Description
To provide the student with an opportunity to apply knowledge to practice in the
assessment of patient/client needs and the delivery of care, with specific regard to
patients in medical/surgical nursing, and the opportunity to work in specialist
placements.

Learning Outcomes
1. Provide family centred nursing care to the child with a variety of healthcare
needs in the medical-surgical setting.
2. Apply research findings to nursing practice.
3. Contribute to the multi-disciplinary team including the dissemination of relevant
information to other members of the team both verbally and in writing.

4. Interact appropriately with the child and family and other members of the
healthcare organisation.
5. In specialist areas demonstrate the ability to communicate with clients/ families
and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
6. Demonstrate and understanding of the role of the nurse & midwife in the
specialist area.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Maintain a safe enviornment.
Students will explore issues associated with maintaing a safe environment and
become familiar with the correct use of manual handling aids, treatment bed and
other aids to therapeutic care delivery..
Policies and Procedures.
Students will be expected to become familiar with policies and procedure relevant
to area of practice..
Assessment and Delivery of Care.
Students will participate under supervision in the assessment, delivery and
documentation of care. They will have an opportunity to observe and question
staff about what they do and why the do it..
