(a) An object is projected with initial speed v at angle with the horizontal.

Derive an equation for the path of the projectile.

(b) The diagram below shows a jeep travelling at constant speed 10 m s-1 towards a
security post.

A security guard holding his rifle 15 m above the ground shoots horizontally when the jeep is
0.7 km from the security post. The bullet of the rifle strikes the jeep. Calculate
(i)

the time taken by the bullet to strike the jeep,

the distance of the jeep from the security post when it is struck,

4 (a)(i) State Newtons Law of Universal Gravitation.

(ii) Hence show that GM = gR2 where G is the universal gravitational constant, g is the
acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the Earth , M is the Earths mass and R is the
Earths radius.

(b) Show that the speed of satellites orbiting very close to the surface of the Earth has a speed

(c) (i) A geosynchronous satellite is a satellite that appears stationary relative to a point on the
Earth. One of the properties is that its period of rotation must equal the period of rotation of
the Earth. State two other properties of a geosynchronous satellite.

(a)

(i) State two assumptions of an ideal gas.

( i i i ) A 0.35 m3 gas tank contains 7.0 kg of butane gas. Assuming that the gas
behaves as an ideal gas, calculate its pressure at 27 oC.

(ii) Write an expression relating the total kinetic energy E of a gas molecule to the
number of degrees of freedom f. Explain any other symbols used.
