Ball mill inspection

Inspection during
operation
Key benefits
- Root cause analysis
- Performed during both normal
operation and standstill
- Performed by highly experienced FLSmidth specialists
- Optimal mill availability
- Uninterrupted production
- More predictable maintenance
costs
- Knowledge-sharing with
maintenance staff
- Recommendations for process
improvements

FLSmidth uses its many years of

experience and the knowledge gained
from installing almost 4000 ball mills
around the world to carry out essential
ball mill inspections.
An inspection by FLSmidth service
specialists with in-depth process
knowledge is your best guarantee for
ensuring optimal, trouble-free operation.
Periodic checks of wear and tear are an
absolute must for maintaining a high,
reliable mill run factor.
We are experienced in inspecting both
FLSmidth and non-FLSmidth ball mills.
In order to evaluate the condition of your
ball mill, it is necessary to collect data
during both operation and standstill.
This allows our specialists to get a clear
picture of potential problem areas, as
well as important information for postinspection analysis and evaluation.
Obtaining data
Ball mill specialists check every process
and mechanical aspect of the ball mill
system, including:

Monitoring & diagnosing

Process specialists evaluate:
- Material feed
- Pressure, flow and temperature across
the ball mill and separator circuit
- Ball mill charge/level
- Crash stop and metre samples
analysis
In addition, the mill trunnion and girth
gear temperature is measured using a
non-contact type thermometer to analyse
the condition of these components.
The inspection also includes electronic
data logging and an evaluation of the
hydraulic system and lubrication units.

Training session
In addition to the mill
inspection, we also offer a
two-day training session for
hydraulic and lubrication
pump station operation and
troubleshooting. The session
consists of theoretical as well
as practical training.

Inspection
of the
gear

To get a detailed picture of the mills overall condition, including parts that need to
be replaced, it is important to carry out
an external and internal inspection during
standstill. This allows specialists to detect
potential threats before they become a
problem, such as:
- Hydraulic and lubrication problems
- Cracks in ball mill internals

The separator is an essential part of the

mill installation. It is important that it is
checked regularly and that any necessary
repairs are carried out immediately to
maintain overall mill performance.

FLSmidths specialists use intricate

vibration measurements to get an
accurate overview of the ball mills gear.
The inspection also includes temperature
and back lash measurement.

The inspection includes an examination

of the overall condition of the separator,
including a check of wear on the rotor
and guide vanes.

Additionally, FLSmidth specialists check

the water injection system and measure
tolerances between the slide shoe and
slide ring with feeler gauges.

Final report
When inspections of mill components
have been carried out, our specialists
provide a final comprehensive technical
evaluation and analysis report, as well as
recommendations for repairs, spare parts,
adjustments and optimisations.
The report is an essential document to
help production and maintenance
departments plan future maintenance
activities, such as ensuring that the right
spare parts are available, and most
importantly avoid unscheduled, costly
shutdowns.

The report covers the condition

of all mill components:
- Mill body
- Bearings
- Mill internals and diaphragm
- Girth gear drive
- Hydraulic and lubrication units
- Mill internals
In addition, the report includes evaluation
of grinding efficiency, separator efficiency
and feed analysis.
If required, were available to
stay and carry out the recommended
adjustments and repairs.
