Problem Statement: A refrigerator wall consists of low carbon steel (k = 43 W/mK) 1 mm thick on the outside, 2
mm thick polystyrene (k = 0.157 W/mK) inside, with 2 cm thick expanded cork (k = 0.036 W/mK) in
between as an insulation. Outside the refrigerator the air temperature is 25 oC, while inside, the air
temperature is 10oC. The properties of air on either side of the wall are as follows:
= 1.177 kg/m3, Cp = 1005 J/kgK, = 15.6810-6 m2/s, k = 0.02624 W/mK, = 0.00338 K-1, Pr = 0.708.
Q-1:

Determine the heat flow rate through the wall per unit area. Perform at least two iterations and summarize
your results in tabular form.
(20 points)

Problem Statement: Engine oil is used as a lubricant, and due to the unforeseen hot spot in the system, the oil
temperature reaches to 90oC. The oil has a flow rate of 500 kg/hr and it should be cooled to 70 oC. Ra water
is available at 30oC. (Note: Initially properties of water should be taken at 40 oC and for engine oil at 80oC.
Economic velocity for engine oil can be taken as 0.5 < V < 1.5 m/s.)
Q-2:

Identify and list all realistic constraints application to this problem.

(5 points)

Q-3:

Select an appropriate heat exchanger for this service and analyze it completely. Perform first iteration and
suggest the steps for the consecutive iterations.
(25 points)

Problem Statement: In a steam power plant, steam enters the turbine at a pressure of 10 MPa and leaves at 1.1
MPa. The inlet and outlet temperatures of steams are 400 oC and 184oC. The steam flow rate is 150 kg/s.
Q-4:

Find out the actual output work of the turbine using manufacturers plot.

(6 points)

Q-5:

Is manufacturers claim of adiabatic efficiency true if the steam leaving the turbine is saturated at the given
temperature? Show details of your conclusion.
