TEENS BUY CIGARETTES

A new study shows that teens can often illegally buy cigarettes, even when they show shop
assistants a valid photo identification (ID) that proves they are under age. In fact, shop assistants in the
study sold cigarettes more frequently to minors who presented identification than to those who had no ID,
despite the date of birth on the ID. The terrible irony of this discovery is that teens who proved they were
too young could get cigarettes more easily than those who were not able to certify their underage status.
A group of 14- to 17-year-olds made 1,080 attempts to purchase cigarettes in shops in urban and
suburban communities in Colorado. Half of the time they carried a drivers license or other legal photo
identification, and no identification the other half of the time. Most shop assistants asked the teens to show
proof of age, but these assistants sold cigarettes to minors who presented identification documenting their
true age more often than to those who did not. Consequently, we are wrong if we believe that one of the
ways to prevent minors from starting to smoke is to stop them buying cigarettes and to prohibit stores
selling cigarettes to them. It is still vital to make teens conscious of the terrible dangers of smoking.
