BBB: Protect Yourself

from CrecIt Card Fraud
Part # 1· What You
Should Do JSO
Credit card fraud costs
cardholders and issuers
hundreds of millions of
dollars each year. It is not
always possible to prevent
such fraud, but there are
some steps that can be
taken to make it more diffi
cult fur a crook to steal card
numbers.
The Better Business
Bureau (BBB) Serving Mis
sissippi offers these tips of
things to do in order to help
protect yourself from credit
card fraud:
• Sign your cards as soon
as they arrive.
• Carry your cards sepa
rately from your wallet.
• Keep a record of your
account numbers, expira
tion dates, and phone num
bers for the companies issu
ing cards.
• Keep an eye on your
card during transactions
and retrieve it as quickly as
possible.
• Void any incorrect
receipts.
• Destroy any carbon and
carbon copies.
• Save receipts to com
pare with billing state
ments.
• Reconcile account
statements promptly.
• Report any question
able charges promptly and
in writing to the card issuer.
• Notify card companies
of address changes in
advance.
• Report stolen or lost
cards promptly.
"If you lose your card,
or if you realize it has been
stolen, immediately call the
issuers, Many companies
have toll-free numbers and
24-hour service to deal with
such emergencies," said Bill
Moak, President/CEO of
the Mississippi BBB.

Contractor board offers consumer tips
Atways check with the Mississippi State Board of
Contractors In Jackson to find out if a contractor is licensed.
The board says consumers should always get a signed
contract for home construction or repairs. Items that should
be included in the contract:
• The contractor's complete information, including the
company name, address, phone number and the full
name and license number of the builder/ contractor and
the sal~sperson .
• A detailed description of the work to be done,
Including specifics on materials such as color, quantity,
size, model number, brand name and product.
• 'the contract price, or the exact dollar amount the
contractor will be owed at the completion of a ll work
listed In the contract.
• A payment schedule should be the amount of work
completed, with retention (the percentage of each
payment or of the total jOb that you retain you until the
job is completed): should include all payments to be
made to subcontractors and suppliers as well.
• The start completion dates for work to be done that
allows for any reasonable delays, including a clause
that allows you to withhold payment if work slows down
for no apparent reason.
• A statement that all building permits and variances
required by your city, state and county will be obtained
by the contractor before work begins.
• A guarantee that the contractor carries liability
insurance and has workers' compensation coverage.
• A statement of warranty that addresses whether
labor and materials are guaranteed, and for how long,
with the names and addresses of the ·parties honoring
the warranties.
• A statement that the contractor is responsible for
cleanup and removal of debris and materials, as well
as instructions regarding pets, children or areas where
materials may not be stored.
• A right-to-cancel clause declaring the time frame
in which you may cancel after the contract has been
signed, along with any penalties that you may apply
when canceling after work has begun .

individuals have provided bank

have wired money. According to
every report, that fee is the only
money that ever changes hands. II

Prepaid calling cards may

While avoiding being ripped off.
!'tepaid phone cards are wide

for one-time use and can be
thrown away when the minutes
are used up. Others can be

According to the Federal Trade

advice for getting the most for

maintenance fees and any fees
that might vary based on where
you arc calling to and calling
from.
Find out the rates for both
domestic and intcmarional calls.
Ile wary if the rates aren't posted

Compare rates. but don ~t be
immediately sold by a low rate.
Very low rates may be enticing,
but they should also serve as a

Check p'lCkaging. The card

sure the protective coating cover
