performing,morefuelefficientcars,butitwoulddefeattheirmarketingscheduletogiveus
theseadvantagesallatonce.
ThespeakerwasDrWilliamD.Guentzler,IndustrialArtsandPowerTechnologyprofessorat
SanDiegoStateUniversity(SDSU)
DrGuentzlerhasbeenteachingaspecialclassforgraduateautomotiveengineersatSDSU
forthepast3yearsaclassthatstimulatesthestudentstocreatehardwareprojects
designedtocosteffectivelyproducebettermileageandcleanerair.
Thetechnologyhasbeenaroundforseveralyearswhichcouldprovideacarownerwith100

%bettermileage,GuentzlerstressedinaninterviewwiththeSpotlight.
DollarSavings
Withgasolinepricesatapresentlowof$1.16tomorethan$1.50forsuperunleadedwith
service,adoublingofmileagecouldmeanconsiderabledollarsavings.
Theverybestretrofitmethodologies(devicesoradjustmentsonecanmakeontheoriginal
equipment)wouldbeacylinderdeactivationsystem(Cadillacsheralded864,for
example)andanautomaticoverdrive,GuentzlertoldtheSpotlight
Thissystemwilltypicallyreturnfrom30to60%improvementinmileageonaV8,andisone
ofthebestmileageimprovementsystemsavailable.
Guentzlerrecentlydesignedan84systemfortheBrownCarburetorCoofDraper,UT
(Spotlight,may2),themanufacturersoftheFishcarburetor.
NoVacuumDrag
Thereareanumberofpatentsalreadygrantedforunitsthatsimplycutoffthegasolinegoing
intofourofthecylinders.Thisistheleastefficientmethodofall,however.ThesystemIve
designedforBrown,whichutilizestwoFishcarburetorsveryeffectively,istheonlysystem
thatalsoeliminatesthevacuumdragfromthedeactivatedpistons.
Actualmileageimprovementfigureswerebeingobtainedatthetimeoftheinterview,but
GuetnzlerestimatestheBrown/Fish/Guentzlerunitwillderiveabout35%improvementon
theroad,andwillsellforunder$500.
TheReflancomputerizedsystem,whichliterallydeactivatesthevalveswithintheengine,
testedonatreadmilldynamometer,returnedalowfigureof66%mileageimprovement.
OfcoursetheReflansystemisexpensive,Guentzlerpointedout,costingmorethan$900
installed.
Someonewithastationwagon,pickuporotherlargeV8poweredvehiclecanhavethe
highwayfuelefficiencyofasmallcar.TheReflansystemstartspayingforitselfafter18000
miles.Recentstatisticsindicatethattheaverageautoownertodaykeepshisvehicle6to10
years
Itsamarketingconspiracy,Guentzlersmiled.Theywanttosellyouapieceatatime,
ratherthanallatoncefortworeasons.Itislesscostlytotoolupforchangesslowly,and
theywillhavenewfeaturesfornewmodelsassalesincentives.
Inaddition,Guentzlersaid,manufacturersdonotnecessarilyusethebestcomponentsfor
thebestmileageandsoforththeyusepartsandequipmentthatdothejobattheleast
cost.

Whataboutthefantasticcarburetorclaimsthefabled200mpgcarburetor,forexample?
Ithasneverbeenprovedthatsuchathingexisted,andtherestoftheautoengineisso
inefficientIdoubtitsevenpossibleforacarburetoralonetoprovidemuchmorethan,say,20
%.
Tobecosteffectivemeanstogetbackmoreinsavingsthanwhatthegassavingdevice
actuallycosts.Manypeoplewouldlosemoneyiftheyspent$500onaretrofitsystemtosave
25%/
Streetmileageinvolvessomanyvariablesandfactorsthatmileageratingsmaybeliterally
meaningless,Guentzlerexplained.However,anoverallpercentageimprovementcan
definitelybeobtainedwithseveralmethods.Oftenthesemethodsareadditive,meaningthat
the10%improvementofonemethodmaybeaddedtothe10%improvementoftheother.

AmericanConsumersVictimsofOilcarburetorConspiracy

In1934,JohnRobertFishproudlyannouncedhehadbuiltasimple,inexpensive,fuelsaving,
cleanerexhaustingcarburetor.Buthisthoroughlytestedandproveninventionwasnot
happilyreceivedbyeagerautomakers,asyoumightexpect.Instead,theinventormetwith
suppressionandharassment.
WhatwaswrongwiththeFishcarburetor?WhydidDetroitreactsoviolentlytothiseasierto
manufacturecarburetorthatwouldhavesavedmillionsinproductioncostsevenbackthen?
Whydidtheyturnthumbsdownonalowercost,betterperformingcarburetorthat
outperformswhatwelivewithtoday?
TheSpotlighthaslearnedthatitwasntsomethingwrongwiththeFishcarburetorthatldto
nearoblivion;itapparentlywasthesecretthattheFishdeviceuncoveredthatposedthe

threat.
TodaytheFishcarburetorhasbeenresurrected.And,althoughthemonopolypowersand
theirgovernmentflunkeysaretryingtocontinuethecoverup,thedeviceisreadilyavailable
today[1983]
MichaelHBrown(Spotlight,1Nov1982)istheowneroftheBrownCarburetorCompanyof
DraperUT.HeisthemanwhosinglehandedlyrevivedtheFishcarburetor.
Brownmanufacturesandmarketsthecarburetorsashighmileage,highperformance
equipment.
Animmensemythologyhasbuiltupconcerningcarburetorsandfuelefficiency,Browntold
TheSpotlightinarecentinterview,buttheFishistheonlycarburetorthatgivesyou4way
satisfaction.Itwillgiveyoumoremilestothegallon,andyetitcanbesettoregisterzero
emissions.
Ifyoucaretosacrificealittlefueleconomy,itwilldeliverupto30%morehorsepower.And,
thatsnotall.TheFishistheonlymultifuelcarburetorinexistence.Youcanrungasoline,
kerosene,alcohol,andevencrudeoil,orDieselfuelwithaFishonyourgasolineengine.
BrownisnotblowingsomewhenhetalksoffuelsandthecarburetormythologyofAmerica.
Browngoesoutofhiswaytoexplaincarburetiontoneophytes.
Essentially,thecarburetoristhedevicemixesfuelandairsothatthemixturewillexplode
insidethecylinderchambersoftheenginetoprovidemotivepower.Themixingoffuelandair
inamovingvehicle,withvariablesinthedemandsforchangingenginespeed,posesallkinds
ofproblemsformakersofcarburetors.Mostoftodayscarburetorshaveatleast25moving
partsand5timesasmanypartcomponents.
TheFishcarburetorhasonly3movingparts,andatotalof17components.Youcanimagine
howinexpensivetheywouldbeiftheyweremanufacturedinthenumbersofthebigauto
companied.Mycarburetorsretailfor$189andthatsonlybecauseImakeonlyafewata
time.A4barrelRochestercarblistsat$311Andtheyretooleduptomakemillions!,Brown
stressed.
Thefirstcarburetorwasintendedforusewithdiversefuels,suchaskeroseneandalcohol,
because,atthetime(the1890s),gasolinewasnothingmorethanawasteproductin
kerosenedistillation.
StudiedChemistry
Brownwentbacktocollegeandstudiedchemistryforseveralyearsbeforehefelt
knowledgeableenoughtothrowhisweightintothedefenseofhisFishcarburetorprogram,

andatthesametimetacklethegreatoilscamheuncovered.
Ivestudiedpetroleumchemistryforyears,andIenrolledinGMscarburetionclassesin
ordertoknowwhatImtalkingabout,Brownsaid.AndIknow,now,whysomuchuseless
verbiagehascloudedthepicturewhenitcomestocarburetion,mileageandpollution.
Brown,whoproducedthefirstdialfuelgasolinealcoholcarebackin1979,explainedthatthe
compressionratioinanengineholdsthekeytocombustioncombustionwhichproduces
horsepower,mileageandexhaustemissions.
Theseexplanationsareoversimplified,ofcourse,Brownexplained.But,ifapistontravels4
inchesupwardtocompresstheairfuelmixtureinacylinder5incheslong,thecompressionis
saidtobe4to1.Fueladairmixtures,likegunpowder,providemorepowerthemoretheyare
compressed.
Driverswhorecallthemusclecarsofthe1960sand70scarswithimmensepower,and
lowmileage,whichweredesignedtorunonpremiumfuelwillrecalltetraethyllead,or
simplyethyl,thestuffusedtomakegasolineperformbetterinthosebig,higher
compressionengines.
HighPricedGas
Tetraethylleadalsowasapremiumairpollutant,andeventuallyreactiontothefactushered
inthenownearlyuniversalunleadedgasolines.Curiously,allgasolineisunleadedwhen
refinedonlytodaywepayahigherpriceforit.Refinersclaimthehigherpriceisduetothe
needforadditivesotherthantetraethyllead.Butskepticssayitsmerelyacurioustwistof
supplyanddemandpricing,controlledbythecartel.
Intheearly1970s,Browncontinued,thefederalgovernmentforcedtheautomakersto
lowerthecompressionratiossettingautomotivedesignandtoolingbackadecadeor
more.Theearlierengineswereunabletorunsuchhighcompressions,because,asthe
enginedevelopedspeed,severehammeringsandknockingswouldresulttheinfamous
ping!
Brown,tryingnottobetootechnical,explainedthatthesocalledoctaneratingwas
introducedasameansofratingtheabilityofafueltoresistsuchknocking.Obviously,oil
companiesandautomakingcompanieshadtoworktogether.
Brownfurrowedhisbrowforemphasiswhenhereachedthispointinhisexplanationbecause
hewasnearingthekeyfactorinthegreatfuelcarburetorscamhehaduncovered.
Theproblemisthatinalltheseyears,noonehasevernoticedthattheoctaneratingisnot
dependentoncompressionfactorsalone.Itwas,andis,almosttotallydependentonadefect
intheidlecircuitofalmosteverycarburetormanufacturedintheentireworldfrom1890to

presenttheFishcarburetorbeingthesoleexception
Brownhaspublishedhisanalysisofcarburetionindetail.Essentially,whilelearningallhe
couldaboutcarburetion,fromeverysourcehecouldfind,Browndiscoveredthattheoilauto
industrybuiltitsmultibilliondollarbusinessbyrequiringmultibilliondollarrefinerycapacities
inordertobreakcrudeoildownintogasolinewithanoctanerating.
BurnCrude
Itsahugescam!Brownstressed.Dieselfuelusedtobeextremelycheap,becausethe
gasolinewasdistilledout,andtheleftoverwaslabeledDieselfuel.Itsanabsolutefactthat
crudeoilunrefined,cheapcrudecanberunstraightinaDieselengine,withitshigh
compressionratio.Crudeanddieselfuelsarechemicallyalmostidentical.
Well,withtheFishcarburetor,youcanruncrudeinagasolinetypeenginefairlyefficiently
ifthecompressionratioishighandthereisnotmorepollutionthanwithrefinedgasolines,
saidBrown.
Brownspenetratingquestionis:DidtheautomakersknowthisabouttheFishcarburetor
whenheapproachedthemin1934?CouldthathavebeenthereasontheSecurities&
ExchangeCommission(SEC)landedonhimwhenhetriedtomanufactureandmarketthe
carburetoronhisown?Couldthatbewhythepostofficeauthoritiescamedownonhimwith
theoldfalsefraudchargesgameandnearlydestroyedhisbusinessin1954?(Fish
ultimatelyrefutedthosechargesincourt.)
Hiscompanyfinallyfailedbecauseofhisdeath,Brownadded.ButFishhadabetter
product,andtheworldbeatapathtohisdoornottopraisehimandmakehimdeservedly
richno,theysuppressedhimbecausehiscarburetorcouldhavedemolishedtheiroctane
ratinggame.
Disqualified
BrownglowedwithangerasherecalledoneofthealltimelowpointsoftheFishcarburetor
suppressionstory:Backin1955,FireballRobertsdroveaFishcarburetorequippedBuickin
theDaytona500race,andhebeat3Chryslersupercharged300Gsbyamileandahalf.
TheydisqualifiedRobertsforreasonsnevergiven.Now,inmybook,thattheheightof
suppression.FireballsvictoryandhisneedtomakefewerpitstopsbecauseoftheFish
carburetorthreatenedtomakeFishamajorfactorintheaftermarket.
Brownspointissimple:Ifthereisnoneedforanoctanerating,whichisapparently
deliberatelyengineered,thereisnoneedtorefinethefuel.Iftheresnoneedtorefinethe
fuel,thentheresnoneedforExxon,Standard,Shellandthelike.Wecansimplypumpthe
crudeoutoftheground,assomeKansasfarmersdo,letthesandandwatersinktothe

bottomoftanks,anduseitdirectlyasfuel.
Browngrinned,thenexplained:Dontletyourimageofmotoroilinthecanconfuseyouwhen
thinkingaboutcrudeasitcomesoutoftheground.CrudeismuchclosertoDieselfuel.
ProvedIt
WhenBrown,hismechanicsanddistributorsfirstcompletedtheirresearchonthisdiscovery
abouttheFishcarburetorsmultifuelcapacity,oneKentuckydealertoldChannel18
televisioninLexingtonaboutit.
Thetelevisionpeoplesaid,Proveit.
Usinga350Chevy,themechanicusedcrude,kerosene,Dieselfuelandevendrycleaning
solvent,asthenewscamerasrecordedit.Ittookonly7secondsforthemechanictoadjust
theFishcarburetorwhenswitchingfromonefueltothenext,Brownsaid.
Onaddition,thecarburetorconsistentlyproveditsabilitytobrigemissionlevelsdownlower
thananycarburetionsystemtocomeoutofDetroit

HIGHPERFORMANCECARBURETORS
Claimshavebeenmadeforfuelefficiencyinexcessof100milespergallonthroughtheuse
ofexoticcarburetors,thebestknownbeingthosedesignedbyJohnRobertFishandCharles
NelsonPogue.Theseclaimsusuallygoontosaythatthedesignsweresabotagedor
otherwisesupressedbypetroleumcompaniesand/orautomobilemanufacturers,inan

attempttomaintainthetechnologicalstatusquo.
Ofthetwodesigns,thePogueCarburetortendedtobethesourceofmoreextravagant
claims.AlthoughassignedUSPatent#2,026,798(andothers),thecarburetorwasan
experimentaldeviceandwasneverputintolargescaleproduction.Thetheorybehindthe
PogueCarburetorinvolvedtheuseofacombinationofpressureandheattoimprovethe
conversionofliquidfueltovapor,andtherebyimprovecombustionandefficiency.
IncontrasttothePoguedesign,tensofthousandsofthevariousmodelsoftheFish
Carburetorwereeventuallymanufactured.Owingtovariousfinancialandproduction
problems,paidordersfrom1936werenotdelivereduntil1948,leadingtoalengthybattle
overallegedpostalfraud.Seriousproductionfinallygotunderwayinthemid1950s.Ithas
beenreportedthattheFishachieved20%percentbettergasmileageand30%more
horsepowerwhenmountedonmanydifferentengines.AfterFishdiedin1958,thedesign
waslicensedtoafirmthatsubsequentlyfolded.From19811996,aversionoftheFish
CarburetorwasagainmanufacturedbytheBrownCarburetorCompany.

ThefirstFishcarburetorwashandbuiltin1933andtestedbyFordMotorCo1934.Ford
admittedthecarburetordelivered34%bettermileagebutthendemandedthatJohnRobert
Fishtheinventorimmediatelyfurnishaworldwideservicenetwork.
Undaunted,Fishputtogetherhisownorganizationin1937andby1947wasoutingouta
handfulofthem.By1954afterrepeatedbattleswitheveryonefromthePostOfficetothe
USNavytheFishCarburetorCompanyofDaytonaBeach,FLwascrankingoutover2000
carburetorsamonth.
JohnFishdiedin1958andhisCompanyfoldedthenextyear.AnothercompanyinSan
Diegoboughttherightstothecarburetorin1961andproduced6000ofthemupuntilthey

wentbankruptin1965.TheSanDiegoCompanyneglectedtoputbushingsaroundthe
throttleshaftoftheirversionoftheFishcarburetorandasaresultalmostalltheircarburetors
developedleaksinthecastings.
TheFishwasguaranteedforaminimum20%increaseinfueleconomy.30%isaverage.
TheFishwonalotofstockcarracesinthe50s
TheFishwillrunonanyliquidfuelthatwillburnhotterthanrubbingalcohol,includingbutnot

Inthetopphototheentirecarburetorispictured.Thefloatchamberontheleftoperateson
thesameprinciplesasothercarburetors.Thediaphragmplatefitsbetweenthefloatchamber

circuit.Whenthefuelpickuparmmovesforwardsuddenlythepressureclosestheleafvalve.
Thefuelthatisaheadofthefuelpickuparmisforcedupthearm,whichishollow.Atthetop

TherearenojetsormeteringrodsintheFishcarburetor.Thefuelmeteringgrooveatthe
bottomofthefuelpickuparmreplacestheidle,intermediate,andhighspeedcircuitsina
regularcarburetor.Thisgroovestartsat0.0023atidleandgoesto0.078inchatfullthrottle.

Whenthepickuparmmovesoverthisgrooveitcreatesaconstantlychangingmainjetsize.
Thechangingjetsizeiswherealotofoutfuelefficiencycomesfrom.
Thebottomphotoshowstheviewfromthetopofthecarburetorthroat.Atpartthrottleairis
drawnthroughthetopthreeholesandmixedairandfuelispulledthroughsmallerholesin
thebottom.Thisisasuperiormethodofatomizingfuel.Atfullthrottlefuelcomesoutallsix
holesinthethrottleshaft.Thisfeatureallowstheuseofregularsixholesinthethrottleshaft.
Thisfeatureallowstheuseofregularoctanegasolineinhighcompressionenginesand
eliminatestheneedforafuelwithanoctanerating(morefullydiscussedinBrownsBookof
Carburetor).
Bylooseningtheallenheadscrewonthethrottlevalveyoucanchangetheairfuelratioby
adjustingthrottlevalveangle.Youcanadjusttheairvolumejustasyoucanadjustfuel
volumewiththeneedlevalve,from20to1formaximumfueleconomyto6to1forwood
alcohol
InplainEnglish,wevebeenrunninghighcompressionenginesonlowtestgasolinewithno
problemsandhavenoideaswhenwellstopclimbingonthecompressionrations.Wemight

TheFishCarburetorStory
TheFishCarburetorwasoriginallyinventedbyJohnRobertFishinAmericaintheearly
Thirties.J.R.wasnotanautomobileengineerbutabrilliantallroundinventorwithastrong
graspofpressuredifferentialsandexpertiseinmachinetooling.Hewaspossiblythe
originatorofthe"IronLung"asheinventeda"pressurebag"forhiswifewhoappearedto
sufferwithseriouscirculationproblems.Theraisingandloweringofthebagpressure
apparentlyhelpedhergreatly.0nanotheroccasion,BobFishcabledthePresidentwith
instructionsatgreatlengthonhowaverysimplepressureboxcouldbeloweredtorescue
somesailorswhoweretrappedinasunkensubmarine!
CarburetionPrinciples
Whenhecametolookatcarburetorsinitially,itwastostopthewasteoffuelasitslopped
aboutoncornering,brakingandhardacceleration.Allstandardorconventionalcarburetors
areentirelydependantonastablefuelleveltofeedthroughthe"Manometer"principle.He
demonstratedthepointbyfittingaglassjugtothebonnet(hood)ofacar.Thelevelchanged
byliterallyinchesonhardcornering.Thetypicalfourbarrelcarburetorofthetimehadfloat
chambersalmostallroundtheunittopreventstarvationbutitwasverywastefulonthehigh
sideofthefloatchamber.Allconventionalcarburetorsstillusethe"Manometer"or"U"tube
principletodayandrelyonaVenturitoacceleratetheincomingairsodroppingthepressure
whichthenliftsthefuellevelthroughthejetting.Unfortunately,thistendstostranglethe
engineathigherrevs.Fuelofcoursehasamuchhigherinertiathanairsojettinghastobe
muchricheratlowspeeds(airvelocity)whichmeansthatwhenthefuelfinallycatchesup

withtheairflow,itwouldbechronicallyoverrichrequiringittobecorrectedbyan"air
correctorjet"tobleeddowntheoverrichmainjet.
Smallcarburetorssuitbottomendflexibility,responseandfuelconsumptionbutnottopend
powerwhichthenrequiresalargerormulticarburetorsetupthatinturnproducespoorfuel
consumptionandflexibility.BobFishproducedacarburetorthatentirelyeliminatedthese
compromisesas:
Fuellevelwasnotcriticaltometeringunderanyconditions.
NoVenturiwasrequiredtopotentiallystrangletheairflow.
Asingleprogressivemeteringgroovedidawaywithbothmainandcorrectorjets,aswellthe
Venturi.
Thecarbworksonpressuredifferentialnotairspeed,whichmeansthatitisalmost
instantlyselfadjusting&selfcompensatingsoanychangeinweatheroraltituderequiresno
adjustmentsormodificationsaswithconventionalcarbs.Henceallroundsuitabilityforcars,
boats,aircraft,mountainorpressurecharginguse.
Insteadoftheusualonemainfueldischargepointwithinthecarburetor,the"Fish"hasfrom
SIXtoTENleadingtovastlysuperioratomizationandthereforemuchimprovedvaporization
andsincewetfuelDOESNOTburn(onlythevapor),betterandmorecompletecombustionis
ensuredenablingmorepowertobeextractedfromthesameamountoffuel.

potential.

frequentlymadePolePositionandgainedthetrophy.Repeatedly,however,hisracetires
developed"mysteriousproblems"whenleadingtheraceconvincingly.These"faults"
suspiciouslydidnotseemtooccurinthe"Works"cars.ItwouldseemthattheFishCarb
couldnotbeallowedtosucceedeitheronthetrackorcommercially.
TheRevival
IntheearlyFifties,oneofJ.R.'smanybackers,aCanadianbythenameofEricLiebmanof
"FishCanadianCarburetors"fromWillowdale,Ontario,talkedJ.R.intoproducinga"sleeved
down"M1calledtheSM(SmallMedium)andadaptittothegrowingtuningmarketforVW
Beetles.Thishelpedthefactory'sfinancialsituationforawhile.Theninreturnforhis
considerableongoingfinancialbacking,J.R.grantedEricLiebmanexclusive"rights"tothe
NorthernStates,CanadaandtherestoftheWorld.BobHendersonfirstmetEricLiebmanin
1956andwasgrantedaDealershipforpartofCanada.In1959,BobHendersonreturnedto
theU.K.withafewsamplesforhisfriendstotryout.Theinterestwasconsiderableandan
unexpectedbusinessthentookoff.
TheAmericanscouldnotkeepupwiththeUKdemandsoEricLiebmangrantedBob
Hendersonhis"restoftheWorld"rightswithaviewtobeingsuppliedbackwithcarbsfrom
thenewproductionoffurtherimprovedmodels.BobHendersonwasgrantedimprovement
patentsforthe"MinnowFish"(smallfish)versionsandobtainedregisteredtrademarksfor
thenameMINNOWandtheFishdeviceitself.
