With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human

come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11Can
both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers

salt spring produce fresh water.

Minister:

Tithing is the biblical principle of returning 10% to God first.

Congregation:

The earth is the Lords, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

Minister:

Debt is a spiritual issue. We are robbing Gods people when we live beyond our means, refuse
to budget, invest, save, and tithe; we are seduced by debt.

Congregation:

The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is Mine and you reside in my land as
foreigners and strangers.

Minister:

Tithing, budgeting, and stewardship are the solutions to the spiritual problem of debt.

Congregation:

Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.

Minister:

Debt is fed by the desire for immediate gratification, poor planning, and the need to keep up
appearances.

Congregation:

His master replied, Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few
things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your masters happiness!

Minister:

Tithing, saving, budgeting, and good stewardship of resources is the calling of all Christians.

Congregation:

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running
over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Minister:

Debt slavery has been used since 1863 to prevent people of African descent from gaining
power and independence.

Congregation:

Share with the Lords people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Minister:

Our ancestors were forced into slavery. Today, we volunteer to be enslaved by debt and we
mortgage our childrens future.

Together:

O God, we have been called to be a debt-free congregation. We are called to teach our
community, children, and grandchildren the discipline of tithing, the power of budgeting,
the blessing of saving, and the benefit of investing. We desire to live debt-free because it
honors God and our ancestors, who died not for debt, but that we may live free with our God.
Amen.

Confession of Sins
Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we
come before You, acknowledging our sins,
our shortcomings, and our breaking of our
Covenant with You.
Not only have we done things we ought
not to have done, said things we ought
not to have said, left undone so many
things we ought to have done and been
silent when we should have witnessed for
You.
Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended
not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives.
We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come
from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed even our own Black brothers and sisters!
Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great
sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your
Name the praise forevermore.
******
To All Our Visitors ... To all who mourn and need comforting ... To all who are
friendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need liberation;
and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming, and
may God bless you.

To Do Justice
Family,
Kwame Nkrumah Academy Elementary School (KNA), the CPS charter school that was birthed out
of Trinity United Church of Christ, was recently placed on the Chicago Public Schools Academic
Warning List. For those of us who have followed KNAs progress, we know they have been a stellar
school with an African-centered curriculum and excellence in academic programming. As recently
as last year, they were a Level 1 CPS school, a rating that could only be exceeded by Level 1+.
With a new Charter School Accountability Policy, KNAs rating dropped from Level 1 to Level 3, and
as a result, they are now on CPS Academic Warning List. Being on this list does not mean they are
slated to close, but they are required to submit a remediation plan for immediate improvement.
KNA is part of our village. We have many children who attend and are benefiting from their
academic rigor and African-centered philosophy. One of the outstanding results evidenced in
their education style is the fact they had no (zero) out-of-school suspensions in 2013 or 2014,
compared to a city-wide average of 16.7 per 100 students. This is a testament to the love and
care that the teachers and administration are showering on their students. With the challenges
presented by the school-to-prison pipeline, it is critical that we do whatever we can to support
schools that are getting it right!
As the family at KNA work to resolve their challenge with CPS and meet system objectives, we
reached out to them to find our how Trinity UCC could support them in their efforts. Please take a
look at the volunteer opportunities below:

Tutors: During the school day and after school hours to support our scholars through
differentiated learning to close the achievement gap in reading, math, and writing
Teachers helpers: To support teachers in the classroom with small group and one-on-one
instruction of scholars who need additional support
Volunteers: For daily lunch, recess, and dismissal monitoring to assist with maintaining
order and ensuring safety
Volunteers: (Stipends may be available) for Friday aftercare programming from 1pm-4pm
so that teachers and staff are free to participate in professional development and planning
opportunities

If you can help in any of these areas, please contact KNA at 773-568-8000.

introducing Min. Renita Ward
is a second-year M.Div.
student at the University of Chicago and a Trinity UCC
ordained deacon doing her field placement at Trinity
UCC as part of her Christian studies. She will shadow
Rev. Linda Mootry-Dodd, Trinitys Associate Pastor
of Sick Visitation, as well as engage Trinitys progress
and development initiatives over the coming year.
Her passion is centered on lifting up Jesus Christ,
restorative justice, and being equipped to set the captives free. Her goal is to
be able to pray with someone in jail, but also actually keep them from going
or to help get them out. To that end, she is completing dual degrees and is a
second-year law student at DePaul College of Law as well. Before returning to
school full-time in 2014, Min. Renita worked in communications and media
in the Chicagoland area. She was reared in the African Methodist Episcopal
Church, has Southern roots, and is a native of Georgia. Min. Renita is mother

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
The poetic, prophetic power of Coates essay is reminiscent
of James Baldwin and brings to mind the biting critique of
Harold Cruse. No other contemporary writer speaks with the
raw honesty and beauty of modern Black life like Coates. This
short essay is a riveting personal letter to Coates teenage son
penned in the wake of the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric
Garner. I encourage all Trinitarians to read and wrestle with this
beautiful and brutal book.

Negroland by Margo Jefferson

Margo Jefferson, a native of Chicago and Pulitizer prize-winning
author of cultural criticism, has created a stunning memoir of
life in The Third Race the upper crust of Black middleclass
life in Chicago. This is not a romantic mythologized memoir
designed to valorize all things bourgeois, but a powerful,
elegant, and clear-eyed view of the dangers and moments of
nobility of this area of Black life Jefferson calls Negroland. If
you are interested in learning more about life in the 50s, 60s,
and early 70s in Chicago and especially for middleclass, upper
crust Chicago, Negroland is the book for you. I would call it
a companion piece to Isabela Wilkersons stunning book, The Warmth of Other Suns
probably the best literary presentation of the Great Migration written in the last 20
years.

Rocket Science
In a recent Wall Street Journal editorial, Gail Heriot, a
professor of law at the University of San Diego penned an
article asking the question, Why Arent There More Black
Scientists?

Anthony Williams, Postdoctoral

Scholar at The University of
Chicago - Pritzker School of
Medicine

In 2006, HBCUs accounted for 21% of the bachelors

degrees awarded to black students. Yet 33% of the black
students awarded Ph.D.s in science or engineering had
received their bachelors degree at an
HBCU. That is worth reading again.

While the Endeleo Institute is laser focused on exposing and preparing

our young people (via college tours and fairs) to the very rich options
that HBCUs afford, there is clear recognition that schools in our
own backyard sorely lack the diversity of students matriculating and
graduating in the fields of medicine, health sciences and engineering.
As such, Endeleo is meeting with Rush Medical College to discuss a
possible collaborative that could create a pipeline of African-American
students from our Chicago Public High School partnerships to reflect
more African-American representation. There is a great need for more
culturally competent health professionals in our community to better
connect us to the science and research that could help reduce the
disproportionate health disparities in our neighborhoods.
If you know a student that might be remotely interested in any of
these lucrative fields, please contact us at 773-966-1590.

It isnt because they dont have the right stuff, according

to Ms. Heriot. Many do, she contends, but the problem is
that they tend to take on too much too soon given their
level of academic preparation. Professor Heriot goes
on to say it is no fluke that historically black colleges
and universities, or HBCUs, have excellent records of
graduating future scientists and engineers.
