PROJECT OVERVIEW
You run a freelance accounting business, and one of your newest clients is Pen & Paper, a small
office supply store. Now that youve converted the stores accounting records to Excel, the
manager would like you to work on an analysis of the inventory. Although more items will be
added later, the worksheet has enough items for you to begin your modifications.

## STUDENT START FILE

from www.cengage.com/sam2010)

Instructions
1. Open the file IL_Excel2010_UC_IC1a_FirstLastName_1.xlsx and save the file as
IL_Excel2010_UC_IC1a_FirstLastName_2.xlsx before you move to the next step. Verify
that your name appears in cell B4 of the Documentation sheet. (Note: Do not edit the
of the start file from the SAM Web site.)
2. Switch to the Sheet1 worksheet. Create a formula in cell E4 that calculates the value of the
items on hand based on the price paid per item in cell B4. Copy the formula into the range
E5:E14. Format the range E4:E14 in the Comma Style.
3. In cell F4, use an absolute reference to the markup percentage in cell H1 to calculate the sale
price of all the permanent markers on hand. (Hint: Multiply the on hand value by the markup
percentage.) Copy the formula into the range F5:F14.
4. Apply bold to the column labels in cells A3:F3, and italicize the items in cells A4:A14.
5. Increase the width of column A to be at least 24.00 characters. Adjust the widths of columns
B, C, D, and G to be at least 9.00 characters. Adjust the widths of columns E and F to be at
least 14.00 characters.
6. Format the values in the Sale Price column as Accounting Number Format with two
decimal places.
7. Format the values in the Price Paid column as Comma Style with two decimal places.
8. Add a row directly under #2 Pencils for Digital cordless telephones, price paid 53.45, sold
individually (each), with 23 on hand. Copy the appropriate formulas to cells E7:F7.
9. Check the spelling of the entire worksheet and correct any spelling errors in the worksheet.
10. In the range D4:D15, use conditional formatting to apply Yellow Fill with Dark Yellow Text
to items with a quantity of less than 25 on hand.
11. In the range D4:D15, use an icon set of your choosing to illustrate the relative differences
between values in the range.
12. Add an outside border around the data in the Item column (do not include the Item column
label).
13. Delete the row containing the Thumb tacks entry.
Your worksheet should look like the Final Figure below. Save your changes, close the workbook
and exit Excel. Follow the directions on the SAM Web site to submit your completed project.
