2. Frictional forces
Friction acts parallel to the contact surface and opposes the
motion of the object.

Example 9
A 40 kg box accidentally slides down a ramp and onto a level
surface. On this surface, the box is initially moving at 9.0 m s-1

push the box to prevent it from smashing the window. The force

the horizontal. (The man moves backward while exerting a

The centre of mass moves as though all the mass were
