal development, and will be useful to anyone who works with people – particularly those who support others
through problems (e.g. workers in social care and housing support settings, mental health workers, community
workers and health staff) and staff/team/organisation managers etc. Please note that Day 2 will take place on 29

Confronting the Public Health Crisis Global issues, local action
Bournemouth International Centre
The UK Public Health Association has chosen the South West for the Annual Public Health Forum taking place in
March 2010. The South West is leading the way in collaborative working on combating climate change and
promoting sustainable development and is delighted to be welcoming the UKPHA Annual Forum in 2010. Although
Dorset is one of the healthiest counties in England, Bournemouth and Poole experience some of the starkest
differences in life expectancy within its boundaries. The public health community are dedicated to reducing these
inequalities and are eager to share with and learn from their colleagues across the country. By taking part in this
national Public Health forum in the South West you will have the opportunity to network with colleagues from
across the public health spectrum. To encourage a healthy delegate contingent from the South West region, there
is a special South West promotion with a group discount of one free delegate place for every five paying places
booked together by one organisation. Further information: http://www.ukpha.org.uk/annual-public-health-

Stress Management
Welcome Hall, Devonport, Portsmouth
"Working in helping services is inherently stressful. Helpers can expect to deal with a variety of stressors in carrying
out their work from day-to-day, and no experienced helper expects the job to be stress-free. However, it is not
healthy, helpful or sustainable for a worker to hold high levels of stress without opportunities to deal with it and
reduce it. This highly interactive one-day workshop explores work-related stress in the helping context, offering an
understanding of the triggers of stress and a range of accessible approaches that can help individual workers, and
organisations as a whole, manage and minimise this stress. The workshop brings a wealth of information and
ideas, including recent breakthroughs in our knowledge of the brain, and takes a solution-focused approach to
tackling stress. Participants have the opportunity to discuss stress with colleagues: comparing their experiences
and challenges, offering each other ideas on what works, and collectively identifying potential for further
developments in how their organisation thinks about and manages stress."

Patient Information Forum - Moving Beyond Leaflets
Aston Villa Football Club, Birmingham
The last decade has seen some far reaching changes in the way information is developed, produced and shared.
There was a time when information was all about the leaflet and access to these was through ‘gatekeepers’ like
GPs and nurses. All that is changing. Although there is still a need for the paper based written word, far reaching
changes in technology are now fundamentally changing the way people access and use information. Information
producers are changing too - user-led, audience specific, multi-format resources are now the norm for many. This
fifth annual Patient Information Forum (PiF) conference looks at that changes that are taking place in consumer
health information.

Money Management for Vulnerable People
Inmarsat, 99 City Road, London EC1
Poor money management leads many vulnerable people into significant difficulties with debt, often resulting in the
loss of a tenancy - making even tougher a life already beset with challenges. More knowledge about financial
matters and a better attitude to money can help vulnerable people create security, increased independence and
participation in the community, and the ability to make choices and plan for the future – making the most of life’s
opportunities more than just ‘getting by’.

The Implications of the Marmot Review: Developing A New Health Inequalities Strategy
Westminster, London
Providing health equality is essential in not only delivering a fair and just society but ensuring people have the
opportunity to reach their full potential. Going beyond the previously set national targets to reduce the gap in infant
mortality and life expectancy rates, the Government commissioned Professor Sir Michael Marmot to undertake a
major review of health inequalities. Throughout the day delegates will have the chance to engage with the panel,
investigating key issues. The morning session of this Policy and Practice Briefing will provide delegates with a
forum to review the newly published report, consider its implications and discuss the way ahead in tackling health
inequalities. The afternoon will be highly interactive, investigating successful local examples of addressing health
inequalities and offering practical solutions to the challenges faced by service providers and users.

Negotiation Skills - for Commissioners, Providers and Managers (Day 1 of 2)
Central London
This is a two Day course and the second day takes place on 20th July 2010. There is a tremendous challenge in
providing excellent public services under intense financial pressure. At the same time there is a need to make the
emerging markets a reality in the public-service sector. It is important, not only to provide services today, but also
to build capacity for the future. In order to rise to these challenges, excellent negotiation skills are required; skills in
building agreements which truly address the needs of commissioning bodies, providers and all other stakeholders.
Good negotiators can build agreements which deliver the needed results, while also building good relations for the
future. Solutions Focused negotiation is all about creating agreements both sides want to keep, while building good
relations, and not wasting any time in the process. It is built around "MAGIC" - a structure that makes negotiation
quick, easy and enjoyable to learn. It is a way of going about seeking solutions which are better for both sides.
People often report dramatic increases in their negotiation results and confidence after training in the MAGIC
negotiation model.
