I dont know if you are familiar with the concept of Ontology and OWL language or if

you have ever heard about multi-agent systems? Java has some enablers for these
concepts like Protg which is an ontology editor or JADE which is Java Agent
Development Environment. Basically I have defined a project for my university final
course work. The whole project is defined by myself based on my readings and it is
not defined by my supervisor, so I am flexible about it and I can change its bits and
pieces. My background is mechanical engineering and I am based in mechanical
engineering school but the nature of my project is more computer science and
programming.
Well I have defined a comprehensive project with specific aims and objectives and I
think the framework is big and it takes time to address all sections of the project.
However, as I said I am felixible about it and if you can manage to do sections that
you think its possible, it would be great.
I can attach the project discription in a separate file for you but basically what I need
is a knowledge base on the web which can be achieved through ontology. In a
simple word, I want to have a semantic knowledge base which different people from
diffrenet areas of the world can have access to through internet and they can add or
remove raw data to this database. Then through the use of
ontology(OWL/RDF/XML) I want to link these data and find relationship between
then. Finally, I want to query this knowledge base and retreive the information and
knowledge that I want.
Because I am based in mechanical and manufacturing department, the application of
such a knowledge base would be manufacturing domain.
A very simple example of this could be data from a customer and a manufacturer.
For instance, a manufacturer would offer some manufacturing operations like
turning, milling, drilling and casting. I want these data to be transferred to the
knowledge base via internet. On the other hand a customer needs to order to a
manufacturer for heat treatment operation. So he can access to the internet and
request the operation heat treatment. Then through the linked data, he would be able
to understand that manufacturer X is not offering heat traetment operation.
This is just one example that just came to my mind. The example is not important at
the minute. What is important is the framework and the structure of the data through
web. Basically it is the idea of Semantic web for manufacturing application.
Hope I explained it clearly. The project description which I have provided in a
separate file is more accurate and is in more details and it talked about the use of
agents for automatic data query. But that one is more comprehensive and I dont
want you to necessariliy address all sections of it. For example there are some
sections related to the SCADA in the manufacturing domain which you may not know
anything about it. You can igonore those sections.I just want to know to what extent
of that project you are able to do.
