Introduction

Internet cafs are located worldwide, and many people use them
when traveling to access webmail and instant messaging services to
keep in touch with family and friends. Apart from travelers, in many
developing countries Internet cafs are the primary form of Internet
access for citizens as a shared-access model is more affordable than
personal ownership of equipment and/or software. A variation on the
Internet caf business model is the LAN gaming center, used for
multiplayer gaming. These cafs have several computer stations
connected to a LAN. The connected computers are custom-assembled
for gameplay, supporting popular multiplayer games. This is reducing
the need for video arcades and arcade games, many of which are
being closed down or merged into Internet cafs. The use of Internet
cafs for multiplayer gaming is particularly popular in certain areas of
Asia like India, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea and the
Philippines.
Internet cafs or better known as computer shops are found on
every street in major cities and there is at least one in most
municipalities or towns. There are also Internet cafs in coffee shops
and malls. High-end restaurants and fast food chains also provide free
broadband to diners. Rates range from P15 on streets, up to P100 in
malls.
Mr. Fracisco, the owner started his business in the year 2005 in a
rented space in Villalon Mayantoc, Tarlac. He started with 10 brand
new computers designed for office and minor games only, the shop
started dull but as time passed by students from nearby schools
regularly came to the caf to do some research work and play
computer games, the owner noticed that his shop getting popular
because of their computer games.
At year 2008 the owner added 5 more computers and moved to
Poblacion Sur Mayantoc, Tarlac, and the land was rented to Mrs. Vilma

Acosta, their the shop is more noticeable and near the town proper and
nearer to most schools in Mayantoc.
On year 2010 with right earnings, the owner upgraded all
computers to support heavy online games like Dota 2, Call of Duty, and
Left for Dead, etc.
The shop gain more and more costumers, most are students
lending their free times in playing computer games.
Lastly, he added five more computers to accommodate the
gaining of clients going to the shop, sometimes the shop works 24
hours a day.
With little knowledge in network design, and with the help of a
comrade, Mr. Justine Pascual, they are the ones in charge in the
maintenance of the whole Internet Caf, problems occur like lag,
because of the overuse of computers and lack of memory capacity,
disconnection because of faulty network cables, and file stealing
because of unsecure network system.
Network planning and designing is needed in creating a Network
Design

inconvenience to the costumers of Ron.net Internet Caf.
3. The service in Ron.net Internet Caf is unsecured which make
other people enter the network without the owners knowledge.
OBJECTIVES
General Objective:
The general objective of this study is to propose a network
design proposal for Ron.net Internet Caf.

This study will serve as guidelines for those who may be
interested

to

make

further

study

about

the

problem.

The

recommendation of the study may also be useful to the other

researchers as input data for their planning and conducting of related
study in the Network Design Proposal.
To the Society
This study will familiarize them in different ICT equipment and to
inform them the use of computer network in our daily life and most
especially what technology can be nowadays.

Part II
EXISTING SYSTEM
Description of the Existing System
This kind of Network system is very common and widely used by
Internet caf, because it is the simplest, and cost less than the other
network system. In this type of topology, all the nodes (computers as
well as servers) are connected to the single cable (called bus), by the
help of interface connectors. This central cable is the backbone of the
network and is known as Bus (truth name). Every workstation
communicates with the other device through this Bus.

EXISTING ICT INFRASTRACTURE

Existing Hardware
Ron.net has 21 existing numbers of workstations, 20 computers
for clients and 1 acts as a server. The server has a 3 in 1 printer
connected to it, these utility provides the services to be able to get
hard copies (printer), scan any hardcopy format entity into a softcopy
format into the computer system (scanner) and to xerox a hard copy
files (Xerox).

The existing topology of Ron.net Internet Caf is Bus Topology.

Bus Topology is the simplest of network topologies. In this type of
topology, all the nodes (computers as well as servers) are connected to
the single cable (called bus), by the help of interface connectors. This
central cable is the backbone of the network and is known as Bus
(truth name). Every workstation communicates with the other device
through this Bus.

Existing Network Devices

Ron.net Internet Caf Has a PLDT DSL as their internet provider
and is connected to a router, The Router operates at the Network Layer
of the OSI reference model, distinguishing between Network Layer
protocols and making intelligent packet-forwarding decisions based on
each packets network address, then to a hub to connect the
workstations.
ICT Manpower
Ron.net Internet caf has 3 personnel, First, Mr. Fransico Castro is
the owner and the manager of the establishment, Justine Pascual is the
one who daily cleans and checks minor problems on the shop, Mr.
Frank Castro, brother of the owner comes once a month to check,
replace, and the one who do the heavy maintenance. He is a NC II
registered computer service technician.

PART III
PROPOSED SYSTEM
Description of the Proposed System
Star topology is different than bus topology. Star topology, each
computer is connected to a central point from a dedicated cable. The
central point is a device called hub. Although this topology uses more
cable but failure only occurs on one cable. Usually this only affects one
portion of the network.

utilization by one device

without affecting others.

Each device is inherently

isolated by the link that
connects it to the hub.
This makes the isolation
of individual devices
straightforward and
amounts to
disconnecting each
device from the others..
Network Topology

The researchers proposed a STAR Topology for the Ron.net

Internet Caf. The star topology reduces the chance of network failure
by connecting all of the systems to a central node. When applied to a
bus-based network, this central hub rebroadcasts all transmissions
received from any peripheral node to all peripheral nodes on the
network, sometimes including the originating node. All peripheral
nodes may thus communicate with all others by transmitting to, and
receiving from, the central node only. The failure of a transmission line
linking any peripheral node to the central node will result in the
isolation of that peripheral node from all others, but the rest of the
systems will be unaffected.
It is also designed with each node (file servers, workstations, and
peripherals) connected directly to a central network hub, switch,
or concentrator.
Star

networks are

one

of

the

most

common computer

network topologies. In its simplest form, a star network consists of one

central switch, hub or computer, which acts as a conduit to transmit
messages. This consists of a central node, to which all other nodes are
12

connected; this central node provides a common connection point for

all nodes through a hub. In star topology, every node (computer
workstation or any other peripheral) is connected to central node
called hub or switch. The switch is the server and the peripherals are
the clients

Proposed Network Diagram

This figure shows a network diagram. This is a star network
diagram. The network topology that proposed by the researchers.
The information flow was shown on this figure. The star topology is
used a common backbone to connect all devices. Data on a star
network passes through the switch, hub, or concentrator before
continuing to its destination. The hub, switch, or

13

concentrator manages and controls all functions of the network. It also

acts as a repeater for the data flow. This configuration is common
with twisted pair cable. However, it can also be used with coaxial
cable or optical fiber cable.
