Tier 4 Engine Emission Symbols, Diesel Particulate Filter Diesel Exhaust Fluid Operator Interface

This white paper describes the findings of an industry-wide group, convened by AEM. The
purpose of this group was to identify a common set of symbols for use in off-road Tier 4
applications, in particular, symbols relative to Tier 4 aftertreatment. The intent is to provide
common symbols for customers and end-users so that regardless of the OEM machine, the
customer will interface with consistent symbols.
This document provides general guidance on symbols used on operator displays and operator
controls. Manufacturers should consider this information as a part of the design and
development of their Tier 4 applications. Manufacturers are free to elaborate or enhance the
strategies outlined, but it is recommended that manufacturers limit variations to promote
standardization across multiple product sectors.
The symbols described herein may be obtained by contacting an ISO document provider.

Either Option A or Option B can be used. The choice should be determined by which method of
representing temperature best fits with the manufacturers strategy.
The symbol element for engine emissions system (see below) is ISO 7000-2944.

If a manufacturer uses a Graphical User Interface (GUI) or other multi-function electronic display, the
following strategy should be used:

Lowest state requiring regeneration: symbol for "engine emissions filter" (ISO 7000-2433).

Progressively worsening states with greater need for regeneration: symbol for "engine emissions
filter" (ISO 7000-2433) in combination with an operator alert symbol consistent with the
manufacturer's operator alert strategy.

Option A is ISO 7000-2596 as


registered by TC 22/SC 13 for
road vehicles.
Option B is an application of
ISO 7000-2596 using ISO
7000-1603B as the "failure"
exclamation mark.

Option B

Escalating warnings, required to meet emission regulation requirements to alert operators of critical DEF
levels or quality, should be implemented according to the manufacturers existing warning strategies.

If a manufacturer uses a switch to start or to disable active regeneration, and the application has selective
regeneration functions, the following recommended strategy should be used:
To request or start
regeneration.

Momentary switch position.


Dwell time to start regeneration
as determined by the
manufacturer.

To allow regeneration
according to criteria established
by manufacturer.

Default switch position.

To disable or prevent
regeneration.

Momentary or constant switch


position as determined by the
manufacturer.

It is recommended that the manufacturer, where appropriate, provides the operator with a method to
determine if regeneration has been disabled.

If color is to be associated with the DEF fill point or cap, the color light to medium blue is recommended.
(Blue Pantone #285 or RAL #5005) Some filling locations utilize magnetic sensors in the nozzle that
interfaces with an adapter in the filler neck according to ISO 22241-4.

Equipment sold in the U.S. must be


labeled near the fuel inlet with the
text "ULTRA LOW SULFUR FUEL
ONLY" as defined by 40 CFR
1039.135.
An example label is shown in the
left-hand column.
This required text may be used in
conjunction with symbol ISO 70001541.

[Note: Low sulfur fuel is


allowable for some
categories of engines.
See specific regulations.]

For equipment not sold in the US, it


is recommended to use symbol ISO
7000-1541 along with an indication
of sulfur content through the use of
the wording "SXX mg/kg" where XX
is the maximum sulfur content of the
fuel for the specific market.
Two example labels are shown in the
left-hand column.
This label should be located near the
fuel inlet.
