Dear Statianews reader,

I want to wish you a merry christmas and a happy

new year, hope you spend some loving times with family and friends… I wish to thank everybody that helps with the paper, that ask me to put something in it, that point out things to me and send me emails.

This edition I don’t really feel like having a difficult political display of what is going on on St. Eustatius. From now, I will put all the letters to the editor that appear in the Daily Herald about Statia on www.statianews.com

I also decided not to have politicians talking about

the federal elections in Statianews for now. Every

thing about these elections I will put on the site too. I only show a picture with the PLP candidates.

I was planning to put some opinions about the

social economic development in this edtion, since we had a town hall meeting about that. I put the article that was written about that on the site too.

For the rest, I want to show you reader what a lot of activitiy is going on around Christmas time on Statia. I wonder how things are on St. Kitts were Christmas time is also Carnival time. Pre Carnival time started December 14th already and now the real Carnival is about to start.

It can’t be as sweet on St. Kitts as it is on Statia.

Two nights in a row, I heard the wind blow music past our porche. The killi killi band when the Buzzy

Bee had their party, and the other night, I heard a christmas choir, very lovely, singing Christmas Carols at a house nearby. And today, I even heard

a trumpet playing.

Three nights of people talking, laughing, singing, people yelling: “Bye!” “Bye!” We hear the screeking of the crickets and the tree frogs and we hear the music coming with the wind.

Enjoy the Christmas pictures,

STATIAS LT. GOVERNOR LEFT STATIA

Mr. Hyden Gittens, his wife Sylvana and their children playing Wii at a teachers’ house. Last month, Mr. Hyden Gittens left Statia. It is still unknown who will be Statia’s next Lt. Governor. The spokesman of Mrs. Bijleveld told Statianews that we probably have to wait a little longer than the First of January before we will know. For now; Thanks to the Gittens family for the good moments you gave in the past years, all the best in Curacao.

THE ANTILLEAN ELECTIONS AND STATIA

Statia has two political party’s that join the federal elections next January 22. The DP, with four candidates and the PLP with 7 candidates.

The DP candidates are Julian Woodley, Reginald Zaandam, Adelka Spanner and Joshua Spanner. The PLP candidates are Millicent LijfrockMarsdin, Laurens Duiveman, Arlene Schmidt Spanner, Brenda van Putten, Richelline Leerdam, Esman F. Roosberg, and Clyde I. van Putten.

The party who gets the most votes, wins. The candidate with the majority of votes within that winning party, will be Statia’s next senator.

In the Antillean parliament, Statia and Saba both have one seat, Bonaire and Sint Maarten have three seats and Curacao has 14 seats.

After the elections, when a new Government will be formed, this Government will be demissionair. We don’t know if they will have the same amount of Ministers and State Secretary’s as presently. It is for example not necessary to have a minister of education and a minis ter of health. It remains to be seen if Statia will have a State Secretary in this new government.

What a senator in the Antillean parliament can do for Statia is difficult to know. I think it’s best to read about that in the different news papers. Or to listen to the radio.

DOLLARIZATION

Last edition of Statianews, I published a transla tion of some of the answers Mr. Dassen and Mr. van Haeften gave me to my questions. Their picture was not to be found, but was found after all. The first of January 2011, the US dollar will be Statia’s currency.

The most important question about the new currency is:

Why Dollar and not Euro?

The Antilles are oriented on the dollar. 80% of trade takes place with dollar regions. Most tourists come from U.S. dollars regions. The euro is an expensive currency compared to the dollar. That means that everything on the BES islands would become much more expensive, this would have negative impact on welfare. This effect is clearly visible on the French part of Sint Maarten.

December 1, Lions’ Den.
I am sorry to say, but to me, the meeting about the social
economic development plan
Okay, this is what he told me, I can add nothing The se ‐
cond smart person on that meeting, was my husband, he
said that we can use our taxsystem to encourage econo‐
mic growth, is this taxsystem included in the social eco‐
nomic developpment plan? No. The third smart person
was Jaap, to come up with the issue of education. A lot of
reaction that provoked and here, on the spatial planning
meeting, the discussion was about the language of in ‐
struction at our schools. This is the chaotic society of
Statia, this is Statia’s culture, even though there were not
so many local black people who came to the meeting, the
percentage of foreign pensioneers or almost pensioneers,
was very high. A lot of the people in the room I had never
seen before. They did not talk though, apart from one or
two. Jaap for example, but to me and I think to most
Statians “he belongs to the Furniture”, so…
Don’t feel offended, let me explain. In my opinion, all the Carib ‐
bean islands are crazy. Crazy in the sense of “colorfull”. I come to

bean island, there is no escape, everybody is everybody’s mirror, everybody knows everybody and this
bean island, there is no escape, everybody is everybody’s mirror,
everybody knows everybody and this makes everybody a little
crazy. Everybody must show who they are, there is no escape
from that. And so everybody does and that’s why Statia is a
colorfull place. The one person that said the most sensible thing
on the spatial planning meeting, was Alida Francis. I know you
see Lady Alida Franicis everywhere, but, he, this is a small island!
What she said was that we have to make sure there will not be a
gap between the rich en the poor. This is a christmas thought:
“We don’t want a society of haves and have nots, if there is
prosperity, we have to share this prosperity.” Prosperity ust
come if we are European and have a USdollar as currency. I don’t
understand why politicians have no feeling for entrepeneurship
at all. I don’t know anything about making money, but having a
US dollar seems like an adventaged when we are a part of Hol ‐
land foreign investors, but for local entrepeneurs. Buying and
selling, I would say. Or producing and selling maybe even better.
But again, I don’t know anything about these things. European
rules apply for Statia. An opportunity, not especially for foreign
investors, but for local entrepeneurs. Buying and selling, I would
say. Or producing and selling maybe even better. But again, I
don’t know anything about these things.

Lots of good food for Statia’s senior citizens.

The auxilary home has grown over the years and the wings that were added in the past will be given the names of the founders. Mr. Bakker also explained what is going to happen in the future. After the merging of Queen Beatrix Medical Centre and the Auxilary home, there will be a new foundation, which will have no ties with the local government. From January First, 2010, the Dutch Mini stry of VWS will take the responsibility for healthcare. Soon, the Auxilary home will get a new bus.

A POEM AND A PICTURE

This is a poem Jan de Jong wrote in 1983, he was living on Statia for six years then. When he wrote this poem, he was sitting behind his hou- se on the concrete roof of the cis- tern. His house was where Marysols’ beauty salon is now in Fort Oran- jestraat.
