PROJECT OVERVIEW
Just out of college, you decide to open a photography studio. Before you begin, you need to
evaluate what you think your monthly expenses will be. Youve started a workbook, but need to
complete the entries and add formulas.

STUDENT START FILE

IL_Excel2010_UB_IC1b_FirstLastName_1.xlsx (Note: Download your personalized start file
from www.cengage.com/sam2010)

Instructions
1. Open the file IL_Excel2010_UB_IC1b_FirstLastName_1.xlsx and save the file as
IL_Excel2010_UB_IC1b_FirstLastName_2.xlsx before you move to the next step. Verify
that your name appears in cell B4 of the Documentation sheet. (Note: Do not edit the
Documentation sheet. If your name does not appear in cell B4, please download a new copy
of the start file from the SAM Web site.)
2. Switch to the Sheet1 worksheet. In the range C4:C10, enter the data shown in column 2 of
Table 1.

3. Create a formula in cell D4 that calculates the annual utilities. Copy the formula in cell D4 to
the range D5:D10 to calculate annual amounts for the remaining categories.
4. Move the label in cell A15 to cell A16.
5. Create formulas in cells C11 and D11 that total the monthly and annual expenses.
6. Create a formula in cell D13 that calculates annual sales.
7. Create a formula in cell C16 that determines the monthly profit or loss, calculated as monthly
sales minus the monthly total expenses. Copy the formula in cell C16 into cell D16.
8. Copy the labels in cells C3:D3 to cells F3:G3.
9. Type Projected Increase in cell H1, then type .22 in cell H2.
10. Create a formula in cell F4 that calculates the increased monthly utilities assuming the value
in C4 were increased by the percentage in cell H2. You will be copying this formula to other
cells, so youll need to use an absolute reference. Then copy the formula in cell F4 to cells
F5:F10 to calculate the remaining projected increased monthly expenses.
11. Create a formula in cell G4 that calculates the increased annual utilities based on the
calculation in cell F4. Copy the formula in cell G4 to cells G5:G10 to calculate the remaining
increased annual expenses.
12. Create a formula in cell F11 that uses the SUM function to calculate the total of the projected
increased monthly expenses. If Excel created a formula in cell G11, then delete that formula.
Copy the formula in F11 to cell G11 to calculate the increased annual expenses.
13. Copy the contents of cells C13:D13 into cells F13:G13. Create formulas in cells F16 and G16
that calculate projected profit/loss based on the projected increase in monthly and annual
expenses as shown in cells F11:G11.
Your worksheet should look like the Final Figure below. Save your changes, close the workbook
and exit Excel. Follow the directions on the SAM Web site to submit your completed project.
