Long To Reign Over Us . . .

63 Years On And
Still Going . . .
RR By Gregory Katz

IT WAS A DAY for the history

books. But it was not in her
majestys temperament to
make much of a fuss.

On Wednesday, September 9, 2015,

about 5:30pm, Queen Elizabeth II
became the longest reigning monarch
in Britains proud and often turbulent
history, dating back more than a millennium to the days when kings and queens
enjoyed absolute power.
Serving as sovereign for 23,226 days
(about 63 years and 7 months), according to Buckingham Palace, Elizabeth
surpassed Queen Victoria, her greatgreat-grandmother, a woman so powerful
that she stamped an era with her name.
She has served longer than Henry VIII
(37 years), longer than any of the King
Richards, far longer than her own father,
King George VI (15 years). She certainly
reigned longer than King Edward VIII,
her uncle, who abdicated after less than
a year so he could marry Wallis Simpson,
a divorced American.
RATIONING
Elizabeth was there before the Beatles, there as the nation coped with
postwar rationing, there during what she
called the annus horribilis, when the
monarchy appeared threatened as three
of her four children became separated or
divorced in 1992. She was there in 1997,
when a shocked nation mourned the untimely death of the late Princess Diana.

Now a great-grandmother, Elizabeth

has overseen a blossoming of the British
monarchy, symbolized by her grandson,
Prince William, whose royal wedding in
2011 was watched around the world and
who since then has produced two popular
children, including a future king.
The big day was a day of astonishing
achievement, but the 89-year-old queen
marked it as she has done so many times
before: Quietly going about her business,
opening a railway line, unveiling a plaque,
meeting her subjects.
MILESTONE
She did acknowledge the event, however, telling an adoring crowd at a Scottish railway station it was not a milestone
she had sought out.
I thank you all, and all of the many
others at home and overseas, for your
touching messages of great kindness,
said Elizabeth, wearing a two-tone blue
coat and matching hat. (It was) not one
to which I have ever aspired.
Elizabeth didnt say much her
speech lasted perhaps a minute or two.
She certainly didnt boast about her lon-

RRUK To Re-Settle Up To
20,000 Syrian Refugees

PRIME MINISTER David Cameron

says the UK will re-settle up to 20,000
Syrian refugees from camps in Turkey,
Jordan and Syria over the next five
years.
The figure represents a vast expansion of Britains refugee program, a
change signaled by Cameron last month.
He told Parliament Monday that
Britain has a moral responsibility to act,
citing shocking images in recent days.
Cameron said vulnerable children and
orphans will be given priority.
New arrivals will be given five-year
humanitarian protection visas upon
arrival in Britain.
The government plans to bring
refugees from camps neighboring Syria
into Britain but is not planning to accommodate those who have already entered
Europe. Britain has also added to the
financial aid it is providing to refugee
camps in surrounding countries.
Meanwhile, Ireland has announced
it will take in at least 1,800 refugees,
tripling initial plans announced in July
to accept roughly 600 over the next
two years.
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald
said that a more comprehensive re-

That just wouldnt be Elizabeth,
whose modest quietude has, paradoxically, developed a grandeur all its own over
the decades. In her silence lies mystery.
What does she really think? Few really

RRIntelligence Chief Warns

Of Threat, Seeks More
Powers

BRITAINS head
of domestic intelligence has warned
that the level of
terrorist plotting
against Britain is
at its highest level
in more than three decades.
MI5 chief Andrew Parker used a BBC
Radio interview last month to call for
new powers to monitor communications
to track terror plots. He said the proliferation of new Internet technologies
poses a difficult challenge. It was the
first live broadcast interview given by
any British intelligence chief.
Parker says they are using secure
apps and Internet communication to
try to broadcast their message and
incite and direct terrorism amongst
people who live here who are prepared
to listen.
Parker said British police and security services had intervened to foil six
terrorist plots in the last 12 months,
more than at any point in his 32-year
career.

of her accomplishment her reign did,

after all, begin with the abrupt death
of her father others in the British
establishment showed no hesitation in
praising the only monarch most Britons
have ever known.
Oversize photographs of Elizabeth
dominated most newspapers, with the
tone set by The Daily Telegraph, which
called the queen our rock of stability for
63 years in its headline.
Opening a railway captures the same
sense of understatement, but we should
not doubt that today is a great moment
in our national story, it said.
Elizabeth came to the throne in 1952
at age 25 upon the death of her father,
King George VI. Her official coronation
the following year marked one of the first
major public events that was televised.
She has cut back on her official travels
in recent years and rarely goes overseas

now, but still adheres to a busy schedule

of royal duties. Her son, Prince Charles,
has represented his mother at a number
of occasions, and grandsons William
and Prince Harry have also moved into
much more prominent royal roles, as
has Williams wife Kate, the Duchess of
Cambridge.
AFFECTION
But it is the queen who seems to
command the most affection as Britons
celebrate her unique role in national life.
In Parliament, the prime minister led a
series of affectionate tributes.
The reign of Queen Elizabeth has
been a golden thread running through
three post-war generations, and shes
presided over more than two-thirds of
our history as a full democracy, Cameron said. Her selfless sense of service
and duty have earned her unparalleled
respect and admiration, not only in Britain but around the world.
That thought was echoed as well on
the other side of the globe.
Hers has been a long, rich life of
service to her country, to the Commonwealth, Australian Prime Minister
Tony Abbott told his fellow lawmakers.
We wish her and her loving, remarkable
husband health and happiness in the
years ahead.

British Media Loves The Idea

Of A Margaret Thatcher $10 Bill
BRITAIN is abuzz with
US presidential candidate Jeb Bushs suggestion that Margaret
Thatcher should grace
the new $10 bill.
Mock-ups of a $10
note featuring the former prime minister
feature prominently
on newspaper websites last month.
Even the BBC couldnt resist, pasting
an image of a steely-eyed, if slightly
smiling, Thatcher onto the bill.
Bush made Thatcher his choice
during the September 16 Republican
presidential debate after candidates
were asked their choice for the bill,
which President Barack Obama has
said will feature a woman.
I would go with Ronald Reagans
partner, Margaret Thatcher, Bush
said. Probably illegal, but what the
heck?

Thatcher, who served as prime

minister from 1979-1990, remains a
divisive figure in Britain. She is admired by conservatives in America for
her friendship with the late President
Ronald Reagan.

Businessman Train Commuter

Refuses To Give Up Pregnant
Womans Pre-Booked Seat

A PREGNANT woman was forced to stand

on a train journey due to a businessman not
giving up his seat that she had pre-booked.
The Mother-to-be, Mhari-Claire Doolan,
29, was 34 weeks into her pregnancy, and
said she was embarrassed and angry, and
left in agony after the man would not give
up the seat, even after showing her ticket.
Doolan said she showed the man her ticket
on the train from Birmingham to Manchester,
but she claimed he laughed in her face. Then
she explained how she was forced to stand
for more than an hour and a half until another
seat became free.
Doolan said: I was already tired and in
pain and to be honest Im so heavily pregnant
I should probably not be travelling by train, so
I made sure I had a seat booked.
A spokesman for the train operators
CrossCountry said: The train manager
knows how to deal with such circumstances
and they would do their best to encourage the
person to move, although we cannot force
someone to move from the seat. If we failed
to move them, we would endeavour to find
an alternative seat instead.
He added: The customer is also entitled
to compensation and, in the case of MhariClaire Doolan, we would encourage her to get
in touch with us.

Christmas Pudding Fire In

Microwave Brings Out Firemen
FIREMEN in Devon will now believe that
Christmas does not come just once a year,
and found out that there were certain skills
needed to cook a Christmas Pudding last
month.
The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue
Service were called out to a house in Barnstaple following a report that a Christmas
pudding had caught fire in a microwave oven.
The blaze was contained quickly as it was
restricted to the pudding and the microwave.
It was still unclear why the Christmas treat
was being cooked in September.

Leopard-Print Hairstyle Sees

Girl Sent Home From School
Mother Cites Human Rights

HUMAN RIGHTS breaches were cited by a

mother last month when her daughter was
sent home because of her leopard-print
hairstyle.
Lauren McDowell, 13, had her hair shaved
on one side and had it dyed brown and blonde.
But teachers at Forge Valley School in
Sheffield, South Yorkshire, didnt like it.
Laurens mother, Yvonne McDowell, 34,
said: said: As far as Im concerned its a
breach of my daughters human rights. She
had the hair cut about a week before she
went back to school. No one has the right
to tell someone what to do with their body.
It is her body.
McDowell added: She is my child and not
theirs. She didnt sign away her rights when
she started at school.
Mum also insisted that her daughter will
not be having her hair cut; and, said Lauren
was bullied at school and it has taken her
a while to build up her confidence. She is
devastated. She loves school. She is not a
bad pupil. She works hard. What has her
hair got to do with her education? They are
discriminating against her because of how she
looks. She has the right to express herself in
whatever way she wants as long as she is in
school uniform.
Headteacher Dale Barrowclough said the
school has a very clear uniform policy.
He said: This policy is communicated to
parent frequently and is available to download
from our website. The policy clearly states
that extreme haircuts, including hair colour
are not allowed.

A LADY named Lisa put some good imagination, and money, to work last month when she
discovered her husband had been cheating
on her.
And, rather than follow a familiar trodden path, for example exposing the cheat
in person, by text, telephone or even a FAX,
assuming she still had one . . . Lisa decided
to post her message on a huge roadside advertisement so that not only her hubby would
see it, but thousands of commuters on a busy
morning on their way to work.
The sign read: To my cheating husband
Paul. You deserve each other. When you get
home I wont be there. Enjoy your drive to
work! Lisa.
According to Mark Catterall, the man who
sold Lisa the ad space, Lisa paid hundreds
of pounds for the huge 15ft x 10ft sign which
appeared on Sheffield Parkway, a major
commuter route into the South Yorkshire city
in England.
He added: It is the most recognized billboard location in the city, so I wouldnt like
to be the partner scorned by this.
Lisa discovered her husbands cheating
ways a while ago and planned out her revenge
over a couple of weeks. Now the whole city
of Sheffield knows Pauls a cheater and that
Lisa has aspirations of getting an advertising
degree.

A PRANK saw one lads mates stuff a bag

Unfortunately the regulations quite clearly
stated in the flying regulations, allow for no
leniency for jokes by flight passengers in this
day and age.
Not only were all 14 men kicked off the
plane, after diverting to Portugal, but they
have been banned from flying for life.
One of the group of 14 was Lee Farrell,
30, of Glasgow. Farrells mother Debbie said
that The way the airline treated those boys is

The joke backfired when cabin crew on

6,500 over 16s an amazing 51 percent admit

to not being busy between the sheets in the
last four weeks.
Even more surprising approximately a
third of 25-34 year-olds are claim to be
celibate as figures show some people let
weeks pass without a hint of intimacy. And a
shocking number of young men and women
abstain from sex completely, opting for a life
of celibacy.
The take it or leave it attitude appears
to be fuelled by the effects of children in the
family, this being the main reason why adults
sex lives dry up. A huge 46 per cent of parents
questioned as part of the survey admitting
they had not had sex in the past month.
The poll also revealed that 68 per cent of
adults do not rank physical attraction and the
quality of their sex lives among the top three
things that make their relationship strong.
Chris Sherwood, chief executive of marriage counselling service Relate which commissioned the report said: Our findings will
reassure people who feel that they are missing
out because they are not having the sort of
sex lives portrayed in Fifty Shades of Grey.
The report concludes: While sex can play
an important part in an intimate relationship
and can be the match that lights the fire,
whatever the age, sex is rarely the fuel that
keeps the fire going.

Pupil Recorded Teachers During

Extra-Curricular Activity . . .

YOUTUBE has been a revolution in video on

the internet, but for two teachers last month,
it became a revelation. The pair were caught
in what clearly sounded like a sexual liaison
after a video clip of sex noises appearing to
come from Headmaster Daniels office was
posted on YouTube by a pupil.
The affair was exposed when Head teacher
Graham Daniels and his deputy Bethan
Thomas were recorded from the other side
of the headteachers locked door in the 34
second clip, which later went viral.
Daniels, 57 and Thomas both resigned
from Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryntawe in
Swansea but insisted they were still good
teachers with plenty to offer.
At an Education Workforce Council hearing
in Cardiff, Daniels and Thomas admitted having sex sessions on school premises between
May 2013 and April 2014.
The couple, who were married to other
people at the time, said they both deeply
regretted their actions and were completely
ashamed.
However, the EWC ruled the pairs reckless and selfish behaviour had damaged the
reputation of the teaching profession and their
former school.
Panel chairwoman Jacquie Turnbull made
a prohibition order on both registrants after
saying their sex sessions over 11 months
in school were not just an isolated incident.
Their teachers union representative Tim
Glover argued they should still be allowed to
teach and were excellent teachers.
The two teachers can apply to go back
on the teaching register in three years time.

Proposed Travelator To
Replace Londons Tube
ONLY A SEASONED London commuter could
truly express the true frustration of taking the
Circle line to work every day, and standing on
the platform watching District line train after

District line train whistle by wondering if their

service to Paddington will show up at the
very least, soon.
This is just one of the many frustrations
of the 153-year-old system that has served
Britains capital city for over 150 years.
But, recently, a London architects NBBJ
has released a proposal to destroy the whole
thing, or at least the Circle Line, and replace
it with an airport-style travelator.
The companys futuristic design proposes
that Tube trains be replaced by three side-byside electronic walkways which would each
slow down when they approached a station.
Commuters would alight the travelator at
3mph before speeding up to 6mph in the
slowest lane, 12mph in a middle lane and
15mph in the top speed lane.
Currently, the Circle Line, which runs for 17
miles, is more prone to delays than any other
line on the Underground.
The proposal from the architects was a
response to a challenge from thinktank New
London Architecture which called for ideas to
improve daily life in the capital, according to
the Evening Standard.
NBBJ, who have previously claimed to
have designed a skyscraper which casts no
shadow, estimate that the new Circle Line
could allow 55,000 people to use the line at
any one time and that it would take just 56
minutes, instead of the current 60 to make a
complete loop.
Other designs suggested for a revamp of
the capitals transport system include the
London Underline an underground cycle network and Bounceway the worlds longest
urban trampoline which was inexplicably
dismissed by planners.

But Carol Riala said she was left gobsmacked when the back window of her
42,000 Audi A5 was completely shattered
after it was parked in a city centre hotel.
Riala, 42, said: I stood and watched the
car taken into this bling robot-style service and
heard a scraping sound and actually joked with
my friend that it was my car. I never thought
in a million years it would be.
But, when the car was brought back up
the next day Riala realised the sound was her
car being damaged. The back of the car was
completely crumpled and smashed up. She
said: I just couldnt believe it.
Riala added: The whole back window
was completely put through. The car was not
drivable. It was awful.
The mum-of-three from Preston said she
immediately complained to the hotel and
demanded insurance details.
She said she was even forced to pay the
13 car parking fee. And, the company have
now refused liability for the damage because
they claim the boot was left open.
A spokeswoman for Staycity said: This
was an unfortunate occurrence, but following
an investigation by our insurers we have been
advised that Staycity is not liable for any claim
for damages because the car boot was not
securely closed.

Breakfast at Tiffanys
ONE OF my favourite films of all time drew me
to the superb Audrey Hepburn exhibition Portraits of an Icon at the National Portrait Gallery
last month. This photographic journey through
Hepburns life starting as a chorus girl in the
West End right through to her philanthropic
work for the United Nations is quite stunning.
It seems an entirely appropriate venue for one
of the most recognizable head and shoulders
of the 20th Century. The exhibition runs until
October 20 so dont hang around for this one.
Another art gallery drew my attention for all
the wrong reasons walking past the gallery at
the foot of the OXO Tower on Londons Southbank, I was stunned to see what looked like
an exhibition of AK47 assault rifles. There was
something compulsive about it and on entering
the studio I found a great story which needs
to be told. The artist, known simply as McCrow has displayed guns and ammunition in
provocative, ironic and counter-intuitive ways
to bring attention to the terrible proliferation of
weaponry around the world. There is a colourful rifle, appealing to children with toy labels
on it and another in gold, taking a side-swipe
at the links of vast wealth to gun violence. The
art itself is impressive, there is a skull made
of ammunition shell cases but the message
is a powerful one. McCrow believes there are
simply too many guns in the world (with an
estimated 75,000,000 AK47s alone, he has a
fair point) and he has established a charity One
Less Gun with the aim of destroying a million
guns around the world. Take a look at www.

Still El Vino

Back in the newspaper glory days of Fleet

Street, a favourite haunt for journalists was
El Vino, a fantastic old wine bar which has
barely changed since it was opened by the
Bower family in 1879. Now the bar is in the
news itself with the revelation that the original

founding family has sold it to the Davys wine

bar chain. There is a promise to keep the
name and it seems unlikely that too much will
change located opposite the Royal Courts of
Justice and still a popular haunt for barristers,
this London institution, which featured in the
Rumpole of the Bailey books will no doubt
continue a tradition of stocking the best range
of wines in town.

Once again the most famous clock in the

shock, horror, it was six seconds out. BBC
Radio 4 uses Big Bens chimes live each day

from the pendulum and solve the problem.

Frequented by everyone from Laurence Olivier
to Elton John this great dining venue now looks
very smart indeed with comfortable new seating, a central bar and stunning new artwork
including pieces by Damien Hirst and Maggie
Hambling. There is a new menu to boot with
some old favourites like Shepherds Pie and
also some new European-inspired lighter bites.
And book your table right now for your
chance to appear on TV! Yes, a camera
crew has been seen in the restaurant, apparently filming for a forthcoming documentary
highlighting the enduring appeal of the Ivy to
the glitterati.

True Brits

Amid darker tales of London life, it is

always pleasing to hear stories of that better side of human nature in Britains capital
city. City barrister Claire Miller was run over
by a black taxi cab when she popped out for
lunch recently. In what looked like a horrifying
accident with Ms Miller stuck underneath the
wheels, quick-thinking office workers rallied
around and lifted the vehicle completely
off her. Amazingly she suffered only minor
injuries and was discharged from hospital the
same day. Speaking afterwards a grateful Ms
Miller said There are just no words to thank
these people. It just proved that Londoners
are some of the greatest people on earth.

Notting Hill

This affluent suburb of West London

comes to life every August Bank Holiday
weekend for the Carnival which is hailed as
Europes largest street parade. When you
wander the well-heeled, gentrified streets
on the western side of Hyde Park you might
wonder why Notting Hill? Well, the answer
lies in this area being a hub for immigrants
to London in the 1950s from the Caribbean
and South America. Then there was the hippy
culture of the 60s. The richly diverse, exotic
culture which the immigrants brought with
them and the flamboyance of the decade
of free love combined to produce the first
carnivals which then started to become more
organised in the 1970s.
Over the years, the carnival has attracted
notoriety on occasion with serious criminal activity blighting the fun but these days the event
is well-policed with intelligence-led swoops
on known criminals taking place beforehand
to minimise any chance of trouble.
But unfortunately, all the preparation in the
world does not deal with that one potential
spoiler good old British weather! And so it
was this year in a summer noted by sweeping bands of Atlantic low pressure drenching
the entire country, August 31 saw half the
months usual rainfall in just one day. The
crowds were still there but probably a little
thinner than usual and certainly the vendor
of Union Jack ponchos was doing a roaring
trade! Spiky pop princess Lily Allen was
spotted without her husband dancing alone
and enjoying the carnival, fag in hand. Classy.

THE HIGHLYpraised pilot of the

of McCarran Airport in Las Vegas,
has said hell retire.
Chris Henkey safely aborted the

with halting the burning airplane.
Henkey, 63, was captain of the plane
that caught fire September 8 as it accelerated for takeoff. The 157 passengers
and 13 crew on the Boeing 777 escaped
without serious injury using evacuation
slides.
Henkey told the BBC the only flight
left on his schedule was a trip to Barbados. He was planning on staying in
Barbados and vacation with his daughter.
But he now says its unlikely hell make
that flight because hes finished flying.
Henkey added that hed never experienced such a dramatic emergency in
his 42-year career. He deflected praise,
saying the entire crew helped ensure
passengers safety.
DISASSEMBLING
Crash investigators were disassembling the General Electric engine that
caught fire, Meanwhile, authorities were

poring over paperwork and maintenance

records for clues about whether the firstever failure of the workhorse jet engine
was a one-of-a-kind event or a sign of a
broader problem.
Experts said that early signs showed
evidence of a catastrophic and uncontained failure while the engine was under
the highest pressure with the aircraft
accelerating for takeoff.
No GE90 engine ever experienced an
uncontained failure before, GE spokeswoman Deborah Case said.
British Airways and the British Civil
Aviation Authority were assisting the
probe.
The engine was to be taken to a GE
plant in Evendale.

Defense Secretary
Says Further Drone
Attacks Possible

BRITAINS defense secretary says

further drone attacks against suspected
jihadis in Syria are possible in the coming
weeks if plots against Britain are being
planned.
Michael Fallon told BBC Radio last
month that the government would not
hesitate to use drones to prevent attacks
against Britain from coming to fruition.
Fallon spoke one day after Prime
Minister David Cameron revealed in
Parliament that a missile fired from a
Royal Air Force drone had been used
in August against three jihadis in Syria.
Two Britons were among the dead in the
attack on a vehicle in Raqqa.
The defense secretary says there are
other terrorists plotting against Britain
from the Islamic State group stronghold
inside Syria. He did not specify how many
jihadis are believed to be actively plotting
against Britain.

Corbyn Seeks To Bring New Tone To Parliament

RR By Gregory Katz

Corbyn stands silent for national anthem at Battle of Britain service.

over the past three decades a strategy
that many credit for the partys three
straight election victories under Tony
Blair from 1997.
As well as presenting a change in
style, Corbyn is staunchly rejecting the
governments austerity prescription for
the British economy, which he slams as
unfair and counterproductive.
DECLINED
His first few days as leader have not
been smooth, most notably on September 15 when he declined to sing the
national anthem God Save the Queen
at a memorial event honouring World
War II fighter pilots. In the past, Corbyn
has spoken of his desire to turn Britain
into a republic.
Corbyns insistence that he stood in
respectful silence didnt cut it with a
large swathe of Britains tabloid newspapers which accused him of insulting
89-year-old Queen Elizabeth.
Corbyn sowed confusion the following
day when he refused to say explicitly during a Sky TV interview that he would sing
the anthem at future events, saying only

UK Agency Against Cybercrime

Targeted In Online Attack
BRITAINS National Crime Agency says its
website has been targeted in an apparent
cyberattack.
The agency, which is Britains national
body against organized crime and cybercrime, said last month that the attack aimed
to make the website inaccessible to visitors.
It said it did not result in a security breach,
and did not affect its operational capability.

It said the attack is at worst a temporary

inconvenience to users of our website.
The attack came days after the body
announced six teenagers were arrested on
suspicion of launching cyberattacks using
Lizard Stresser, a tool made by a group
that previously targeted Sony PlayStation
and Xbox gaming services. All six suspects,
aged 15 to 18, were released on bail.

that he would participate fully.

DOUSE
A party spokesman sought to douse
that fire, saying that Corbyn had meant to
say he would sing the anthem in future.
Corbyn also doesnt dress like most
male politicians: He wore dark slacks
and a tan sports coat and tie for PMQs,
eschewing the blue business suit and
brightly colored tie that have become
the unofficial dress code for many British
politicians gearing up for TV.
Cameron congratulated Corbyn on
winning his partys leadership contest
and said he would be delighted if their
weekly encounter in the House of Commons became a more serious forum for
posing and answering questions.
But old habits die hard: A question
posed by a member of the Scottish National Party quickly turned into a familiar
mudslinging match.
And talk turned, perhaps inevitably,
to less weighty matters when Cameron,
in response to questioning about a tiger,
said that a rhino in a wildlife park in his
constituency had been named after his
daughter Nancy.

Scottish Leader
Wont Rule Out 2nd
Independence Vote
ONE YEAR after
Scottish voters chose
not to break away
from Britain, Scotlands leader said
last month she could
not rule out another
independence referendum, and warned Nicola Sturgeon
Prime Minister David Cameron he was
living on borrowed time to convince
Scots to stay.
In a speech in Edinburgh, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that her proindependence Scottish Nationalist Party
respected the electorates 55- to-45 percent
vote against separation.
She said it would be wrong to propose
another referendum without a fundamental
change of circumstances.
But she said that if Britain decided to
leave the European Union in a referendum due by 2017, demand for a second
independence referendum could well be
unstoppable.
The SNP wants to remain inside the
28-nation EU, and polls suggest most
Scottish voters do, too.
Sturgeon also accused Camerons Conservative government of failing to deliver
on the vow it made on more powers for
our parliament.

A TOP OFFICIAL in Britains Labour

Party has apologised for saying more
than a decade ago
that Irish Republican Army bombings
and shootings helped
bring about peace in
Northern Ireland.
John McDonnells
statement of regret
is the latest clarifica- John McDonnell
tion by the partys new left-wing leaders
as they try to counter opponents claims
that their views are extreme.
McDonnell was appointed Labours
economy spokesman last month by new
party leader Jeremy Corbyn.
McDonnell said on BBC television
that he was sorry for saying in 2003 that
IRA bombs and bullets had brought the
British government to the negotiating
table and led to Northern Irelands 1998
peace deal.
WRONG
McDonnell said his words had been
wrong, and apologised from the bottom
of my heart for giving offense. But he
added that he had made the speech to
hold onto the peace process and persuade militants not to take up arms again.

THE GOVERNMENT of
Northern Ireland is in a deepening crisis and the first minister, Peter Robinson, has
stepped down along with most
of his Democratic Unionist
ministers. Heres a look at the
situation:
What Is The Status Of The
Catholic-Protestant Government?
The power-sharing government
continues to exist, barely. Robinson
left one minister in place and made
her temporary first minister. The
other parties, including Sinn Fein,
are still in the government, but its
executive functions have effectively
been halted. The parties have refused
to adjourn the government, so it is
still in place, but in a badly weakened
form.
Whats The Problem?
The Assembly has not been functioning properly for more than a year,
in part because of Sinn Feins refusal
to accept British-mandated welfare
cuts, but the current problem stems
from the murder last month of a former Irish Republican Army figure,
Kevin McGuigan.
Police in Northern Ireland say
IRA dissidents were involved in the
apparent revenge killing, infuriating
Protestant politicians who say they
cannot conduct routine business with
Sinn Fein the political party with
strong ties to the IRA if the IRA is
involved in murder and mayhem. The
IRA is supposed to have decommissioned its weapons and renounced
violence as its former leaders pursue
a political strategy through Sinn Fein.
What Happens Next?
British Prime Minister David
Cameron was expecting the parties
to resume negotiations in search of a
settlement. Leaders hoped a cooling
off period may help bring the government back from the brink, since
the establishment of the CatholicProtestant government was one of the
main accomplishments of the 1998
peace agreement.
The British government has the
ability to suspend the government
and resume direct control of Northern
Ireland but it has not done so yet.
Some believe that step is likely if no
progress is made very soon.
If The Government Collapses,
Is That The End Of The Landmark
1998 Peace Agreement?
The collapse would mark a serious setback but not the end of the
peace process. Earlier governments
also collapsed, leading to periods of
direct British rule from London, but
the power-sharing model has always
been re-established, even though the
process has sometimes taken years.
The implementation of the accord
remains a work in progress with serious flaws but few expect a return to
widespread violence.

Pay Growth
Picks Up At Last
In Britain As
Inflation Drops
To Zero
PAY GROWTH in Britain is finally picking up, with wages rising 2.9 percent in
the three months to July compared with
a year earlier the strongest increase
since February 2009.
The Office of National Statistics
reported last month that pay including
bonuses also rose by 2.9 percent. The
increase in pay has long been the missing piece in Britains economic recovery
and may pressure the Bank of England to
raise interest rates despite low inflation.
Markit chief economist Chris Williamson says the bank will remain
ultra-cautious about tightening policy,
but the upturn in pay growth certainly
suggests that a first rate hike by the end
of the year remains a distinct possibility.
The unemployment rate was 5.5
percent, unchanged from three months
earlier.
INFLATION
Meanwhile, Britains annual rate of
inflation dropped back to zero in August
from 0.1 percent in July amid sharp falls
in fuel prices.
The Office of National Statistic said
that the drop in consumer price inflation was due to a smaller rise in clothing
prices compared with a year ago. Rising
prices in soft drinks and furniture offset
the fall in part.
The low rate will encourage the
Bank of England to stay its course and
refrain from raising interest rates, as
inflation remains well below its target
of 2 percent.

Labour Party
Official Apologises
For Pro-IRA
Comments

Shakespeare Pub & Grille

ON HIS FIRST appearance at the

dispatch box, Jeremy Corbyn, the new
leader of Britains Labour Party, made
good on his promise to introduce a more
measured tone to the usually raucous
prime ministers question time.
Facing off against Conservative Prime
Minister David Cameron last month,
Corbyn asked a series of questions in
a quiet and calm manner that invited a
measured response, not a cutting oneline riposte.
It certainly made a change for one of
the most recognizable features of British
democracy, which has over the decades
been nothing more than a shouting match
between the prime minister and the
leader of the opposition.
Corbyns first PMQs as its often
referred to comes just four days after
his resounding victory in the Labour
Party leadership contest. Corbyns victory owed much to his support among
the partys membership and in the
unions not among the partys lawmakers themselves.
THEATRICAL
Many told me that they thought
PMQs was too theatrical, that Parliament
was out of touch and too theatrical and
they wanted things done differently,
Corbyn said in comments that precursed
his questions.
The questions also marked a distinct
change for the first time ever they had
been crowd-sourced from the public.
They included queries about the chronic
lack of affordable housing, the extortionate rent charged by some private
landlords and the quality of mental health
care offered Britons.
The 66-year-old left-winger represents a sharp break with Labours move

Bay City Rollers To Reunite

The Premier Scottish Festival on the West Coast

October 10 & 11, 2015
Ventura County Fairgrounds Ventura, California

ROLLERMANIA is to return
to the UK after the Bay City
Rollers announced a comeback
tour almost 40 years on from the
height of their fame.
Formed at the end of the
1960s, the then Scots boyband
enjoyed huge success at home
and abroad with their distinctive tartan outfits and upbeat
pop tunes like Bye Bye Baby and
Shang-a-Lang.
With a massive teen following, they sold more than 100
million records and have been

described as the One Direction

of their day.
Original members Les McKeown, Alan Longmuir and Stuart
Wood revealed they were getting
back together last month.
The original line-up also included Eric Faulkner and Derek
Longmuir, and the band said
Eric may join them in the next
few weeks.
The band rose to fame producing numerous top 10 hits, sell-out
tours and their own TV show
before splitting in 1978, with bit-

ter battles over money between

band members and managers
dragging on for decades.
A a press conference earlier
this week, Les said money has
been a factor in the reunion.
I think the three of us have
made (fans) dreams come true
and the fans are the reason that
were doing it that and the
money of course.
He joked: Well probably
never see a penny, itll be a repeat of the last 40 years.

Jackie Collins,
Novelist Of
The Rich And
Scandalous
JACKIE COLLINS, 77, who
dramatized the lives of the most
elite people and places, but they
were read by everyone, everywhere from airports to beaches
to, sometimes, under the covers
with a flashlight to hide from disapproving parents and partners.
Collins, whose books like Hollywood Wives were as brazenly
sexual as they were proudly
pulpy, sold hundreds of millions of
novels in dozens of countries, and
it led to a level of wealth, celebrity
and glamour that in many ways
surpassed her own characters,
and arguably matched that of her
older sister, Dynasty actress Joan
Collins.
Collins died of breast cancer in
Los Angeles, her publicist Melody

Korenbrot said.
Collins tales of sex, glamour,
power and more sex were a forerunner to the culture of Desperate
Housewives and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Her books
provided at first more than some
wanted to hear, but she became
the kind of author from whom
readers could never get enough.
She was born Jacqueline Jill
Collins in London in 1937, the

daughter of a theatrical agent

and a dance teacher. Her first
novel, The World is Full of Married Men, was a story of sex and
show business set in Swinging
London in the mid-1960s. By the
1980s, Collins had moved to Los
Angeles and turned out the 1983
novel she is still best known for,
Hollywood Wives, which has sold
more than 15 million copies. It
came at the same time that her
sister hit the height of her own
fame on Dynasty.
The books made Jackie Collins
a celebrity in her own right, and
she loved the part, looking, living
and behaving more like an actress
than an author. In many ways, her
own persona was her greatest
character.
Collins was married twice, the
second time to art gallery and
nightclub owner Oscar Lerman
in 1965. Lerman died in 1992. She
was then engaged to Los Angeles
businessman Frank Calcagnini,
who died in 1998.

Enter Corbyn Stage

Left, Followed By Chaos
WELL, THE unbelievable happened as I suggested last month (Corbyns Success Spoils
Labours Summer, UJ September 2015)
when Jeremy Corbyn was elected Leader of
the Labour Party.
There was nothing dubious about the
victory. Corbyn grabbed 60 percent of the
votes on the first ballot, leaving no room for
mistakes. He went off to celebrate with his
supporters at a nearby pub though he is a
tee-totaller. But fortified by a strong glass of
pop he weighed into a lusty rendition of The
Red Flag, possibly the last Labour leader
since Michael Foot to know all the words.
His overwhelming victory saw off the
leadership hopes of Andy Burnham, Yvette
Cooper and Liz Kendall, all centre of the road
politicians. Between them they represent the
views of all bar twenty of the partys 230
MPs, so the election caused chaos.
Within 24 hours, eleven senior Labour
MPs had resigned from his front-bench team,
alarmed at the extreme left-wing views he
has advocated in the past thirty years as a
backbench MP.
REBELLIOUS
The early resignations will not dismay
him, one suspects. He is a man well-used to
rebellions: he has voted against his own party
no less than 500 times in his thirty-odd years
as a back-bencher. Having set the example,
he is unlikely to inspire loyalty amongst his
own side. Whilst most of the moderate wing
of the party steadfastly refused to serve in
his shadow cabinet, the runner-up, Andy
Burnham, accepted the post of Shadow
Home Secretary.
Other than him, most of Corbyns chosen
supporters were what might be called oldfashioned socialists, of the sort that fell out
of favour a generation ago with Neil Kinnock,
Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and the electorate.
Corbyn is committed to anti-austerity
measures, convinced that the present governments policies are destined to make the
rich richer and the poor poorer. He wants to
bring the railways back into public ownership,
along with the utilities such as gas, water and
electricity. He is not keen on NATO or the
European Union and is a lifelong pacifist and
in favour of nuclear disarmament.
UNELECTABLE
It is hardly surprising that most of his parliamentary colleagues feel he is unelectable
and there is certain to be bitter in-fighting.

There is, however, something

strange happening
in our democracy,
a big sea-change
perhaps. Throughout
the twentieth century, we experienced
the stability of a twoparty system, one
lot giving way to the
other in a generally
balanced way as the century unfolded. In
point of fact, very little changed other than in
marginal seats where a minor voting swing
would change the government.
Most peoples votes never mattered a jot.
This led to a cynicism about politicians, that
they were all the same, all in it for themselves
so it didnt matter whom you voted for.
Then abruptly things changed. Surprises
had always been just around the corner in
by-elections where massive swings against
the government gave the Liberals astonishing, unpredictable victories. But that was just
a randomly exceptional by-election.
As the twenty-first century proceeded,
these massive swings became commonplace. We saw it in the dramatic rise of the
United Kingdom Independence Party, coming
from nowhere to first place in the European
Elections. These are significantly fought on
a representational voting basis, meaning that
every vote counts.
WINNING
In the 2010 General Election, it was Cleggmania that made the big story, with his Liberal
Democrats winning enough seats to form a
Coalition Government. Last Mays election
also produced a massive swing in Scotland
towards the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP)
winning dozens of seats and relegating the
Conservatives, Labour and the Lib Dems to
a pitiful rump of three MPs in all.
One of the things that the SNP played on
was that the Scottish Labour Party was in
cahoots with the Tories. Labour had sided
with the Tories on the independence referendum and supported the same austerity
measures of David Cameron and George
Osborne. This played quite well effectively
routing the Labour Party north of the border.
The accession of a fiery left-winger like
Corbyn who will never be mistaken for
a Tory may revivify the Labour Party in
Scotland. On the other hand it has to be

said that Corbyn himself appears to have no

views about Scotland, As the SNP prepares
for the Holyrood elections next year, Nicola
Sturgeon is hinting quite strongly that another
independence referendum could be on her
election manifesto. If Labour cannot mount
some kind of an opposition in Edinburgh, it
could be farewell to the Union.
Another farewell is also on the cards.
This time to the European Union for Corbyn
has frequently indicated he is not a fervent
Europhile, unlike his predecessors. Despite
his apparent euro-scepticism over the years,
he appointed Tony Benns son, Hilary, to the
post of shadow foreign secretary. Questioned
about the likelihood of Corbyn leading his
party to campaign for withdrawal from the
EU next year, Benn said Corbyn would support British membership of the EU under any
circumstances.
FOLLOW
There is yet another thread to follow after
his election and that is in the selection of
parliamentary candidates which are yet to be
made by constituencies. One thing is abundantly clear, that the majority of grassroots
workers in the Party are dyed-in-the-wool
left-wingers who will probably select their
convictions in their choice of candidate.
All in all, the political events of early
September 2015 may have an enormous
influence upon the course of history. Quite
naturally, the Conservative Government
would be delighted that Jeremy Corbyn had
been elected as Labour leader. His firebrand
politics probably ensure that his party will
be unelectable for another ten years. It may
well lead to a realignment of parties on the
left creating a stronger Liberal Democrat
Party and a weaker Labour Party.
What is undeniable is that Jeremy Corbyn
won a quarter of a million votes in the Labour
leadership election. He promised something
fresh and different. It defies belief to think
that he can actually win a General Election
but these are strange times. At the beginning
of Labours election struggle, you could have
got odds of 500-1 against Corbyn.
Pr o b ab ly t h e
same odds as you
can get today for
Labour winning in
2020.

Kenya Unveils Memorial To Those

Tortured During British Rule
THOUSANDS of Kenyans, on September 11, attended the inauguration of a monument that pays
tribute to the victims of torture and ill-treatment
during the emergency period of British rule in
the 1950s.
The Memorial, backed by Britain, was officially opened in a ceremony witnessed by many
veterans of the Mau Mau rebellion, which
hastened the end of colonial rule in the East
African country.
Several thousand now-elderly Kenyans say
they were beaten and sexually assaulted by officers acting for the British administration trying
to suppress the Mau Mau rebellion, when groups
of Kenyans attacked British officials and white
farmers who occupied fertile lands.

The British High Commission said in a statement that the memorial was built as part of an
out-of-court agreement reached between the
British government and some Mau Mau veterans
in 2013. The agreement, which included more
than 5,200 claimants, was worth nearly 20m.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

And When Its Time To
Go (Home!)
FOR MANY people there comes a time when
they think about returning to the UK. A few
months ago I wrote about this from the point
of view of your arrival in the UK, but this month
Im thinking about it from the point of view of
leaving your tax friends at the IRS.
I believe I have a few regular readers, and
they will know that the US tax system specializes in the unexpected! To think you can leave
the country, file and pay your final tax return
and that be the end of it, is way too hopeful!
There have been many stories in the press
over the past few years about increasing
numbers of US citizens giving up their citizenship. Certainly the provisions of FATCA, and
the amount of personal financial information
now being made available to governments
in the US and your country of residence or
where your accounts are situated, offends
many peoples idea of personal freedom, mine
included. US citizens living overseas then see
their US citizenship as a liability and if giving
it up will cure these issues, its a price worth
paying, particularly when it can also negatively
affect their families financial affairs.
Unsurprisingly, the US government doesnt
make this an easy option. If you give up
citizenship (or permanent residence if you
have had a green card for eight of the past
15 years), you could be treated as a covered
expatriate if you meet one of three tests
concerning your net worth ($2m or more),
your average net income tax over the past five
years or you cannot certify that you have met
all your US tax requirements for the previous
five years. Im sure you wont be amazed to
hear, this final requirement is the one that
brings many people into full compliance
before they think about leaving.

As a covered expatriate you continue to

be subject to US tax laws and requirements
for a further 10 years, so the benefits of
not being a US taxpayer are delayed for this
period. (As you can imagine, the legislation
makes it all much more complicated than this
Ive given you the two-sentence version!)
It makes some sense that the US government would not want to lose citizens too easily, but there are also requirements if you leave
as a visa-holder or permanent resident who
doesnt meet the eight out of 15 years test.
For these people, the IRS is much more
concerned about being paid any tax due
for your final US-based tax year. There is a
special form (no surprise there!), the 1040-C,
for Departing Aliens (who are clearly headed
back to Mars or Venus!). This form needs to
be completed prior to leaving and the IRS,
when satisfied, will issue an Annual Certificate
of Compliance as part of a US Departing Alien
Income Tax Statement. There are some people
who dont need to go through this procedure,
such as students, but in general anyone leaving after a US assignment should assume this
will apply to them.
And just so you dont overlook the obvious,
completing this form doesnt mean you dont
need to file a 1040 for the year. Oh no, this is
in addition, not an alternative!
So the IRS can get you coming into the
country with all sorts of rules that no-one tells
you about, and they can get you going out.
But were all still very pleased and grateful to
be here, right?!

Mary-Heather Styles qualified as a barrister

in London a long time ago, and is an Enrolled
Agent (tax specialist) here in the US. She is
looking to expand her business, and particularly, needs people to train in international tax.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received, in
addition to advice offered, at (602) 845-1420

AN ANARCHIC amusement park by street artist Banksy that mocked capitalism and consumer
culture has brought an economic boom to a faded seaside town.
Banksys Dismaland bemusement park transformed a derelict outdoor swimming pool in
Weston-Super-Mare into a macabre parody of a theme park, complete with a derelict castle,
a dead Cinderella and a Grim Reaper in a bumper car.
Local officials say the attraction, which closed September 20 after five weeks, drew more
than 150,000 people to the southwest England town of 75,000.
Tourism body Visit Somerset said the exhibition had brought 20m to a region that has
struggled since foreign vacations replaced local seaside holidays for many Britons.
Officials hope to use the shuttered site for future art and performance events.

ROY AND CATHY become close after she

moves into his flat above Roys Rolls. Roy
offers her his spare room to stay in after
it becomes clear that staying in her own
home is unsafe. Cathy is almost killed when
a mountain of rubbish falls on top of her in
her living room and she knows her hoarding
habit is out of control. Roy takes Cathy to a
museum where the two of them join an art
class and draw pictures of each other. While
theyre out of the house, Tyrone, Fiz and
Chesney tidy up Cathys home to reveal a
sofa, a carpet and a panic attack from Cathy
when she returns to see what theyve done.
Shes too scared to stay in the house on
her own as it brings too many memories of
how shes let things go since her husband
died. Roys flat is a safe haven for wounded
souls, and Cathy accepts his offer of moving
in, temporarily.
Now that Sally and Tim are engaged, shes
got big plans for her fianc. She wants him
to move up in the world, and not just climb
another rung on his window cleaning ladder. She wants the best for Tim but ends up
snogging ex-husband Kevin on the sofa in
the heat of the moment when Tims away in
Wales. Its Kevin who pushes Sally away, he
knows theres madness in the kiss. No-ones
told Tim yet but as this is soap, hes bound
to find out. When Sally tries on her wedding

EVEN THOUGH they are barely speaking, Mick,

Shirley and Tina decide to finally scatter their
Dads ashes at the seaside they used to visit
as kids. But theres a problem: When they open
the urn they find Stans ashes have been replaced with custard powder. Only one person
could have done that: Aunt Babe. They go to
the camper van where shes been living and
in their search find a mysterious photo album
which leads to the revelation that Aunt Babe
(with Queenie, Heathers Mum) was involved
in taking the babies of pregnant girls and
selling them, and a confrontation about what
happened when Mick was born. This leads to
Shirley and Mick reconciling and him calling
her Mum for the first time. And in a psychotic
turn of events, after they scatter Stans ashes,
despite everything, they bring homeless Aunt
Babe back to the Vic to live with them. Surely
trouble wont be far behind
And speaking of trouble, Kathy pops up
again, asking Phil for money to leave abusive
hubby Gavin and we get more info: Turns
out Phil has known shes been alive since Ben
went to prison for Heathers murder, and she
had faked her death for the insurance money,
a plot hatched by Gavin. Gavin catches wind
of her escape plan and tries to fly away with
her (hes a pilot). Phil confronts them at the
airport and helps Kathy get away. Hiding in the
Arches, she sees Ben (though he doesnt see
her). Suspicious Sharon snoops and walks in
on Kathy and the two throw down. Theres still
lots of bad Sharongate blood there. Kathy also
tells Phil shes not going anywhere regardless
of the costs but Gavins got other ideas and
snatches her away again
Elsewhere Max is on trial for the murder
of Lucy Beale (even though at least a dozen
people know it was Bobby wot done it). But
where is Bobby? Ian has vamoosed and
taken Bobby with him. In court, shark Marcus

of the jury by hinting that Abi might have done
it. Pregnant Lauren, who just returned to the

done with info Max gave him, even Lauren has

who comes into the house to find out what
Sallys up to and has to help her out of her
gown, just as daughter Sophie walks in to
find her divorced mam and dad trying to rip
Sallys dress off.
Carla returns from a trip overseas. She tells
everyone shes been to Madrid but she was in
Las Vegas getting rid of her cash in a casino
instead. Not only has she been gambling all
her own money but Underworlds accounts
are over 30,000 in the red. She tells the factory girls shes moving away and putting the
factory up for sale. But instead, old friend
Aidan Connor, a cousin of Michelles walks in
and takes over. Carla sells him half the factory
while battling her demons with gambling and
booze. Its the guilt of thinking shes killed two
people in the Victoria Court fire thats sending
Carla over the edge. Will Tracy confess that it
was she who started the fire?
Over at the Bistro theres a new chef in the
form of Tracys ex-husband Robert Preston.
He turned up for Deirdres funeral some
weeks ago and is now a regular on the Street
with his job in the Bistro and his feet firmly
under the table at No 1. Tracy moved Robert

LONDON MAYOR Boris Johnson has

admitted he decided London should not
host the start of the 2017 Tour de France
because it was not worth it.
The London mayor told the BBC he
could not justify spending 35m on a
one-off event. saying: I will not waste
cycling money on something that would
only deliver very brief benefits.
Transport for London (TfL) pulled
out a day before the contracts were due
to be signed.
Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the
French company which owns the race,
was told of TfLs decision earlier.
Johnson said: Im afraid I have got to
put my hands up here and say I took the
decision not to go forward with it.
Youve got to take some tough decisions in government and I think 35m quid
on a one-off event was just not worth it
for London.
He said the money could be spent on
long-term infrastructure to make cycling
in London safer.
TfL would have provided the funds
for holding the Tours opening stages.
In 2014 TfL paid 6m to host the finish
of the Tours third stage. London also
hosted the Grand Depart in 2007.

Honoring WWII Pilots
PRINCE HARRY marked his 31st birthday September 15 at a gathering of vintage

Harry watched as some 40 Spitfire, Hurricane and Bristol Blenheim bombers flew
in formation before dispersing to wartime

The 75th anniversary celebration was
attended by some of the surviving pilots,
who are now in their 90s.
About 544 personnel from Fighter Command died during the Battle of Britain in
1940 as Hitlers Luftwaffe was repelled.
Harry, wearing a beard he grew over
the summer, met with some of the veteran

Spitfire at an event last year but plans
for him to ride on one last month were

ering weather and sports, were published

online last month.
As befits a country renowned for its
gray, damp, drizzly climate, Scots also
contains multiple words for rain and mist.
Its a bit surprising that snow would
give rain a run for its money, said Susan
Rennie, lecturer in English and Scots
Language at Glasgow. Thats a nice
surprise.
Rennie said the wide range of weatherrelated terms shows how important it was
for people in Scotland for centuries a
largely agricultural country to distinguish quite subtle gradations of weather.
The Scots language which is sometimes considered a dialect of English
has been recognized as an integral
part of Scotlands distinctive culture and

heritage by Scotlands nationalist government. It is classed as one of Scotlands

three main languages, alongside English
and Gaelic.
The compilers of the thesaurus want
readers to send in their own words to add
to the list, and hope the book may encourage the return of some forgotten terms.
Some words are ripe for revival,
Rennie said.
What language would not be enriched
by snaw-ghaist an apparition seen in
the snow or snaw-breaker?
It sounds like its going to be a snow
plow, Rennie said. But in fact its a word
for a sheep that breaks a path through the
snow for its fellow sheep to follow.

State Department to the monthly Visa Bulletin,
more intending immigrants can file for the
final stage of their green card applications
sooner. There is a quota on green cards that
depend on the applicants country of birth
and the preference classification he or she
is immigrating through. Jobs that require
higher degrees of education and/or experience qualify intending employment based
immigrants to immigrate faster. The waiting
list caused by quotas makes some intending
immigrants have to wait 10+ years to file the
final stage of their green card application,
known as adjustment of status. During this
period of time, generally, applicants must
stay with their sponsoring employer lest they
start over with another employer.

He continued: I found myself banned

redesigned the Visa Bulletin which comes

out monthly. It now, not only indicates which
applicants turn has been reached such that
they can file for adjustment of status, but
allows intending immigrant in the queue to
file substantially before their turn is actually
reached which results in several benefits to
intending immigrants. One significant benefit is the ability of spouses to obtain work
permits. Another is enhanced job mobility
during this long process. Once adjustment
of status applications are pending for 180
days, the intending immigrant can port
his or her green card application to another
employer if the new job is in the same or
similar occupation.
Employers have mixed reviews of this new
measure because they might lose key workers sooner than they otherwise might have.
On the other hand, additional recruitable talent
will be on the market sooner.
October is the first month that intending
immigrants can accelerate the filing of their
adjustment of status applications.

UK Immigration At
Record High As Topic
Is Hotly Debated
BRITAIN GAINED almost 330,000 people through migration in the year to March
31, official figures showed last month. Its
the highest figure on record and a headache
for the Conservative government amid a
political storm about immigration.
The Office for National Statistics said
636,000 people arrived during the 12
months and 307,000 left. The net total
surpasses the previous high of 320,000 in
2005. Eight million of Britains 64 million
people were born outside the country.
Prime Minister David Cameron has long
promised to reduce net migration below
100,000. Critics say the goal is unachievable, since members of the 28 European
Union countries have the right to live in
other member states. Roughly half the net
migration from to the UK in the year came
from within the EU.
WAKE-UP CALL
Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said the figures should be a wake-up
call for the EU. He said the record flow of
people across Europe was not sustainable
and risks the future economic development
of other EU member states.
Although British media attention has
focused on the Calais migrants, the vast
majority of immigrants come to study or
work rather than as refugees. There were
25,771 asylum applications in the year to
March, up 10 percent from a year earlier.

New Law Bans

Smoking In Cars With
Children Present

STARTING October 1, a new law

takes effect making it illegal to smoke
in a car (or other vehicles) with anyone
under 18 present. The law is changing
to protect children and young people
from the dangers of secondhand
smoke.
Both the driver and the smoker
in the car could be fined as much as
$80. The law applies to every driver
in England and Wales, including those
aged 17 and those with a provisional
driving licence. The law does not apply
if the driver is 17-years-old and is on
their own in the car.
However police chiefs say they
will not be heavily enforcing the ban,
meaning officers will often let motorists off with a warning, exercising
education not prosecution.
According to the UK Department
of Health, every time a child breathes
in secondhand smoke, they breathe
in thousands of chemicals. This puts
them at risk of serious conditions
including meningitis, cancer, bronchitis, and pneumonia. It can also make
asthma worse.
The law applies to any private vehicle that is enclosed wholly or partly
by a roof. It still applies if people have
the windows or sunroof open, have
the air conditioning on, or if they sit in
the open doorway of the vehicle. The
law wont apply to a convertible car
with the roof completely down. The
rules also wont apply to boats, ships,
and aircraft, as they all have their
own rules. Work vehicles and public
transportation are also not affected, as
they already are covered by previous
smoke-free legislation.

UK Court Asked To Judge Whether Bridge Is A Sport

RR By Gregory Katz

IS BRIDGE a sport? A British judge has

been asked to resolve this weighty question
after Sport England ruled the popular card
game is not a sport.
The decision was being challenged in
Britains High Court last month by the
English Bridge Union, which complains
that the adverse ruling by Sport England
goes against the views of Britains Parliament and significant international sporting organizations.
It says Parliament has recognized mind
sports that promote mental skills and
contends that bridge has known health
benefits.
Sport England, a national body that
plays a key role distributing lottery funds,
has long taken the view that bridge and
other mental games, such as chess, are
not sports.
Its director, Phil Smith, said the agencys job is to promote physical fitness and
playing bridge wont help.
FITTER
Bridge is a fantastic pursuit, and we
think it probably gives pleasure to a lot
of people, but it certainly isnt getting the
nation any fitter, he said.
Bridge Union spokesman Peter Stockdale said the court case is not just about
the lottery money, although he concedes
some extra cash would help bridge attract
more aficionados.
We feel it clearly meets the definition
of a sport, he said, adding the Interna-

bridge.
There are many different sides to it: the
personal challenge and mental skill that it
requires. It takes years to become a very
good player, he said.
At Londons ACOL Bridge Club, where

the game is a welcome focus on many a

central role in her life but conceded it
may not be a sport.
Its a fantastic mental exercise. Ive

DAVID BECKHAM was back in Miami September 23 but this time as spokesperson
for Haig Club, a new single grain Scotch
whisky just launched by UK brand Diageo.
(While here Golden Boots held private

Of course, I was included on the guest list

place with such history, said the Leyton Lad
now 40. Diageo approached me about four
years ago, but I was still playing so thought
an alcoholic brand not the right venture. But
the House of Haig is 400 years old and the
legacy behind that British brand intrigued and
excited me, being a traditional sort of man.
Ive never been a big drinker but Diageo has
since educated me on the finer points of
Scotch. Ive been using blue nosing glasses
and learning first-hand from distillers about
Scotch and the aging process. The amount
of work that goes into producing Scotch was
interesting, with a lot of experts teaching me.
Haigs Club bottle differs deliberately from
other Scotch bottles by being blue, sleek and
square, more resembling a cologne bottle,
presumably to appeal to younger drinkers.
(Hmmmisnt the point of Scotch that it IS
old, not young?). So now Beckham enjoys
a wee dram, he said, both neat and on the
rocks. Yes, for the dosh Diageo are paying
him am sure more of it will be sliding down
his sexy throat.

New Australian Leader Doesnt Plan Seven Men Sentenced For Rape,
Constitutional Change
Abuse Of Children And Babies
RR By Rod McGuirk

AUSTRALIAS new Prime Minister

Malcolm Turnbull indicated last month
that he is in no hurry to sever the nations constitutional links to Britain by
appointing an Australian president as
head of state.
Turnbull led the Australian Republican Movement, an advocacy group, when
it failed at a 1999 referendum to convince
Australians to replace Queen Elizabeth
II as Australias head of state.
But six days after becoming prime
minister, Turnbull said he had no plans to
revisit the divisive constitutional issue.
While I am a republican, I have to say
to you that there are much more immediate issues facing me and the government
than the republic, and the key ones all
relate to economic growth, Turnbull

Governor General Peter Gosgrove,
the British monarchs representative
in Australia, swore in Turnbulls first
21-member Cabinet September 21.
The previous day Turnbull had announced a younger team of ministers
that included more women than the
19-member Cabinet of his predecessor,
Tony Abbott.
Today we are forming a government for the 21at century, a ministry
whose composition and focus reflect our
determination to ensure that Australia
seizes the opportunities of these, the
most exciting times in human history,
Turnbull told the swearing in ceremony.
Abbott is a staunch monarchist who
riled many conservatives by making
the Queens husband, Prince Philip, an
Australian knight on Australias national
day on January 26. Many thought an Australian citizen would have been a more
appropriate choice for the honor.

now be possible. Opinion polls suggest
that most Australians believe that they
should have an Australian head of state.
But Turnbull said there needed to be a
genuine popular movement for change.
My own view ... is that the next occasion for the republic referendum to
come up is going to be after the end of
the Queens reign, he said. I think that
will be the next watershed event, if you

A BRITISH court last month sentenced seven men to prison for

raping and sexually abusing babies
and young children and sharing the
abuse online through pictures and
live videos.
The men, who lived across Britain,
preyed on the families of children to
gain access to them. They were convicted of 29 child sex abuse offenses,
including multiple rape of a child
under 13, conspiracy to rape, sexual
assault, and making and showing

indecent images of children.

Handing down the sentences at
Bristol Crown Court, Judge Julian
Lambert said the men had engaged
in some of the most depraved and
grossly deviant behavior imaginable.
Your thoughts and deeds are
beyond human instinct and reason,
and are evil beyond rational understanding, Lambert said.
The men, aged 31 to 51, were
handed prison sentences of two to
24 years.

Chicken, Leek and

Mushroom Pie

Cuisine is when things

taste like themselves

Curnonsky

ALTHOUGH I have never minded cooking

things from scratch and not worry about
the time it all takes, in todays world, there
just isnt time to spend on preparing on a
lot of things for a recipe. Nowadays, things
are available already prepared, that has
really good flavour also. So I will often use
a cooked chicken from Costco, or Publix
etc, and never bother to make puff pastry
from scratch any more when it is so easily
available in the supermarket freezer. I used
to make it with my Mum, but we had to
plan way ahead to make it as it required
repeated dotting with butter, folding over,
resting, roll out, add more butter, folding
etc. Laborious, but was worth it.
So although it is still hot here in Florida
it is officially Autumn, and my thoughts
begin to go to casseroles and pies, and this
months recipe allows for the traditional but
with less effort.
I never used to like Leeks, but in later
years love it in recipes, it is of course the
national symbol of Wales and there is still
the custom of wearing one on St Davids
Day, March 1 I wonder how smelly they
get after a while!!! The tradition is thought
to go back to the seventh century, when
during a battle with the Saxons. The Welsh
troops wore them in their helmets to distinguish them from the enemy.
Mushrooms are also a popular ingredient, and there is such a wealth of varieties
available nowadays some very odd
looking but delicious. When I was a child
in Cambridge area, we were stationed at
RAF Longstanton, and I would go to the
airfield and pick mushrooms I wouldnt
dare nowadays, couldnt possibly deter-

2 Tbsp butter
2 large leeks, washed trimmed and
sliced
2 Tbsp flour, and extra for dusting
1 cup milk
1 cup hot chicken stock
1 Tsp of Dijon mustard
1 Tbsp chopped fresh tarragon
(if using dry, use less)
1/2 lb chopped mushrooms (I like to
use the baby bellas for more flavour)
1 lb cooked chicken sliced up
3 Tbsp grated cheddar cheese
Store bought Puff pastry
1 beaten egg
Preheat oven to 375F. Melt the butter in
a pan, add the leeks and gently fry over a
low heat about 10 minutes. Mix the flour
with a little of the milk in a small bowl to
make a smooth paste. When the leeks are
soft, turn up the heat, add the flour paste,
and slowly add the remaining milk and
stock, bring to the boil stirring until the
sauce is thickened and smooth.
Add the mustard and tarragon. Stir in
the mushrooms and simmer 2-3- minutes.
Season and add the cooked chicken.
Remove pan from the heat and add the
cheese. Pour the mixture into 3-4 cup
size pie dish and allow to cool. On a
lightly floured work surface, roll out the
pastry until it is slightly larger than the
dish. Lay the pastry over the chicken mix,
and crimp around the edges. Brush the
top of the pastry with the beaten egg, cut
a small hole in the centre of the pie (or if
you have one can use a pie raiser in the
centre before adding pastry) Bake in oven
for about 30-40 minutes or until the pastry
is crisp and golden. 4-6- servings

Sepp Blatter Tells FIFA Staff

He Has Done Nothing Illegal
SEPP BLATTER told his staff he has done
nothing illegal or improper and has no
immediate plans to step down, the FIFA
presidents legal team said September 28.
Blatter was back at FIFA headquarters
three days after being interrogated by
Swiss investigators at the scandal-battered
governing bodys headquarters.
Blatter is expected to hand over power
in February when an emergency election
is held, triggered by the presidents resignation statement four days after being reelected for a fifth, four-year term in May.
But the 79-year-old Blatter does not appear to be planning any sudden exit despite
being the subject of a criminal investigation over his management of world soccer.
COOPERATING
President Blatter spoke to FIFA staff
and informed the staff that he was cooperating with the authorities, reiterated that he
had done nothing illegal or improper and
stated that he would remain as president of
FIFA, Blatters attorney, Richard Cullen,
said in a statement.
Blatter was questioned by Swiss investigators on just three days earlier about why
FIFA paid two-million Swiss francs (about
$2m) to UEFA President Michel Platini
in 2011 for work supposedly carried out
at least nine years earlier. Blatter denied
wrongdoing and Platini, who is also a
FIFA vice president, was only questioned
as a witness.
Platini said: The income has all been
fully declared by me to the authorities, in
accordance with Swiss law.
WARNER BANNED
Meanwhile, last month, FIFA banned
former vice president Jack Warner for life
over misconduct following an investigation into the bidding contest for the 2018
and 2022 World Cups.
The decision September 29 by FIFAs
ethics committee comes as Warner fights
extradition from Trinidad on US charges
of racketeering, wire fraud and money

laundering.
After being implicated in an earlier
bribery scandal, Warner quit FIFA in 2011.
The governing body said at the time that
the presumption of innocence is maintained.
But in last months ruling, FIFA said
Warner committed many and various acts
of misconduct continuously and repeatedly
during his time as an official in different
high-ranking and influential positions at
FIFA and CONCACAF.
FIFA said Warner was involved in the
offer, acceptance, and receipt of undisclosed and illegal payments.
PRESIDENCY
Prince Ali bin al-Hussein gave a strong
indication last month that he would be
standing for the FIFA presidency again.
If the election is done correctly, cleanly
and properly, I believe I can win, the
prince said at the SoccerEx conference.
The Jordanian surprisingly denied Sepp
Blatter a majority in the first round of voting in May but stepped aside before the
second round.
The deadline for Prince Ali and other
candidates to gain the five required nominations from federations to stand in the
February election is October 26.

UEFA Explores Creating Third Euro Club Competition

RR By Rob Harris

EUROPEAN football leaders have discussed the possibility of creating a third

club competition.
At a meeting of the 54 UEFA members last month, they explored the
merits of a new competition for teams
that fail to advance from the qualifying rounds for the second-tier Europa
League.
The discussions are at an early phase,
and any changes to the club competition structure in Europe would not be
introduced until at least 2018, when the
current round of TV rights deals expire.
Such a competition would appear
more attractive to smaller clubs rather
than English Premier League clubs like
West Ham and Southampton, who failed

to reach the Europa League group stage

this season.
It would chime with UEFA President Michel Platinis strategy of giving
smaller nations greater access to competitions, whether by expanding the
European Championship to 24 teams or
spreading hosting of Euro 2020 across
the continent.
The competition could be completed
by the end of the calendar year, rather
than going through to the conclusion of
the European season like the Champions League and Europa League.
The Europa League started in 2009
as a replacement for the UEFA Cup.
A third competition, the UEFA Cup
Winners Cup, merged with the UEFA
Cup in 1999.

ENGLAND captain Eoin Morgan retired

hurt with a concussion last month in the
deciding one-day international against
Australia after suffering a nasty blow to
the helmet.
Morgan was facing his sixth ball of
the innings when he turned his head to a
90mph bouncer from Mitchell Starc which
hit the side of his helmet.
The 29-year-old Morgan remained on
his feet for a couple of minutes before
retreating to the turf when Englands
medical team arrived in the middle.
The England team Twitter account
later tweeted: Eoin Morgan is being
treated for concussion and will take no
further part in the game. James Taylor
will captain in his absence.
Morgan retired with England at 22-3
after winning the toss and choosing to bat.
Starc played in the Australian match
last year when Phillip Hughes died after
being hit by a bouncer.

QATARI MONEY is coming to English

football for the first time at the unlikeliest of clubs.
The recipient is not a globally-recognized power but a tiny team playing seven
divisions below the Premier League.
What Sheffield FC lacks in glamour it
makes up for in status. From the powerhouses of Barcelona and Manchester
United to amateur outfits worldwide,
every football team emanates from this
club in northern Englands steel city.
When Sheffield FC started playing
1857, there was no other team in the
world.
Now, eager to be associated with the
pioneers of football, 100,000 is headed
to Sheffield FC from the country hosting
the Middle Easts first World Cup, The
Associated Press has learned.
The enduring controversy surrounding the awarding of the 2022 tournament
means the investment from the World
Cup organizers could be interpreted as
Sheffield FC being used by a country in
need of a positive promotional platform.
But Sheffield FC said it only turned to
Qatar after feeling snubbed after making
direct approaches to the English Football
Association and Premier League in the
search for cash to fund a return to the
site of its original home. Applications for
grants have to go through the Football
Foundation.

There is now a Royal Marine

Association Branch formed
in the US.

Tennis; South African Stops

Murray
ANDY MURRAY was back at Flushing
Meadows, New York, for the US Open,
August 31-September 13, the scene of his
very first Grand Slam success back in 2013.
Some hard serving by Kevin Anderson, had
the Scot on the back foot at times, and the
six-foot-eight 15th seeded South African, put
Murray out in the fourth round with a 7-6 (75) 6-3, 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-0) scoreline. Earlier,
the third seeded Murray, went past Nick
Kyrgios (Aus) Adrian Mannarino (Fr) and
Thomaz Bellucci of Italy. British number two
Alijaz Bedene beat Ernests Gulbis in the first
round after the Latvian retired injured, but lost
to the American, Donald Young, in the next
round. James Ward, has never got past the
first round in many attempts, and this year,
Thomaz Bellucci gave him his exit papers.
Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer in the
singles final by four sets, giving the Serb his
tenth Grand Slam title.
Jamie Murray and partner John Peers
of Australia, reached the finals of the mens
doubles facing the French pair, Pierre
Hugues-Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, who
had beaten Brit, Dom Inglot and his Swedish
partner, Robert Lindsedt in the semi-finals.
Murray was chasing his second Grand Slam
title, having won the Wimbledon mixed
doubles with Jelena Dokovic in 2007. The
French duo prevailed 6-4, 6-4, over the eighth
seeded Murray and Peers.

Johanna Konta Shines Through

On the ladies side, Britains Johanna

Konta, (ranked 97th in the world) produced
some of the best tennis of her career when
she reached the last sixteen. Konta beat
wildcard Louisa Chirico of the US, before
a feisty tussle with this years Wimbledon
singles finalist, Garbine Muguruza of Spain.
Konta beat the ninth seed in three hours and
23 minutes, the longest womens match on
record at Flushing Meadows with a score of
7-6, (7-4) 6-7, (4-7) 6-2. She then went on to
beat the 18th seeded player, Andrea Petkovic
of Germany, 7-6 (7-2) 6-3. In the last sixteen,
fourth round, she faced two time Wimbledon
champion and fourth seed and the much
more experienced Petra Kvitova. She never
panicked against her Czech opponent, but
Kvitova came through 7-5, 6-3. Britain last
had a competitor in the US quarter-finals back
in 1984, when Jo Durie was in her prime.
For the more well-known Heather Watson
and Laura Robson, however, both made
first round exits.
Biggest upset of the tournament was
Serena Williams defeat in the semi-finals
against the unseeded Italian, Roberta Vinci.
The All-Italian final witnessed Flavia Pennetta beat Vinci 7-6 (7-4) 6-2, and then
announce this would be her final year in
tennis with retirement on the horizon for the
33-year-old.

Britain Reach Davis Cup Final

The Davis Cup semi-final at Glasgow, September 18-20, witnessed a huge celebration
as Andy and Jamie Murray pushed Britain
to a first Davis Cup final since 1978, although
its 1936 since a British victory. Against
Australia, the first day saw Andy Murray
beat Thanius Kokkinakis in three sets, while
Dan Evans, who been brought in over the out
of form James Ward, lost a tight four-setter
to Bernard Tomic. The second day doubles
pitched Andy and brother Jamie against Sam
Groth and Lleyton Hewitt that went the whole
five sets with the Murrays winning 4-6, 6-3,
6-4, 6-7 (6-8) 6-4. Andy Murray pushed
Britain over the top with a 7-5, 6-3, and 6-3
over Bernard Tomic. Dan Evans lost to Kokkinakis with Britain prevailing 3-2. Hes quite
good isnt he, quipped non-playing captain
Leon Smith, on Andy Murrays spectacular
performance. The Davis Cup final against
Belgium is scheduled November 27-29.

the Swalec Stadium saw England win a close

which went down to the fifth and final game.

the County Championship they won last
year with an innings and 126 runs win over
Somerset at Headingley. Somerset 110 and
155. Yorkshire 391 The Tykes then beat
Hampshire by five wickets, which led to
Hampshire being relegate alongside Worcestershire Surrey assured themselves of

and 258-4 at close.
The Royal London One-Day Cup final at
Lords, September 19, witnessed Gloucestershire beat Surrey by six runs. Gloucs 220 all
out at 47-4 overs. Surrey 214 at close. Lords
has been a particular favourite location for
Gloucestershire, having lost only one final
out of ten in recent years.

Golf: Lee Slattery Puts It About

Lancashires Lee Slattery put a few birdies away during the final round of the Russian
Open in Moscow, and claimed his second
European title with a one stroke victory over
the field. Slattery carded a 15 under 269, and
went in to the final round with a two stroke
lead. Estanislao Goya of the Argentine was
runner-up with Englands David Horsey three
strokes back in third. Slattery was in the mix
a week later at the Dutch Open at Zandvoort.
A multitude of scores in the sixties proved
the course needs revamping. Paul Lawrie
fired off a 9 under par 61, in the first round.
Slattery hit a 7 under 63 in the second, and
Matthew Patrick knocked off a10 under
par 60. Belgiums Thomas Pieters took the
honours with a 19 under 261. Slattery shared
second place, one stroke distant Great
Britain & Ireland beat the United States in
the Walker Cup at Royal Lytham & St Annes,
September 12, by a score of 17 and a half,
to nine and a half.

Boxing

Floyd Mayweather proved hes practically

unhittable when he took a unanimous decision over Andre Berto (34-4). It all about
that IQ, said the champion, who pushed
his unbeaten record to 49-0 in Las Vegas,
September 12. On the under-card was British
super-middleweight George Groves, who has
lost two world champion bout to fellow Brit
Carl Froch. Fortune did not shine on Groves
(21-3) however, and he lost a split decision
to Badou Jack from Sweden, who retained
his WBC super-middleweight crown British
Olympic heavyweight gold medalist Anthony
Joshua, destroyed Scotlands Gary Cornish
in 97 seconds at the 02 Arena, winning his
14th consecutive pro-fight and collecting
the Commonwealth heavyweight title in the
meantime.

Rugby, Hockey, Rowing

And Pharoah

The Rugby League Ladbrokes Challenge

Cup at Wembley, last weekend in August,
drew a crowd of 80,000, who watched Hull

Kingston Rovers swallow Leeds Rhinos

whole, winning 50-0 Englands womens
hockey team became European Champions
after beating Germany 2-1 in the semi-final
and the reigning champions Netherlands
2-0 in the final. The series hosted in London,
witnessed England mens side miss the
bronze medal after a 4-2 reversal by Ireland The World Rowing Championships at
Aiguebelette, France, August 30-September 6
was used as a qualifying competition for next
years Brazilian Olympics. Britain topped the
medal table with five gold, nine silver and a
bronze. Helen Glover and Heather Stannin
retained their gold medal in the womens
pairs, while there was gold for the mens
eights, mens coxed pairs, the mens lightweight pairs and the para- mixed fours The
first triple crown winner in 37 years American
Pharoah, was beaten by three quarters of
a length in the 146th running of the Travers
Stakes at Sarasota Springs, New York, last
Sunday in August. 16-1 shot, Keen Ice, beat
him on the run in. Pharoah the 1-5f, had beat
Keen Ice easily at the Haskell Invitational at
Ocean Port, NJ, early July 10 ran.

Formula One And Cycling

Lewis Hamilton started in pole position at

the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, September
6, and drove himself to his seventh victory
of the year establishing a good points lead
in the drivers championship. Sebastian
Vettel was second and Felipe Massa third.
At the Singapore Grand Prix, September 20,
Ferraris Sebastian Vettel dominate from the
grid and captured his third win of 2015 Daniel
Ricciardo was second and Kimi Raikkonen
third. Lewis Hamilton suffered loss of engine
power while running in fourth position, and
slowly dropped further back before the team
called him in and out of the race. Hamilton
still leads the drivers table.
Norwegian cyclist Edvald Boasson-Hagen
won the eight stage Tour of Britain race.
Welshman Owain Doull was the top finishing
Brit in third place over-all, riding for Team
Bradley Wiggins.

Euro-2016: England Qualify,

Wales Edge Closer

Two rounds of the European Championship qualifiers were completed September

3-8, with all home nations in action Englands
6-0 win at San Marino, a small enclave
nestled in the Italian mountains, kept their
100 percent record and qualified them for
the Championship proper atop of Group E.
Wayne Rooney scored from the penalty
spot in the 13th minute, thus equalling Bobby
Charltons 49-goal scoring record for England. The mystery was why Rooney was
pulled off so early afterwards? San Marinos
Brolli scored an own goal, follow by Ross
Barkley, two by Theo Walcott and one from
Harry Kane. A crowded Wembley witnessed
a 2-0 victory over Switzerland, with goals
from Harry Kane (67th minute) and penalty by
Wayne Rooney six minutes from the whistle,
where he established an England goal scoring record of 50 goals. Roy Hodgson plans
needed immediate refurbishing after Fabian
Delph pulled a hamstring during the very first
minute of the game. England qualify for the
French final alongside Iceland, the Czech
Republic and Austria .
Wales looking to reach their first tournament proper since the World Cup of 1958, are
not only unbeaten, but lead Group B. A tough
unyielding encounter in Cyprus, had a Gareth
Bale header in the 82nd minute make the only
goal off the game while David Edwards had
a goal disallowed in the closing minutes. At
the Cardiff City Stadium, Wales spent most of
the time in the Israel half, mounting continual
pressure, but the Israeli defense hung on with
some deft defense. Simon Church netted in
the final seconds but it was clearly offside,
and the match ended scoreless.

Scotland Disappoint

Scotland travelled to Georgia, rated 147th

in the world by FIFA, and Gordon Strachans
hopes were high. But a nervous intense game
in Tibilisi, witnessed few opportunities as
shots on goal proved scarce. The Georgians
scored in the 37th minute, which was one of
the few chances that the hosts produced.
Scotland did hit the post, but the 1-0 reversal
severely hampers the Scots in qualifying in
Group D. At Hampden Park, a packed house
welcomed World Champions Germany, who
put on a spectacular possession game and
worked a 3-2 win over a Scots team that
never gave up and kept running. Thomas
Muller opened the scoring in the 18th minute,
Mats Hummel put the ball in his own net ten
minutes later. Muller got his second in the
34th minute, while James McArthur levelled
for Strachans brave warriors two minutes
before the break. IIkay Gundogan grabbed
Germanys winner in the 54th minute.

Northern Irelands Hopes Rise

Northern Ireland won 3-1 at the Faroe Is-

lands, where one of the hosts was red-carded

in the 64th minute and the Ulstermen took
full advantage in Group F. Gareth McAuley
opened the encounter in the 12th minute, while
the Faroes equalized nine minutes before the
break. McAuley hit a second in the 71st minute
and Lyle Lafferty made it three, four minutes
later. At Windsor Park, Hungary went ahead
in the 74 minute, but sadly, Chris Baird, was
red-carded seven minutes later. Lyle Lafferty rescued the Irish with a goal in the final
minute, for a 1-1 result. Biggest goal feast of
the round was Polands 8-1 win over UEFA
newcomers Gibraltar.

A Double For Altidore

Jozy Altidore put a brace away for the

United States at the RFK Stadium in Washington DC, coming from a goal down to beat
Peru 2-1. A serious bloodletting took place
at the Gillettte Stadium, Foxborough, Mass,
September 8, where Jurgen Klinsmanns
outfit came under severe fire as Brazil
romped to a 4-1 victory after a rather inept
American performance. Neymar got a brace,
while Danny Williams hit back for the US in
the closing minutes with a spectacular drive
that unfortunately, had little significance
on the final result. The United States face
Mexico, October 10, in the Gold Cup play-off
to decide who represents CONCACAF in the
Federations Cup in Russia, 2017.
Some big scores as the 2018 World Cup
qualifiers got under way. Qatar beat Bhutan
15-0, the United Arab Emirates tanked
Malaysia 10-0, and Kuwait blasted Myanmar (formerly Burma) 9-0. South Korea
overwhelmed Laos 8-0, and Saudi-Arabia
conquered Timor-Leste 7-0.

United Progress, Celtic Move To

Europa League, Saints Out

The second legs of the Champions

League and Europa Cup final qualifying
rounds in Europe, witnessed Manchester
United enlarge their 3-1 win at Old Trafford,
with a dominant 4-0 win in Belgium over
Club Brugge. The reds turned on the power
with a hat-trick by Wayne Rooney, a single
from Ander Herrera, and Javier Hernandez
missed a penalty. After 3-2 win at Parkhead,
Celtic failed to keep the advantage in Sweden,
where Malmo went ahead after 23 minutes.
Dedrick Boyatta scored an own goal during
a six yard box melee, and Nir Bitton had a
goal disallowed. The 2-0 defeat sees the
hoops move to the group stages of the Europa
League, while Manchester United continue in
the Champion League Group stage, which incredibly includes five Spanish sides this year.
Southamptons first campaign in Europe
since 2004, came to an end in Denmark
during the final qualifying round of the Europa
Cup. Having drew 1-1 with FC Midtjylland at
St Marys, former Celtic striker Marten Rasmussen, scored the only goal of the game
for the Danish champions in the away leg,
effectively putting the Saints out.

Euro-Group Games Results

The first matches of the Champions

League Group Stages, September 15-16,
saw Manchester City fall at the Etihad
Stadium to last years finalists Juventus.
Chiellini put the Sky Blues ahead with an
own goal in 57th minute, before Manzukic
(70m) and Morala (81st) forged a 2-1 Italian
victory Manchester United travelled to
the Netherlands where a 2-1 loss against
PSV Eindhoven, was complicated by a nasty
injury to Luke Shaw, who was carried off on
a stretcher. Memphis Depay put the reds
on the scorecard in the 41st minute, but the
Dutch levelled it on half-time with a netting
by Hector Moreno. Luciano Narsingh got
the winner in the 57th minutes Arsenal
had Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain score an own
goal in the 24th minute, then Olivier Giroud,
was sent-off five minutes before the break in
Croatia. Dinamo Zagreb went further ahead
in the 55th minute, while Theo Walcott, got
one back for the Gunners with eleven minutes
to go. Zagreb prevailed 2-1 At Stamford
Bridge, Chelsea overwhelmed Maccabi Tel
Aviv 4-0, with goals from Willian, Oscar,
Diego Costa and fourth by Cesc Fabregas.

Europa League Results

The first matches of the Europa League

Cup, Group Stages commenced September
17. Celtic held a 2-1 lead at Ajax of Amsterdam, but Emilio Izaguirre, was red-carded
in the 73rd minute and the Dutch came back
to tie the encounter 2-2 Nir Bitton (8m)
and Michael Lustig (42m) were the Hoops
marksmen Adam Lallana put Liverpool
in-front after 65 minutes at Bordeaux, but
the French equalized with nine minutes to
go for a 1-1 result. At White Hart Lane, Tottemham overcame the Azerbaijan champions
FK Qarabag 3-1. The visitors went ahead with
a penalty in the seventh minute, followed by
a brace from Son-Heung-min (28m & 30m)
and single by Erik Lamala, four minutes
from time.

English League Cup

The second round of the Capital One
English League Cup late August, brought
the premier clubs without European commitments into the contest. Watford was the only
Premier side to fall, losing 1-0 at Preston,
where a goal in the eighth minute by Marnick
Verimji made Preston proud. Premier sides
West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and
Stoke City limped through. The Albion drew
0-0 with Port Vale at the Hawthorns, before
winning a penalty shoot-out 5-3, Villa had
to go to extra-time at home against Notts
County before winning 5-3. Stoke had a
nasty scare at home with second division
Luton Town, that went to a penalty shoot- out
ending 8-7 in their favour. Championships
QPR got beaten 2-1 at Loftus Road by second
division outfit Carlisle Utd. Goal feast at
Sunderland where the Black Cats banished
Exeter City 6-3, (Jermain Defoe hat-trick)
and Premier newcomers Bournemuouth won
4-0 at Hartlepool.

Late Soccer

The third round of the Capital One English

League Cup, September 22-23, witnessed
Newcastle Utd bundled out at St James
Park, by Championship outfit Sheffield
Wednesday, when Lewis McGugans goal in
the 76th minute was enough to set the Magpies packing with the only goal of the game.
Swansea City found their premier league
status had little standing at Hull City, where
Steve Bruces Championship side edged the
Lilly Whites 1-0. Liverpool was hard put at
Anfield against Carlisle United, where a 1-1
tie went to a penalty shoot-out that the Reds
barely prevailed 3-2. Spurs were beaten at
home 2-1 by Arsenal, Manchester City beat
Sunderland 4-1, and Leicester overcame
West Ham 2-1. Goal-feast of the round
happened at Milton Keynes, where the Dons
were tamed 6-0 by Southampton.
Rangers unbeaten run of 11 Cup and
Championship matches in the new season,
came to unexpected end at the Ibrox Stadium,
where visitors St Johnstone conquered 3-1
in the third round of the Scottish League
Cup, September 22-23. Murray Davidson
hit the net in the 19th minute, Simon Lappin
got a second after 28 minutes, and Michael
OHalleran, prevailed five minutes before
the break to put the Saints riding high at 3-0.
James Tavernier got one for Rangers in the
62nd minute. Aberdeen have had a magnificent start to the season winning eight straight
premier matches, but late goals at Hibernian,
saw the Dons make an exit. Jason Cummings
and Dominique Malonga, netted in the 82nd
and 88th minute to give Hibs a 2-0 victory.
Celtic eased passed Raith Rovers 2-0, courtesy of Kris Commons and Stefan Johansen.
Greenock Morton topped Motherwell 3-2,
and Ross County shoved a 7-0 thrashing
down the throat of Falkirk, that included a
hat-trick by Liam Boyce.

Sporting Passings

A sad passing in the IndyCar world,

where Justin Wilson driving for the Andretti
Autosport team, was hit by debris during the
Pocono IndyCar 500 at the Pocono Raceway,
Pennsylvania, late August; causing him
to lose control and crash into the wall. He
was airlifted immediately to hospital, but the
injuries proved fatal. Born in Sheffield, the
six-foot-four Justin Wilson, won the Formula
3000 series in 2001, and turned his attention
to Formula One racing where he self-financed
his own team. He raced sixteen times as a
Formula One driver, before moving to the
States in 2004, and joining the Champ IndyCar circuit. When the IndyCar Racing League
merged with Champ in 2008, he was already
an established driver. The Pocono 500 was
his 176th start under the IndyCar genre.
Condolences came in from the very heart
of British racing with tributes from Lewis
Hamilton, Dario Franchitti, Jensen Button,
Sir Nigel Mansell and many others. He is
survived by his wife Julia and two daughters.
Justin Wilson was 37.
***
As an 18 year old teenager he is the
youngest person to play Test cricket for
England in a series against New Zealand in
1949. A fierce competitor with a combative
nature at the crease, and sometimes off the
pitch, Brian Close played 22 times for England, seven times as captain and skippered
Yorkshire to four county Championships.
When the Tykes were unsure of giving the
young Geoffrey Boycott, a contract, Closes
approval proved crucial. Weathering a West
Indian onslaught in the mid-1970s under the
tumultuous fast bowling of Charlie Griffiths
and Michael Holder, England brought him
back in the final Test as skipper at the age
of 55. Close brought England home with an
innings and 34 run victory. He moved to
Somerset later in his career, playing from
1971-77. He was awarded the CBE in 1975.
Brian Close was 84.

Japan Beat South Africa

THE EARLY exchanges in the 2015 Rugby

World Cup provided some interesting pointers
to the future of the game.
England predictably and comfortably saw
off the challenge of Fiji with a 35-11 win
on the opening night that also gave them
a bonus point for scoring four tries. Mike
Watson at fullback had a simply magnificent
game, scoring two tries and constantly adding penetration. A late try from Billy Vunipola
ensured the bonus point.
In the same pool, Wales easily secured
full points with a 54-9 victory over the largely
amateur Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium.
Wales are suffering from injuries, having
already lost Leigh Halfpenny and Rhys Webb
before the tournament. They picked up three
more here, most notably hat-trick try scorer
Tony Corey.
The biggest shock and it was a genuine
sensation was Japan beating twiceWorld-Champions South Africa 34-32. The
Sprtingboks arrived at the World Cup from a
background of national dissension over the
teams selection policy. But the last-minute
try they conceded was almost seismic in
its effect.
World Champions New Zealand achieved
the formality of success over Argentina but it
was by no means a walk-over. The All Blacks

came from behind with two late tries to record

a 26-16 score-line.
Ireland brushed aside Canada with
another bonus point winning score 50-7.
But the Canadians didnt just roll over they
fought to the end and even looked the superior side for much of the second half. Irish
class eventually won through.
There were also wins for Samoa over
the USA, Georgia against Tonga, and for
France who opened their campaign with a
fairly comfortable 32-10 demolition of Italy.
Apart from the sensational Japanese victory, it was pretty much business as usual to
start the tournament. The well-drilled superfit
top nations simply have too much experience
and quality for the junior sides though it has
to be said that if the second favourites, South
Africa, can be beaten by a relative minnow
like Japan that other surprises must lie in wait.
Two other things spring to mind. The
first is the seemingly endless use of replay
television to identify if a try can be awarded
or to look closely for signs of foul play. The
slow-motion replaying can get a bit tedious
and add as much a ten minutes or more to
each half of a game.
The other thing that is increasingly obvious
is that the game tends to get bogged down
for long periods as the forwards slug it out
in mauls and rucks. It is rather boring, it has
to be said, and frequently leads to invisible
tries with the ball disappearing into a ruck of
players on the 22 and ending up on the tryline where we have to wait till the ultra-slow
motion will reveal huge muddy bodies just
about grounding the ball. How exciting is that!
At the early stage, New Zealand and England still seem the likeliest winners.

Ron Springett, 80, the former England
goalkeeper who played at the 1962 World
Cup but was an unused squad member four
years later as the team triumphed, has died.
He was 80.
The Football Association said last month
that the former Sheffield Wednesday and
Queens Park Rangers player died following
a short illness.
Springett reached the quarterfinals with
England at the 1962 World Cup in Chile where
the team was knocked out by Brazil.
The last of his 33 international appearances came shortly before the 1966 World
Cup, losing his place to Gordon Banks as
England lifted the trophy.
He received a winners medal in 2009 following a campaign to honor squad members
who didnt play in the final.

De Gea Signs 4-Year Deal

With Man United

DAVID DE GEA signed a four-year contract

with Manchester United last month, making
a fresh commitment to the Premier League
club less than two weeks after a transfer to
Real Madrid fell through.
The contract, which will tie the 24-yearold Spain international to Old Trafford until
2019, marks the latest twist in a saga that
dominated the offseason transfer market.
De Gea has made 175 appearances for
United since joining in 2011, but he has
long been a target for Madrid. The two teams
made a deal for a transfer but the paperwork
was not completed in time for the deadline
on August 31.

Arsenals Jack Wilshere

Having Surgery On Left Fibula

ARSENAL says midfielder Jack Wilshere is

to undergo surgery on his left fibula and is
expected to be out for three months.
The decision was made after scans
showed healing from the initial injury, a
break in August, was not progressing as
well as hoped.
The England international will have a small
plate inserted into his leg.
Wilshere missed a majority of the 2014-15
season after undergoing left ankle surgery
last November, returning in April for the last
six games of the season.

United Defender Shaw Has

Operation On Broken Leg

MAN UNITED says defender Luke Shaw

has had surgery on his broken right leg in
the Netherlands, and returned to the UK on
September 19 for the early stages of his
rehabilitation.
Shaw broke his leg in two places in a
tackle by PSV Eindhoven defender Hector
Moreno in the first half of a Champions
League group game last month.
United said that six months is the usual
expected time out of the game for such an
injury.

Study: 800,000 Tourists Attended

Football Games In England Las Year
THE LURE of British football is highlighted in a study which found that
800,000 international visitors to the
country last year attended a match,
spending more than $1bn during their
time there.
Figures released by VisitBritain show
that around 40 percent of the tourists
going to a match said watching sport
was the main reason for visiting Britain.
Old Trafford and Emirates Stadium, the

homes of Manchester United and Arsenal, were the most popular destinations
among tourists for watching football with
109,000 visits. One in 10 overseas visitors
to the northwest of England where clubs
such as United, Manchester City and
Liverpool are located attended a match.
Ireland (121,000), Norway (93,000)
and Sweden (58,000) were the countries
that provided most football-attending
visitors.

during the 2-2 draw with Swansea on

8 August.
Chelsea asked Carneiro, 42, to return
to work, but she has decided not to and
is now considering her legal position.
Carneiro and head physio Jon Fearn
went onto the pitch to treat midfielder
Hazard in the closing stages of the draw
with Swansea.
The Football Association has since
cleared Mourinho of using abusive or
sexist language towards her.

LIVERPOOL captain Jordan Henderson has

broken his right foot and could be out for up
to eight weeks.
The 25-year-old Henderson sustained the
injury in training and was said to be due to
have an operation. But later stories in the UK
suggest he has not undergone any procedure.
The midfielder has not played for Liverpool
since August 17, where he came off with a
left heel injury after 52 minutes of the 1-0 win
against Bournemouth.
Henderson travelled to the United States
last month for treatment on the problem.

Derbys American Owners

Sell To Candy Crush
Entrepreneur

DERBY COUNTYS American owners have

sold the English second-tier club to a local
businessman who made a fortune through the
Candy Crush Saga mobile game.
Former Detroit Pistons executive Andy
Appleby fronted the takeover seven years ago
by a group of Americans, including investors
in baseball, basketball and hockey franchises.
Within months of their takeover, Derby
was relegated from the Premier League and
the team has stayed in the Championship
since 2008.
Now life-long Derby fan Mel Morris, who
bought a 22 percent stake in the team earlier
this year, has become the sole owner. Morris
stepped down last year as chairman of King
Digital, the New York Stock Exchange-listed
company which created Candy Crush.
The annual Rich List published by the
London-based Sunday Times estimates that
Morris is worth 400m.
Five Premier League teams are owned by
Americans: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool,
Manchester United and Sunderland.
