Positive Displacement Pumps - Controlled Volume

The following paragraph numbers refer to API STD 675, Second Edition, October 1994,
which is part of this Specification. The text in each paragraph below is an addition to this
Standard unless it is noted as an exception. Paragraph numbers which do not appear in
API STD 675 are new paragraph numbers to be inserted in numerical order.

General
1.1

Scope

1.1.1

This Specification, together with the Pump Data Sheet and Purchase Order,
defines the minimum mandatory requirements for positive displacement,
controlled volume pumps of the diaphragm and packed plunger types.
Diaphragm pumps using direct mechanical actuation are excluded from this
Specification.

1.1.2

Metering pumps shall be supplied by Vendors qualified by experience in


manufacturing the units proposed. To qualify, the Vendor must have
manufactured, at the proposed manufacturing location, at least two pumps of
comparable speed, flow, head, power rating and discharge pressure for a
liquid of comparable characteristics. These pumps must have been in
service for at least one year and must be performing satisfactorily.

1.1.3

The Vendor shall not quote any prototype system.

1.1.4

Systems manufactured under a license agreement shall carry the licensor's


written guarantee.

1.2

Alternative Designs

1.2.1

All deviations from this Specification shall be separately listed by the


Vendor in his quotation and shall refer to the relevant paragraph numbers.

1.3

Conflicting Requirements

1.3.1

Any conflicts between this Specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs) or industry standards, codes and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the
Manager, Consulting Services Department, Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

1.3.2

Direct all requests to deviate from this Specification in writing to the


Company or Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company
procedure SAEP-302 and forward such requests to the Manager, Consulting
Services Department, Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

Basic Design
2.1

General

2.1.4

Equipment sound pressure levels shall not exceed 85 dB(A) at a distance of


one meter. Control of the sound pressure to meet this requirement shall be
the sole responsibility of the Vendor.

2.1.12

(Modification) Unless otherwise specified, the equipment will be installed


outdoors in a desert area, with relative humidity from zero to 100%
(condensing) and ambient temperatures from 0C to 50C (32F to 120F).
Metal temperature can reach 70C (158F) when exposed to direct solar
radiation. The equipment shall be designed to withstand these conditions.
Additionally, equipment which is not enclosed or hermetically sealed and is
situated offshore or near shore (i.e., within km of the shoreline) shall be
protected against failure due to windborne seawater spray and the
accumulation of wetted salts.

2.1.21

A volumetric air venting valve shall be provided to automatically expel any


gas from the hydraulic fluid and to ensure specified flow accuracy.

2.2

Pressure Containing Parts

2.2.2

The Vendor's operating and instruction manual shall indicate torque values
to be used for the bolting of the cylinder head(s).

2.2.5.1

Details of threading shall conform to ASME B1.1/ASME B1.13M.


Other threading standards require approval by the Coordinator, Mechanical
& Civil Engineering Division, Consulting Services Department.

2.3

Liquid End Connections

2.3.1

(Exception) Connections shall be suitable for the maximum allowable pump


working pressure.

2.3.6.2

Flat-faced flanges are not acceptable for materials other than cast iron or
Ni-resist alloys.

2.5

Diaphragms

2.5.2

Sandwich type double diaphragm pumps shall be supplied when specified on


the Data Sheet.

2.5.5

Double diaphragm pumps shall be provided with a diaphragm failure


signaling system.

2.7

Relief Valve Application

2.7.1

(Exception to second sentence) The actual pump internal relief valve setting
shall be between 110% and 120% of the rated discharge pressure.

2.11

Lubrication

2.11.1

Details of forced feed lubrication systems shall be submitted through the


Company or Buyer Representative for review and approval of the
Coordinator, Mechanical & Civil Engineering Division, Consulting Services
Department.

2.12

Capacity Adjustment

2.12.1

Mechanical lost motion capacity adjustment is not permitted.

2.13

Materials

2.13.1

General

2.13.1.9

(Exception) Materials exposed to a sour environment shall be in accordance


with the requirements of ISO 15156.

Nameplates and Rotation Arrows

2.14.3

Pump nameplates shall also include Purchase Order number, service, pump
mark number, liquid pumped, pulsation damper charging pressure, lubricant,

Accessories
3.1

Drivers

3.1.1

Electric motors shall be in accordance with 17-SAMSS-503.

3.2

Couplings and Guards

3.2.2

Lubricated couplings are not permitted.

3.4

Controls and Instrumentation

3.4.1

General

3.4.1.1

Instrumentation shall comply with 34-SAMSS-831. Electrical installation


shall comply with 17-SAMSS-515.

3.4.2

Control Systems

3.4.2.3

Solid state systems shall be supplied in accordance with 34-SAMSS-621.


Relay systems shall be in accordance with 34-SAMSS-622. Programmable
controller based systems shall be in accordance with 34-SAMSS-623.

3.4.3

Instrument and Control Panels

3.4.3.1

Indoor control cabinets shall comply with 34-SAMSS-820. Outdoor control


panels shall comply with 34-SAMSS-821. Additional requirements shall be
as follows:
1)

Terminals installed outside the control panel shall be mounted in


terminal boxes;

2)

Intrinsically safe systems, when provided, shall be in accordance with


SAES-J-903;

3)

Separate terminals and boxes shall be used for RTD wiring.

3.4.4

Instrumentation

3.4.4.2

Thermowells
Thermowells shall be in accordance with Form 8020-418-ENG or
Form 8020-418-M-ENG. Wake and natural frequency calculations shall be
performed in accordance with ASME PTC 19.3 Part 3. The insertion length
shall satisfy a wake to natural frequency ratio of 0.8.

Piping

3.5.1

General

3.5.1.1

Auxiliary piping shall be in accordance with 01-SAMSS-017.

3.6

Pulsation Suppression Devices

3.6.1

Pressure pulsation suppression devices shall be furnished by the Vendor as


necessary to meet the following criteria. Unfiltered peak to peak pulsation
levels shall not exceed 3% of:
a)

rated suction pressure or 100 kPa gauge (15 psig) whichever is less;

b)

rated discharge pressure or 100 kPa gauge (15 psig) whichever is less.
The Vendor shall be responsible for ensuring that the following
situations are avoided:
- cavitation in the suction or discharge of the pump;
- over delivery due to suction losses or uncontrolled delivery;
- exceeding maximum allowable working pressure of pressure
containing parts (including auxiliaries).

The Vendor shall provide any fittings required for charging the pulsation
dampers. These shall be securely fastened to the pump.
3.6.2

Pulsation dampers shall be designed so that no solids settle in the interior of


these devices.

Inspection, Testing and Preparation for Shipment


4.1

General

4.1.1

Buyer's inspection shall be in accordance with the referenced Form


175-311500.

4.4

Preparation for Shipment

4.4.3.4

All alloy casings shall be provided with plugs of the same material as the
casing.

4.4.3.8

All loose materials and mill scale shall be removed by blasting to Sa 2 or by


pickling from reservoirs, tanks, coolers, filters, bearing housings, piping, and
other components with which lube oil come in contact.

4.4.3.9

A complete set of spare gaskets and O-rings shall be included with the
equipment when shipped.
