PREPARATION

OF POTASSIUM ACETATE

Therapeu5c Uses of Potassium

Acetate

Diure5c
Antacid
Laxa5ve
Urinary alkalizer

Prepara5on of KAc
Heat sand bath
Weigh 6g KHCO
Evapora5ng dish 10mL 6N CH3COOH + 10mL
H2O
Add KHCO3 to the solu5on pinch by pinch,
adding aTer eervescence ceases
Test with litmus must be acidic, if not add 5
gXs. CH3COOH and test again

Evaporate on sand bath with con5nuous

s5rring un5l dry
Pulverize boXle immediately

Sand bath used for temp more than 100 deg

not over 140oC
Deliquescent absorb moisture from the
atmosphere and will liquefy
Pyrolysis hea5ng strongly an acidic
substance which decomposes into vola5le and
inammable vapors and leaves a residue
containing par5cles of carbon
(Principle: oxida5on)

EQUATION

CH3COOH + KHCO3 CH3COOK + CO2 + H2O

Test for Proper5es

16-1 Physical proper5es:

White crystalline powder, faint acetous odor , slightly
alkaline taste

16-2 Test for Iden5ty

1. Pinch Kac + 10mL water
a) 2CH3COOK+ Na3Co(NO2)6
K2NaCo(NO2)6 +2CH3COONa
yellow crystalline ppt

b) 3CH3COOK + FeCl3 (CH3COO)3Fe + 3KCl
(yellow soln) (brownish red soln)

(CH3COO)3Fe + 3HCl 3CH3COOH + FeCl3

(yellow soln)

2. Pinch CH3COOK + 5mL 6N H2SO4

2CH3COOK + H2SO4 2CH3COOH +K2SO4

(vinegar odor)
3. Soln no. 2 +95%ETOH + water bath
2CH3COOH +C2H5OH 2CH3COOC2H5 +H2O
(fruity odor)

4. Pyrolysis
Complete Oxida5on:
CH3COOK+ O2 K2CO3 + CO2 +H2O
K2CO3 + H2SO4 K2SO4 +H2O

Incomplete oxida5on:
CH3COOK+ O2 K2CO3 + C +H2O
K2CO3 + H2SO4 K2SO4 + CO2 +H2O

Pyrolysis
Result:
White residue and no libera5on of carbon dioxide
Enough supply of oxygen (heat strongly or heat over
long period of 5me)

White and black residue, with libera5on of carbon

dioxide gas
Incomplete oxida5on
No sucient amount of oxygen
Hea5ng for short period of 5me

6. Theore5cal Yield
1. weight CH3COOH
g = M x mL X MW
1000
= 6M x 10mL X 60
1000
=3.6 gCH3COOH (convert to g CH3COOK)

6. Theore5cal Yield
2. weight KHCO3
6g KHCO3 (convert to g CH3COOK)

POST LAB DISCUSSION

Post lab #1:
How many grams of ace5c acid are contained
in 10 mL of 6M CH3COOH

g= mL X M x MWace5c acid
1000
= 10 x 6 x 60
1000
=3.6 g ace5c acid

POST LAB DISCUSSION

Post lab #2:
How many grams of KHCO3 are needed to react
with the CH3COOH used in the experiment?

3.6g CH3COOH X 1mole CH3COOH x 1 mole KHCO3 x 100.11g KHCO3
1 g CH3COOH 1 mole CH3COOH 1 mole KHCO3

= 6 g KHCO3
