POINTILLISM

Jaime Ferrer and Porong Chavez

WHAT IS POINTILLISM?

Pointillism is a painting technique where small differently colored dots are

arranged in a pattern to form an image.
Developed in 1886 by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.
Branches from Impressionism.

OPTICAL MIXING

The illusion that pointillism uses.

When two colors next to each other are merged by our eyes
The whole is greater than the sum of
its parts

Instead of blending the paint, the

artist utilizes separate dots or strokes
of color.

HISTORY OF POINTILLISM

Concept was created by Georges Seurat in the 1880s.

He painted A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte in 1884-1886.
Although not the first artwork
practicing Pointillism, it is the most
well-known, exhibited at the eighth
annual and final Impressionist
exhibition in 1886.

Revolutionized Impressionism,
challenging well-known names back
then such as Renoir and Monet,
paving a new way for
Neoimpressionism.
