public in 2004. The menu features both vegetarian and meat pizzas, chicken wings and boneless
chicken, sandwiches, pasta, stuffed cheesy breads and a variety of dessert items, including
cinnamon sticks and chocolate lava cakes and a variety of soft drinks, including Coca-Cola,
Fanta, and Sprite.

Pizza - the fast food that has today become one of the most popular snacks of youngsters! You
will find pizza parlors or pizzerias in almost each and every market, including the local ones.
Im sure even you like to eat pizza, if not on a daily, then on an occasional basis. Have you
wondered how the pizza came into being i.e. what is the history and origin of the delicious
snack? Pizza has a very colorful and interesting history attached to it and with the information
given below, you can find all about its background.

It is believed by almost every person in the world that pizza was invented by the Italians, making
it an Italian recipe. However, one can trace the origin of the snack back to the ancient times. As
per the earlier records, Babylonians, Israelites, Egyptians and other ancient Middle Eastern
people used to eat a flat, un-leaven bread, which was cooked in mud ovens and had an
appearance somewhat similar to the pizzas we eat today.

There are also evidences to suggest that the ancient Mediterranean people, like Greeks, Romans
and Egyptians, used to eat their flat bread, after topping it with seasonings like olive oil and
native spices. Pizza is believed to have pervaded the lower class of the Naples (Italy) in a similar
fashion. There is also a story, dating back to around late 19th century, about an Italian baker
called Raffaele Esposito, who created a new dish for the visiting royalty.

BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 6

King Umberto, the Italian monarch, was touring the area where the baker lived, along with his
consort, Queen Margherita. To create a favorable impression on the King and the Queen,
Raffaele made flat bread and topped it with red tomato, white mozzarella cheese and green basil,
the color of the toppings representing the colors of Italy (red, white and green). The king and
queen were very impressed by it and soon, the news spread to the masses.

The popularity of the flat bread, topped with seasonings, reached such a height that other bakers
started imitating it and thus, was born the pizza as we know of today. Pizza is believed to have
made its entry in the United States around the beginning of the 20th century. The immigrants,
mainly in the cities of New York and Chicago, can be credited with the making the people of
USA aware of the existence of pizza.

With time, small cafes, serving Italian pizzas, started opening up in American cities. Even the
American soldiers, who participated in World War II, were exposed to the tasty dish and
contributed to its popularity in their homeland. Today, pizza has become almost synonymous
with fast foods, across the globe. Right from kids and college-goers to professionals and oldies,
everyone loves to have a bite of a pizza generously topped with mozzarella cheese.

History of Domino's Pizza

BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 7

Domino's Pizza started life as DomiNick's in 1960 founded by two brothers Tom and James
Monaghan from Michigan. Within 8 months, James sold his share in the company to his brother,
leaving Tom the sole owner of the pizza outlet.

In 1965 the company changed its name Domino's Pizza Inc and two years later opened its first
franchise. By 1978 the company had expanded rpidly and boasted 200 franchises throughout the
US.
After 38 years as the head and owner of Domino's, co-founder Tom Monaghan decided to hand
over the reins to another company, Bain Capital, selling his 93% share of the firm for a
whopping $1 billion in 1998.
The management team at Domino's is now headed up by Patrick J. Doyle who was announced as
the Domino's CEO in March 2010.
The first UK Domino's Pizza store was opened in 1985, with the first outlet opening its doors in
1991. The pizza delivery giant has grown to great prominence in Britain in the last 25 years and
now operates 620 across the country, with plans in place to introduce many more outlets
throughout 2011.
Domino's Pizza is now the second largest home pizza delivery company in America and has a
global presence with 9,000 corporate and franchise outlets operating across 60 different
international markets employing 145,000 employees worldwide.

ingredients, you can see why they call us the pizza delivery experts.
Dominos is also quick to innovate when it comes to making our customers experience more
convenient and enjoyable. We were the first pizza delivery company to offer nationwide online

2.5 Competitors after product services:

Dominos has many competitors both domestically and internationally. Hoovers states that
Dominos is the world's #2 pizza chain (behind YUM! Brands' Pizza Hut division.) Their
competitors include fast food companies such as McDonalds, as well as other pizza take-out
services like Papa Johns, and worldwide pizza delivery company giant Pizza Hut.

McDonalds Corporation Inc.

McDonald's Corporation (NYSE: MCD) is the world's largest chain of hamburger fast food
restaurants, serving around 68 million customers daily in 119 countries. Headquartered in the
United States, the company began in 1940 as a barbecue restaurant operated by Richard and
Maurice McDonald; in 1948 they reorganized their business as a hamburger stand using
production line principles. Businessman Ray Kroc joined the company as a franchise agent in

BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 10

1955. He subsequently purchased the chain from the McDonald brothers and oversaw its
worldwide growth.
A McDonald's restaurant is operated by either a franchisee, an affiliate, or the corporation itself.
The corporation's revenues come from the rent, royalties and fees paid by the franchisees, as well
as sales in company-operated restaurants. McDonald's revenues grew 27 percent over the three
years ending in 2007 to $22.8 billion, and 9 percent growth in operating income to $3.9 billion.
McDonald's primarily sells hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken, french fries, breakfast items,
soft drinks, milkshakes and desserts. In response to changing consumer tastes, the company has
expanded its menu to include salads, wraps, smoothies and fruit.

A massive worldwide franchise that specializes in the fast food industry is McDonalds. In 2008,
McDonalds revenues exceeded $23 million.9 McDonalds brand image is a major strength for
them as people of all ages across the globe recognize the golden arches logo. With their well
recognized logo, McDonalds has been involved in many legal issues such as being accused for
false advertising and violation of fraud acts.

Papa Johns International, Incorporated

Dominos competes with Papa Johns on the same level of pizza delivery and pizza takeout.
Chicken wings and chicken strips are also a specialty (along with pizzas) for Papa Johns. They
recorded a $36.8 million net profit in 2008. This was a twelve percent increase from the previous
year.10 They remain a large competitor of Dominos with their increasing popularity. Papa
Johns Pizza is a well established International franchise restaurant chain from USA and it is the
3rd largest pizza company in the world.

BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 11

Betrayal Pizza Company Son Bud, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Betray Corporation, has signed
a franchise agreement with Papa Johns International Inc. to develop and operate Papa Johns
restaurants in Malaysia. Betray Pizza Company was also granted the first right of refusal for the
potential expansion of franchise business to Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the
Philippines. Currently, there are more than 3,700 Papa John's restaurants in 32 countries.

Pizza Hut
Pizza Hut (corporately known as Pizza Hut, Inc.) is an American restaurant chain and
international franchise that offers different styles of pizza along with side dishes including salad,
pasta, Buffalo wings, breadsticks, and garlic bread. Pizza Hut is a subsidiary of Yum! Brands,
Inc., the world's largest restaurant company.
Pizza Hut operates as a subsidiary to the food giant Yum! Brands. They specialize in pizza
making. Pizza Hut is even more focused on health conscious people by incorporating a salad bar
into their sit down restaurant section and by serving nutritional pasta bowls. They also have an
extremely strong brand image and compete with Dominos for brand recognition.
Pizza Hut is split into several different restaurant formats; the original family-style dine-in
locations; store front delivery and carry-out locations; and hybrid locations that offer carry-out,
delivery, and dine-in options. Many full-size Pizza Hut locations offer lunch buffet, with "allyou-can-eat" pizza, salad, bread sticks, and a special pasta. Additionally, Pizza Hut also has a
BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 12

number of other business concepts that are different from the store type; Pizza Hut "Bistro"
locations are "Red Roofs" which offer an expanded menu and slightly more upscale options.
"Pizza Hut Express" and "The Hut" locations are fast food restaurants. They offer a limited menu
with many products not found at traditional Pizza Huts. These type of stores are often paired in a
collocated location with a sibling brand such as Wing Street, KFC or Taco Bell, and are also
found on college campuses, food courts, theme parks, and in stores such as Target and Wal-Mart.
Vintage "Red Roof" locations can be found throughout the United States, and quite a few exist in
the UK and Australia, and Mxico. Even so, many such locations offer delivery/carryout service.
This building style was common in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The name "Red Roof" is somewhat anachronistic now, since many locations have brown roofs.
Dozens of "Red Roofs" have closed or been relocated/rebuilt. Many "Red Roof" branches have
beer if not a full bar, music from a jukebox, and sometimes an arcade. In the mid 1980s, the
company moved into other successful formats including delivery/carryout and the fast food
"Express" model.

2.6 SWOT Analysis

Dominos is a very recognizable brand name throughout the world and is the leader in the pizza
delivery and takeout business. Dominos continues to operate throughout the United States as
well as in over 55 other countries.

Strengths
Since Dominos is so widely known, it has a worldwide presence. Dominos has stores Mexico,
South Korea, Canada, Japan, France, Taiwan, and many other countries. They are a figurehead in
BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 13

the pizza delivery industry. In addition with its worldwide presence, Dominos has an extremely
strong brand image. This results in very loyal customers and helps the company when they
introduce new products. Dominos also has a very strong network with its franchisees. They are
all extremely diversified and with their strong network, they are able to increase their market
share and encourage sales.

Weaknesses
A major weakness for Dominos is that they have experienced a decline in their store sales. Over
the past two years the revenues have declined and this can affect their brand image and their
profits. Part of these losses was due to the decline in the number of domestic franchises that were
open in 2008. Dominos hopes to turn these numbers back around in the next couple years.

Opportunities
Dominos has multiple opportunities. One significant advantage Dominos has over its
competitors is their focus to delivery pizza the most efficiently. This helps improve their
operating effectiveness with minimized spending. There is a large growth in China and Indias
population and Dominos could take advantage of this growth to help increase their market
presence and increase their revenues. Dominos has also begun to offer their services on mobile
devices and now many sales come from their phone application. They constantly are working to
find new improvements to maintain their growth and continue to gain and lead in competitive
advantages.

Threats
The competition of the pizza delivery industry is definitely a threat for Dominos. There are
constantly new businesses being formed in the pizza and fast food industries. Some of their
BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 14

emerging competitors are Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, and McDonalds. Another threat is how people
are becoming much more aware of their health. With this increase in health awareness, it could
affect the profits of Dominos. A final threat is the increase of labor and food prices. Minimum
wage has a major impact on their business. All of Dominos supplies have also increased in price
and this has hurt their profits by increasing their operating costs.

LITERATURE
REVIEW

LITERATURE REVIEW
Working conditions refers to the working environment and to the non-pay aspects of an
employees terms and conditions of employment. It covers such matters as the organization of
work and work activities; training, skills and employability; health, safety and well-being; and
working time and work-life balance. The objectives of improved living and working conditions
were to be achieved primarily through the mechanisms of the common market. Intervention was
only to secure what was consistent with the common market: the free movement of labor.
General conditions of work define, in many ways, peoples' experience of work. Minimum
standards for working conditions are defined in each country but the large majority of workers,
BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 16

including many of those whose conditions are most in need of improvement, are excluded from
the scope of existing labor protection measures. In many countries, workers in cottage industries,
the urban informal economy, agricultural workers (except for plantations), small shops and local
vendors, domestic workers and home workers are outside the scope of protective legislation.
Other workers are deprived of effective protection because of weaknesses in labor law
enforcement. This is particularly true for workers in small enterprises, which account for over 90
per cent of enterprises in many countries, with a high proportion of women workers.

Working Conditions Requirements

The main requirements which is important for employees in all type of organizations. The
conditions in which the employees work freely.

Freely chosen employment

All work is to be voluntary and workers are to be free to leave upon reasonable notice. Use of
forced, bonded, indentured, or involuntary prison labor is prohibited.
Child labor
Use of child labor is strictly prohibited. Child labor includes any person under the age of fifteen
(15), or under the age for completing compulsory, education or under the minimum age for
employment in the country, whichever is greatest.
Harsh or inhumane treatment
Harsh and inhumane treatment, including any sexual harassment, sexual abuse, corporal
punishment, mental or physical coercion, or verbal abuse of workers, is strictly prohibited, as is
any threat of such treatment.

BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 17

Minimum wages
Compensation paid to workers must comply with all applicable wage laws, including those
relating to minimum wages, overtime hours, and legally mandated benefits.
Working hours
Worker strain is clearly linked to increased accidents, illness, lowered productivity, and increased
turnover. Workers must therefore not be required to work more than the maximum set by local
law, including overtime hours.

Freedom of association
Workers are to be allowed the right to freely in accordance with local laws. Workers are to be
able to communicate openly with their management regarding working conditions without fear
of reprisal, intimidation, or harassment

Fair Working Conditions (FWC)

Fair Working Conditions (FWC) is a quality auditing project which aims to measure and
formally accredit best employment practices worldwide with a particular emphasis on markets
not yet thoroughly regulated.

3.2 Significant of business environment

Accidents at work and occupational injuries represent a considerable economic burden for
individuals, employers and to society as a whole. For small companies in particular, accidents
can have a major financial impact. Some of these costs, such as lost workdays or lost income, are
BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 18

obvious and can be expressed readily in monetary terms. However, many of the economic
consequences of accidents are hidden to some extent, or cannot be easily quantified.
It is not only this ranges of costs that enterprises must be aware of, but also the added benefits
that proper management of safety and health bring. Studies have clearly shown that an efficient
and integrated management of occupational safety and health is closely related to business
excellence and profitability.

Changes in working conditions

Changes in working conditions and other aspects of the employment relationship can generate
serious industrial relations problems. One problem is that workers may not have precise
information about their working conditions in the first place. This was addressed by Council
Directive 91/533/EEC of 14 October 1991 on an employers obligation to inform employees of
the conditions applicable to the contract or employment relationship.
As the Explanatory Memorandum to the proposed directive put it, some workers have neither a
written contract of employment nor a letter of appointment explaining the elements of the
employment relationship or referring to a collective agreement or any other easily accessible
written document (COM (90) 563 final).

The employer is obliged to prepare a document with the requisite information, and give it to the
employee not later than two months after the commencement of employment. To maintain the
directives objective of keeping the employee informed, a new document that reflects any
changes in core working conditions will have to be issued.

BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 19

The normal rule is that an employer cannot change the terms and conditions of employment
without the consent of the employee, when such modifications are outside the management
prerogative. So merely informing the employee by a written statement is not conclusive of the
existence of an agreed change in the terms.

When the employer has not the right in the contract if he tries to alter rates of pay, hours of
work, or the status or grade of the employee he or she must obtain the employees consent
before the change can have any legal effect. The existence of a written statement does not mean
that it has been agreed and is thus binding .If the employer unilaterally drafts the written
information, challenges concerning the accuracy, and hence validity, of the document purporting
to comply with the directives requirements may arise in the absence of any worker input to the
document. This could be avoided if the document itself cites a collective agreement as the source
for changes in terms and conditions.

3.3 SCOPE OF BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

Working conditions and salaries in India are different from the ones in western countries. The
official work week in India runs from Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 6pm each day. In
reality, overtime is the norm and most local companies do not compensate their workers for it.
The Indian work culture is immensely diverse. There are major differences depending on
whether you work for small, local companies, for big Indian corporations or for international
companies. Business practices also vary between regions.

Work practices in India

The importance of hierarchies in Indian culture can also be witnessed in the daily work
environment. People of different management levels are treated differently. The behaviour of
superiors towards other employees seems very rude from a Western point of view. This is normal
BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 20

in India. . Even though that might make you feel uncomfortable at first, you need to adapt to this
as otherwise employees of lower hierarchy levels will try to take advantage of your kindness.
They might treat you extra nice but then expect favours in return, such as help in getting a job in
the West.
Communication within Indian companies is something many expatriates have trouble getting
used to. Unlike rather relaxed business dinners, formality plays an important role in Indian work
environment and instructions are direct (to the point of seeming bossy). It is also highly unlikely
that you will address you co-workers with their first names.

Acceptable Conditions of Work

State government laws set minimum wages, hours of work, and safety and health standards. The
Factories Act mandates an 8-hour workday, a 49-hour workweek, and minimum working
conditions. These standards were generally enforced and accepted in the modern industrial
sector; however, not observed in order and less economically stable industries.

Minimum wages varied according to the state and to the sector of industry. Such wages provided
only a minimal standard of living for a worker and were inadequate to provide a decent standard
of living for a worker and family. Most workers employed in units subject to the Factories Act
received more than the minimum wage, including mandated bonuses and other benefits. The
state governments set a separate minimum wage for agricultural workers but did not enforce it

BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 21

effectively. Some industries, such as the apparel and footwear industries, did not have a
prescribed minimum wage in any of the states in which such industries operated.

Women - Working Conditions in India

Working environment is important to ensure that the work fits the job to the individual rather
than the individual to the job. In a semi-industrialized country like India, the working class is one
of the weakest sections of society. With society being male-dominated, women workers receive
poor recognition/value. It is not that there are no statutory provisions to ensure fair working
conditions for women in India. In fact, the Constitution of India provides equal rights and
opportunities to both the genders. In addition, there are specific provisions for protection and
welfare of working women in many of the labor laws. Unfortunately, most of these legislations
do not cover agriculture and units in small and informal sectors which are the predominant
workplaces of women.
India has the world largest number of professionally qualified women. But it is also very crucial
to understand how welcoming has the Corporate India been towards them. When talking about
the corporate world, though it has opened its doors for women, it has not been successful in
placing them in the top level management. Empowerment is an active multidimensional process
belief and practice. Thus, in essence, it can be safely presumed that empowerment means the
widest possible expansion of the spectrum of choices for women. It does not only mean the
improvement of working conditions or increase in employment avenues for woman but it is the
very concept of control over the factors that influence her life, determines and defines her
empowerment. Women, too, have taken employment in banks on a priority basis since the time
of their active joining of organized jobs.

BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 22

The possible reasons for this phenomenon can be zeroed on factors like gender sensitive work
culture, favorable conditions for personal development, relatively egalitarian environment and
flexibility in timings. The availability of various growth related opportunities at every rung of the
functioning of this institutionalized financial entity has also contributed to its emergence as one
of the most sought after career among women. Which should enable women to realize their full
identity and power in all spheres of life?
It would consist of greater access to knowledge and resources, greater autonomy in decisionmaking, greater ability to plan their lives, have greater control over the circumstances that
influence their lives and free them from shackles on them by custom.

Working Conditions for labor in India

The Ministry of Labor has the responsibility to protect and safeguard the interests of workers in
general and those constituting the deprived and the marginal classes of society in particular with
regard to the creation of a healthy work environment for higher production and productivity. The
Ministry seeks to achieve this objective through enacting and implementing labor laws regulating
the terms and conditions of service and employment of workers. In 1966, the Ministry
appointed the First National Labor Commission (NLC) to review the changes in the
conditions of labor since independence and also to review and assess the working of the existing
legal provisions. The NLC submitted its report in 1969. The important recommendations of NLC
have been implemented through amendments of various labor laws. In the areas of wage policy,
BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 23

minimum wages, employment service, vocational training and workers education, the
recommendations made by the NLC have been largely taken into account in modifying polices,
processes, and programmers of the government.

In order to ensure consistency between labor laws and changes in economic policy, and to
provide greater welfare for the working class. A recent trend has been to seek the creation of a
welfare fund through the collection of levy from which medical benefits or pension provisions
are made. Workers and management may contribute and attempt to set up tripartite boards for
implementation of welfare benefits. In some states like Kerala a large number of such boards
have already been set up to take care of welfare in different sectors of employment. An important
distinction that is popularly made now days in all discussions relating to labor legislation is
between workers in the organized / formal sector and those in the unorganized / informal sector.

3.4 PREVIOUS RESEARCH

Child labour refers to the employment of children at regular and sustained labour. This
practice is considered exploitative by many international organizations and is illegal in
many countries. Child labour was utilized to varying extents through most of history, but
entered public dispute with the advent of universal schooling, with changes in working
conditions during the industrial revolution, and with the emergence of the concepts of
workers' and children's rights.

The concept of nursing work life has not been defined in the available literature
adequately. While some articles have proposed frameworks for examining nurses work
life, no reports of their being tested or evaluated are evident. It is found that a number of
interrelated factors influence nurses work life, as evidenced in several recent reports. It is

BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 24

understood that the quality of work environment and the quality of work life are
influenced by factors which are within the organisation or outside the organisation. The
literature review is mainly focus on quality of work environment which include
demographic and job characteristics and quality of work life indicators.

The researcher suggests that nurses are integrally involved with developing, and maintaining an
organisational culture, high level of patient care and medical ethics. They have to function in
multiple environments that influence their behaviour. In light of the ongoing shortages of nurses
and other health personnel, several studies have examined the quality of the work environment in
hospitals and explored those factors that hinder of foster job satisfaction.

In general, these studies have confirmed the need to improve the working conditions of staff
nurses and have drawn attention to the importance of such factors as nurse-patient ratio, support
services, involvement in decision making, level of compensation, amount of paperwork,
opportunity for professional development, and respect received from hospital management and
physicians However, in the Indian scenario there are fewer studies in this area. This study
attempts to cover key factors of work environment factors such as physical conditions, strengths
and weaknesses of the nursing profession, opportunities to develop professionally, regulating and
limiting factors with regard to the positive work environment

RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research is a voyage of discovery; a journey; an attitude; an experience; a method of critical
thinking; a careful critical enquiry in seeking facts for principles. It is a process of arriving at
dependable solutions to problems through the planned and systematic collection, analysis and
interpretation of data. Search for (new) knowledge/ facts through objective, systematic and
scientific method of finding solution to a problem.

BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 27

Research Methodology uses a qualitative research approach and it is interpretive terms. It is

define research to be Interpretive if it is assumed that our knowledge of reality is gained only
through social constructions such as language, consciousness, shared meanings, documents,
tools, and other artifacts, it attempts to understand phenomena through the meanings that people
assign to them. As a social activity research connects us to those who will use it, to those whose
research we used, through them, to the research that our sources used; Hence beyond technique,
we need to think about ethics of civil communication.

Types of Research:Descriptive: Descriptive research includes surveys and fact-finding enquiries of different kinds.
The major purpose of descriptive research is description of the state of affairs as it exists at
present. In social science and business research we quite often use the term Ex post facto
research for descriptive research studies.

Collection of Data
The information obtained for the study is from secondary data sources.
SECONDARY DATA : Secondary data is the data that have been already collected by and readily available from other
sources. Such data are cheaper and more quickly obtainable than the primary data and also may
be available when primary data cannot be obtained at all. All methods of data collection can
BERI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 28

supply quantitative data (numbers, statistics or financial) or qualitative data (usually words or
text). Quantitative data may often be presented in tabular or graphical form.

These are collected through different ways:1) Internet :- The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of
computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if
they have permission, get information from any other computer .

2) Newspapers: - A newspaper is a regularly scheduled publication containing news,

information, and advertising, usually printed on relatively inexpensive, low-grade paper
such as newsprint. General-interest newspapers typically publish stories on local and
national political events and personalities, crime, business, entertainment, society and
sports.
