GAME REVIEWS
Game 1
Arizona - 23
San Francisco - 13
at San Francisco, September 7, 2008
The San Francisco 49ers dropped its home-opener 23-13 against NFC West rival Arizona. The 49ers turned the ball over five times with four fumbles
and one interception. Despite three turnovers in the first half alone, San Francisco managed to head into halftime tied at 10-10. Arizona controlled the
ball for over 20 minutes in the second half and added 13 points to essentially seal the victory. The Cardinals took control of the game in the third quarter,
chewing 11 minutes off the clock and scoring 10 points before the 49ers even had a chance to run a single offensive play. Arizona took the second half
kick and engineered a 15-play, 65-yard drive that elapsed 6:35 off the clock before a 31-yard PK Neil Rackers field goal put the Cardinals in front, 13-
10. Rackers pooched the ensuing kick into the second row of the 49ers return unit where LB Takeo Spikes mishandled the ball, resulting in an Arizona
fumble recovery and a first down at the San Francisco 33-yard line. Arizona converted that drive into a touchdown when rookie RB Tim Hightower
scored on a two-yard run on a fourth-and-one situation for a 20-10 Cardinals lead. San Francisco QB J.T. O’Sullivan positioned the 49ers for a 30-yard
field goal early in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 20-13. The 49ers comeback chances ended when Arizona went on an 18-play, 62-yard drive field
goal drive that took over 10 minutes for a 23-13 advantage. San Francisco fumbled on the first play of the following drive to secure the win for Arizona.
O’Sullivan made his first NFL start and finished the game 14-of-20 for 195 yards with one interception and two fumbles. After spotting Arizona a 3-0
lead, RB Frank Gore took a handoff and bounced to the outside for a 41-yard touchdown run to give the 49ers a 7-3 lead. Gore finished the game with
96 yards rushing on 14 carries for a 6.9-yard average. A one-yard touchdown pass from QB Kurt Warner to WR Larry Fitzgerald gave the Cardinals a
10-7 second quarter lead before Nedney connected on a 39-yarder with just under two minutes to play in the first half to tie the game at 10-10.

San Francisco - 31
Detroit - 13
at San Francisco, September 21, 2008
The San Francisco 49ers scored over 30 points for the second consecutive week to improve to 2-1 with a 31-13 victory over the visiting Detroit Lions.
RB Frank Gore gained 130 yards on the ground, and QB J.T. O’Sullivan threw for two touchdown passes to lead the 49ers to the win. The 49ers offense
chalked up 370 yards of total offense, including 182 yards on the ground. The 49ers defensive secondary shut down the Lions big receivers in front of
the home crowd at Candlestick. Detroit gained just 124 yards in the air, and receivers Roy Williams (two catches for 18 yards) and Calvin Johnson (four
catches for 40 yards) were non-factors. The 49ers scored on three straight possessions to take a 21-3 halftime lead. A 33-yard run by Gore positioned
the 49ers for O’Sullivan’s six-yard touchdown pass to WR Isaac Bruce for a 7-0 first quarter lead. An 18-yard run by WR Arnaz Battle on a reverse on
the next possession helped get the 49ers in Detroit territory where they took a 14-0 lead on a four-yard touchdown run by Gore. After spotting the Lions
a field goal, O’Sullivan connected on a 25-yard pass to WR Bryant Johnson followed by an 18-yard pass to WR Josh Morgan and then a 24-yard touch-
down pass to TE Delanie Walker for a 21-3 advantage. The only scoring in the third quarter was a field goal by Detroit to close the lead to 21-6 before
the 49ers had a ten-point fourth quarter to seal the victory. The 49ers moved to the Detroit one-yard line early in the fourth quarter and were faced with
a fourth-and-one situation. Head coach Mike Nolan elected to go for the touchdown rather than attempt a field goal. Eleven-year veteran CB/PR Allen
Rossum took a handoff and scored a touchdown on a one-yard run for 28-6 49ers lead. It was Rossum’s first NFL offensive play of his career. Detroit
responded on the next series when QB Jon Kitna scrambled on a fourth-down play to help set up a 34-yard touchdown pass to RB Rudi Johnson. The
Lions attempted an onsides kick on the ensuing drive that Battle picked up and returned 28 yards to the Detroit 12-yard line to set up a 25-yard PK Joe
Nedney field goal for a 31-13 lead. DE Justin Smith intercepted a Lions pass with 1:50 left to play to seal the victory for San Francisco.

Game 5
New England - 30
San Francisco - 21
at San Francisco October 5, 2008
Three turnovers and an explosive 66-yard touchdown reception by New England WR Randy Moss helped the visiting Patriots beat San Francisco 30-21
to drop the 49ers to a 2-3 season record. New England had not traveled to Candlestick Park since 1995 and had never won in San Francisco in four at-
tempts. After a strong start that saw the 49ers take a 14-7 lead on two QB J.T. O’Sullivan touchdown passes, the Patriots turned to a ball control offense
that basically kept the 49ers offense off the field for the better part of the second and third quarters. New England dominated the time of possession,
holding the ball for 39:52 compared to the 49ers 20:08. The 49ers also had trouble getting first downs, going through a stretch of 36 minutes without
a first down during the second and third quarter. O’Sullivan threw three touchdown passes, but completed just 14 of 29 passes for 130 yards and was
intercepted three times. After striking first on a 16-yard touchdown pass from O’Sullivan to RB Frank Gore, the Patriots responded on their next drive
going deep with a 66-yard touchdown pass from QB Matt Cassel to Moss to tie the game at 7-7. A 38-yard pass from O’Sullivan to WR Isaac Bruce on
the ensuing series set up a six-yard pass from O’Sullivan to Bruce for a 14-7 advantage. New England controlled the clock for over ten minutes of the
second quarter and scored 10 points to take a 17-14 halftime lead. The Patriots went on a 13-play drive that took over six minutes and ended in a field
goal to close to 14-10 and then with just over three minutes to play in the first half took a lead they would not relinquish when RB Kevin Faulk capped a
12-play, 80-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown after taking a direct snap on a fourth-down play with nine seconds to play in the first half. S Rodney
Harrison picked off an O’Sullivan pass deep inside San Francisco territory in the third quarter to set up a Patriots touchdown, as New England expanded
it lead to 24-14. The 49ers had the ball for only 2:49 of the third quarter. After taking a 27-14 lead on a field goal early in the fourth quarter, the 49ers
offense finally was able to move the ball. The 49ers gained four first downs on a drive that went to the New England five-yard line where O’Sullivan
connected with Bruce for a score that made it 27-21 with over ten minutes still remaining in the game. New England sealed the victory on the ensuing
drive when they went on a five minute drive that ended in a 49-yard field goal to make it 30-21 with just over four minutes to play. O’Sullivan was in-
tercepted on one series and then when the 49ers got the ball back they were stopped on downs and the Patriots ran off the final 1:21 to get the victory.
