Experimental design
A. Topic
- Factors affecting the heart rate.
B.
- Objectives: My objective is to learn better how to make a good experiment,
recognizing well the variables and make a good planification
- Introduction: In this work, I will write the steps of the scientific method until
planification (Variables, hypothesis, question, etc.).
C. Question
- How the exercise affects the heart rate?
D. Hypothesis
- If someone exercise one minute, then the heart rate will increase
E. Variables
- Independent or manipulated: Exercise
- Dependent or responding: Heart rate
- Controlled or identifying: genre, person, kind of measurement
F. Materials and equipment
- Timer
- A person to experiment her.
- Stethoscope
G. Experimental design
- To establish the relationship between the exercise and the heart rate, the heart rate
will be measured in one minute before and after the exercise.
- In order to do the above-mentioned experiment, first, I will measure my normal
heart rate in one minute and I will write it in a paper.
- Then I will do exercise (independent variable) one minute and after of that I will
measure my heart rate (dependent variable) in one minute and write it on a paper.
- I will repeat the experiment and obtain the average of the results, and that results
will be used to the next steps of the scientific method.

Exercise affecting heart rate (average)

Heart Rate per minute

Heart rate (per minute) after one

minute of exercise

1.

Interpret your data and explain your results through a scientific reasoning.

1.1 When you finish making your tables and graphs, interpret them, indicating:
a. Which are the maximum and minimum values? Why?
- The maximum is the second time-after exercise heart rate (106), because maybe
after the first one, the person was a little bit stirred, so it can affect; and the
minimum was the normal heart rate in the first time (74), because the person was
without many movements, she was normal.
b. What is the average?
- The average, as I put in the chart is 75 for normal heart rate and 104 for afterexercise heart rate.
c. If there is an isolated datum, why did you get it?
- There is no any isolated datum because everything is in the graph and the chart.

d. Compare your data with your independent variable.

All the data I got is because the independent variable, thats why I put in the chart
and in the graph After exercise.
e. Is there any relationship between the independent and dependent variable?
Yes, because if we see my experiment, when someone exercise (independent variable)
the heart rate (dependent variable) increases.

2. Evaluate the validity of your hypothesis according the result obtained from the scientific
research.

2.1 Students should read their design again to verify their hypothesis, and state if it is
true or false, according to the collected data.
My hypothesis is valid because I said if someone exercise the heart rate increases and
thats true according to my experiment and to the data I put in graphs.
3. Test your research method and following the next recommendations.
3.1 Check the procedure related to:
a. See if the graph applied is useful to interpret or analyze data.
Yes, is useful because in one you can see all the result and in the other the average.
b. How many repetitions are needed for the research?
I make two repetitions to guarantee if my hypothesis was right, because it is not much
dependable with only one.
c. The errors made when applying the measuring instruments. Do not forget to know in
detail how to use them.
I think my experiment was very accurate because I used a stethoscope that is an
instrument for measuring heart rate, but perhaps, because I am not a doctor I probably
make very few mistakes that can affect a little bit.
d. Do not forget to add some questions or any other material to prove the investigation.
4. Explain new ways to apply the research method.
4.1 When writing your conclusions, add your results, explain your method, and describe any
problem you found when making the research to give some suggestions or modify the
method you applied in the investigation.
Finally, I conclude that the scientific research is a very good process to prove something,
such as me that I had to prove something about heart rate and following all of that method
I can finish learning something. I am satisfied with my results and with this project.
5.

*Inquiry to support my hypothesis

When you exercise, your cells increase their metabolic rate, and therefore increases oxygen
demand. Blood is what carries oxygen to your cells, and your heart has to beat faster to
deliver more oxygen. That is why your breathing also accelerates.
