With its variable screw system the

PFEIFER PSF column shoe simplifies
planning and shortens delivery times

Columns can be rigidly connected to

the foundations very well with the
support shoe system.

s
g

s
g
w

Even rigid beam column connections are possible with this system.
This enables the designer to optimise
the moment capacity for the beams
and columns, meaning that this type
of construction can be just as costeffective as steel construction. The
beams and columns represents a
real breakthrough for the reinforced
concrete construction.

Foundations are accurately laser-positioned on the foundation course and

roughly adjusted for height. Then
once the gaps have been filled and
compacted, the columns are simply
set up on the prepared foundation
anchors and connecting bolts and
adjusted to be accurately perpendicular.

As it is possible to separate the

precast columns from the precast
foundation plates, transport can be
used very effectively and intensively,
which in turn enables the costs of
transportation to be considerably
reduced.

Advantages for the constructor

Earlier use of the building complex, giving an earlier
return on the investment
Cost-effective solution based on the use of standard
components.
Maximum speed of erection, as the planning and construction
of the building can take place in the shortest time possible.
Assembly can also be performed under adverse weather
conditions, as the load bearing connection only needs the
components to be bolted together.

Advantages for the planner

Flexibility right up to the last minute, as the correct length of connecting
bolt can simply be screwed in right at the end with no need for welding
Type approval of the components means total planning safety.
The same design values for tension and compression during
assembly as well, and with the PDK foundation anchor this also
applies for very thin foundations "off-the-shelf" and floor slabs.
"Made in Germany" all materials comply with German
standards and regulations.

Advantages for the precast company

Fast delivery of parts for installation, as they only need to be
finished off with off-the-shelf components.
No delays even if the bar lengths are decided at the last
minute.
Parts are delivered in packaging which is ideal in terms of
logistics no bulky objects for installation taking up large
amounts of warehouse space
Finished parts can be assembled and installed regardless of
the weather, even under snowy or frosty conditions.

Advantages for the purchasing department

Fast delivery times since we only need to supply standard
parts that are always kept in stock.
Cost-effective parts for installation since individually welded
column shoes are not required.
As the components in the system simply need to be selected
and put together, there is no longer any need for long lead
times.

The new PFEIFER column shoe PSF:

Flexible planning and ordering,
and lightning-fast delivery of system
components which are always
kept in stock.

Advantages
Increased installation
tolerances
As the continuity bars are
assembled with standard
components, their lengths
can be chosen just before delivery, offering incredible flexibility.
The same tensile forces and
compressive forces during
assembly and in the final state.
Fast delivery times are possible
since only standard parts are
used, that are always kept in
stock.
All components are typeapproved, so there is no
need for time-consuming and expensive
design calculations.

The PFEIFER column shoe system is

PFEIFER PGS Foundation anchors

Article no. 05.337

Connection Systems
Foundation anchors
The static type approved PFEIFER
PGS Foundation Anchors are used
to anchor tensile and compressive
forces in the foundations. Their main
application is in the anchoring of
columns, where they are used in
conjunction with PFEIFER column
shoes.

The PGS foundation anchors using

the familiar PFEIFER socket technology are much more advantageous for
the building process than protruding
threaded bolts.
Installation is easily performed with a
flexurally rigid template. As the highstrength threaded bolts are only screwed in when the column is erected,
they are still fully as-new then.

PFEIFER PVB/PGV Connecting Bolts

Article no. 05.339

Connection Systems
Connecting bolts
PFEIFER connecting bolts consist of a
threaded bolt with two nuts and two
washers and are used for load bearing
connections between PFEIFER column
shoes and the corresponding foundation anchors.

As the column rests on a single point

on a previously height-adjusted pack
of steel shim plates, vertical alignment is performed by adjusting the
height of the nuts on the connecting
bolt under the column shoe. In the
case of larger columns, this is done
with extended spanners or with hammer tools.

components) are screwed in prior to assembly of the column shoes and

fully screwed into the base plate with locking pliers, as this ensures that the
forces are safely and reliably transferred through the screw connection. In the
assembled state (assembly joints not yet mortar-filled) the column shoes are
tightened onto the foundation anchors by means of nuts/locknuts and washers
to form a load bearing connection. In this state, the column shoes can be
subjected to their full load-bearing capacity for tensile or compressive loads.
For the final state, the assembly joints underneath the column and the installation recesses are poured in with low-shrinkage casting mortar. The casting
mortar used must at least comply with the strength grade of the column
concrete. Once this cast mortar has hardened, the concrete cross-section can
be rated according to the standard rules for reinforced concrete construction.

Installation of the foundation anchors

Competent and careful installation of the PFEIFER foundation anchors is vital
for the functioning of the system. Take care to ensure accurately positioned
and vertical installation. The following describes the main points for installing
the anchors.
Before the PFEIFER anchors are installed they must be checked for completeness. Replacing components is not permissible.
A template made for the project is used in the installation of the anchors into
the foundation formwork (see "Making the installation template")
(Figure 1).

Fig. 1

Installation of the column shoes

The column shoes are installed with accurate positioning with the aid of a
suitable template (see Making the installation template) with the same
spacing as the anchors (Figure 4). To prevent undesired movement during
the concreting, suitable fixing means must be used. For this, we recommend
using PFEIFER recessing blocks (dimensions in Table 3) with the corresponding retaining bushes. Here too, long anchor bars require additional securing
to existing formwork or reinforcement to prevent movement.
Fig. 4
Recessing block

If the installation recesses are not filled with casting mortar, the proportion
of the surface of the recesses needs to be subtracted from the column cross
section for calculating the bearing capacity of the cross section in compression. In addition, the column shoes must be protected against corrosion by
appropriate means such as protective coatings. The load-bearing capacity of
the column shoes is verified and static type approved for primarily static loads
from positive or negative normal forces. Even in the assembly state, the same
design values can be applied to each PSF column shoe for tensile and compressive loads.

In determining the pattern for anchors

and column shoes, the required
concrete cover according to the existing exposure class must be taken
into account (Figure 5). XC1 is applied
as the standard exposure class.
The resulting minimum dimensions
for the columns can be seen in Table

should be adapted if other exposure
classes are used.

It must always be ensured that the

templates for fixing the column shoes
(precast components) match those
for the foundation anchors (usually
on the building site). We therefore
recommend making the matching pair
of templates together (Figure 7).
Depending on the size of the column
shoes or foundation anchors, sufficiently stiff wooden boards or steel
plates should be used here.

Installation of the connecting bolts

The connecting bolts are used in conjunction with the socket-type foundation
anchors or female bars. Before the bolts are screwed in, remove the protective
caps and check the internal thread, cleaning it if necessary (Figure 8). Using
an Allen key the bolts can be simply screwed in. The screw depth provided is
2 x thread diameter. The resulting bolt protrusion values can be seen in Table
5 (Figure 9).

Formwork accessories
Polystyrene recessing blocks according to Table 3 and Figure 6 are recommended for the PFEIFER Column Shoes. They ensure that the minimum
concrete cover of c = 20 mm is provided for the column shoe base plate.
For a greater concrete cover, further polystyrene strips are added to
supplement the polystyrene blocks.

Erection of the precast columns

Before erecting the precast column a check must be made that the anchor
and column shoes are correctly arranged. See Table 6 for the installation
tolerances.
Before the column is put in place the lower nut and washer must be accurately set to the correct height. Before doing this, the upper nut and washer must
be removed. Then the column can be put in place and aligned. Before the
column is released from the crane, the upper nuts and washers must be
screwed on and tightened.

CAUTION: Bolts that have become bent must never be

used or straightened because they loose strength significantly as a result of the cold-forming process during
straightening.

After the column shoe and foundation anchor have been screwed down, the
connection can be subjected to its full load. The gaps that are present should
then be filled as soon as possible with a casting mortar of at least the same
quality as the concrete in the precast column. We recommend installing a
reinforcement mesh in the gap between the column and the foundation.

Anchoring the column shoes in the precast part

During the assembly of the PFEIFER PSF column shoes, continuation bars
are screwed into the internal threads of the base plate. These act to absorb
the design loads from the columns and to dissipate them into the solid column
shoe base plate. The reinforcing bars are divided into the two main anchoring
bars located near the main hole and a single anchoring bar located in the rear
part.

Alternatively, the installation is also possible using a pack of steel shim plates
adjusted to the correct height (see Figure 10). A maximum gap height of 50 mm
for type PSF must be maintained. The column is then simply placed on this
pack of steel shim plates. The upper nuts are then screwed down to fix the
alignment of the column and the lower nuts, previously screwed all the way
down, are tightened back up against the column. Any corrections needed for
correct vertical alignment of the column can be performed by loosening and
tightening the lower and upper nuts with the aid of a suitable impact wrench.
This is the usual method of column installation.

Fig. 10

In the column shoe layout according to the plan within the column crosssection, the main anchoring bars absorb the loads from the column reinforcement which is concentrated in the corners. For this reason, overlapping
lengths ls should be provided for these reinforcing bars. The minimum continuation bar lengths are given in Table 7 as a function of the concrete quality
used and the bond conditions.
The required lengths of the continuation bars to be screwed in at the rear
part of the column shoes are constant for a given column shoe size and are
also in Table 7. As a rule, the required continuation bar lengths are dependent
on the concrete quality and bond area and should be taken from Table 7 or
calculated.

Dimensioning of PFEIFER foundation anchors:

For PFEIFER foundation anchors there are basically two different theories for
anchoring the loads. Anchor versions PGS, PGS type G and the female bars
are classically designed with just development or overlap lengths. These
lengths can be determined individually by the responsible planners as
functions of the given boundary conditions.

Shim plates

max.50*mm
(Type PSF)

During the type approval testing, anchorage with straight bar ends and angled
hooks to DIN EN 1992-1-1, and overlapped joints to DIN EN 1992-1-1, are
verified and tested.
The transmission or anchoring of the forces in the adjacent component must
be determined by the responsible planner in accordance with the applicable
rules and the state of the technology. Lateral tensile stresses in the anchoring
and overlap zone must be absorbed by an installed reinforcement calculated
according to DIN EN 1992-1-1.

* If necessary, the maximum gap heights for PFEIFER PGM column shoes can
be requested from the PFEIFER technical support.

The anchor variant PDK can also be used for steel connections.
When the authorised bore diameters are maintained shear
forces can also be taken by the anchors.
When combined with PFEIFER column shoes this is only
possible through the friction between the washers and the
column shoes because of the existing tolerance bores in the
column shoes.

The PEK and PDK anchor variants must be rated in accordance with the
applicable building-authority approval. The required additional reinforcement
in the foundation is also based on the approval specifications.
For anchor variants that anchor the loads in the foundation with an overlap
joint, additional reinforcement is required as in Figure 15.

Shear load transmission

PFEIFER column shoes are designed for transmitting tensile and compressive
forces.
Additional structural measures need to be implemented if shear forces are to
be transmitted.
Figure 16 shows the most frequent type of layout. A height-levelled pack of
steel shim plates is placed centrally between the connecting bolts so that the
column can be placed on them. Tightening of the upper and lower nuts results
in a load-bearing connection. Shear force can be transmitted here by friction.
In each case the design resistance values should be determined according to
DIN EN 1992-1-1.

Pack of steel
plates

Fig. 16

Figure 17 small shear forces can be transmitted, for example, with a

PFEIFER waved anchor DB 682. This is placed in the column and a corresponding tube is concreted in as an opposing piece in the foundation. With a
pin, that engages with the tube, screwed into the waved anchor, the transmission of shear forces can be verified after filling with a high-strength casting
mortar. The freely available software for the DB 682 waved anchor can be
used for this.

Figure 19 also shows a variant for the case with greater shear forces. In this
case the arising forces are dissipated in the final state through positive fit via a
concrete collar concreted on afterwards. The dimensioning and reinforcement
implementation for this collar must be determined by the responsible planning
engineer for the specific project.

Figure 18 shows a possible arrangement for transmitting large shear forces

in a simple way. A type of dowel is formed on the bottom end of the column,
that engages in a larger ground recess. After the mortar fill, the positive fit
makes it possible to transmit a large shear forces.
Alternatively it is also possible to transfer arising shear forces with steel sections concreted into the construction, or via a defined formation of the joint in
accordance with DIN EN 1992-1-1. These should be decided on an individual
basis by the planning engineer.

Casting mortar

Sealing the recesses

The open areas under the column must be sealed with a high-strength
free-flowing non-shrinking mortar. For this we recommend using a PAGEL
VS casting mortar, that has the required properties. Filling can be achieved
by pouring the mortar through a previously inserted tube or by means of
shuttering fixed to the sides.

Shear load transmission:

Transmission of shear forces by friction alone can also be
verified. In each individual case the design resistance values
must then be determined according to DIN EN 1992-1-1.
Design example:
As an aid in calculating the column shoe connections a tested
calculation example is available on request in addition to the
free software.
