Ranging fromA+ to F, the let-
ter grade system, replaces a less-
detailed scale of "satisfactory"
or "unsatisfactory," represents
the BBB's degree of confidence
that the business is operating in
atnrshvorthy manner and is will-
ing to make a good faith effort to
resolve customer concerns.
Consumers can research the
grades of Mississippi businesses
by reviewing BBB Reliability

ReportsTM, which are available
online and free of charge at
http://www.ms.bbb.org.
In addition to noting a letter
grade, BBB Reliability Reports
also include details about in-
tegrity and performance, such
as the number of complaints a
business has received, the com-
pany's response to co~nplaints
and details on any government
actions against the business.

bad buying decisions." said

consumers by providing infor-
mation as they make major
~urchasing,charitable, giving
or investment decisions. "The
most important New Year's
resolution you can make is to
contact the BBB--. before mak-
ing major financ~aldecisions
and before responding to any
enticing (unsolicited) offers,"

Top I0 Resolutions
(I) Resolve to get all
promises in writing. Make
sure the contract provisions
match what the salesperson
told you. Read and understand
the contract and guarantee
before you sign.
(2) Resolve to guard your
personal information. Give
out credit card, bank account,
or Social Security numbers
very cautiously. Be wary of
phone calls, mail or omail
mcssages asking for such
information.
(3) Resolve to help chi)-
dren become informcd con-
sumers. Counsel them on
establishing a budget, help
them spot signs of fraudfrip
offs, inform them about online
privacy and security issues.
(4) Resolvc to shop safely
online. Cyberspace crooks
have the potential to perpetu-
ate'scams quickly on the web -
leaving no paper trails and
bypassing geographical
boundaries.
(5) Resolve to resist the
lure of "easy money". If you
arc contemplating work-from-
home opportunities, do your
homework. Verify their prom-
ises such as "fast money", "no
expe,icncc necessary," and
"work from the comfort of
your home". Get rcferences,

informed investor. Scam
artists tailortheir investment
pitches well to entice unsus-
pecting investors. Avoid any
pitchcs that require you to
"act or that "guarantee"
unbelievable profits.
(7) Resolve to formalize
a savings plan. Dctermine
how much you need to bol-
ster your financial cushion
and develop a plan to achieve
your goal.
(8) Resolve to tackle
your debt load. Establish a
debt repayment plan for the
year - and kecp strict records.

monthly debt payments.

Shoppers (for temporary
positions).
No company name is given in
the advertisements, and victimJob-
seekers report no company name
is provided on the phone. Within
a week. the candidate receives a
package in the mail that explains
they have been aclected to
participate in the Master Research
program.In the package isacheck
shopper scam
process".
The participants are advised to
go to Wal-Mart and wire money
to a person in Canada. They are
ins~ruc~ed that, as a participant,
they can keep $300 for their
services: Consumers havereported
lossesas greatas$7,990as aresull
ofcashingthesefraudulentchecks.
The checks are falsely issued
under a real financial institution
(Chesapeake Bank); but the
address and phone ~ ~ u n i b eare

bogus. Upon calling the toll-free
number, the BBB discovered a
bogus ''collections" agency who
acknowledged Master Research
as a "credible client." The BBB
representative was asked if she
needed to verify a checknumber.
The BBB has been alertcd that the
FBI has had an open investigation
onMaster Research since April of
2007.
The BBB offers the following
tips to help you avoid being
swindled by fake chzck scams:
- Be suspicious of any checks
fromindividualsor businesses that
you do not know.
Independently verify that the
check is drawn from an actual
account at a legitimate financial
institution.
- Do not rely on the telephone
number listed on thc check. Use
directory assistance to get the

institution and call them to verify
the check.

Vietnam Veteran serving
two tours in Vietnam and
r e t i r e d f r o m the 9 7 2 n d
Army National Guard after
serving his country for 26
years. During his service,
he received many military
honors.
He was p r e c e d e d i n
death by his son, John S.
Drake, Jr., in December,
2008; his parents, Fern
and Jack Drake of Chari-
ton, lowa; his sister, Carol
Parker of Texas; and his
brother, Bobby Drake of
lowa.
He is survived by his four
children, Kelly Caven of
Deland, F l o r i d a , K e i t h
Caven and daughter-in-law,
Michelle of Deland, Florida,

daughter. Heather Drakeof
