Year 7: Mathematics Key Homework Term 2

Name: _______________ Form: _______ Teacher: ______

Hand this on or before:________________

This homework is designed to give students the opportunity to use and apply Mathematics
previously learnt to solve a more complex problem.

Please remember to start this as soon as it is set so that you have enough time to
ask for help if you need it.

You will be trying to find a connection between the area and the number of dots on the
perimeter of different dotty shapes. Ideally, you will be able to say how many dots will be
on the perimeter of any dotty shape provided you know how many dots there are inside it
and what its area is.

Here are some dotty shapes with one dot in the middle.
Dotty shapes page2 of 4

1. On dotty paper, draw at least 2 more shapes with one dot in it.

2. Find the area of each shape and the number of dots on its perimeter (Level 3)

3. Record your findings systematically.

Draw a table like this one to help you: (Level 4)
Shape number Area (A) in cm² Perimeter (P)
in number of dots
1 4 8
2
3
4
5

4. Plot your results the attached graph (Level 4)

The first one is plotted for you

5. Join your points up with a straight line. (Level 4)

Remember to extend the line beyond your points

6. What have you noticed? Can you write a rule in words? (Level 5)

7. If A = area of the shape in cm² and P= the number of dots on the perimeter of the
shape, can you write an algebraic rule?
Can you write one A= and one P= ? (Level 5)

8. Write your rule along the line you drew on the graph paper.
Remember to include the number of dots inside the shape eg D= ___; Rule: …

9. Can you use your rule to predict how many dots there will be on the perimeter of a
shape if it has one dot in the middle and an area of 6 cm². (Level 5)

10. Repeat this process (steps 1 to 9) with at least 5 shapes with two dots in the
middle (towards Level 6)

11. Now try with 3 dots in the middle, 4 dots in the middle etc.

12. BEFORE you draw one, can you predict what the rule will be for 5 dots in the
middle? Check your prediction by drawing some.

13. Can you find a general rule (and show that it works) that links the number of dots
inside the shape (D) with the area of the shape (A) and the number of dots on its
perimeter (P)? (level 7)

14. What do you notice about the line graphs you have drawn?
Hint: what is the same and what is different about the lines (level 6)

15. Can you explain why your rule works? (level 7)

Peer Teacher
I have 3
• drawn some dotty shapes
• written down the area and the
number of dots on the perimeter of
some of them
I have: 4
• correctly drawn a table and filled in
the correct area and the number of
dots on the perimeter of each of the
shapes drawn.
• Plotted results on the graph
I have: 5
• found a rule linking the area and
dots on the perimeter of the shape.
• Written my rule in algebra
• Shown that my rule works
• Predicted what the results would be
for a new shape
I have: 6
• extended the problem and found
more rules for shapes with different
number of dots inside.
• Commented on the graphs of my
results
I have: 7
• found a rule linking A, P and D
• explained why the rule works
