05. Introduction
Satellites are launched into space to provide services such as communications, telemetry,
remote sensing, surveillance, and so on. They are designed according to their intended
applications. They may be classified as communications satellites, navigation satellites,
reconnaissance satellites, or remote sensing satellites. According to the orbit that they are in,
they are also classified as LEO satellites, sun-synchronous orbit satellites, and geosynchronous
satellites. Based on size, satellites are categorized as large, medium-sized, mini, micro, nano,
pico, and femto.
We expect the global satellite manufacturing and launch market to grow at a CAGR of 5.14%
during the forecast period. In 2014, the Americas led the market with a share of 35.72%, followed
by EMEA with a share of 34.87% and APAC with a share of 29.41%.
The growing utilization of satellites for military surveillance and other defense applications has
been pushing market growth. Along with the growing use of UAVs and modern equipment, the
military also needs more data bandwidth and reliable communication infrastructure. The
demand for these satellites for commercial applications such as GPS services and the Internet
has also increased. Increased demand for satellite-based telemetry applications also
contributes to market growth.
However, there are many design and manufacturing complexities associated with satellites.
They need to be reliable and capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of their launch and
the extreme environments of outer space while also considering the prohibitive cost, safety, and
certification requirements for the design and build. Budget cuts in the military and defense
sector, which is one of the primary end users of satellites, especially in Europe and the US, also
hamper market growth. The increase of space debris is another hindrance in the market.
The development of all-electric propulsion systems for satellites and reusable space launch
vehicles will contribute significantly to market growth. The use of nano and microsatellites in the
development of low-cost satellite-based Internet services will also open up opportunities for the
market. 3D printing technology is expected to give market growth considerable traction. Its use
in the building of satellite parts and components will reduce costs significantly and even enable
the construction of miniaturized satellite components in space, eliminating the need to launch
from Earth.

The emergence of nano and microsatellites has helped the market grow in terms of number of
satellites. However, they currently constitute only a small portion of the market in terms of
revenue.

As per historical space launch events, current market insights, and future space launch
schedules, the share of the space launch market will likely decline in 2016 and 2017. However,
the market is expected to rebound in 2018 and 2019, especially because of the increased
number of space launch activities in Kazakhstan, the US, and French Guiana. China is also
planning the launch of several satellites by 2019, primarily for maritime surveillance missions.
These satellites are intended for use in the monitoring of ships, drilling platforms, coastal
resources, and assessing and analyzing natural disasters.

Threat of Substitutes
(Low)
Along with advances in
technology, the use of
satellites has also grown
among users ranging from
communications to
telemetry. The market has
been growing, which
decreases the threat of
substitutes (such as ground
based systems, e.g., GBAS).
Threat of Rivalry
(High)
There is strong competition
among existing satellite
manufacturers in terms of
cost of products and
advances in technology.
Bargaining Power of
Buyers
(Moderate)
There are many vendors that
provide satellite systems,
materials, and parts.
However, buyers do not have
control over product costs.

(ocean buffer zone reduces risks related to launching over populated areas). Many Russian and
European rockets have been launched from this site.
Israel, Saudi Arabia, and UAE are some of the major markets in the Middle East. Africa is currently
a small market and lacks adequate technological capabilities and infrastructure. However, it is
likely that Africa will become one of the important markets for low-cost satellite-based Internet
services in the near future. An increase in demand for communication and other satellite-based
services will also drive the potential of the market.

Satellite Launch Center for future commercial satellite launches. Along with the strengthening
economy, China has also made efforts to develop its space capabilities. The country's Long
March 5 and Long March 7 rockets are capable of launching payloads of up to 25 tons and 13.5
tons, respectively, and are expected to make the first flight in 2016.
India has also been pushing extensively for the development of its space capabilities. Satish
Dhawan Space Center of ISRO is the major satellite launch station in India. The country is also
allowing an increasing number of private players to enter the satellite manufacturing market.
This has paved the way for the rise of companies such as Dhruva Space, which is the first private
company in India to manufacture satellites. The company focuses on the development,
assembly, testing, and operation of small indigenous satellite platforms. This move is expected to
further open the market for new entrants, and increase the competition, innovation, and
development of the industry. India has mainly been targeting the communications satellite
business, as there is huge demand for such satellite services.
