thequestionis"Whichisphysicallycorrect?"thentheanswerisclearbothare
correct.Botharebasedonvalidprinciplesofphysics.TheBernoulliequationis

thedebate,andthistreatmentwillnotsettleit.Butperhapsitcanatleastindicatethe
linesofthediscussion.
ThosewhoadvocateanapproachtoliftbyNewton'slawsappealtotheclear
existanceofastrongdownwashbehindthewingofanaircraftinflight.Thefactthat
theairisforceddownwardclearlyimpliesthattherewillbeanupwardforceonthe
airfoilasaNewton's3rdlawreactionforce.Fromtheconservationofmomentum
viewpoint,theairisgivenadownwardcomponentofmomentumbehindtheairfoil,
andtoconservemomentum,somethingmustbegivenanequalupwardmomentum.
ThosewhoprefertodiscussliftinthesetermsofteninvoketheKuttaJoukowski
theoremforliftonarotatingcylinder.Theliftonaspinningcylinderhasbeenclearly
demonstrated,anditsdiscussionincludesavortexinthecirculatingair.Many
discussionsofairfoilliftinvokesuchavortexintheeffectivecirculationofairaround
themovingairfoil.Conservationofangularmomentuminthefluidrequiresan
oppositecirculationintheairshedfromthetrailingedgeofthewing,andsuchvortex
motionhasbeenobserved.
