2.1 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE GARMENT INDUSTRY

The domestic market for readymade garment, excepting children wears and men's knit
underwear (genji) was virtually non-existent in Bangladesh until the sixties. Like other
3rd world countries Bangladesh is a developing country. Her economic development
depends firstly on agriculture and secondly on industry. Although Bangladesh is not
developed in industry, it has been enriched in Garment industries in the recent past years.
In the field of Industrialization garment industry is a promising step. It has given the
opportunity of employment to millions of unemployed, especially innumerable
uneducated women of the country. It is making significant contribution in the field of our
export income.
Once the cloth of Bangladesh achieved worldwide fame specially moslin and jamdani
cloth or our country was used as the luxurious garments of the royal figures in Europe and
other countries. The British rulers in India didnt develop our cloth industries at all.
Rather they destroyed them and imported cloths from England. Garment Industry Largescale production of readymade garments (RMG) in organized factories is a relatively new
phenomenon in Bangladesh. Until early sixties, individual tailors made garments as per
specifications provided by individual customers who supplied the fabrics.
since the late 1970s, the RMG industry started developing in Bangladesh primarily as an
export-oriented industry although; the domestic market for RMG has been increasing fast
due to increase in personal disposable income and change in life style. The sector rapidly
attained high importance in terms of employment, foreign exchange earnings and its
contribution to GDP.
Most importantly, the growth of RMG sector produced a group of entrepreneurs who have
created a strong private sector. Of these entrepreneurs, a sizeable number is female. A
woman entrepreneur established one of the oldest export-oriented garment factories, the
Baishakhi Garment in 1977. Many women hold top executive positions in RMG industry.
The hundred percent export-oriented RMG industry experienced phenomenal growth
during the last 15 or so years. In 1978, there were only 9 export-oriented garment
manufacturing units, which generated export earnings of hardly one million dollar. Some

of these units were very small and produced garments for both domestic and export
markets. Four such small and old units were Reaz Garments, Paris Garments, Jewel
Garments and Baishakhi Garments.
Reaz Garments, the pioneer, was established in 1960 as a small tailoring outfit, named
Reaz Store in DHAKA. It served only domestic markets for about 15 years. In 1973 it
changed its name to M/s Reaz Garments Ltd. and expanded its operations into export
market by selling 10,000 pieces of men's shirts worth French Franc 13 million to a Parisbased firm in 1978. It was the first direct exporter of garments from Bangladesh. Desh
Garments Ltd, the first non-equity joint-venture in the garment industry was established
in 1979. Desh had technical and marketing collaboration with Daewoo Corporation of
South Korea. It was also the first hundred percent export-oriented company. It had about
120 operators including 3 women trained in South Korea, and with these trained workers
it started its production in early 1980. Another South Korean Firm, Youngones
Corporation formed the first equity joint-venture garment factory with a Bangladeshi
firm, Trexim Ltd. in 1980. Bangladeshi partners contributed 51% of the equity of the new
firm, named Youngones Bangladesh. It exported its first consignment of padded and nonpadded jackets to Sweden in December 1980.
Till the end of 1982, there were only 47 garment manufacturing units. The breakthrough
occurred in 1984-85, when the number of garment factories increased to 587. The number
of RMG factories shot up to around 2,900 in 1999. Bangladesh is now one of the 12
largest apparel exporters of the world, the sixth largest supplier in the US market and the
fifth largest supplier of T-shirts in the EU market. The industry has grown during the
1990s roughly at the rate of 22%.

At present there are about 5000 garment industries in the country and 75 percent of them
are in Dhaka. The rest are in Chittagong and Khulna. These Industries have employed
fifty lacks of people and 85 percent of them are illiterate rural women. About 76 percent
of our export earning comes from this sector. The country's RMG sector, to a creditable
level has relieved Bangladesh from over populous unemployment burden through
providing the largest employment next to agriculture, transport, and trade and industry
sector. This sector has uplifted the neglected section of the population, thus radically
transforming the socio-economic condition of the country. Such empowerment and
employment raised awareness regarding children education, health safety, population

Activities Performed During Internship

30

3.1 ACTIVITIES PERFORMED

RMG industries are the biggest and the busiest sector in Bangladesh. It is an ongoing
process. Almost every garments factories in Bangladesh follows and performs some
distinct and similar functions for production purpose.
I completed my internship from Best Shirts Ltd. and I do feel proud of this. But I did not
have much opportunity to perform my job. Nevertheless I tried my level best to perform
my job which had been given upon me. I had accomplished some important activities
during my internship program. They are:

3.1.1 Fabric Identification:

One of the most important tasks in garments sector is to identify fabrics properly. In my
early days I was taught to identify and select the right fabric. There are several types of
fabrics. They are as follows:

Cotton
CVC (Chief Value Cotton)
TC (Combination of Cotton and polyester)
Yarn-died
Denim
Fillafil
Twill
Cordell etc.

3.1.2 Fabric Inspection:

Defect fabrics should be identified to produce proper product. I had the opportunity to do
this job as an intern. It is not an easy task.

3.1.3 Floor Visit:

There are three main sections in a garments factory. They are cutting, sewing, and
finishing section. I had to remain 7 to ten days in each section. I learnt some manual labor
from there.

31

Eventually working in a garment factory is quite a laborious task. The moral thing is that
you need to work hard diligently. My job was very limited in there as I am an intern.

Learning From Internship

4.1 LESSONS LEARNT FROM INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Knowledge of both theoretical and practical aspects and exposure in the practical field is
must to be competitive in this world. Real work setting is a diverse situation than the

33

classroom leaning scenario, as we enter into real work setting there arises novel problem,
difficulties and which make the person more dynamic and enthusiastic.

The involvements of the intern in the activities of garments provided a lot of knowledge
about RMG sections. The study helped me to draw the outline about the working activity
of garments factories. From the internship I have gained the following lessons:

1. Practical knowledge is must in any field. Knowledge and applicability is related to

each other.
2. Some decisions will be the best when they are made on more practical way rather
than if they are made by sticking with principles and ethics.
3. Growth opportunity, challenging task, motivational program, and training are
some major ways to increase employees efficiency and effectiveness rather than
high payoff and short working hour.
4. The working process of dealing with customers while providing service and
handling complaints and queries should be satisfactory enough to retain the
existing customers and attract new ones. Customers are ready to be linked to
company if they get satisfactory service.
5. Time management skill and its importance were learnt. One has to deal with
numbers of customer at once, so everyone should be equally treated.
6. Working environment must be electrifying where employee can give their full
effort to their work.
7. The topics frequently we studied in our BBA Program, i.e. planning, performance
evaluation, team work etc. are limited only in top level management.

There were some other issues which I have learnt throughout my internship which
may help in my further career growth.
Team work: team work is an important issue to professionals.
Updating: I always should look updating myself to get efficiency in my profession.
Learning and gathering knowledge may help me to grow my position.

34

Motivation: motivation is compulsory. Because without it success can not be brought.

Hard working: hard work, diligence towards work may turn ones success in life as
well as in profession.
Learning From Co-workers: quick learning qualities is a nice aspect. Unless it may
annoy someone. One needs to act and respond as quick as possible.
Exchange Greetings: to exchange greetings always adds an extra value.

Constraints Faced in My Internship

5.1 LIMITATIONS OR CONSTRAINTS FACED DURING INTERNSHIP

The first obstacle that I faced was limitation of scope. I could enjoy my internship as
much as I should do. Since a perfect product is subject to faultless effort, I was almost
every time needed to be just a viewer. Due to the exhaustive nature of this study most
secret and strategic ethics could not be brought in this study. As having the status of an
empirical study, this research is subject to following limitations:

36

1. Time was a major limiting factor while preparing the study. The study
had to be prepared within 60 days of internship period.
2. The interns do not get any specific desk to do the job.
3. Almost no encouragement is given to the intern for the work we did.
That was really a de-motivating factor for me.
4. There were hardly any written documents about the facilities and other
related things.
5. As everyone was busy doing their respective job, they could not provide
me enough time.
6. Sufficient books, publications, and figures are not available. If there
limitations were not been there, the report would have been more useful.
7. A worthwhile study requires the analysis of as much as possible
covering various aspects of the study. But I did not have easy access to
the various types of information that I needed to accomplish my report
properly.
8. Lack of knowledge and experience among the officials.
9. Being a BBA student, I could not apply my knowledge to the factory.
10. The time period was too short.
11. In spite of having the training facilities but that is not adequate for the
employees. As a result, employees can not develop themselves and
cannot show the best performance.
12. I could not have the easy access to the company. I had to face a lots of
obstacle to enter in the company. They even made me wait for a long
period of time.
Thats why working as an intern, is not an easygoing matter.

Recommendations & Conclusion

6.1 RECOMMENDATIONS
The Some recommendations are given below based on the data analysis and at my staying at
Best Shirts Ltd.
Human resources &Management of changes:
Human Resource Development is the main key to improve the efficiency of individuals
and thus improve system performance to improve human resource development
training is an integral part of it. Without skilled manpower the system cannot achieve its
desired output. In analysis of the different components of the system, it was revealed

38

from the analysis of the processors that there is lack of training of the main key
processors and service promoters.
The most important determination for Best Shirts Ltd. growth is the quality of people.
Best Shirts Ltd. can encompass endeavored to recruit and nourish the best available talent.
Best Shirts Ltd. can consistently conduct training programs are well structured and have
been revamped to take care of not only the technical aspects of the jobs but the more
important attributes that concentrate on building leadership and individual capabilities. A
comprehensive change management program has been undertaken to prepare its staff for
the global business environment. Consultants were engaged to design a more suitable
organization structure for seamless operations and reorient job descriptions and key result
areas. The senior management team attended a strategic planning workshop conducted by
international consultants where the mission and vision of the company in the emerging
liberalized environment were validated and core strategies and action plans formulated.
The company would continue to innovate with new and better varieties of fabric, build
supply chain effectiveness for enhanced customer satisfaction, ceaselessly pursue
manufacturing efficiency and rationalization of costs and nurture as well as develop the
talent of our people.
The commitment of the Company to promote a healthy and pollution-free environment is
total. All of the chemical contaminated water is treated at a sophisticated effluent
treatment plant before discharge.

6.2 CONCLUSION
Best Shirts Ltd. is a garments Manufacturing organization commercial office at Borobari
in Gazipur. I as an intern had the opportunity to work for this giant during my internship
program. I was placed at the Compliance and production under the Human Resource

39

Department of Best Shirts Ltd. I got a vast opportunity to observe the overall
Production process of Best Shirts Ltd.
The company has established itself as a garments manufacturer of repute with a customer
profile that includes some of the best names in business. Best Shirts Ltd. not merely as a
supplier of garments but as an integral business partner in value chain of eminent buyers
and retailers world- wide. Best Shirts Ltd. Knows that in the volatile world of quota free
access, winners would be decided based on their international competitiveness. In the
generally prevailing uncertainties and impending liberalization of quota regimes the
design team again played a pivotal role in changing the perception of Best Shirts Ltd. as a
typically Asian supplier with increased customer contacts, collaborative working methods.
This is an optimistic hint of future expansion of Human Resource and Production
department of Best Shirts Ltd. From the study it is also clear to us that which products,
what commodities are used by these customers
So, finally I will say that this internship at Best Shirts Ltd. Compliance and Production
under the Human Resource Department has enlarged my theoretical knowledge of
Bachelor of Business Administration in to some practical knowledge and made my BBA
education more complete and applied.
