Using Online Assessments for Student Data Collection

The purpose of this workshop is to prepare educators to use digital/online tools to assess students
for data collection. They get the opportunity to get hands-on with three online tools where
students take an assessment to give instant data. The educators will work with online tools to
build assessments for students based on the content they teach. The educators will also see how
online tools provide simple and easy ways of collecting and analyzing data.

Workshop Objectives:
1. Participants understand the goals and principles of giving assessments and collecting data.
2. Participants will demonstrate knowledge by exploration of a new online assessment tool.
3. Participants will build an online assessment to be completed by students online.
4. Participants will use preference to choose the online platform appropriate and useful to them
and their students.

Workshop Activities and Assignments:

Introduce attendees to benefits of using online assessments by using the PowerPoint. Ask
questions throughout to see (by a show of hands) who has used these particular online tools to
assess.
Instructor Preview- Discuss struggles with paper/pencil assessments. Provide links to
Kahoot!, Padlet, and Goformative so that, as a group, we can preview the websites.
(15 Minutes)

Use screenshots of websites to explore the building of assessments. As well as, where to
find the data from the assessment. Teachers ask questions.
(5 minutes)

Ask attendees to access the online tool of their choice (Padlet, Kahoot!, Goformative)
and create an assessment, based on their content area, they could use with the online tool.
For Padlet they must create a Padlet that explains the assignment and
expectations.
For Kahoot! They must create a short review with questions for students
to answer.
For Goformative they must create a short formative assessment using
multiple choice or constructed response questions.
Links or codes for the assessment are posted to the Padlet or Edmodo
wall.
(10 Minutes)

Evaluation: Before leaving, attendees will complete a 5-question survey on Kahoot!

about the training and their personal feelings on the online assessment tools. Instructor
