U30B PHASE II Locomotives MASTER

JULY 2012 ANNOUNCEMENT
Powered by a V16 FDL prime mover, the 3,000 h.p. U30B was GEs answer to EMDs popular GP40 and ALCOs
C430 Locomotive. A total of 295 U30Bs were built by GE between 1966 and 1975.
This model represents a late phase 2 U30B locomotive. The primary spotting feature of phase 2 units was
the hood below the radiator, which was evenly built out to the same width as the radiator. A U30B could be
differentiated from the lower-horsepower U23B by the presence of two sets of four tall engine access doors near
the center of the long hood. During production, the U30B was equipped with various trucks, including Blomberg
trucks from EMD trade-in locomotives, AAR-style trucks, or GEs own four-axle FB2 truck.
Norfolk & Western owned the most phase 2 U30Bs with a total of 75 units; all included a high short hood. Other
major owners included C&O, Frisco and Western Pacific. While some U30Bs found homes on other railroads
after being retired by their initial owner, very few examples of this model are still in service today.

RS-3/RSD-4/5 Locomotives

CLASSIC

SEPTEMBER 2012 ANNOUNCEMENT

Well over 1,300 RS-3 road-switcher locomotives were built by ALCO between 1950 and 1956. It can be considered one of the most successful four-axle diesel road-switchers ever produced by the builder. These 1,600hp
locomotives were powered by an ALCO 244 V-12 engine which was complemented by rugged GE electrical
components. The RS-3 was truly a versatile locomotive. It could be found in virtually every type of service
from passenger and commuter runs to heavy-haul and local freight assignments. Original owners of the RS-3
tended to be in the eastern and central regions of the US (with heavier concentrations in the northeast and
southeast).
During this same time-period, ALCO offered a six-axle road-switcher which was more commonly found in the
west. The RSD-4/5 was externally very similar to the RS-3, having six-axle trucks as an obvious spotting feature.
They produced the same 1,600hp as an RS-3, but offered increased tractive effort due to the use of a larger
generator. Many RSD-4/5s were assigned to operate in mountainous territory (with varying degrees of success)
on the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and the Utah Railway.

ALUMINUM COAL GONDOLAS

AUGUST 2012 ANNOUNCEMENT

Transporting coal on the railways has been around as long as the railways. Two major types of cars emerged
for hauling coal; hoppers and gondolas. The earlier cars were made of wood, then steel, and later aluminum.
The lighter weight of aluminum allows greater lading and cubic foot capacities ideal for bulk minerals transport. By the 1980s, both coal hoppers and coal gondolas were using aluminum bodies in their construction.
The Trainman aluminum coal gondola model represents a typical Association of American Railroads car type
code J311, a gondola car with a load limit greater than 185,000 lbs, depressed bottom, and 36 to 48 interior
length. Typical of these cars is the rotary coupler usually signified by a contrasting color on one or both ends.
The Trainman model has thirteen side stakes and a double tub bottom. Gross Rail Loading is rated at 286,000
lbs.
