Course Objectives:

To introduce students to the scientific principles of water resource engineering

To describe the irrigation techniques and structures used in India and other countries.

To understand the design concepts of hydro structures and functioning of hydro


resources.

Unit I
Hydrology and Abstractions from precipitation : Definition of Hydrology,
Precipitation, Forms of Precipitation, Measurement of precipitation, Presentation of
rainfall data, Raingauge network, Interception, Evaporation, Factor affecting
evaporation, Measurement of evaporation, Depression storage
Infiltration : Measurement of Infiltration by Infiltrometer, Infiltration indices, Runoff,
Estimation of design peak rate of runoff, Stream flow measurement techniques.
Unit II
Hydrograph : Introduction, Effect of basin shape on hydrograph, Components of
hydrograph, Base flow separation
Unit hydrograph : Use and limitation of unit hydrograph, Derivation of unit
hydrograph, Synthetic unit hydrograph, Instantaneous unit hydrograph, Introduction
to Ground Water Hydrology
Unit III
Irrigation techniques and quality of irrigation water : Definition of irrigation,
Necessity of irrigation in India, Disadvantages and ill effects of irrigation, Types of
irrigation, Techniques of water distribution in farms, Quality of irrigation water
Water requirements of crops : Crop period or base period, Duty and delta of a
crop, Crop seasons and Indian agriculture, Optimum utilisation of irrigation water,
Irrigation efficiencies, Consumptive use or evapotranspiration (Cu), Effective Rainfall
(Re), Consumptive Irrigation Requirement (CIR), Net Irrigation Requirement (NIR),
