QUESTION.1
A beam with one layer of tensile steel with effective depth of 600 mm is to carry a uniformly distributed
dead load of 12 kN/m and a live load of 16 kN/m. The beam is simply supported on to square columns
of 400 mm X 400 mm. Determine the design shear force.
QUESTION.2
When concrete beams were tested in the laboratory, the beam with reinforcement at the bottom
developed inclined crack near the support and the beam with stirrups developed a vertical crack at the
centre of the beam. Give reasons.
QUESTION. 3
What is a Plastic centre? Use diagrams to explain.
QUESTION. 4
A column of 6m length pinned at both ends has a cross sectional area of 12x104 mm2 a second moment
of area of 9x109 mm4. Calculate the slenderness ratio.
QUESTION.5
What is the difference between a braced and an unbraced column in relation to design Moment?
QUESTION. 6
Explain the details of the corner reinforcements to be provided in the case of two way slab.
QUESTION.7
Briefly outline the simplified method of analysis for a two-way slab supported on four corners
QUESTION.8
What is punching shear strength in the context of a slab and how would you calculate it?
QUESTION.9
Briefly discuss the different kinds of prestress loss you have to take in to consideration in the case
prestressed concrete design.
QUESTION.10
With the aid of a diagram explain how you will go about constructing an interaction diagram.

QUESTION. 1 (15 Marks)

A simply supported beam is shown below. Design the shear reinforcement using N10 stirrups. Take fc =
30MPa.

QUESTION. 2 (15 Marks)

The reinforced concrete section shown below is subjected to a torsion T* = 5kNm in addition to a shear
V* = 150 Kn. Take fc = 32 MPa, check whether R10 ties @ 125 are adequate for supporting this
combined shear and torsion.

QUESTION. 3 (15 Marks)

Shown below is a cantilever beam. At the support section a-a, all the bars are required to develop the
yield stress, 500 MPa. Taking fc = 25 MPa, design and detail the support reinforcement if (a) Straight
bars are used (b) Standard cogs are used

QUESTION. 4 (15 Marks)

Details of an asymmetrically reinforced rectangular column section are given below. The column is
subjected to a uniaxial loading about the x-axis. For the given eccentricity, compute Nu. Take fc = 32
MPa. You may use the approximate approach.
