originalGrimmstalesormuchabouttheirlives.Thatis,mostpeoplehavenocluethattheGrimms
firsteditionof1812/15istotallyunlikethefinalorsocalleddefinitiveeditionof1857,thatthey

publishedsevendifferenteditionsfrom1812to1857,andthattheymadevastchangesinthe
contentsandstyleoftheircollectionsandalsoalteredtheirconceptoffolkandfairytalesinthe
process.EvensocalledscholarsofGermanliteratureandexpertsoftheGrimmstalesarenotaware
ofhowlittlemostpeople,includingthemselves,knowaboutthefirstedition,andironicallyitis
theirandourignorancethatmakestherediscoveryofthetalesinthefirsteditionsoexcitingand
exhilarating.Indeed,thereisstillmuchtolearnabouttheuniquecontributionthattheGrimmsmade
tofolklorenotonlyinGermanybutalsoinEuropeifwereturntotakeacloserlookatthefirst
edition,foritwasthiseditionthatsparkedthepioneereffortsoffolkloriststhroughoutEuropeand
GreatBritaintogathertalesfromtheoraltraditionandpreservethemforfuturegenerations.
ToexplainwhyIbelievethatarediscoveryoftheGrimmsfirsteditioncanbenotonlyexcitingbut
alsoilluminatingIwouldliketosharesomeimportantbackgroundinformationthatwillplacethe
Grimmscollectioninasociohistoricalcontextandshedlightontheirremarkableaccomplishment.
Herewemustbearinmindthattheircollectingwasonlyaminorpartoftheirresearchand
scholarshipandthattheywouldbesurprisedtoknowthattheyaremorefamoustodayfortheirtales
thanfortheirsuperbphilologicalwork.WhenJacob(b.1785)andWilhelm(b.1786)began
collectingallkindsoffolktalesandsongsatthebeginningofthenineteenthcentury,theywerevery
youngprecociousstudentsattheUniversityofMarburg,stillintheirteens.
By1805theirentirefamilyhadmovedfromtheirsmallvillageofHanautothenearbyprovincial
cityofKassel,andtheBrotherswereconstantlyplaguedbymoneyproblemsandconcernsabout
theirsiblings.Theirfatherhadbeendeadforsomeyears,andtheywereabouttolosetheirmother.
TheirsituationwasfurtheraggravatedbytherampantNapoleonicWars.Jacobinterruptedhis
studiestoservetheHessianWarCommissionin1806.Meanwhile,Wilhelmpassedhislawexams
enablinghimtobecomeacivilservantandtofindworkasalibrarianintheroyallibrarywitha
meagersalary.In1807JacoblosthispositionwiththeWarCommission,whentheFrenchoccupied
Kassel,buthewasthenhiredasalibrarianforthenewKingJrome,Napoleonsbrother,whonow
ruledWestphalia.Amidstalltheupheavals,theirmotherdiedin1808,andJacobandWilhelm
becamefullyresponsiblefortheirthreeyoungerbrothersandsister.Despitethelossoftheirmother
anddifficultpersonalandfinancialcircumstancesfrom1805to1812,theBrothersmanagedto
provethemselvestobeinnovativescholarsinthenewfieldofGermanphilologybypublishing
articlesandbooksonmedievalliterature.Stillintheirtwenties,theywereabouttolaunchthe
collectionoftalesthatwastobecomesecondinpopularitytotheBiblethroughoutGermanyand
laterthroughoutthewesternworldbythetwentiethcentury.

WhatfascinatedorcompelledtheGrimmstoconcentrateonoldGermanliteraturewasabeliefthat
themostnaturalandpureformsofculturethosewhichheldthecommunitytogetherwere
linguisticandweretobelocatedinthepast.Moreover,accordingtothem,modernliterature,even
thoughitmightberemarkablyrich,wasartificialandthuscouldnotexpressthegenuineessenceof
Volkculturethatemanatednaturallyfrompeoplesexperiencesandboundthepeopletogether.
Therefore,alltheirenergieswerespentonuncoveringstoriesfromthepast.Thisiswhytheirfriend,
theromanticpoetClemensBrentano,askedthemin1808tocollectalltypesoffolktalesthathe
wantedtoreviseinabookofliteraryfairytales.In1810theysenthim54textsthattheyfortunately
copied.Fortunately,Isay,becauseBrentanoproceededtolosethemanuscriptinthelenberg
monasteryinAlsaceanddidnotusetheGrimmstexts.MeanwhiletheGrimmskeptcollectingtales
fromfriends,acquaintances,andcolleagues,andwhentheyrealizedthatBrentanowasnotgoingto
usethetalesfromtheirmanuscript,theydecided,upontheadviceofamutualfriendandanother
romanticauthor,AchimvonArnim,topublishtheircollectionthathadgrowntoapproximately86

BeforeIdiscusstheunusualqualityofthetalesinthesetwovolumes,Iwanttocommentbrieflyon
theidealisticintentionsoftheyoungGrimms.Thatis,Iwanttosummarizetheideologicalstance
theytookbypublishingthetalestheyhadcollected.

AlthoughtheyoungGrimmshadnotentirelyformalizedtheirconceptoffolklorewhiletheyworked

tales,myths,songs,fables,legends,epics,documents,andotherartifactsnotjustfairytales.They
intendedtotraceandgrasptheessenceofculturalevolutionandtodemonstratehownatural
language,stemmingfromtheneeds,customs,andritualsofthecommonpeople,createdauthentic
bondsandhelpedforgecivilizedcommunities.Thisisoneofthereasonswhytheycalledtheir
collectionoftalesaneducationalmanual(Erziehungsbuch),forthetalesrecalledthebasicvaluesof
theGermanicpeoplesandalsootherEuropeangroupsandenlightenedpeopleabouttheir
experiencesthroughstorytelling.Remarkably,theGrimmsatayoungagewantedtobequeaththe
profoundoraltalesofthepeopletotheGermanpeoplenotrealizingthattheywereaboutto
bequeathunusuallystrikingtalestopeopleofmanydifferentnations,andthatthesetalesassumed
relevanceinallcultures.Tounderstandtherolethatthetalesplayedintheirbequesttowestern
civilizationifnottheworld,wemustbearinmindwhattheystatedintheprefaceofthefirstedition:
Itisprobablyjusttherighttimetogatherthesetales,sincethosewhohavebeenmakingan
efforttopreservethemarebecomingevenhardertofind(tobesure,thosewhoknowthem
stillknowagreatdeal,becausepeoplemaydie,butthestoriesliveon).....Wherethetales
stillexist,theyliveonandnooneworrieswhethertheyaregoodorbad,poeticorvulgar.We
knowthemandwelovethemjustbecausewehappentohaveheardtheminacertainway,
andwelikethemwithoutreflectingonwhy.Tellingthesetalesisanextraordinarycustom
andthistoothetalessharewitheverythingimmortalthatonemustlikeitnomatterwhat
otherssay.
TheGrimmssoughttocelebrateandargueforthenecessityofstorytellingtocreatebondsamong
peoplethatsharetheirexperiencesthroughstories.Theybelievedthatthetalesandalltheirvariants
weredistinctiveandkeptculturaltraditionalive.Theyrespecteddifferenceanddiversity,andatthe
sametimetheyarguedthatTheaimofourcollectionwasnotjusttoservethecauseofthehistory
ofpoetry.Itwasourintentionthatthepoetrylivinginitbeeffective,bringingpleasurewhereverit
could,andthatitthereforebecomeaneducationalmanual.

AlthoughthereweresomeotherGermancollectionsoffolkandfairytales,thatprecededthe
GrimmsKinderundHausmrchen,nonewereasdiverseordrivenbyatheBrotherscooperative
andcollectivespiritthatspurredthemtoembraceallkindsoftalesfromGermanspeaking

AsocietyhasbeenfoundedthatisintendedtospreadthroughoutallofGermanyandhasas
itsgoaltosaveandcollectalltheexistingsongsandtalesthatcanbefoundamongthe
commonGermanpeasantry(Landvolk).Ourfatherlandisstillfilledwiththiswealthof
materialalloverthecountrythatourhonestancestorsplantedforus,andthat,despitethe
mockeryandderisionheapeduponit,continuestolive,unawareofitsownhiddenbeauty
andcarrieswithinititsownunquenchablesource.Ourliterature,history,andlanguage
cannotseriouslybeunderstoodintheiroldandtrueoriginswithoutdoingmoreexact
researchonthismaterial.Consequently,itisourintentiontotrackdownasdiligentlyas
possibleallthefollowingitemsandtowritethemdownasfaithfullyaspossible:....
1)Folksongsandrhymes,
2)Talesinprosethataretoldandknown,inparticularthenumerousnurseryand
childrensfairytalesaboutgiants,dwarfs,monsters,enchantedandrescuedroyalchildren,
devils,treasures,andmagicinstrumentsaswellaslocallegendsthathelpexplaincertain
places.
3)Funnytalesabouttricksplayedbyroguesandanecdotespuppetplaysfromold
timeswithHanswurstandthedevil.
4)Folkfestivals,mores,customs,andgames.
5)Superstitions.
6)Proverbs,unusualdialects,parables,wordcomposition.
Itisextremelyimportantthattheseitemsaretoberecordedfaithfullyandtruly,without
embellishmentandadditions,wheneverpossiblefromthemouthofthetellersinandwith
theirveryownwordsinthemostexactanddetailedway.Itwouldbeofdoublevalueif
everythingcouldbeobtainedinthelocallivedialect.Ontheotherhand,evenfragmentswith
gapsarenottoberejected.Indeed,allthederivations,repetitions,andcopiesofthesame
talecanbeindividuallyimportant....Hereweadvisethatyounotbemisledbythedeceptive
opinionthatsomethinghasalreadybeencollectedandrecorded,andthereforethatyou
discardastory.Manythingsthatappeartobemodernhaveoftenonlybeenmodernizedand
hastheirundamagedsourcebeneathit.Assoonasonehasagreatfamiliaritywiththe
contentsofthisfolkliterature(Volkspoesie),onewillgraduallybeabletoevaluatethe
allegedsimplistic,crudeandevenrepulsiveaspectsmorediscreetly.
ThiscircularletteralongwiththefirsteditionofKinderundHausmrchenwentontoinspire
numerousGerman,Austrian,andSwissfolkloriststobegincollectingtales,andgraduallythe
GrimmsexampleandtheirothereditionsanimatedfolkloriststhroughoutEuropeandGreatBritain

tocollectandpreserveoralfolktales.IfanyoftheeditionsthattheGrimmspublishedbest
representedtheirintentionsandidealsthattheykeptreiteratinguntil1857,itwastheirfirstedition
becausetheydidnothonethestoriesthewaytheyhonedandrefinedthetalesinlatereditions.In
fact,youcanhearthedistinctivevoicesofthestorytellersfromwhomtheyreceivedthetales,andto
thisextent,thetalesinthefirstedition,someinGermandialect,aremoreauthenticfolktalesand
havemoreintegritytothemdespitethefactthattheyarenotasaestheticallypleasingasthosein

oralityandrawcontents.Forinstance,Rapunzelrevealsthatshehasbecomeimpregnatedbythe
princeSnowWhitesmother,notherstepmother,wantstokillthebeautifulgirloutofenvythe
wildmanisnotIronJohnandplaysadifferentroleinhelpingtheboywholiberateshim,justasthe
devilplaysamoreunusualroleinDerTeufelGrnrock,laterreplacedbyBrenhuter.
Thirdly,areaderwillrecognizeimmediatelythatallthesetalesarebluntandhavelittleorno
description.Theemphasisisonactionandtheresolutionofconflict.Thestorytellersdonotbeat
aboutthebush.Theyarepronetotellthetruthstheyknow,andeventhoughmagic,superstition,

Metaphormapsouttherealityoflistenersandengagespeopletolearnfromsymbolshowtoengage
theirrealities.
Lastly,itisimportanttonotethatthetalesinthefirsteditionwerecollectedmainlyfromliterate
peoplewhomtheGrimmscametoknowquitewell.Forinstancetheywerewellacquaintedthe
membersoftheWildandHassenpflugfamiliesinKasselandthevonHaxthausenfamilyin
MnsterWilhelmknewtheministersdaughterFriederikeMannelinanearbytown.Dorothea
Viehmann,atailorswife,providedmanytales,andinsomeinstances,theGrimmstooktalesfrom
booksorreceivedtalesinletters.Theliteracyoftheinformants,however,didnotdiminishthefolk
essenceofthetalesthat,astheGrimmsandotherfolkloristsweretodiscover,werewidespread
throughoutEuropeandtoldmoreoftenthannotindialect.Thetalescametothetellersfromother
tellers,ortheyreadtales,digestedthem,andmadethemtheirown.Indeed,wealwaysmaketales
ourownandthensendthemofftoothertellerswiththehopethattheywillcontinuetodisseminate
theirstories.
TheGrimmshaveoftenbeencriticized,especiallybycriticsinthelast50years,forhavingchanged
andeditedthetalesfromthefirsttotheseventhedition.Thatis,theyneverliveduptotheirown
wordsthatthetaskofthecollectoristorecordthetalesexactlyastheyheardthem.Inotherwords,
variouscriticshavecomplainedthattheGrimmstalesareinauthenticfolktales.Butthisisa
ridiculousifnotstupidargument,fornobodycaneverrecordandmaintaintheauthenticityofatale.
Itisimpossible.Andyet,theGrimms,ascollectors,cultivators,editors,translators,andmediators,
aretobethankedforendeavoringtodotheimpossibleandtoworkcollectivelywithnumerous
peopleandtheirsourcestokeeptraditionalstoriesandstorytellingalive.Inthisrespecttheirlittle
knownfirsteditiondeservestoberediscovered,foritisatestimonytoforgottenvoicesthatare
actuallydeepwithinus.Hence,theirresistibilityoftheGrimmstalesthatarereallynottheirs,but
ours.
