Honoring a lifetime
of helping others

Happy Halloween!

Resident Monique Begg, 84, receives

NAACP Community Service Award
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Moorestowns Monique Begg is
84 years old and has been volunteering for most of her life. For
the past 18 years, Begg has been
helping the less fortunate families of Moorestown through her
volunteer organization Friends
Enrichment Program, of which
she is the program founder and
coordinator.
Begg was acknowledged for all
of her hard work in the area by
being presented with the Community Service Award of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People during
the Southern Burlington County
Chapters Freedom Fund Gala on
Oct. 30.
Monique Begg and Friends
Enrichment Program have surely
distinguished
themselves
through committed service to the
community on behalf of the less
fortunate children This program has given them enrichment
and opportunities their parents
could not have afforded that will
last a lifetime, said Crystal
Charley, president of Southern

Burlington
County
NAACP. Also,
I have witnessed
Monique Begg
go above and
beyond to assist and advocate for the
families.
BEGG
There
have
been times that students of color
have been unfairly treated, and
she has advocated for those students at school. She is the example of community service, love
and inclusion.
I feel honored and I hope I can
live up to (the award). I always understand you can do more; I think
you can always stretch yourself a
teeny more. I will continue to do
the best I can for as long as I live,
Begg said.
Through FEP, Begg reaches out
to children with a message of
love and inclusion. Under her
leadership, FEPs mission is to develop skills and talents and build
self-confidence in children enplease see BEGG, page 26

Moorestown resident Natalia Hassinger was on Paw Patrol all night making sure no one broke the
law. Natalia and hundreds more came out to Paws Farm in Mount Laurel to show off their Halloween
costumes at the annual Halloween Bash. They played games, made crafts, walked through the
spooky maze and, most importantly, went home with some candy.

Lighting up Main Street

MBA kicks off holiday season with
39th annual Candlelight Night on Nov. 6
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
This Friday, Main Street in
Moorestown will be filled with
500 luminaries, the voices of
street choirs, horse-drawn carriages and early shoppers, all in
preparation for the upcoming holiday season.
The Moorestown Business Association will be hosting its annual kick-off to the holiday shopping season with the 39th Candlelight Night on Nov. 6 from 5 p.m.
to 9 p.m. on Main Street, featuring
candlelit sidewalks, sounds of the
season, special discounts and dinner specials.
(Candlelight Night) is a beautiful evening to appreciate what a
wonderful
community
Moorestown is. Come out and see
all the new things being offered.
There are a lot of new merchants,
and maybe youll notice things
that you didnt even know of before, MBA Vice President and
event chair Steven Pazienza said.
Last year, Candlelight Night

was held at the same time as the

Christmas Tree Lighting in December. After suggestions by the
shop owners on Main Street, Candlelight Night was changed to be
held in early November.
After one year of hosting this
event in December, we have listened to our members and moved
Candlelight Night back to the
first Friday in November,
Pazienza said. Its a way for our
members to thank their customers and showcase whats new
for the holidays. And long-time
residents really look forward to
this event, and each year, we have
more and more newcomers joining in the fun with their families.
Hundreds of families are expected to be seen strolling along
Main Street, stopping in candlelit
stores, listening to cheerful
sounds of the season and saying
hello to neighbors.
Storeowners and employees
will greet visitors with hot cider,
please see EVENT, page 28

Sean Fischel Connect values community

By KAHRA F. BUSS
Dept. of Parks & Recreation
The Department of Parks &
Recreation is proud of the rela-

tionships it has developed with

other
organizations
in
Moorestown that benefit our local
community.
The department
works with numerous local or-

ganizations, businesses and establishments to help provide opportunities to youth and families
that benefit their overall wellbeing and create a positive community experience. One such organization is Sean Fischel Connect, the local non-profit that has
proven that our interpersonal
connections help strengthen and
grow our community and the individuals within it.
Sean Fischel Connect was created in honor of young Sean Fischel, a true warrior who fought a
devastating battle again a littleknown disease, HLH (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis).
Not only have very few people
heard of the disease, but at the
time Sean was diagnosed, there
had been very little research done
on it. Seans parents, having faced
every parents ultimate nightmare, have taken comfort in the
connections that have been
formed since the beginning of his
illness, and what those connections have allowed them to do in
his memory.
So, what does this have to do
with the Department of Parks &
Recreation?
Kimberly, Seans
mother, tells the story of Sean as
a constantly active little boy who
loved soccer. He was in the Recreation Youth First Grade League
and was excited to play his first
real soccer season when he became ill. Following his death,
Seans parents wanted to give
back to the community that had
given them, and Sean, so much.
Following the first Sean Fischel
Connect 5K, in addition to donating the proceeds to CHOP to further the research on HLH, Seans
parents and the Sean Fischel Connect board felt it important to
give back locally. Over the last two
years, they have generously donated more than $25,000 to the Department of Parks & Recreation.
Believing making healthy opportunities available to all children,
this has money served multiple
purposes: some of the proceeds
were allotted to Recreation Soccer
team shirts; some went to WI-FI

Holiday helpers

Its the season to help others; let us know about your fundraiser or drive

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

orry to say this so early, while 60degree days are still upon us,
but, alas, the holiday season is
creeping up quickly!
The good news is that means many
good-hearted people and organizations
will be gathering food, clothing, toys,
money and other items for those less
fortunate.
At The Sun, we want to help make
your event or drive as successful as
possible. But to do that, we need your
help.
Many retailers count on Black Friday to help put their business in the
black for the year. If holiday sales are
strong, they have a good overall year. If
sales are soft, they struggle to get by.
The same theory can hold true for
nonprofits and other groups that de-

The need is there

The need for donations this holiday period
is strong. Tell us about your fundraising
effort or donation drive, and well tell
everyone else.

pend on the publics generosity during

the holiday season to see them through
the rest of the year. People, naturally,
are more giving during this time of the
year. So, in the coming weeks, youll
see bell-ringers, donation drives and a
lot of other efforts to help those in
need.
We salute everyone who holds a
drive to help those in need. But we also
want to help make those efforts as
grand and successful as possible.
To do that, we need to know about

your event as soon as possible (at least

two weeks in advance is best). We need
to know what types of items you are
trying to collect, who will benefit from
the drive and, most importantly, how
people can get involved to help you.
Email is the best way to send us this
information, and youll find our news
email address to the right.
Then, after we get your information,
well take it from there. Well get it into
the paper and let everyone in town
know what it is you are trying to accomplish and how they can be a part of
it.
Many families are still struggling
with the economy. There always are
people in need. Let us help you to help
them. Send us your event information
and lets make this a big donation year.

Pope blesses statue created by sculptor

for Moorestowns Percheron Park
When Pope Francis and his
friend Rabbi Abraham Skorka of
Buenos Aires met in Argentina in
2014, they began plans for a statue
to be made to commemorate the
50th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, the Vatican II document that
changed the relationship between
the Catholic and Jewish faiths.
St. Josephs University chose
Philadelphia artist Joshua Koffman to create the statue, Synagoga and Ecclesia in Our Time,
which is mounted in the plaza in
front of St. Josephs Chapel on
the schools City Avenue campus
in Philadelphia. It was dedicated
on Friday, Sept. 25, and when the
pope visited the statue two days
later, he blessed it and sprinkled
it with holy water.
The very same artist, Koffman,
has been commissioned by
Friends of Percheron Park to
sculpt the statue of Diligence, the
Percheron stallion who was

Special to The Sun

Percheron stallion Diligence.
brought to the USA from France
in 1839 by Moorestown native Edward Harris II, to improve the
work horses in this country. The
life-size statue of this handsome
horse will be the centerpiece of
the commemorative Percheron
Park at Main and High streets in
Moorestowns town center, just

steps from Harris home, the

Smith-Cadbury Mansion, now the
headquarters of the Historic Society of Moorestown.
Although soil remediation at
this site of a former gas station is
delaying the project, first envisioned in 2007, Friends of
Percheron Park are hopeful that
construction of the park might
begin in the spring of 2016.
Limited edition 10-inch bronze
replicas of the Diligence statue
may be ordered from Friends of
Percheron Park. Those who purchase this striking heirloom-quality piece will be helping to support the park. Contact Margo
Foster at (856) 235-5862 for information about ordering the Diligence model.

as two updated bathrooms both with new ceramic tile flooring. The spacious living room and kitchen offer

This beautiful French provincial home was custom built and lovingly maintained by the original owner. With curb appeal galore the upgrades start with a stamped concrete walk-way, a brick front porch
and professional landscaping. Inside you will find a large formal living room, a formal dining room and a renovated kitchen offering oak cabinetry, custom backsplash and a spacious dining area. Step
down into the family room which offers an Andersen sliding glass door to a 30 x 30 stamped concrete patio in a huge park-like backyard. Upstairs are three spacious bedrooms including a master with a
large walk-in closet and the ability to expand. The home was originally built to have a roof deck off the master bedroom, they decided to just put in windows, but it would be an easy upgrade for a potential to buyer to add French doors and have a fantastic roof deck! The full bathroom on the second floor was upgraded to include granite counters, granite flooring and granite walls. There is also recessed
lighting in the bathroom. The air conditioning was replaced 5 years ago. The water heater is just 4 years old and the well was replaced 5 years ago. The windows on the front and sides of the home have
also been replaced. There is also an oversized one car attached garage as well as a full basement. This location is ideal since there are only 4 homes on Roseville Lane and it is not a through street.

FEP has reached out to more

than 350 children and awarded
more than $190,600 in scholarships since 1997. During the
school year, FEP also runs a program on Sunday afternoons with
activities open to all scholarship
recipients and other school-age
children.
What you hope is that the children will grow happier if they
have something to do on the side
that is pleasing to them, Begg
said.
Growing up, Begg was surrounded by volunteerism. Born
in Montreal, Canada, her mother
would help less fortunate families
in the neighborhood, and her father, a furniture salesman, would
generously allow people to pay
what they could for furniture.
Begg was a volunteer in a
group that provided services to
residents of a slum of Montreal.
She was assigned to a few families, bringing them food and other
necessities regularly. During the
winter, she bagged coal in burlap
bags and delivered it to these families. During the summer, the
group ran a childrens summer
camp in the Laurentian Mountains, where Begg worked as a
volunteer.
I just felt like it was a moral
obligation to help those who have
less than we have. I think I felt
this from a long time ago, and
that is why I volunteered my
hours to help those who had less.
When you help other people, you
benefit as much if not more than
the people you help. You get a feeling that your immediate world is
benefiting from your time on
earth. I want to feel when I left
this world that I left it a bit better, Begg said.
When
Begg
moved
to

Moorestown with her husband

Edwin, she noticed there were
some families in Moorestown
who were struggling financially,
with children running around,
feeling like they had nothing.
Begg wanted to help those children by giving them a productive
alternative. So in 1997, Begg started FEP to give children opportunities they normally wouldnt get,
starting with enrolling families
in
swim
lessons
at
the
Moorestown Community House.
There are a number of poor
families in Moorestown, not all in
affordable housing. The people
want to be here because they
want the schools, so they are willing to make sacrifices to be here,
but may end up needing help
from time to time, Begg said.
The
Community
Service
Award of the NAACP is presented to a person or organization
that distinguishes them through
their committed service to the
community on behalf of those
less fortunate.
(Monique Begg) has made it
her life's work to eradicate racism
through inclusion, love and community service. She is a modern
day Freedom Fighter. She is passionate about social justice and
equality, Charley said.
Begg felt honored to receive the
award, with her husband, son and
many others surrounding her.
Im glad I did this. You never
know who it is going to work out
for in the long run. It is not something that I have control over; I
only have control over what I do. I
just hope that I am able to do this
for a good many years, Begg
said.
For those who would like to
know more about FEP, call Begg
at (856) 235-3963.

were also encouraged to offer special discounts for the night.
Restaurants were encouraged to
have specials for the night as well.
This is a great way to get together and say hello and enjoy the
evening. With new restaurants
and stores, the event will be much
nicer and there are more choices
than ever before; its a great way
for an early shopping start,
Pazienza said.
This year, residents will see
there have been a few changes
compared to past years.
One of the changes is keeping
Main Street open to vehicular
traffic, which will allow attendees
to walk on the sidewalks closer to
the shops and restaurants. There
will also be no parking on Main
Street after 4 p.m. to allow the
businesses and luminaries to be

better seen. Parking will be available behind the stores as well as

on side streets. There will also be
crossing guards at any crossings
that dont have a crossing sign to
avoid accidents or injuries.
The goal is to make sure it is
safe. Traffic will be very slow
anyone who is in a hurry should
avoid Main Street, Pazienza said.
To help with the atmosphere of
the event, the north side of Main
Street will be lined with 500 luminaries along the sidewalk.
(The luminaries are for) ambiance. Its nice to have some candles at Candlelight Night to have
that atmosphere walking up and
down the streets while enjoying
our town, Pazienza said.
Another new addition is a
Find Nipper Contest that will
draw attendees into various
stores looking for various Nipper dogs to earn the chance to
win prizes.
Popular attractions back this
year include the horse-drawn
