KENNETH F. BUNTING
Honorary Doctor of Letters, Honoris Causa (posthumous)
Mr. Bunting worked his way to the top at the SeattlePost Intelligencer to become associate publisher and executive
editor. During his tenure as executive editor, the newspaper
and staff won more regional and national awards, including
two Pulitzer Prizes, than at any other time in the newspaper's
146-year history. He later became executive director of the
National Freedom of Information Coalition, working for a
cause about which he was passionate.
He served on the boards of directors of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the
Associated Press Managing Editors, Newspapers Features Council and the Washington Coalition
for Open Government.
Mr. Bunting was recognized with a number of awards, including the Excellence in
Journalism Award from the Washington State Association for Justice; the Spirit Award from
Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle; and the Ethics Award from Texas Christian University,
where he was an inaugural inductee of the TCU Journalism Hall of Excellence.
In addition to his professional skills, Mr. Bunting was known for wearing cowboy boots
with business suits, a big laugh and his avid support of the Horned Frog football team.
Dr. Boschini is a member of the board of directors of the Council for International Exchange of
Scholars, an organization that works with Fulbright Scholars, and a member of the President's Council of The
Washington Center, the largest independent, nonprofit academic internship program in the United States.
He recently completed serving a two-year term as president of the board of directors of Independent Colleges
& Universities of Texas (ICUT). Previously he served a term as chair of the National Association of
Independent Colleges & Universities (NAICU), headquartered in Washington, D .C.; that organization
represents and advocates in Congress for the interests of private colleges and universities across the nation.
His primary area of advocacy/interest in both groups has been maintaining accessibility for all students to
higher education - particularly through federal and state supported financial aid programs.
Dr. Boschini sits on the board of the State Farm Company Mutual Funds, as well as on the boards of
the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Van Cliburn Foundation and the Moncrief C ancer Institute. His
wife, Megan Boschini, is also involved in a variety of activities in the city of Fort Worth. Currently she serves
as chair of the board of directors for the Gill Charity, Inc. They are both committed to ensuring that they,
and TCU, are active participants in the Fort Worth community.
Dr. and Mrs. Boschini are members of the Addison & Randolph Clark Society at the Centurion
level, members of the Chancellor's Council, and members of The TCU Frog Club. Both can be found at a
variety of events across campus on any given day. They also spend a considerable amount of time traveling
across the state and country, advocating for Texas Christian University. Both have participated in various
Frog Camps for new students, including Frog Camp London, Frog Camp Roma, Frog Camp Seville and
C asa Nueva Frog Camp. In the summer of 2012, Dr. Boschini was excited to be among the inaugural
participants in the Frog Camp Washington, D.C., experience for incoming students.
Dr. and Mrs. Boschini have four children: TCU graduates Elizabeth Anne and Mary C atherine;
Edward Mark, TCU Class of 2016, and Margaret Ellen, TCU Class of 2018.

THE FLAGS
The twenty-nine flags displayed on the field represent the countries of our one hundred international
students who are receiving their diplomas today. The following countries are represented: Bolivia, Brazil,
Cameroon, Canada, China, Colombia, Croatia, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala,
Honduras, India, Iran, Israel, Jamaica, Mexico, Nepal, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Russian
Federation, Singapore, Spain, United Kingdom and Vietnam.
THE MACE
The mace is a symbol of the strength of a university. In Medieval times, the mace was a weapon designed
to protect the dignitary in a procession. Academia borrowed that tradition from royalty designating it as a
symbol of the power of a university and of its leader - power shared with the faculty. Maces, similar in
appearance to ancestral weaponry, usually are constructed of wood or metal and may have symbols of the
institution worked into the design. TCU's mace was created to commemorate the inauguration of Chancellor
Michael R. Ferrari in 1999. TCU staff member, Robert Kramer, a master carver, made the shaft of the mace.
It is fashioned from a wooden beam from the first building constructed at Add-Ran Male and Female College
in Thorp Spring, Texas. The head of the rnace was created by international sculptor and TCU parent, Seppo
Aarnos, and proudly bears the horned frog, adopted in 1897 as the University's mascot. An amethyst at the
center of the head glows with the colors purple for royalty and white for purity.

To cover a portion of the construction costs, Addison and Randolph sold their
houses in Fort Worth, and Randolph's wife, Emma parted with two of her treasured
properties. AddRan was a family venture in every respect.
Thereafter enrollment turned up but peaked around four hundred fifty. The
struggle to match income and expenditures intensified. The College had no
endowment and faced gloomy tomorrows. What to do? Preacher-teachers in the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Brothers turned their school over to the
Church in 1889 and placed in control a self-perpetuating board of trustees. This
transfer of assets and authority made sense because the Christian Churches in Texas
had "endorsed" and "adopted" the private school at the outset.
A Christian college, AddRan bore no resemblance to today's Bible colleges. The
stated purpose of the institution, according to the Charter, was to support and promote
"literary and scientific education." The Clarks organized the curriculum into six areas of
study: English, ancient languages, mathematics, physical sciences, mental and moral
sciences, and social and civic history. The co-founders intended to educate the laity women and men - as well as preachers. And they did.
To open the way for progress, Trustees moved the school to Waco in 1895 and
then to Fort Worth in 1910. There AddRan, having been renamed Texas Christian
University, claimed a significant place in American higher education. Addison and
Randolph Clark stepped aside more than a century ago, but their work continues to
unfold.
