PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK
A. The work of this Section covers fire protection using water spray fixed syst
ems.
B. Water spray fixed systems shall be appli ed for protection of specific hazar
ds and
equipment.
C. Water spray fixed systems shall be insta lled independently of, or supplemen
tary to,
other forms of fire protection systems or equipment.
D. The fire protection water supply lines, controlling devices, protective dev
ices, alarm
systems, supervisory devices, and related eq uipment shall be compatible so that
all
equipment will function together as specified.
E. The design, selection, installation, in spection, testing and maintenance of
water
spray fixed systems shall be in accordance with NFPA 15.
F. For interpretation of NFPA standards, and this Section; the "Authorities Hav
ing
Jurisdiction" referred to in the Standards shall be the Royal Commission.
1.02 SECTION INCLUDES
A. This Section includes piping, water spray nozzle, alarm, fire department con
nections
and related appurtenances; as shown on the Design Drawings and specified herein.
1.03 SCOPE OF WORK
A. Furnishing, installation, testing and bringi ng systems into full satisfacto
ry operational
conditions of the fire protection sprinkler systems.
B. The Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment requ
ired to
make the work complete and ready.
C. The Contractor shall provide all temporary power suppl y, services, storage
tanks, fill
and refill mediums, chemicals, fuels and all other materials required for testin
g,
commissioning and start-ups.
D. The work addressed in this Section s hall be coordinated with all other rela
ted
systems.
E. This Section shall be read in conjunction with SECTIONS 15310 and 15055.

1.06 DEFINITIONS
A. Refer to NFPA 15.
1.07 SUBMITTALS
A. The Contractor shall submit to the Ro yal Commission, under the provisions o
f
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:
1. Compliance Statement
a) Submit certificates from the manufacturer as evidence that the products
meet these Specifications and the referenced standards and codes.
2. Statements of NFPA compliance and UL listing, as applicable.
3. Contractor's Material and Test Certificate as described in NFPA 13.
4. Hydraulic calculations shall be prepared on forms that include a summary
sheet, detailed worksheet and a graph shee t or by using computer program
accepted by the Royal Commission.
5. Product Data
a) Product data shall include princi pal dimensions, general construction
and material for each item intended to be furnished and installed.
b) Manufacturer's catalog data for all sprinkler heads, alarm check valves
and all other accessories and system components, including but not
limited to:
1) Pipe, Fittings, Accessories and Mechanical Couplings
(a) Temperature-pressure ratings, specifications covering the
character of materials used and ASTM or ASME destination
number.
2) Pipe hangers.
3) Valves.
4) Flow characteristics of automatic valves.

6. Installation Instructions
a) Submit copies of the manufactu rer's installation and maintenance
instructions for the standpipe system accessories used on this Project.
b) Include valve data and servicing instructions.
7. Shop Drawings
a) Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13 and NFPA 15.
b) Complete field detail, shop fabrication and installation drawings of
nozzles and supply piping, including locations of heads, risers, electric
water motor gongs, control valves, showing routing of all piping, location
of hangers, supports, pipe restrain ts, inserts, sleeves, escutcheon
plates, inspector test valve, and other accessories.
c) Such plans shall be clear, legible and drawn to scale.
d) The drawings shall show arrangement, water supply, equipment and all
other details necessary to establish compliance with this standard.SECTION 15340

e) The plans shall also describe all system components.
f) The plans shall include an elevation diagram.
g) Define water service and connection with main supply.
h) Fire department connection details.
i) Show drain locations on fire sprinkler drawings.
j) Submit Coordination Drawings
1) Superimposed drawings showing location of each nozzle and all
other activities simultaneously.
8. As-Built Drawings
a) Clearly indicate nozzles, system s, locations and symbols on the Shop
Drawings and As-built plans.
b) Clearly indicate valves, alarms and controls locations.
c) Identify any variation from Contract Drawings.
9. Maintenance and Operating Instructions
a) Submit data conforming to NFPA 13 for maintenance of sprinklers
system.
b) Equipment manufacturer recommended spare parts and tools list.
c) Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
10. Test Reports
a) Accurately record and report the me thods of testing, times and dates of
the test, witnesses to the test, and the results of the test.
b) Indicate and interpret test re sults for compliance with performance
requirements in NFPA 13.
c) Include Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for aboveground and
underground piping.

11. Welders' Qualification Certificates.


12. Samples
a) Accompanying the above submitta ls, the Contractor shall submit

1.08 QUALITY CONTROL
A. The Contractor shall be responsible fo r the quality of work and shall devel
op and
propose programs and methods of constructi on and testing to achieve the specifi
ed
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with
SECTION 01450.
B. Regulatory Requirements
1. Comply with the Royal Commission Design Criteria.
2. All fire related materials, components, equipment and installation shall be
approved in accordance with the Local Fire Department.
3. Comply with the Saudi Arabian Standards, where applicable and where
updated data are available.
4. NFPA Compliance
a) See pars. 1.01 E and F and par. 1.05 I.
5. OSHA Requirements
a) Fire protection shall comply with OSHA requirements.
C. Certification
1. The Contractor shall prepare and su bmit a set of As-built Drawings and
hydraulic calculations of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins,
and the applicable parts of the Contractor s material and test certificates
covering material and tests certifying that the work has been completed and
tested in accordance with plans and specifications.
D. Products Quality
1. Products shall be free of defects in materials, fabrication, finish and
installation.
2. Any water spray nozzle that incurs damage, is painted, or is sprayed with an
y
obstructive material shall not be accepted.
3. Each item of equipment shall be listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or
approved by Factory Mutual (FM).
4. Each major item of equipment shall bear the manufacturer s name or
trademark; serial number, and UL or FM label.
5. Each item of equipment shall be capa ble of performing its function over an
extended period of time with a minimum of attention and maintenance.
6. All equipment shall be constructed using new materials designs and built in
accordance with the best practices of the industry.SECTION 15340

7. All materials and performance shall meet the appropriate ANSI, ASME and
ASTM Codes, where applicable.
E. Welding
1. Qualify processes and operators acco rding to ASME BPV, Section IX or
AWS B2.1.
2. The Contractor shall maintain certified records of the welding procedures us
ed
and the welders or welding machine operators employed by them.
F. Electrical Work
1. Associated with sprinklers system shall be in accordance with NFPA 70.
G. Fire Alarm System
1. Fire Alarm System shall be in accordance with NFPA 72.

2. Control and fire alarm wiring including connections to fire alarm systems,
shall
be provided under this Section in accordance with NFPA 70.
3. Rigid metal conduit or intermediate metal conduit shall be provided.
1.09 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed
in full
accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by th
e
following:
1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
a) Legislation, Regulatio n, Standards and Codes.
2. Royal Commission Regulations
a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.
3. Contractor
a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal
Commission.
4. Health and Safety Conditions
a) Refer to NFPA 15.
b) Backflow preventers shall be used where potable water could be
contaminated through siphoning or back pressure from fire water piping.
c) Safe welding and cutting practices shall be followed in accordance with
NFPA 51B.SECTION 15340

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall b
e
employed throughout.
1.10 DESIGN CRITERIA
A. Design Objective
1. Systems shall be designed so that extinguishment shall be accomplished and
all protected surfaces shall be cooled to prevent flashback occurring after the
system is shut off.
B. Water spray fixed systems shall be specific ally designed to provide for eff
ective fire
control, extinguishment, prevention, or exposure protection.
C. The design of individual water spray fixed systems can vary considerably, de
pending
on the characteristics and nature of the haz ard, the basic purpose of the spray
ing
system, the hazard, and wind/draft conditions. Because of these variations as we
ll as
the wide range of nozzle spray characteristics, the design of water spray fixed
systems for fire protection must only be performed by experienced and specializ
ed
designers who thoroughly understand the limit ations as well as capabilities of
such
systems.
D. A study shall be made of the physical and chemical properties of the materi
als for
which the water spray protection is being considered to determine the advisabil
ity of
its use.
E. Design water spray fixed systems in accordance with NFPA 15.
F. The Contractor shall coordinate with archit ectural, civil, mechanical, and
electrical,
design and construction documents, to ascertain the required information, to aff
ect a

properly designed fire protection system for the building construction and occup
ancy
classification.
G. The design of fire protection system s shall be complete with all necessary
accessories for proper operation.
H. System design and installation shall refl ect high quality professional work
that
properly accounts for practical maintenance concerns and aesthetic concerns, as
well as meets the design requirements.
I. The system and its components shall be suitably designed to withstand ambien
t
temperature changes, vibration, humidity, impact, clogging and corrosion.
J. Components within the protected spaces shall be designed to withstand the el
evated
temperatures which could occur during a fire.
K. Water discharge from water spray syste ms shall be controlled or contained t
o
prevent the spread of fire where flammable or combustible liquids are present, w
here
applicable.
L. Systems shall be arranged for automatic operation with supplementary manual
tripping means provided, unless otherwise noted.SECTION 15340

M. The piping system shall be sized in accordance with a hydraulic calculation
technique
to ensure availability of flows and pressure s required for correct performance
of the
system.
N. Pressure source components of the system shall be located outside of the pr
otected
areas.
O. Nozzles and piping shall not prevent acce ss to the protected equipment or e
xposure
surface for routine maintenance.
P. Every fire water system, including sect ions of piping, fittings, valves, pu
mps, and
drivers, shall be designed to accommodate the failure of any one system componen
t
so that operation of the major part of the system can be restored with minimum d
own
time. Block valves shall be strategically provided to isolate failed components
.
Q. A means for testing the operation of t he system for assuring the required
pressure
and flow shall be provided.
R. Selection
1. Open water spray nozzles shall be used.
2. Automatic nozzles shall be permitted when positioned and located so as to
provide satisfactory performance with respect to activation time and
distribution.
3. The selection of the type and size of spray nozzles shall be made with prop
er
consideration given to such factors as discharge characteristics, physical
character of the hazard involved, ambient conditions, material likely to be
burning, and the design objectives of the system.
4. Temperature Rating
a) The temperature rating for automat ic nozzles shall be based on the

maximum ambient temperature and determined in accordance with


NFPA 13.
5. All nozzles shall be selected to provide maximum effective spray coverage.
6. Water spray nozzles shall be permitted to be placed in any position, within
its
listing limitations, necessary to obtain proper coverage of the protected area.
7. All component parts shall be select ed and coordinated to provide complete
systems.
S. Nozzles Spacing
1. The nozzles shall be spaced such that the spray patterns shall be overlapped
or at least meet.
2. Nozzle spacing (vertically or horizontally) shall not exceed 3 m (10 ft.).
3. Attention shall be given to the extent to which adjacent objects, up to 1 m
(3 ft.)
away, will obstruct the pattern of coverage by the spray nozzles.SECTION 15340

4. Final design shall either remove the obstruction, reposition the spray nozzl
es
or provide additional spray nozzles
T. System or Main Drain
1. Drain connections shall be sized in accordance to NFPA 15.
U. Automatic Detection Equipment
1. General
a) Detection systems providing an act uation signal to fixed water spray
systems shall be designed in accordance with NFPA 72.
2. Response Time
a) The detection system shall be designed to cause actuation of the
system actuation valve to operate without delay.
b) Where ambient conditions exist that causes false system operations,
detection systems shall be permitte d to include delays that would
override these conditions.
V. Hydraulic Calculations
1. Calculations shall be in accordance with NFPA 13 or NFPA 15 and shall use
an approved computer program calculations such as Elite, Hass or as per
NFPA Standard Format.
1.11 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE
A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units
in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:
1. All products shall be inspected at time of delivery for damage and for
compliance with specifications.
2. All products shall be handled and stored as recommended by the
manufacturer.
3. Materials shall be delivered in their original packages, containers, or bund
les
bearing the brand name and the name of the material.
4. Pipe, fittings, valves, alarm valves, an d spray nozzles shall be stored wit
h
open ends sealed until removed for installation.
5. Materials shall be protected from weather, soil, and damage during delivery,
storage, and construction.
6. Any products that are damaged or found not to be in accordance with the
specifications shall be immediately replaced.SECTION 15340

2.01 GENERAL
A. All goods and products covered by thes e Specifications shall be procured, w

available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and product

B. All products, system components and hardware shall be in compliance with
NFPA 15.
C. Only listed materials and devices shall be used in the installation of water
spray
systems.
D. Components that do not affect system oper ation, such as drain valves and si
gns,
shall not be required to be listed.
E. System components shall be rated for the maximum working pressure to which
they
are exposed, but not less than 12.1 bar (175 psi).
F. Corrosion Protection
1. System components installed outside, or in the presence of a corrosive
atmosphere, shall be constructed of mate rials that will resist corrosion or be
suitably protected from corrosion.
G. All materials and equipment used in the in stallation of the fire protection
systems
shall be new and the latest design by the manufacturer. The equipment, material
s,
valves and other devices installed shall be UL listed or FM approved.
H. All fire department connection, couplin g and thread type shall be fully coo
rdinated
and matched with Local Fire Department requirements. No single thread type or
coupling shall be purchased before confir ming and fulfilling Local Fire Departm
ent
conditions.
2.02 PIPES, JOINTS AND FITTINGS
A. Piping and fittings used in water spray systems shall meet or exceed the
requirements of NFPA 15.
B. The use of standard-weight pipe, fittings and valves shall be confined to p
ressures
less than 12.1 bar (175 psi).
C. Fittings shall be extra-heavy pattern where pressures exceed 12.1 bar (175 p
si).
D. Steel pipe used in manual and open systems shall be galvanized on its inter
nal and
external surfaces.
E. The threaded ends of galvanized pipe shall be protected against corrosion.

2. Dust cover shall be designed for both indoor and outdoor use.
J. Stock of Spare Automatic Water Spray Nozzles and Pilot Sprinklers
1. A supply of automatic water spray nozzles and pilot sprinklers shall be
maintained on the premises so that any automatic water spray nozzles or pilot
sprinklers that have operated or been damaged in any way can be promptly
replaced.
2. The stock of spare automatic water spray nozzles and pilot sprinklers, the t
otal
quantities shall be based on the total number of automatic water spray nozzles
and pilot sprinklers on the property and shall be in accordance to NFPA 15.
3. These automatic water spray nozzles and pilot sprinklers shall correspond to
the types and temperature ratings of the automatic water spray nozzles and
pilot sprinklers on the property.
4. The automatic water spray nozzles and pilot sprinklers shall be kept in a
cabinet where the ambient storage te mperature does not exceed 38C
(100F).
5. Where required by the manufacturer, a special automatic water spray nozzle

and/or pilot sprinkler wrench shall be provided to be used in the removal and
installation of automatic water spray nozzles and pilot sprinklers.
6. Provide a minimum of 2 of each type sprinkler wrenches used.
K. Sprinkler Pilot Head
1. Listed corrosion-proof pilot heads shall be used.
2. The temperature rating of pilot-type sp rinklers shall be selected in accord

B. Detection Systems
1. Automatic detection equipment, release devices and system accessories shall
be listed for the intended use.

NFPA 72.

3.01 GENERAL
A. All products and equipment shall be installed in accordance with the Royal
Commission regulations, the manufacturer's written installation instructions an

applicable codes and standard.
B. Install fixed spray water system in accordance to NFPA 15.

D. Fixed spray systems shall be installed by fully experienced and specialized
parties.
E. Provisions shall be made to facilitate frequent inspection, testing and main

F. Hazardous Locations
1. Components of the electrical portions of water spray systems that are instal

in classified locations as defined in NFPA 70, and shall be listed for such use.
G. Electrical Clearances
1. All system components shall be located so as to maintain minimum electrical
clearances from live parts.
2. The electrical clearances shall be in accordance with NFPA 15.

3.02 CHARACTER OF WORK
A. Refer to SECTION 15055.
3.03 PRE-INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
A. General Examination
1. The Contractor shall inspect all products for damage immediately before
installation.
2. Any products that are damaged or no t in accordance with the Specifications
shall immediately be repaired (minor repairs) or removed from the site and
replaced.

B. Refer to SECTIONS 15051 and 15055.SECTION 15340

3.04 INSTALLATION
A. Water Spray Nozzles
1. Install water spray nozzles in accordance with NFPA 15.
2. Ensure that the nozzle spray patterns shall be met or overlapped.
3. Comply with par. 1.10 (design criteria) for design/installation requirements
.
4. Install water spray nozzles as show n on the Contract Drawings and approved
Shop Drawings and as per the Royal Commission updated Engineering
Manual.
B. Pilot-Type Sprinklers
1. Pilot sprinklers located under a ceiling, shall be positioned in accordance
with
the requirements for automatic sprinklers in NFPA 13.
2. Maximum horizontal spacing for indoor locations shall not exceed 3.7 m
(12 ft.).
3. The horizontal distance between pilot sprinklers installed outdoors shall no
t
exceed 2.5 m (8 ft.).
C. Piping
1. General
a) Installed piping, valves, fittings a nd devices shall meet or exceed the
requirements of NFPA 15 and acceptable to the Royal Commission.
b) Water spray piping shall not be routed across the top of the transformer
tank or across the face of the transformer cabinet.
c) Piping shall be permitted to be rout ed across the top of the transformer
tank or across the face of the transformer cabinet, where impingement
cannot be accomplished with any other configuration and the required
distance from live electrical components is maintained.
d) Use pipe thread sealant compound for threaded piping connections.
e) Refer to SECTION 15055 for general requirements for pipe installation.
f) Install underground piping, in accordance with SECTION 02085.
2. Hanging, Bracing and Restraint of System Piping
a) System piping shall be supported to maintain its integrity under fire
conditions.
b) Piping shall be supported from steel or concrete structural members or
pipe stands.SECTION 15340

c) Piping shall be supported and braced to restrict movement due to nozzle
reaction and water surges so that system performance and integrity
shall be maintained.
d) Piping shall be hung with hanger s and supports independent of any
other hangers, support systems or devices.
e) Non-related materials shall not be suspended from or attached to
sprinkler piping or components.
f) Do not mix piping material and hanger material of dissimilar metals.
g) Hangers shall be installed and located in accordance with NFPA 13
and NFPA 15.
h) Where the pipe support methods outlined in NFPA 15 or NFPA 13,
cannot be used, water spray system piping shall be supported in such a
manner equivalent to the performance requirements of NFPA 15 or
NFPA 13 and approved by the Royal Commission.
3. Valves
a) Control Valves
1) Water Supply Control Valves

(a) Each system shall be provided with a control valve located


so as to be accessible during a fire in the area where the
system protects, or any adjacent areas.
2) Deluge valves shall be accessible from grade and shall otherwise
meet the access requirements of NFPA 15.
3) Location of System Actuation Valves
(a) System actuation valves shall be as close to the hazard
protected as accessibility during the emergency will permit.
b) Supervision
1) Valve Supervision
(a) Valves controlling the water supply to water spray systems
shall be supervised open.
2) Supervise valves on connections to water supplies, sectional
control and isolation valves, and other valves in supply pipes to
nozzles, fire pump control and other fixed water-based fire
suppression systems in accordance to NFPA 13.
c) Check Valves
1) Install a check valve where there shall be more than one source
of water supply, in each connection.
d) Backflow Prevention
1) Install a listed backflow prevention device where potable water
shall be subjected to contamination when connected with fireSECTION 15340

water piping.
4. Pipe Sleeves
a) Sleeves shall be provided where piping passes through walls, floors,
roofs, beams and partitions.
b) Sleeves shall be secured in proper position and location.
c) Sleeves shall be of sufficient lengt h to pass through entire thickness of
walls, floors, roofs and partitions.
d) Size and install so that system pipes are not stressed.
e) Sleeves shall be installed prior to construction of walls or pouring of
concrete.
f) Sleeves for underground pipe shall have mechanical rubber seals and
be watertight.
g) Refer to SECTION 15055.
5. Pressure Gage
a) Provide a pressure gage at each fl ow alarm switch location, above and
below alarm check valves, at the top of each sprinkler or standpipe riser,
on the air or water supply to pilot lines, at each main drain connection,
on the suction and discharge of the fire pump and where required.
b) Pressure gages shall be installed so as to permit removal.
c) At least one gage connection shall be provided at or near the nozzle
calculated as having the least pressure under normal flow conditions, on
each separate section of the system.
6. Strainers
a) Main pipeline strainers shall be provided for all systems utilizing nozzles
with waterways less than 10 mm ( 3/8 in.) and for any system where the
water is likely to contain obstructive material.
b) Individual or integral strainers s hall be provided at each nozzle where
waterways smaller than 3.2 mm (1/8 in.) are used.
c) Mainline pipeline strainers shall be installed so as to be accessible for
flushing or cleaning.
7. Drainage
a) System or Main Drain Connections
1) Each system shall be provided wi th drain connections for system
risers, mains and actuation valves.SECTION 15340

b) Auxiliary Drains
1) Auxiliary drains shall be provided where a change in piping
direction prevents drainage of sy stem piping through either the
main drain valve or open water spray nozzles.
c) Means shall be provided to verify water flow through the drain.
d) Drains shall discharge to a safe location, and drain valves shall be
accessible.
e) Do not make direct interconnections between sprinkler drains and
sewers.
f) The drain discharge shall conform to health or water regulations.
g) Main drain valves and auxiliary valv es shall be insta lled in accordance
with NFPA 15.
D. Inspector Test Connection
1. Install test connections sized and located in accordance with NFPA 13.
2. They shall be so installed that the valve can be opened wide for a sufficien
t
time to assure a proper test without causing water damage.
3. The test connection valve shall be readily accessible.
4. Sight glass for inspector's test drain and drain valve in accordance with
NFPA 13 shall be provided, when requested by the Royal Commission.
E. Fire Department Connection
1. Install, locate, arrange and size fire department connection as specified in
NFPA 13.
2. Install fire department connection in an area accessible for the first resp
onse
unit.
3. Connections shall be readily visible and accessible. They shall not be
obstructed by vegetation or equipment.
4. Do not provide any isolation valves with fire department connection piping.
5. Install a listed check valve in each fire department connection.
6. The fire department connection shall be on the system side of the water supp
ly
check valve.
7. Support fire department connections properly.
8. Install mechanical sleeve seal at pipe penetration in outside walls.
9. Install automatic drip valves at the check valve on the fire departmentSECT

connection to the mains.
10. Rotate all valves and fittings for fire depa rtment connections approxima
tely
22 down from vertical to facilitate easy hose connection, where possible.
F. Alarms, Waterflow and Controls
1. All automatic water spray systems shall be provided with a local alarm.
2. Any flow from a single automatic nozzle of the smallest orifice size install
ed on
the system or flow from any group of non- automatic nozzles, shall result in an
audible alarm on the premises within 90 seconds after flow begins.
3. Where a separate detection system is used to activate the water spray system
,
the alarm shall be actuated independently of system water flow to indicate
operation of the detection system.
4. All alarm apparatus shall be located and installed such that all parts are
accessible for inspection, removal, and repair and shall be adequately
supported.

5. Waterflow alarms shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 13.


6. Electrically operated alarm attachments shall be installed in accordance wit
h
NFPA 72.
7. The selection, location, and spacing of automatic fire detectors for the
actuation of fixed water spray system s shall meet or exceed the applicable
requirements of NFPA 72.
8. Locate the detectors in such a way to promptly respond to a fire, flammable
gas release or other fire condition.
9. Locate the detectors in such a way that no portion of the hazard being
protected extends beyond the perimeter line of detectors.
10. The detection system shall be capable of detecting a fire up to the elevati
on of
the highest level of protected equipment surface.
11. Detectors shall be supported independent ly of their attachment to wires or
tubing.
12. Remote Manual Actuation
a) At least one manual actuation device independent of the manual
actuation device at the system actuat ion valve shall be installed for all
automatic systems.
b) Remote manual actuation devices shall be located so as to be
accessible during an emergency.
13. Flammable Gas Detectors
a) The location of flammable gas detectors shall take into consideration theSEC

density of the flammable gas and its temperature and proximity to
equipment where leakage is more likely to occur.
b) Access for testing, calibrati on and maintenance of flammable gas
detectors shall be provided.
14. Arrangement and Supervision of Systems
a) Electrical Systems
1) Water spray systems that depend on electric thermostats, relay
circuits, flammable gas detectors, or other similar equipment shall
be so arranged that such equipment is normally energized or
completely supervised in a manner that will result in positive
notifications on an abnormal condition in accordance with
NFPA 72
2) Supervision shall include, but not be limited to the tripping device,
solenoid valve and any connecting wiring.
b) Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems
1) Hydraulically and pneumatica lly operated systems shall be
supervised in a manner such that failure will result in positive
notification of the abnormal condition, unless otherwise noted.
3.05 APPLICATION
A. Piping
1. Do not extend water supply connection into a building or through a building
wall unless such connection is under the control of an outside listed indicating
valve or an inside listed indicating valve located near the outside wall of the
building.
2. Copper Pipe Application Limitations
a) Copper pipe for fire protection applications shall not be located in or
routed through cargo or vehicle decks, machinery spaces containing
boilers, combustion engines, pressurized fuel or lubricating line; or
storage spaces for combustible liquids or gasses under pressure.
3. Refer to SECTION 15055, for general piping application.

B. Fire-Protection-Service Valves
1. UL listed and FM approved for applications where required by NFPA 13.
2. Shutoff Duty
a) Use gate valves.

4. Waterflow Alarm Devices Attachments
a) Electrically operated alarm attachments shall form a part of an auxiliary,
central station, local protective, prop rietary, or remote station signaling
system shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 72.
3.06 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Accessibility
1. Control Valve Accessibility
a) All control valves shall be locate d where readily accessible and free of
obstructions.
2. Access and signage shall be obvious.
B. Coordination
1. Coordinate the location, signage, keying and access of fixed spray nozzles
shutoff and zone valves with the Royal Commission.
2. Coordinate work among the trades to avoid any interference with the
effectiveness of the fire protection system.
3. Coordinate location of drains show n on plumbing drawings with requirements
of fire sprinkler system.
C. Visibility
1. Shall not be blocked by equipment.
D. Refer to SECTION 15055.
3.07 AFTER INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
A. Painting
1. Unless applied by the manufacturer, spray nozzles shall not be painted.
2. Piping Painting
a) Refer to SECTIONS 15055, 09910 and 09970.
B. Signs and Identifications
1. Remote manual actuation devices shall be identified with a permanently
marked weatherproof metal sign identifying the system(s) controlled.
2. Provide identification signs for all system and water supply control valves
,
sectional valves, riser control valves, drain valves, test and drain connections

and alarm devices with securely attached identification signs in accordance
with NFPA 15.
3. Provide identification signs at each va lve to indicate its function and wha
t it
controls.
4. Provide hydraulic design information signage as required by NFPA 13.
5. Each fire department connection to sprinkler systems shall be designated by
a
sign having raised or engraved letters at least 25 mm (1 in.) in height on plate
or fitting reading service design.
C. Protection of Water Spray Nozzles
1. Automatic water spray nozzles subject to mechanical damage shall be
protected with listed guards.
D. Protection of Piping Against Damage
1. Protect piping as per NFPA 13 and NFPA 15.
2. Protect all equipment materials at all times.

3. Close pipe openings with caps or plugs during installation.


4. Cover and protect equipment materials from dirt, water, chemical or
mechanical damage.
E. Protection of Piping against Corrosion
1. Use corrosion-resistant types of pi pe, fittings, and hangers or protective
corrosion-resistant coatings, where corrosive conditions exist or piping shall b
e
exposed to the weather.
2. Underground steel pipe shall be protected against corrosion.
F. Protection of Alarms and Automatic Detection Equipment
1. Mechanical Damage
a) Detection equipment shall be located so as to be protected from
mechanical damage.
2. Corrosion Protection
a) Detection equipment installed outd oors or in the presence of possible
corrosive vapors or atmospheres sh all be protected from corrosion by
suitable materials of construction or by suitable protection coatings
applied by the equipment manufacturer.
3. Protective Canopy
a) Detection equipment requiring pr otection from the weather shall beSECTION 1

provided with a canopy, hood or other suitable protection.
3.08 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Test water spray fixed systems according to NFPA 15.
B. Each spray system shall be required to pass a performance test, witnessed by
the
Royal Commission s representative; and Local Fire Department when required.
C. Remove and replace malfunctioning units and retest as specified above.
D. Report test results to the Royal Commission.
E. Refer to SECTION 15055.
3.09 START-UP AND INITIAL OPERATION
A. Pipe Cleaning and Flushing
1. Supply Piping
a) Underground mains and lead-in connections to system risers shall be
flushed thoroughly before connection is made to system piping.
2. The minimum flow rate shall be at least that necessary to provide a velocity
of
3 m/s (10 ft/s).
3. Provide all necessary connections, va lves, oversized flushing connections,
pumps, water, chemicals etc. as r equired to properly clean and test the
system.
4. Start flushing at the highest point in the system to lowest drain point.
5. Corrosive Chemicals
a) Additives and corrosive chemicals, sodium silicate or derivatives of
sodium silicate, brine or other corrosive chemicals shall not be used for
testing systems or stopping leaks.
6. All portions of the system shall be backflushed.
7. Flushing of piping shall be as per NFPA 15.
8. Clean exterior of pipe prior to painting.
3.10 TESTING
A. General
1. Water spray fixed systems for fire pr otection shall be inspected by a quali
fiedSECTION 15340

Inspection Service.

2. All tests shall be witnessed by the Royal Commission s representative.


3. Defective Joints
a) All leaking joints shall be comp leted, disassembled and remade using
new materials.
4. Test Source
a) The test source shall be isolat ed before conducting pressure tests.
Each control valve shall be opened and closed while under pressure to
assume proper operation.
B. Certification
1. See par. 1.08 C.
C. Hydrostatic Pressure Tests
1. All system piping shall be hydrostati cally tested in accordance with the
provisions of NFPA 13.
2. Hydrostatic testing shall be completed prior to spray nozzle installation.
Install
plugs in place of spray nozzles for test purposes only.
3. Provide piping and valving as necessary to facilitate full flow testing.
4. Fire Department Connection
a) Piping between the check valve in the fire department inlet pipe and the
outside connection shall be tested in the same manner as the balance of
the system.
D. Operating Tests
1. Performance
a) Operation tests shall be conduct ed to ensure that the water spray
systems will respond as designed, both automatically and manually.
2. Response Time
a) Under test conditions, the heat detection system, where exposed to a
heat source or pilot sprinkler line test valve opened, shall operate the
system actuation valve within 40 seconds.
E. Discharge Tests on Systems with Open Nozzles
1. The water discharge patterns from all of the spray nozzles shall be observe
d
and verified in accordance with NFPA 15.SECTION 15340

F. Manual Operation
1. Each manual actuation device shall be tested.
G. Deluge System
1. The automatic operation of a deluge or preaction valve shall be tested in
accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
H. Alarm and Supervision Tests
1. Each alarm and supervisory device pr ovided shall be tested in accordance
with NFPA 72.
I. Hose Threads Test
1. All hose connection and fire department connection threads shall be tested t
o
verify their compatibility with threads used by the Local Fire Department.
2. The test shall consist of threading coupling samples, caps, or plugs onto th
e
installed devices.
J. Retest
1. Any or all of the system component or portion which fail the specified test
s
shall be retested after corrective measures have been taken.
