SFO-2
SIDE POCKET MANDREL
ASSY. # 211X-XXX
DESCRIPTION
The SFO-2 side pocket mandrel is made up as an integral part of the production tubing
when preparing a well for gas lift, chemical injection, waterflood or other special
applications. 1 1/2 inch O.D. wireline flow control devices will fit in this mandrel. This
mandrel is designed to be installed in deviated or straight hole wells. The SFO-2 side
pocket mandrel is designed with an oval cross section and an eccentric swage at both
ends. The upper swage contains an orienting sleeve, which facilitates the use of an
orienting kickover tool when running or pulling 1 1/2 inch O.D. flow control devices. The
oval cross section enables running in dual completions. It is available in a variety of
sizes, threads and materials.
The SFO-2 pocket consists of a latch lug and two polished bores. The bores straddle
the ports, which provide communication between the casing annulus and the tubing.
The wireline flow control devices have packing which seal in the polished bores above
and below the communicating ports in the mandrel pocket. The SFO-2 mandrel
features a pocket and tool guard forged in one piece. The tool guard allows only the
appropriate running and pulling tools to approach the pocket and deflects all others
back into the tubing bore of the mandrel.
The SFO-2 side pocket mandrel is available in 4130 material which can be heat treated
for standard service use or heat treated for corrosion resistance in wells with high
concentration of H2S. The SFO-2 side pocket mandrel is available in 9Cr-1Mo material
heat treated for corrosion resistance in wells with mild concentration of H2S/CO2 and 13
chrome material heat treated for maximum corrosion resistance in wells with high
concentrations of CO2.

FEATURES
The one-piece forged pocket/tool guard has a smooth and tapered surface that avoids wireline snags and
corrosion traps. There are no shielded areas which can prevent proper protective coating.
Tool guard assures that flow control devices are guided into the pocket while larger tools are deflected back
into the tubing bore of the mandrel.
The one-piece forged pocket/tool guard provides a latch lug at the top of the pocket for top latching devices.
The one-piece forged pocket tool guard has a recessed opposing port configuration that prevents flow erosion
should the mandrel pocket be positioned against the casing wall. The recessed port configuration will prevent
blockage of flow into the mandrel pocket should the pocket be positioned against the casing wall.
The one-piece forged pocket/tool guard allows for a higher pressure rating.
Mandrel is heat treated to give the best combination of strength and corrosion resistance for its intended use.
API and premium standard threads are available in box by box or box by pin configurations.
Each SFO-2 side pocket mandrel is inspected and tested under the guidelines of the McMurry-Macco
Quality Assurance Program which includes wet magnetic particle inspection, hardness value test, hydrostatic
pressure test and I.D./O.D. drift. All mandrels are manufactured from fully traceable materials.
The orienting sleeve which is internally welded, not plug welded, into the upper swage allows for positioning
kickover tools into precise alignment with the pocket. This feature allows the mandrel to be installed in highly
deviated wells (up to 70) regardless of side pocket mandrel orientation.

RUNNING PROCEDURE
1. Install the running tool with proper flow control
device onto the kickover tool. Make up the
kickover tool onto the bottom of the wireline
tool string and install the assembly in the
lubricator.
2. Lower the unit into the tubing until the kickover
tool is below the selected mandrel, the depth of
which is known from well records.
3. Raise the tools slowly through the tubing until
they stop, which indicates that the locating
finger in the kickover tool has contacted the top
of the orienting sleeve of the mandrel.
4. Pull tension on the wireline until the weight
indicator of the wireline unit indicates enough
weight to actuate the kickover tool to its kicked
over position above the pocket in the mandrel.
5. Slowly lower the tools until a weight loss is
registered on the weight indicator. This means
the kickover tool has kicked over and located
the pocket of the mandrel. No weight loss
indicates that the kickover tool did not release
to the kicked over position and Steps 3, 4, and
5 must be repeated.
6. Jar downward to drive the flow control device
into the pocket of the mandrel and latch it into
position.
7. Upward jarring will release the running tool
from the latch thus leaving the flow control
device in the mandrel pocket. Separation of
the running tool from the latch gives a positive
indication that the latch and flow device are
firmly locked into the mandrel pocket.
Caution: Some running tools are released
by downward jarring only (i.e. Bottom latch
devices).
8. The tool string can now be removed from the
well. As the Kickover tool is pulled upward
through the mandrel, the locating finger in the
kickover tool will stop in the orienting sleeve of
the mandrel. Upward jarring or pulling will
release the locating finger to permit the
kickover tool to pass through the mandrel.

PULLING PROCEDURE
1. Install the pulling tool and spacer onto
the Kickover tool. Make up the kickover
tool onto the bottom of the wireline tool
string and install the assembly into the
lubricator.
2. Lower the unit into the tubing until the
kickover tool is below the selected
mandrel, the depth of which is known
from well records.
3. Raise the tools slowly through the tubing
until they stop, which indicates that the
locating finger of the kickover tool has
contacted the top of the orienting sleeve
of the mandrel.
4. Pull tension on the wireline until the
weight indicator of the wireline unit
indicates enough weight to actuate the
kickover tool to its kicked over position
above the pocket in the mandrel.
5. Slowly lower the tools until a weight loss
is registered on the weight indicator.
This means the kickover tool has kicked
over and located the pocket of the
mandrel. No weight loss indicates that
the kickover tool did not release to the
kicked over position and Steps 3, 4, and
5 must be repeated.
6. Jar downward to secure the pulling tool
to the running head of the latch.
7. Jar upward. This pulls the flow control
device from the pocket of the mandrel. If
it is not possible to pull the valve,
downward jarring will release the pulling
tool from the running head of the latch.
The tool string can now be removed from
the well. As the kickover tool is pulled
upward through the mandrel, the locating
finger in the kickover tool will stop in the
orienting sleeve of the mandrel. Upward
jarring or pulling will release the locating
finger to permit the kickover tool to pass
through the mandrel
