For treatment anywhere grease/fat is a problem. Continuous addition optimises results. GelPac
technology involves immobilising bacteria in a slow-release gel. When a GelPac is added to water,

is often added daily, GelPacs are generally replaced once per month or per week..

The BIOAmp is a pre-treatment system that produces a concentrated bacterial product, which can be
applied to existing wastewater systems to improve efficiency. The unit is a controlled self-contained,
microbial growth system. This revolutionary system delivers 31 trillion live, vegetative Pseudomonas
and Bacillus bacterial cells every 24 hours at one-tenth the cost of commercially available dry powder
or liquid bacterial formulations. That is the daily equivalent of five 55-gallon drums of readily available
liquid bacterial products or one pail (25 lbs) of dry bacterial product.
By automatically fermenting bacteria onsite, the BioAmp is able to drastically reduce the cost of
biological treatments. This automated system requires no client operator time or attention; all systems
are installed, monitored, and serviced by an ECO Bionics technician.

The separated layer from the grease trap is treated with a biomatic bacteria that permanently
converts the grease into an environmentally safe solution that wont re-solidify downstream.

All KESSEL grease separators function using the gravity principle. Wastewater containing grease and
cooking oils enters the separator through a inlet calming device so as not to interfere with the
separations process. Inside the chamber, heavier sludges settle to the bottom while lighter oils and
grease rise to the surface of the separator. The cleansed wastewater then exits the separator and
flows into a public or private sewer system. The collected sludge and grease should be disposed of
monthly by a licensed disposal company. During disposal, the entire contents of the separator are
pumped into a waiting disposal truck and finally the empty grease separator is refilled with fresh water
and placed back into operation.

The Kitchen Biomass Grease Trap (above-ground installation) is designed for installation inside your
building, it has a smooth, clean, hygienic grey GRP exterior. It can be installed on the floor close to
the sinks or anywhere else convenient to the waste pipes. The standard above-ground units are
supplied complete with an Automatic Biofluid dosing pump and 25 litres of Biofluid (enough to last 5-6
months) There is also an economy range with a Biosock instead of the dosing pump and fluid. All
units are supplied with multi-fit 50mm Osma waste connections.
This range of grease trap is for installation externally, below ground and connected to standard
drainage pipes. Sizes are normally determined by the number of meals per day that the restaurant
Underground Biomass caters for. All units are fitted with 110mm uPVC drainage connections but can be fitted with 160mm

fittings if requested at time of order.
Lamina Filtertraps
The very high quality of grease and oil separation from these units (better than 25 parts oil per million
parts water). Apart from ensuring that the separation levels are un-surpassed, considerable thought
has been given to the maintenance aspects of the Lamina Filtertrap. With all but the very smallest
size, a mechanical lifting hoist is supplied. This allows the large capacity grease collection trays to be
lifted and suspended above ground level where the valve on the side of the tray can be opened to
allow the oil/grease to drain into a suitable waste container.
If a Garbage Grinder is to be installed in the kitchen, we recommend that the waste from it be run to
enter the drains down stream of the Filtertrap. Alternatively, one size larger Filtertrap may be
specified.

capacity is increased considerably in this range. A Sediment separator is included for installation
upstream of the main Filtertrap. If a Garbage Grinder (Macerator) is to be used, increase the size of
Filtertrap by one model or direct the waste from the Grinder down stream of the Filtertrap.

Oil Water Separator
Our separators have been independently tested by B.S.IHemel Hempstead, England; L.G.A.
Wurzberg, Germany and C.S.T.B. Nantes, France, the major separator test facilities in Europe. The
EN858 test simulates a rain storm with oil being mixed turbulently into the water before entering the
separator. The outflow from the separator must contain less than 5 parts oil per million part water.
Separators which achieve this standard can normally be placed so that the output flows directly to
streams, lakes and rivers without polluting them. All our separators are approved by the U.K.
Environment Agency and the British Standards Institute.
Poly Trap grease traps can be installed above ground sitting on the floor, or flush to the floor in
concrete. The units are produced in a variety of sizes to satisfy virtually all requirements. Custom
units available up to 300 gpm.
Poly grease traps and grease interceptors are designed and engineered with a specially compounded
material that out performs other plastic materials and steel units in most severe applications

The APF-Cleaner system is designed to control the pump so that it will operate down to the lowest
possible water level in the sump, i.e. down to the level at which air is drawn into the impeller. The
pump will then be able to pump away the grease and dirt that normally always remain on the water
surface. The action of entraining air at low operating depths, also promotes a high level of turbulence
for a short period of the end of the pumping cycle. The turbulence will stir up some of the dirt and
grease that normally collect on the sump floor, and these pollutants will then also be pumped away.
The removal of both floating and settled solids during pumping reduces routine maintenance and
sump cleaning, such as sparging and desludging, and significantly improved pump reliability.

The JFC GT01 Grease trap has a capacity of 40litres which mades this trap ideal for dwelling houses.
When the wastewater enters the grease trap, the grease rises to the top and eventually solidifies to
form a hard layer at the surface. The heavier waste solids are deposited in the perforated filtering
bucket, which sits firmly at the bottom of the grease trap chamber.After the wastewater passes
through the filtering bucket it then exits the grease trap through an outlet pipe and continues through
the drainage system. When necessary the filtering bucket can be removed and the grease and
trapped solids can be properly disposed of.

The JFC GT02 Grease trap has a capacity of 200 litres which made this trap ideal for restaurants,
bars, service station,hotels, fast food outlets etc.
This trap consists of three Chambers:
1. Inlet Chamber: The wastewater flows into the inlet chamber where
the heavier waste solids are retained in the perforated filtering bucket. At this stage some grease may
solidify and rise to the top to form a layer of sludge. There is a baffle to retain any un-trapped solids in
this chamber.
2. Settlement Chamber: The wastewater flows under gravity from the inlet chamber into this chamber.
The settlement chamber acts as a buffer zone where the wastewater will circulate by natural currents
to cool the remaining grease. Then the wastewater flows forward into the outlet chamber.
3. Outlet Chamber: This chamber collects the remaining grease from the wastewater and retains it in
the perforated filtering bucket. The wastewater flows under gravity through the outlet. Again there is a
baffle to retain any un-trapped solids in this chamber.

The Depth Charge is a mixing system that re-suspends floating solids such as fats, oils, and grease
as well as settled solids within a pump station wet well allowing the pumps to remove them. Because
this mixing occurs during every pumping cycle, the solids are kept to a manageable size preventing
any repetitive clogging problems normally associated with pump stations with large amounts of solids.
This mixing is accomplished using a small volume of high pressure air injected immediately before
the pump is energized. This air creates sufficient turbulence within the wet well to mix in the solids
and then exit the water prior to energizing the pumps. The pump is then energized removing the resuspended solids. The entire cycle occurs automatically with no moving parts being added to the wet
well.

Without biological teratment the trap was cleaned every two weeks. Once
the biological dosing was initiated, the maintenance interval was extended
to 6-8 weeks.
Guidance documents were issued to highlight the importance of good
kitchen practices and to reduce the amount of food waste discharged via the
sink.
An initial CCTV survey was carried out which showed a heavy build up of
FOG in the drain/sewer.
The public sewer at rear of the row of properties regularly blocks with FOG,
causing lack of toilet use and internal flooding at the properties. The sewer
has a flat gradient which exacerbates the problems caused by FOG
discharges from local catering premises. A Chinese takeaway is thought to
be the main source of FOG. It is believed that the premise has general bad
practices relating to the disposal of waste fats and oils, and it is thought that
these are disposed of directly via a manhole outside their property. The
sewer was cleaned prior to installation, therefore the product was acting to
prevent FOG accumulation. A single Alubio L block (a specialised slow
dissolve block which attacks fats, oils and grease) was suspended inside
the manhole in the wastewater flow.
Results
Feedback from the properietors was positive
regarding the kitchen practice and grease trap
maintenance guidance sheets.
The BioBlock performed quite well. Although it did

not keep the pipework clean, the (reported)
blockage rate was greatly reduced. The FOG that
did build up in the pipework appeared to be softer
in texture and may have been more easily
removed using high pressure jetting.
The amount of fat being discharged at this location
appears to be greater than first thought, therefore
it was difficult to determine the effectiveness of the
product at this location.

FOG entering the works affects the primary settlement tanks
causing blockages and forming excessive deposits on the
surface of the tanks. Daily removal of FOG from tanks
requires 4 man-hours of time. The sludge line from the
primary tanks is jetted to remove FOG accumulation every 3
months, a 2-days job for a jetter and tanker.
FOG deposits cause problems throughout the treatment

process, particularly within the sludge thickening tanks and
pipework, causing blockages and valve failure.
The system was installed at the inlet to the treatment works
and is still in operation.

A pumping station with low flows, and a large FOG problem.
The size of the rising main coupled with the low flows meant
that it could take up to four days for the sewage to reach the
end of the rising main. This lead to odour complaints from
the gravity sewer section beyond the rising main, and
problems with corrosion both on the rising main and the
gravity section following it.
Sites suffered from either odour or FOG problems. Biotreat
was dosed into the wet well of each the pumping station or
straight into the sewer via manholes.
Results
The FOG build up at the treatment works is still significant,
however, the deposits are softer and easier to remove.
The system has continued to be in operation,since the trial in
2003.
The way the system is operated at this site is not as the
suppliers would recommend, hence the results obtained during
this trial may not be as good as is possible with this system.
A reduction in the thickness of the fat deposits on the inlet

channel walls was noted.
The frequency that the sludge thickener pipework is jetted has
been reduced from monthly to 3 monthly intervals.
Changes in operational and maintenance tasks at the works
have also helped to reduce costs.
No results included in the report
Biotreat was dosed into the wet well of the pumping station, and
according to the contractors, turned the thick, hard, black crust
of FOG to a much thinner, softer layer. Odour complaints at this
site have also stopped since the start of the dosing.
Evidence suggests that there have been no subsequent odour

complaints, and the FOG problem is much reduced at all sites.

The pumping station has a long history of heavy FOG
accumulation, which forms into a thick crust affecting the
operation of the floats, pumps and other monitoring
equipment.
Regular wet well cleaning and tankering of the contents
was the only way to deal with the problem.
Prior to the trial the pumping station wet wall had a 4-6
month old, solid dry crust approx 300mm thick. The
volume of this crust was estimated to be 3.6m3.
Results
Upon application of the solution the surface of the crust the
sewer system operators noted that the crust appeared to visibly
break down almost immediately.
Estimates indicate that around 65% of the crust was removed by
microbial action or broken up sufficiently to pass through the wet
well without causing problems.
One week after the initial application the remaining FOG crust

Results
At the end of the trial there was little evidence of any
FOG crust. The product worked well and kept the fats
and grease in watery condition.
It was noted that the fats and greases entering the wet
well actually helped to bind the rags and paper
components together.
The rags and other debris present in the wet well during
the trial severely inhibited the bacterial action of the
product.
The product is not designed to work on the inorganic
debris in the wastewater.
Unfortunately due to the break down of the pumping
machinery the trial had to be terminated early. However,
the results showed that the FOG crust had been
reduced so that it only covered approximately 5% of the
surface of the wet well.
Application of the product softened and reduced the

volume of the fats and grease layer so that the wet well
could be emptied easily.
The trial demonstrated that this product dealt with the
large volumes of fats and grease entering in the
wastewater very well.
The product did not remove the FOG entirely, but did
keep it pliable and the fat was therefore much easier to
remove.

The upstream catchment has a population of approximately 500. A
conference centre in the catchment significantly affects the load on
the treatment works as it can cater for around 300 people each day.
The high FOG load in the wastewater causes the formation of a crust
on the primary settlement tank; rising sludge and solids carry over
from the primary settlement tank and blocking of the filter arms.
Prior to the start of the trial, the affected areas of the treatment works
were jetted clean of all FOG accumulation.
The Bio-Sock was suspended in the inlet channel to the primary
settlement tanks.
The sewers at this location are cleaned on an annual basis, typically

during a week at the end of the summer period (holiday season).
A 1 month trial was carried out in the late 1980's at a pumping station
with known FOG problems
Results
The results of using this system are difficult to determine
due to the variable FOG load in the incoming wastewater.
However:
a reduction in fat build up on the primary settlement
tanks was noted.
FOG deposits that remained were softer and easier to
remove,
The fat was broken down into smaller particles that
were able to pass through the filter arms without causing
blockages, and
an improvement in the performance of the treatment
was noted.
Bi-Chem 2000 GL Bio-Sock has been used since August
2004.
The Bio Socks were used here, but they proved to be

expensive, one week's hire of a vactor machine was
cheaper than the product dosing. The product dosing did
not remove all the FOG.
At the end of the trial period it was noted that there had
been a reduction in the amount surface grease scum on
wet well walls, and the numbers of fat blockages in
pumps had been reduced. Therefore the cleaning
frequency of the wet well could be reduced.
Despite good results for this trial, the long-term use of
Bio-Socks was not adopted at this site.

The pumping station serves a petrol station, burger restaurant
and 20 residential properties.
The pumping station had a history of heavy fat build up which
required a high number of reactive site visits to rectify operational
problems.
Prior to star of a 6 month trial a thick crust of FOG covered the
surface of the wet well.
A 450mm sewer suffered from recurring FOG related blockages,

which lead to flooding of a nearby car park. Access to site for
sewer jetting machines is difficult.
Historically there was a problem with FOG build up at the
pumping station and in the sewer leading to the pumping station.
A factory producing food products discharges into the sewer,
which is believed to be the cause of the problem. The factory has
an on site treatment works which treats the discharge from the
factory prior to discharge to the public sewer.
The product was installed to dose into the sewer and at the
pumping station. It was applied using a spray gun. Dosing
continued for the duration of the 6 month trial.
Over the past ten years this road has had many FOG related
issues. These are largely thought to be due to the high
concentration of food catering outlets. There have been odour
complaints, sewer blockages, sewer flooding incidents, many
reports of rats and the loss of the use of toilets.
Environmental Biotech GES system was installed in the kitchens
of 8 food catering premises for a year long trial.
It should be noted that other FOG management systems/devices
were installed at a number of the other premises in the road.
Guidance documents were issued to highlight the importance of
good kitchen practices and to reduce the amount of food waste
discharged via the sink.
Results
After 1 month of dosing the crust turned a foam consistency.
After 2 months of dosing no FOG was obvious on the chamber
walls and the remaining fat in the wet well had formed small balls.
After 3 months of dosing very little fat was evident and the
chamber walls and pump bodies were free of FOG accumulation.
The GES system has now been in place for approximately 3
years and continues to operate effectively to prevent the build up
of FOG.

The sewer was still blocked with FOG at the end of the trial.
The FOG at the pumping station changed during the trial period
from a lumpy texture to a soft mousse, however, this still caused
problems at the pumping station. Environmental Biotech
suggested that the design of the pumping station and that fact
that fat built up on the rags present in the pumping station, had
meant that the FOG had not been completely removed.
During the trial period it was noted that there were no odour
issues and there was a significant reduction in the numbers of
rats at this Town Centre location. There were also no reported
sewer blockages or flooding incidents in the local drain/sewer
system. This trial significantly reduced the amount of FOG being
discharged to the local drain/sewer system.

A large supermarket with a hot food delicatessen, bakery and butcher
had 4 existing Grease Guardian units. Although these units were
installed, blockages were still occurring in the downstream sewer
approximately once per year. Blockage crews noted significant volumes

Maintenance practices of the Grease Guardian units were subsequently
examined. It was found that the supermarket staff were carrying out daily
maintenance on the units, however, they were unsure how the waste
should be disposed of and so it was tipped down a surface water gully at
the side of the building.
The manufacturers of the Grease Guardian units noted that these
systems are approximately 10 years old and records show they were
long overdue a service. The manufacturers examined the units and a
report shows that 3 of the 4 units were in good working order, the fourth
unit had a broken heating element, which was subsequently replaced.
Further investigations indicated that a sink, adjacent to the fourth unit,
was not plumbed into the unit. It was suggested that this may
have been the cause of the FOG build up downstream.

This location was a small but busy takeaway. Investigations at this site
showed that there was an adequately sized external grease separator
already installed. It was located in a suitable position and was cleaned
by hand twice per week by an in-house employee; this included the
use of a degreaser.
The owner stated that the waste from the units was collected by a
used cooking oil collection company, however, details could not be
provided.
The investigations highlighted that a washing machine was plumbed
into the grease separator. The detergents and hot water from the
washing machine would be quite detrimental to the performance of the
separator
via the sink.
This site is a convenience shop with a hot food delicatessen.

Investigations at this site found that a grease separator installed
underground in the back yard of the premises. This unit was a
domestic JFC model, which was greatly undersized for the amount of
FOG being discharged.
An initial CCTV survey showed a significant build up of FOG on the
walls of the pipework downstream of the separator. There was also
some structural damage to the pipework which may have exacerbated
the problem. The site experienced blockages on two or three
occasions over the past 6/7 years.
A new grease separator, JFC 200 litre GT02 model, was subsequently
installed downstream of the existing grease separator.
Once the new grease separator was installed, the pipework was
thoroughly cleaned by a jetting crew and another CCTV survey was
carried out.
Following advice from the manufacturer maintenance of the unit was
conducted at an interval of 2 weeks.

Results
The unit appeared to performing adequately and no
odour problems were experienced during the trial
period.
It was recommended that the use of the degreaser
to "clean" inside the unit was stopped. Use of small
amounts of degreaser to clean around the unit once
closed could continue.
It was recommended that the washing machine was
disconnected from the grease separator.
Although it was intended to maintain the separator

as per manufacturer's recommendations, this
proved difficult for various reasons. On several
occasions, when the project technician arrived at
the site to clean the separator, deliveries were
being made and in this case cleaning had to be
postponed. However, it is likely to be the case in
reality and showed the sensitivity of the system to
perform outside of the normal maintenance interval.

Results

The units were not successful in terms of preventing FOG build
up in the public sewer. However, the following factors should
be considered:

not all the restaurants in the catchment were fitted with the
units, and
low rainfall during the trial period.

When first approached to take part in the trial, the proprietor was surprised
that they had been described as a FOG hotspot and could not recall ever
having considerable problems with their drains.
Despite an initial CCTV survey showed a build up of FOG in the drain. In a
later CCTV survey, structural problems were discovered in the clay pipe
downstream of the shop which may have contributed to the build up of
FOG.
Investigations found that it would be difficult to install a single unit due to
the lacke of external space and the arrangement of the pipework. Suitable
locations were found for three separate Miskin Interceptor units.
The first unit catered for a sink used to rinse fish in the front of the shop.
The second served a large double sink in the kitchen used for pot wash
etc., and
The third catered solely for a combination oven used to cook fish.
The Town Centre has a history of FOG problems (sewer blockages and
associated sewer flooding), partly due to the high concentration of
restaurants in the town centre.
17 Miskin grease separators were been installed in the kitchens of 16
commercial catering premises for a 6 month trial. The grease separators
were installed to take the wastewater from sinks in the premises.
The units were removed and emptied by Miskin on a fortnightly basis.

The food catering outlet selected was alleged to be the cause of known
problems of repeat blockages and internal flooding incidents from a
manhole in the kitchen extension of a property, both thought to be caused
by the accumulation of FOG in the local sewer system.
The location is well known to the local Environmental Health Officer (EHO)
who attributes the previous incidents to FOG being discharged from a
neighbouring Chinese takeaway, as this is the only likely significant source
of FOG discharging to the affected section of sewer.
A 6 month trial used two Miskin Interceptor units installed at the kitchen,
one internally and one externally.

Results
In the latter stages of the trials three flooding incidents occurred
at the trial site. In each case a blockage had occurred
downstream of the premise.
On the first occasion the jetting crew noted blue paper hand
towel in the sewer along with a slight FOG built up on the walls
of the manhole. The use of blue paper hand towel was
subsequently stopped.
A second incident occurred within two weeks of the first
incident. On this occasion it was presumed that the FOG in the
pipework was the cause of the blockage. However, a follow up
CCTV survey discovered serious structural damage to the clay
pipework downstream. It is likely that this caused a flow
restriction.
The third blockage occurred just downstream of the separator
allocated to the combination oven. It is possible that some small
particles will pass through the grease separator, which may
have been sufficient to block the small pipe downstream of the
separator.
The grease separators worked well and the trial demonstrated

to the premise owners how these grease separators work and
how much fat, oil and grease they actually capture, just from the
waste going down the kitchen sinks.
The trial was deemed to be successful as no blockages or

flooding events occurred during the six month trial period.
CCTV evidence confirmed that over the trial period little to no
build up of FOG or debris had occurred in the local drain/sewer.

A NRP P100 SD Dispenser was installed in a manhole and which
dosed the Bio-Kat product for a 30 day trial period in 2004.
Nutriox dosing was being carried out to solve odour problems at 2
pumping stations at this location. A length of sewer running across a
golf course kept blocking due to FOG and the wastewater treatment
works had mousse on the ditches.
It was therefore decided to replace the Nutriox dosing with the NRP
product (Bio-Kat) to remove both the odour and the build up of FOG.
The dosing was carried out upstream of the location of the odour
complaints. The product was applied by drip-feeding directly into the
sewer from a manhole. This trial ran for a period of 30 days during the
winter of 2004.
The dosing was required because a factory upstream was exceeding

their BOD/COD consent. The factory manufactures ready meals.
Results
It was difficult to determine the complete level of success of
the trial due to third party intervention, where the sewer
became blocked with plastic bags. NRP Ltd noted in their
report that the product did reduce the level of FOG build-up
It was difficult to assess the impact of the product on the

odour problem due to the time of year the trial was carried
out.
The local water company were keen to carry out a similar
trial but during warmer weather when the odour problems
would be worst.
There appeared to be little impact on the mousse at the
wastewater treatment works, NRP suggested that this was
because the concentration of the product used during this
trial was sufficient for odour removal, but not high enough to
have an effect on the problems at the treatment works.
The trial was carried out in 2005, and upon completion the
factory achieved their BOD/COD consent limit. The
reduction in the amount of FOG build up by 94% was an
additional effect of dosing.

Over the past ten years this road has had many FOG related
issues. These are largely thought to be due to the high
concentration of food catering outlets. There have been odour
complaints, sewer blockages, sewer flooding incidents, many
reports of rats and the loss of the use of toilets.
Swan Enviro Grease separator was installed externally at a food
catering premise for a year long trial.
It should be noted that other FOG management systems/devices
were installed at a number of the other premises in the road.
Guidance documents were issued to highlight the importance of
good kitchen practices and to reduce the amount of food waste
discharged via the sink.
Results
The grease separator significantly reduced the amount of
FOG entering the drain/sewer system. It was noted that
the performance could be improved with the addition of
the Swan Enviro dosing product "Swan Freshflo Dosing
Fluid". This would also make maintenance practices less
unpleasant.
During the trial period it was noted that there were no
odour issues and there was a significant reduction in the
numbers of rats at this Town Centre location. There were
also no reported sewer blockages or flooding incidents in
the local drain/sewer system. This trial significantly
reduced the amount of FOG being discharged to the local
drain/sewer system.

Pumping Station The pumping station has FOG problems, and receives
the discharge from a relatively small catchment of
about 20-25 domestic properties and one pub.
Three FOG treatment devices, 2 Big Dippers (one
connected to a pre-wash sink the second attached to
a double sink) and a Grease Guzzler were installed at
the pub but the problems at the pumping station
remained. Therefore the BioCake product was
installed at the pumping station as an additional FOG
control measure. Three BioCakes were suspended in
the wet well for a trial period of 3 months.
Results
At the end of the trial the FOG built up to a similar level to that at the
beginning of the trial (before cleaning), so the BioCake had made
little, if any difference. The FOG had accumulated around the side
walls, around the pumps, and on the netting holding the BioCakes.
The cake at the lowest level had dissolved completely, the other had
partially dissolved and the cake at the highest level, which didn't
appear to be under the water-level very much, was almost whole.
The reason that the product didnt work as well as anticipated is
possibly due to a lack of movement around the wet well as there
isn't much inflow in that pumping station and the water level in the
wet well doesn't rise/fall quickly. The cakes may not have been
installed at the correct levels as one had not dissolved at all.
