Town to partner with Uber, BEMYDD

By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Evesham Saves Lives will live
on, for now.
At a press conference on Oct.
15, Evesham officials announced
an extension through Jan. 2 of
the towns Evesham Saves Lives
program, which seeks to combat
drunk driving by offering intoxicated residents free rides home
from establishments in town.
Mayor Randy Brown said the
extension comes after the end of
the 30-day pilot program that ran
throughout September, where a
combination of shuttles provided
by the town and drivers from the
Sober Sam designated driver
service safely transported 350
people to their homes.
We took 350 people off the
road, Brown said. In my opinion, as a public servant, its your
job to keep your residents as safe
as possible.
During the 30-day pilot, Evesham residents who believed they
were too drunk to drive could use
the Evesham Township mobile
app to request a ride to their
home for free.

While that free aspect isnt

changing moving forward, what
is changing about the program is
the addition of private taxi service Uber, along with the addition
of designated driver service BEMYDD, where a pair of drivers
brings users and their cars home
together.
Brown said the use of Uber and
BEMYDD were more flexible and
cost effective than the township
shuttles and the Sober Sam service and could get to establishments faster.
Ana Mahony, general manager
of Uber for New Jersey, said Uber
was excited to be a part of this
first of its kind partnership.
Mahony cited a joint study
Uber released with Mothers
Against Drunk Driving that
found demand for Uber spikes in
communities at the same time
that bars are closing, and drunk
driving-related accidents go down
in areas where Uber operates.
We have measurable data that
these kinds of partnerships and
Ubers activity in a community
truly does help solve the problem,
and for that were incredibly

It was a hard-fought game in boys varsity soccer when Cherokee took on Washington Township on
Oct. 15 at Cherokee. Both teams went without goals in the first half, with Washington Township ultimately scoring the one game-winning goal in the second half. Pictured is Cherokee senior No. 17
Luke Gibson tangled up with Washington for control of the ball.

fought so fervently for so
many years ago. Many would say that
voting is one of the most important inalienable rights that we have as Americans, if not the most important inalienable right.
Colonial Americans fought for independence in the 1700s based on the rallying cry of no taxation without representation, and they wanted the
right to choose their own representation.
Over the following 200 years, three
major pieces of legislation extended
or ensured voting rights:

Democrats applaud mayor,
council for transparency efforts
At the Oct. 6 Evesham Township Council
meeting, Mayor Randy Brown expressed
gratitude to Paul Chenier, the volunteer
videographer who has been videotaping as
many council meetings as he could for
more than six months now. Brown also said
at the council meeting and again on Twitter that council is considering video options for its meetings.
It is encouraging to see Brown change
his attitude toward videotaping Council
meetings after repeatedly dismissing the
idea for years. Earlier this year when the

Evesham Democrats asked Chenier to help

the residents of our town have better access to council meetings via video to increase accessibility for all residents and to
bring about greater transparency to our
local government, we really didn't think
that the mayor and council would have
such a change of heart so quickly.
We applaud the mayor and council for finally showing support for what the Evesham Democrats and many other residents
have sought from our council: transparency and accessibility to our local government for all residents.

BEMYDD vice president of
marketing Alexa Milkovich said
services such as BEMYDD help
stop situations where drivers
might only be a few miles from
home and contemplate taking the
risk of driving while intoxicated
because they need their car the
next day.
Evesham Police Chief Christopher Chew said in addition to saving lives, the program also helps
save the department time and
money by reducing the number of
DWIs it has to handle.
Were taking people out there,
arresting somebody, were taking
two officers off the street to come
in and process the individual.

God forbid theres a crash. If

theres a crash, it takes several officers, several weeks and months
in a year to finalize a report,
Chew said.
Chew said from January
through August, there were 35 individuals arrested for DWI in Evesham who said they were coming
from businesses in town.
Since instituting the Evesham
Saves Lives program, Chew said
of those arrested for DWI, none
said they were coming from local
establishments.
As with the original pilot program, Brown said no taxpayer
dollars would go toward funding
the program, as donations from
the Evesham Celebrations Foundation, as well as anonymous
donors in town, would handle any
costs.
Brown said some restaurants
and other establishments have
also already donated to the program, although they wont be re-

quired to do so until after these

next 60 days are over and the
town can use collected data to determine what would be a fair contribution.
The safe ride program will be

Town looks to build walking paths

By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
With Eveshams new M2 turf
soccer field project recently completed, and money remaining in
the projects bond ordinance, the
townships focus has now turned
to other possible improvements to
the field and Memorial Sports
Complex.
Specifically, Evesham Township Council has instructed township officials to explore creating a
new walking path to loop around
the complex and even connect
across New Road to the Diamonds
at Arrowhead Park softball complex and municipal complex.
Councilmember Ken DAndrea, who also serves as commissioner of the Marlton Soccer program, which originally agreed to
pay for 25 percent of the costs of
installing the turf field, explained
the path idea.
He said the path would travel
down the tree line from New
Road, up through to the M2 field,
looping back to a small workout
station area, ultimately working
down to the fence line on New
Road, connecting with another
path, working across New Road to
the Diamonds at Arrowhead Park
and then again work its way back.
Along the way, DAndrea said
there could be mile markers for
those using the path for walking
exercises.
The idea is half mile, three
quarter mile, one mile, so when
people are walking they have an
idea outside of having a pedometer with them, DAndrea said.
Director of community development Nancy Jamanow said she
has met with representatives of
the townships seniors group and
environmental commission to get
input on a potential path and said
both groups representatives were
excited about the idea.
They wanted to have a path
that had areas for seating along it,
just benches and such, and they
would like areas where there
could be naturalized landscaping,
native species and the other suggestions, too, horseshoes some-

where or bocce, Jamanow said.

In addition to the path, DAndrea said another important upgrade would be safety netting
along the side of the M2 field that
borders the complexs playground
and concession area.
The path, to me, and the netting, somehow between the two of
them, they are the top two, DAndrea said.
Other possible improvements
DAndrea noted were replacing
water fountains at the concession
stands, enhancing the LeRoy
Homer Memorial and flagpole,
getting Internet-based security
cameras for the fields to prevent
vandalism and doing more upkeep to the restroom areas.
With the increased usage over
at the park, as more and more
people come, especially when we
have a path and everything completed, theres going to be an
abundance of individuals there
and with that should require
some extra attention, DAndrea

said.
Mayor Randy Brown noted
there are some weekends where
both soccer and football games
are going on at the complex at the
same time, and it becomes a situation where hundreds if not thousands of people frequent the area.
Brown also raised the possibility of elongating trails in the
woods between the municipal
complex and Briarwood sub-development to potentially connect
with the new path created at the
Memorial Sports Complex.
Runners would now use that
loop, and Cherokee could use it as
their cross country trail, Brown
said.
Evesham Township manager
Tom Czerniecki said hes been in
other townships that have created
such a trail system and believed
the community would enjoy it.
People who use nothing else
love trails, especially if they can
actually get from one place to another, Czerniecki said.

Danielle Haubrich, or Miss
Danielle, as the locals know her,
is a childrens librarian who specializes in the children aspect.
Growing up in Edgewater Park
is where Haubrich discovered her
passion for dedicating her time to
children. She babysat and worked
at summer camps and daycares
all through her teenage years.
Pretty much all of my work
experience has been with children, Haubrich said.
After graduating from Holy
Cross Academy in Delran,
Haubrich went on to study speech
pathology and audiology at Towson University in Baltimore.
After obtaining her bachelors
of science degree, she went on to
study library science as a part of
Drexels graduate school program.
This was the perfect fit for her
while she was living in Wildwood
Crest and working at the Cape
May County Library, because
there were no other schools that
offered a masters of library and
information science degree within driving distance of the Shore,
so an online program was the
most convenient option.
Being a librarian entails more
schooling than most people would
imagine, as Haubrich had to earn
her master's degree before offi-

cially becoming one.

She is also a well-traveled individual. Before finding her home
in Marlton and working at the
Pinelands Branch Library in
Medford, Haubrich spent a year
in San Diego and has driven
across the country three times.
Her favorite place to stop is the
Outer Banks in North Carolina.
It took me awhile to figure out
what I really wanted to do. I always knew that I wanted to work
with children in some capacity,
Haubrich said.
At first, she thought she wanted to be a classroom teacher, and
then she thought she wanted to be
a speech pathologist, but when
the idea of being a childrens librarian finally came to her, she
knew it was the perfect fit.
Kids are just so much fun! As
the old saying goes choose a job
you love, and you will never have
to work a day in your life. I feel
like this is so true. I genuinely
love what I do and have fun every
day, Haubrich said.
She has now been a childrens
librarian for eight years.
When she is not at the library
working with kids, she is at home
raising her own 1-year-old daughter with her husband Mike.
Haubrich has embraced the
mom role with open arms as she
focuses on spending time with
her daughter and husband in her
spare time. She also enjoys cook-

ing and baking for them as she is

always looking for new recipes.
Her favorite at the moment is
roasted butternut squash with
Papa Joes Salt, a homegrown
recipe that originated locally in
Medford Lakes.
I find both cooking and yoga
to be very calming, relaxing and
meditative activities, Haubrich
said.
She picked up yoga during her
pregnancy when she started taking classes at The Sanctuary for
Yoga in Medford.
Though it is now hard to find
time to continue the classes with
her daughter here, Haubrich continues to practice yoga at home.
She has also been searching for
a little extra energy after a family
vacation to California has left her
and the family with a bit of jet
lag.
After being a green tea girl her
whole life, she has recently gotten
into drinking mocha-flavored
lattes from Harvest Coffee one of
the local stores that allows her to
enjoy the fall season and the town
of Medford just that much more.
I love the sense of community
here. The Halloween Parade, the
Dickens Festival, the 4th of July
Fireworks, there are so many
wonderful
community-wide
events, Haubrich said. Im also
excited to see how much Main
Street has been revitalized recently. It has come a long way in the
last six years since I started working at the Pinelands Library.
She plans to turn those six
years into many more as she and
librarian Rick Yankosky continue to grow the Pinelands Library
into a hotspot for kids in Medford.

Burlington County Library System or to check out the events
