INTRODUCTION
Gifted students are assets of incaluable value to the society.
They can contribute best to the promotion of art, science and
mathematics also develop science, philosophy education and meta
physics in a variety of ways. The present study purpose to examine the
perceptions of elementary school teachers regarding gifted students,
with reference of mathematics.
Mathematically gifted students differ from the general
group of students studying math in the following abilities:spontaneous
formation of problems, flexibility in handling data, mental agility of
fluency of ideas, data oraganizaton ability, originality of
interpretation, ability to transfer ideas ,and ability to generalize. No list
of characteristics of the mathematically gifted i ludes o putatio al

,a d et at le els p io to alge a , this is o
o l used
as the criterion that determines who get to move on to more
interesting material.
Strangely enough, gifted students are the forgotten
students in the class. They possess superior intellectual and other
abilities, thus they are to take care of themselves. One aspect of
diversity in school and education, less observed in pedagogical
discussion, are the mathematically highly able students. A gifted
student is one with exceptional potential and/or performance across
a wide range of abilities in one or more areas.

CONTENT
Mathematics is an expression of human mind which reflects the
active will ,the contemplative reason and the desire for aesthetic
perfection. primary school teachers will always have available
additional material for their more able pupils in mathematics,to
ensure that they are challenged sufficiently and achieve their
potential. But sometimes they come across a pupil for whom their
normal stock of additional material seems hopelessly inadequate and
insufficiently demanding such a pupil may be regarded as gifted in
mathematics.
MEANING AND DEFINITION OF GIFTED STUDENTS
Sometimes gifted students are wrongly understood as only those
students who have high intelligence or high intellectual abilities .But it
is not so,as when we talk of gifted student we talk of all the precocious
or highly intellectual and crate student who excel the ordinary
student in any walk of life or any field of subjects.
CHARACTERSTICS OF GIFTED STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS
Before determining what is the best for a gifted student ,
we would like to better understand them.Students who are truly
precocious in math display a great preponderance of the
characterstics below.

1.mental characterstics

Skills in numbers
Counting and numerical operations are performed quickly and
accurately
with
remarkable
facility.They love
to add,
subtract, multiply and divide at an early stage.
Manipulative skill
Gifted students
show an ability to fit things together and to
recognize their parts. They also can study a diagram and construct
an object from it.Block designs and mechanic sets make them
delight. l k o ho to ake this, I can find a piece of wood to fit
this et . is f e ue tl hea d f o the gifted stude ts.
Reasoning and other cognitive abilities
They have high cognitive abilities , for which they observe facts
keenly and draw conclusions from them. They ask mathematics
questions and on the basis of answers go on to conclude other
facts. In discussions they show the ability to talk logically.Their
reasoning ability may , sometimes ,cause irritation to the parents or
the teachers.
In mathematics, these characteristics are listed in order to aid the
classroom teacher or gifted specialist in the evaluation of students
for placement into the elementary school accelerated programe .

Proceeeds quickly from a specific set of instances to a

generalization
Has developed good study habits
Preserves in problem solving
Truly enjoys mathematics and its challenges
Demonstrates a variety of ways of solving problems
It persistent and self motivated

Academic Achievement
Gifted students are not only superior in intelligence, They are also
superior in their achievement in mathematics subject. They rarely
show marked unevenness in their achievement ,because they work
hard and devotedly .
Students who are talented in mathematics often
demonstrate an uneven pattern of mathematical understanding and
development, since some are much stronger in concept development
than they are in computation.
IDENTIFICATION OF MATHEMATICAL GIFTEDNESS
In every age there is need for gifted persons who will make a major
contribution to new development of mathematics. Various researches
have been conducted to identify the gifted from the non-gifted.
Students who are gifted in mathematics may not excel in other school
subjects, and therefore may not be formally identified. Even within
mathematics and science disciplines, students abilities may very
depending on the topic or the activity. Some students may exhibit
some of these characterstics spontaneously and others may display

their talents only when presented with interesting problems. Many of

the talents can be developed, and all students should be given problems
where they can demonstrate their talents.
Standardized achievement tests may no identiy
students who are gifted and talented in mathematics ,one reason is
that these tests often concentrate on low level tasks.

Scholastic Achievement Test

Scholastic achievement test is very much helpful in determining and
diagnosing the strength and weakness of children in various
school subjects expectially mathematics subject. A detailed study of
the test result would reveal the strength and weakness of the
group.
Standardized achievement tests may not identify students who are
gifted and talented in mathematics. one reason is that these tests
often concentrate on low level tasks.
WHY SHOULD WE DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT FOR

MATHEMATICALLY GIFTED STUDENTS

Gifted students differ from their classmates in three key areas that
are especially important in mathematics..These are summarized in
below.
How Gifted Learners Differ from classmates
1. Pace at which they learn.
2. Depth of their understanding.
3. Interests that they hold(makers, 1982).

Math Enrichment programs

Mathematical Games
Challe ges stude ts to use o l the digits , ,
and 6 in any order, with the operations +,-,*,_ ,^(raised
to power),sqrt(square root),and !( factorial), to write
e p essio s fo the ou ti g u e s th ough
.

Patterns & algebra

Five coins and the magic doubling pot
challenges students to analyze two patterns to see
which yields the most money. This activity is designed
to build on reading and enjoying the doubling
pattern in two of everything.
Mathematics pentathlon program
Pentathlon games are open-ended,higher level thinking games
that involve math and
general problem
- solving games, supportive
curricular and instructional activities,and assessment
tools for students in grades k-7. This motivational
program strengthens basic math concepts and
skills, alligins with STEM and stimulates creative
thinking while developing problem-solving skills.

PRACTICAL GIFTED EDUCATION- AFTER SCHOOL

MATH PROBLEM
Our math curriculum covers 5 key skill areas:
Numbers and operations-elementary school arithmetic
from simple counting through fractions and beyond.
Measurement- measurement concepts, including telling
time and counting money
Geometry- characterstics and properties of geometric
shapes
Algebra- patterns ,relations, functions, use of models
and algebraic symbols
Data analysis- collecting,oraganising,displaying and
analyzing data.

GIFTED STUDENTS

WHAT ARE THEE RESPONSIBILITY OF SCHOOL AND TEACHERS IN

DEVELOPING GIFTEDNESS IN MATHEMATICS?
Classroom teachers and school districts share the
responsibility of addressing the needs of gifted
students.
Teachers need training and support in recognizing and
addressing the needs of gifted students.
Teachers need training and support in recognizing
and addressing the needs of the mathematically
gifted teachers who teach mathematics to gifted
learners need a strong background in mathematics
content. If the school only a few students with special
eeds a d does t ha e su h a tea he , a e to f o
outside the school should be located to work with
individuals.
A coordinated curriculum plan needs to be in place so
that the mathematical experiences for students are not
duplicated or interrupted from one year to the next.
The school should have an organized support system
that includes resource books, technology and human
resources.
INDICATORS
OF
MATHEMATICAL GIFTED
NESS
Unusual
curiosity about numbers
mathematical information
Ability to understand and apply ideas quickly

and

High ability to see patterns and think abstractly

Use of flexible and creative strategies and
solutions.
Ability to transfer a mathematical concept to an
unfamiliar situation
GIFTED PERSONALITIES IN MATHEMATICS
Richard Taylor

Richard Lawrence Taylor British mathematician working in the field of

number theory.
Kenneth Alan Ribet
Kenneth Alan Ribet is an American mathematician, currently a
professor of mathematics at the university of California.

manjul bhargava

CONCLUSION
Mathematical talents are demonstrated in a variety of
ways .Being a gifted or talented mathematics student has frequently
been defined as scoring above the 95th percentile on a test of
mathematical achievement.

Some students showing mathematical talents may have

this ability, it is not a necessary or sufficient characterstics of gifted
mathematics
students. Many gifted and talented mathematics
students are impatient with details and do not care to spend time on
computation.
Whether
math
problems
require
computation
skills, problem solving stratergies, inferential thinking skills or reductive
reasoning, mathematically tallented students are often able to decern
answers with unusual speed and accuracy.Mathematically gifted
students are able to see relationships among topics, concepts, and
ideas without the intervention of formal instruction specifically geared
to that particular content (Heid, 1983). Due to their intuitive
understanding of mathematical function and processes, they may skip
over steps and be unable to explain how they arrived at the correct
answer to a problem (Greenes, 1981).
