Q1 : Answer the following questions and explain your answer by drawing schematic diagrams and
writing equations
a) Why do cylindrical Alternators operate with steam turbines?
b) Which type of Synchronous generators are used in Hydro-electric plants and why?
c) What is meant by load angle of an Alternator?
d) Upon what factors does the load angle depend?
e) How synchronous impedance is calculated from OCC and SCC?
f) State the condition to be satisfied before connecting two alternators in parallel
g) List the factors that affect the load sharing in parallel operating generators?
Q2 : a) By investigation and complete drawing, State the difference between Brush type exciter and
brushless type SM.
b) Draw, explain and describe the V curve for synchronous motor
c) Explain by drawing and investigation how the Synchronous Machines Operating as a
Synchronous Condenser in PF Correction process (you can suggest case study)
Q3: 200 KVA, 660 V, 50 Hz three phase synchronous generator connected to infinite bus, the
generator parameters are R=0.018 Ohm/phase, Xs=0.3 Ohm/phase. For loading condition of 135
KVA and 0.80 leading power factors find the following:
a) Excitation voltage and voltage regulation for this loading condition.
b) Generator active and reactive power: Ps, Qs.

c)

For the same power, if the excitation field only is changed to obtain unity power factor
calculate the excitation voltage, voltage regulation, load current and power angle for this
case. [Draw the phasor diagrams for all cases]
Q4: A three phase 50 MVA , 11 KV ,60 HZ salient pole synchronous machine has Xd= 0.85p.u.
,Xq=0.35 p.u. and other parameters are neglected. The machine draws rated current with 0.8
lagging power factor. The rotational losses is 0.12 p.u.
a) Find the excitation voltage Ef and power angle
b) Find the excitation power , reluctance power and the motor power
c) Find the maximum power , current and power factor corresponding to maximum power.
d) If the field current is reduced to ZERO, Will the machine stay in synchronism? Explain
Q5: i) A switched reluctance stepper motor has a full step angle of 15 deg. The motor has a load
torque of 60 N/cm that runs at a speed of 5 rpm when the supply has 200 pps. Compute the
actual speed of the motor and the gear box ratio of the load.
ii) Suggest a proper configuration of the stator and rotor teeth and windings for this motor and
show the switching sequence table of operation.
Q6: i) Show that the developed power of the 3phase reluctance motor is given by:
3V2 [ (Xd - Xq)/ Xd Xq ] Sin(2)
ii) A 230V, 4-pole, 50Hz, delta connected, 3-phase reluctance motor has: Xd= 100, Xq= 20 Ohm.
Based on the circle diagram solution, compute at a P.F loading of 0.866:
a) The developed active and reactive power.
b) The developed torque and power angle.
c) The maximum possible developed power and Torque
