O Tannenbaum

How to pick the perfect

tree

Experience an
Irish Holiday in
Lancaster

aise your hand if youve made

a live Christmas tree faux pas.
Come on, dont be shy.
Were not suggesting you uprooted a
squirrel-infested, sappy behemoth a la
the Griswold family in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.
But maybe youve tried to put a 9-foot
Christmas tree in a room with an 8-foot
ceiling.
Or perhaps you watched your tree
branches sag to the floor under the
weight of Grandmas heirloom ceramic
ornaments.
Or maybe you discovered too late
that Hotel Tannenbaum was harboring
a growing family of spiders or hundreds
of praying mantis babies.
U.S. consumers purchased 26.3 million farm-grown Christmas trees last
year, according to the National Christ-

mas Tree Association. If youll be one of

the millions heading out for a live tree
this year, then check out these tips for
choosing the perfect tree for your home.

1.Know your space.

Measure the height of the area in your

home where you want to put the tree,
and dont forget to allow space for the
tree stand and tree topper, says Randy
Hunt of Hunts Christmas Tree Farm in
Millersville.
Width is important, too, Hunt says.
Depending on the size of the room
you have, you can take up a big chunk
of your room with a big, wide tree, he
says. More customers are buying narrower trees these days, he says. Children dont like them because they cant
get as many gifts under them.
When the sky is your ceiling, trees in
the field or in a lot appear a lot smaller
than they actually are, Hunt says. Hunts

increments, but not all farms and tree lots
do, so be sure to bring a tape measure with
you when youre choosing a tree.
So how many people actually show up at
Hunts tree farm with a tape measure? Not
a lot, he says with a laugh.

2.Choose the right variety.

Although personal taste is important,

there are other factors to consider, including the type of decorations you want to put
on your Christmas tree. Firs in particular
Frasier, Concolor and possibly Douglas
are better if you have a lot of heavy ornaments, because they have sturdier branches, Hunt says. White pines, with their long,
soft needles and longer branches, work well
when decorated with lighter touches, like
tinsel, garland and bows, Hunt says.

3.Check for freshness.

Once youve chosen a tree, gently pull a

branch through your enclosed hand, Hunt
recommends. If one or two needles come

off, thats OK, but you shouldnt be getting

a handful of needles.
The National Christmas Tree Association also recommends bending the outer
branches to make sure they are pliable. If
they snap, the tree is probably too dry.
Musty odor and discolored or brown foliage
are other indicators that you should probably move on to the next tree.

4.Keep it watered.

For the first day or two, the tree may

empty a bowl of water overnight. If
you let the bowl go dry, the cut will scab
up and it wont be able to take in water,
Hunt says.
Also, keep the tree away from heat registers and other sources of heat to prevent it
from drying out.

5.And what about those bugs?

The Penn State Extension recommends

vigorously shaking the tree before bringing
it into your home. Also, remove any birds
nests or egg masses you may find.

Proper care
will help your
tree last longer,
Hunt says. Exactly how long?
Well, that depends somewhat on the tree.
A blue spruce might last two weeks, but
a fir can last up to four weeks if properly
watered, he says.

Get back to nature with an easy

o holiday home is complete without

a beautiful wreath gracing the front
door, welcoming all who enter.
Sure its easy to pick up a ready-made
wreath at a store, but its just as easy and
more creative to make your own, says
Karen Waltemyer, a naturalist with Lancaster County Parks.
The best tip is to head out into the woods
with permission, a friend, pruners and a
small saw, she says. The best material to
make homemade holiday wreaths can be

growing wildly in your backyard.

She says wild grapevines make a terrific
base to build off of, with their woody yet
manageable vines and natural beauty.
Once youve found the grapevine you
want to use, Waltemyer suggests pulling
down and cutting away a 12-foot length
with a lot of thinner vines attached.
When making a wreath from wild grapevines, round and twist your wreath right
away, she advises. If you wait too long, the
vine dries and becomes too brittle to bend.
Start twisting it into a circle, wrapping the
vine around the inside and outside of itself
wrapping it around the original circle you

made. It takes practice, but what a fun way to get out in the
woods.
One youve formed the basic wreath shape, its easy to decorate your wreath by cutting various evergreens, Waltemyer says.
Each tree or shrub has a unique color of green, some with
hints of blue, she
says. You can tuck in some leaves,
trims
from
red stem dogwood for a pop
of natural red, or pine cones,
sweet gum stars, feathers, sea
shells, seed pods. The options are endless!
For berries, she suggests
using ones from winterberry shrubs for a great
red color, or even holly if
you have tough hands.
She cautions against using a pretty alternative, oriental bittersweet.
The red berries are nice
when twisted but spread
this noxious weed to the
point its found everywhere,
she says, adding that crafters

With a tightly

she says.
But, if you want
to make sure your wreath
is extra secure, consider using floral
wire to help tighten up the wreath, she adds.
And when youre done, prepare to enjoy your creation for quite a while.
A well-made wreath will last a long time, Waltemyer says.

Or maybe its a big seasonal layout in the basement, where lights

In this age of video games,
where zombies roam, comic book

Groff should know. Hes president of the Choo Choo Barn, a
landmark local attraction since
1961. Its a miniature re-creation
of Lancaster County, with 22 operating trains on a gigantic layout
thats just across the street from
the biggest train set of all, the
real-life Strasburg Rail Road. Adjoining the Choo Choo Barn is a
small gift center, which includes
Groffs train shop.
You can step in and peruse
specialty items such as a Lionel
replica of the Pennsylvania Railroads classic GG1 electric passenger engine, which will set you
back $500. In fact, you can easily
walk in here with $1,000 and go
to electric train heaven. However,
Groff says, You can get started
on a lot less than that.
And getting started is what its
all about. Lionel makes starter
sets that average $200-$400.
That might sound like a lot, but
your set will include a locomotive, two or three cars, a loop of

Theme trains
In the trade, the trains, housed
in their own storage boxes, are
known as Ready-to-Run sets
and come in every variation from
basic freight and passenger trains
to pop-culture and other themes.
These might include references
to the Philadelphia Phillies (the
Strasburg Train shop has it, for
$322.95) an entire train with a
Hershey Chocolate motif (you can
see that one at Cool Trains, and
its very cool indeed), Peanuts,
the United States military and the
UFO recovery spot known as Area
51.
And then theres the Polar Ex-

press and Thomas the Tank Engine. Heres where many a kid can
get his or her first introduction to
model rolling stock.
Eleven years after the release
of the beloved childrens fantasy
film, voiced by Tom Hanks, its Lionel counterpart is still chugging
along.
Obviously, the Polar Express is
still very popular, says Groff, who
sells the complete set for $399.99.
The train is your classic heavyweight passenger set thats
railroad-speak for the coaches
that preceded the streamliner
era decked out in winter wonderland colors, but its handsome
enough to display all year.
And then, theres Thomas.
Thomas is ALWAYS popular,
says Groff, noting the ever-smiling
tank engine and his trailing oh-soBritish railway carriages. Parents
might smile, too, if their children
want Thomas under the tree; a set
can be had for as little as under

LNP | LANCASTER, PA

$150.

Family-friendly
Speaking of kids, they are to be
kept in mind when choosing a
train set. The Polar Express and
Thomas the tank Engine sets, are
passenger trains, but Symonds
thinks freight is a bigger hit with
the junior crowd. Freight trains
carry stuff, anything from Legos
to Army guys, he says.
And, on a different topic, when it
comes to choosing a choo-choo,
size matters.
Model trains come in several sizes, known as gauges or scales The
most iconic is O-Gauge; this is the
size most people think of when
they picture the words train
set. Gauge is determined by the
width of track between the rails;
in O-Gauge, this means 1 inches.
Theres also HO, or Half-O, which
is very popular, but more suited
to grown-up model railroaders.

And then theres N-Scale, ideal for

small spaces such as apartments.
But, as both Symonds and Groff
note, O is the way to go for that
family set. Kids dont want to be
messing with tiny trains. They
want to get their hands on them.
Kids have small hands, Symonds says. They want to hook
the cars together, and put the
wheels on the track. Smaller trains
might frustrate them, he adds.
Symonds asks potential buyers
to ask themselves, Are there kids
and pets in the house? (Groff
says with amusement that NScale and cat hair are not a good
mix). So if Fido or Mittens knocks
over your set, O-Gauge cannot
only take it, but the kids can jump
back in and put the rolling stock
back on the rails.
And, besides, O-Gauge makes
an impact when you enter your
holiday decorated living room.
You can walk in and see it, says
Symonds.

STEPHEN GUNZENHAUSER~MUSIC DIRECTOR

Retailers have done their homework, she says. Whether it is a

particular display, catalog, sale or
coupon, it was designed to draw
you in and create an impulse for
you to buy. If you are not careful,
you can easily stray from your list
and spend more than you intended.
Holidays are also emotional
times, and that can wreak havoc
on a wallet.
We can rationalize and justify
purchases that we wouldnt normally make, she says.
For instance, if your 13-yearold randomly asked for $75, you
might think twice about it any
other time of year, but some holiday purchases, specifically electronics and technology, can cost
upward of twice that much.
We rationalize that purchase
with a simple phrase: Its Christmas, she says. And of course,
you cant just have one present
under the tree, so we keep spending.

Getting started

Shober says its easy to set up a

budget and there are a variety of
methods she suggests.
Some financial experts recommend using a calculated formula.
They recommend spending no
more than 1.5 percent of your annual income we prefer net income over gross income on
holiday spending, she says.
For practical purposes, making a
list is essential, she says.
How will you ever know what
you are spending unless you track
it? she explains. The list should
include more than just the gifts.
There are many other expenses
associated with this holiday that
are not on your monthly flow
chart, such as decorations, parties, the ugly Christmas sweater,
Christmas cards with postage,
wrapping paper, special donations, cookies, turkeys, trips to see
the lights, the list goes on. You
need to consider them ALL.
And, once youve figured out
what youll be spending, you need
to know where that money is
coming from.
My hope would be that you had

year and you have it covered,
Shober says. If thats not the
case and you are using credit to
purchase, you need an exact time
in which you will have it paid in
full. If you cant pay it off by next
Christmas and commit to saving
so you dont have to use the card
next year, you need to adjust the
budget.

Keep track

There are different tracking

methods you can use to monitor
holiday purchases, much in the
same way youd track everyday
spending.
A tool that works for some is

the envelope method. Each cat- coupons or sales, she says. Why
egory on your list has an envelope pay full price if you dont have to?

Chocolate makes the holiday complete

M

any families have their own traditions when it comes

to holiday fare, but those who want to wow their
guests with something new this holiday season can try the
following recipe from Michael Recchiuti and Fran Gages
Chocolate Obsession (Stewart, Tabori & Chang).

METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION

Make your memories

last with Custom
Picture Framingg!

CHOCOLATE-DIPPED SESAME TUILES

n 1/2cup plus 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, preferably unhulled
n 1/3cup granulated cane sugar
n 1/3cup unbleached all-purpose flour
n 1/8tablespoon kosher salt
n 2extra-large egg whites, at room temperature
n 3tablespoons unsalted butter with 82 percent butterfat,
very soft
n 8ounces tempered 70 percent chocolate for coating
cookies
n Flavorless vegetable oil for the pans
Bake: Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line the bottoms of four
12-by-18-inch sheet pans with parchment paper. Lightly coat
the paper with flavorless vegetable oil.

AN
I TA L I

BISTR

Combine the sesame seeds, flour, sugar and salt in a medium

bowl and whisk by hand until combined. Mix, dont beat, the
egg whites into the sesame seed mixture with a rubber spatula.
Stir in butter with the spatula until no streaks of butter remain.
Measure 2 level teaspoons batter onto a prepared sheet pan.
Using a small offset spatula, spread it into a round about 3 1/2
inches in diameter. Repeat with the remaining batter, putting 8
rounds on each pan and leaving 1 1/2 inches between them.
Bake the trays, one at a time, until the cookies are a uniform
golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from the oven and,
while the cookies are still warm, run the offset spatula under
each cookie and place them upside down on a rolling pin so
that they curl around the pin. Leave the cookies on the rolling
pin until they cool completely and have become brittle, a
matter of seconds.
Dip: Dip the convex (smooth) side of each cookie into the
chocolate and then smooth the chocolate with a small offset
spatula. Place on a work surface, chocolate side up, and let sit
until the chocolate sets, about 30 minutes.
Store in an airtight container in a cool place, not in the
refrigerator. They will keep for up to one week.
Makes about 48 cookies

CATHY MOLITORIS

LNP CUSTOM CONTENT CONTRIBUTOR

hen it comes to presents, gift baskets

pack a punch. You can tailor a gift basket to a recipients specific interests or include a variety of items for general appeal.
You can make your own gift baskets by gathering
items on a theme food, sports or music, for example or you can take advantage of companies
that do the gathering for you.
Wendy Alexakos, a consultant with LaBella Baskets and Gifts, says buying a pre-packed gift basket
can be a huge time saver.
Sending a gift basket can save someone countless
hours driving around to stores or walking around the
mall trying to find just the right gift for someone,
she says.
And, there is truly a gift basket for everyone.
Gift baskets come in a variety of sizes and themes,
so the sender can give their recipient something a
little more personalized, something that matches a
particular holiday or activity, she says.
Part of the appeal of gift baskets comes in the basket itself as well as the contents.
Gift baskets are beautifully arranged, so I personally like the presentation of a basket, she says.
There are many little gifts inside, so the recipient

can enjoy looking through the basket to see all of

the goodies theyve received.
Gift baskets offer a way to give a gift that has longlasting appeal as well.
I enjoy sending flowers to family and friends, but
sometimes I like to send something that will last longer and a gift that may keep on giving for more
than a few days, depending on what the contents of
the basket are, Alexakos says.
And its easy to think beyond a basket, making
whatever container you choose part of the gift as
well.
At LaBella, gifts come in boxed towers, speciallydesigned boxes and other unique containers.
Our Taste of Italy uses a colander filled with items
to have a lovely pasta dinner, Alexakos says.
Need some inspiration? Visit Alexakos website,
wendysgifts.labellabaskets.com, or check out these
ideas for everyone on your list:

Pull up a chair, relax, make new friends or visit with old ones.
Come and enjoy dinner at our house. Well be serving
Thanksgiving Day dinners from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.
Enjoy fresh roasted turkey, baked country ham,
cranberry relish, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes,
vegetables, homemade pumpkin pie, and much, much more.

Moms and Grandmas

Spa basket. Does mom need a break? Alexakos asks. If she cant find the time to get
away, bring the spa getaway to her.
La Bella offers more than 20 types of spa
baskets for the special woman in your life, or
create your own. Choose a woven basket or a
fun container like a dishpan perfect for storing all the items in your gift, but also useful for
soaking hands or feet in a spa treatment. Include items like face masks, hand cream, massage oil, hand towels and loofahs.
Gardening basket. Pick up hand tools, gloves,
seeds or bulbs and tuck them all into a small
watering can.

Chocolate basket. Treat your recipient to a tasty basket full of sweets.

You can focus on high-end chocolates like Ghirardelli or Godiva, or go
for local flavor by choosing candy
from Lancaster-based companies like
Miesse or Evans Candy.

Dads and Grandpas

Sports themes. Is he a football fanatic or maybe he is an avid golfer, Alexakos says, noting that LaBella offers
a basket called Caddy Snacks, featuring nuts, cheese sticks and more,
in a mini golf bag. For a truly special
basket, include tickets to a sporting
event and round out the basket with
less-expensive gifts like golf tees, plastic cups
or other items featuring the logo of his favorite team.
Grooming. Who says men dont like
to be pampered, too? Gather some of
these suggestions from pioneerthinking.com razors, shaving cream, aftershave, shower gel, soap and a nail-care
kit.

The same goes for gifts you receive, she says.

If your neighbor brought you
a treat and you think you have to
reciprocate, stop. It was a gift and
you deserved it.
Its also OK to say no and opt out
of budget-busting activities. If
the office gift exchange doesnt

thank you, she says.
And above all, remember what
the holidays are really about.
The holidays are special. I am
not convinced that $616 billion in
predicted consumer sales is what
makes it special, Shober says.
Its traditions, family, the reason
for the season. So if your budget is limited, create memories.

shoofly pies, pretzels, mustards and candies.

We package all of these in a decorative
gift box, Rumpf says. Its a special treat
for a gift for a special person.
Boyer says Millers and the other locations offer perfect solutions for recipients
who crave something sweet, or something
savory.
When shopping for people that have a
sweet tooth, we suggest our famous madefrom-scratch shoofly and chocolate pecan
pies, she says. For those that like savory,
we have a large assortment of jams and jellies that are made with fresh fruits and vegetables from local Amish farms.
In addition to selling pies online, the businesses offer jarred goods, cookbooks and
gift cards.
When shopping for long distance friends
or relatives, giving local food as a gift is like
sending them a taste of Lancaster County.
Its special, Boyer says.
Horn says giving food gifts is easy to do,
but does require some planning.
Place your orders early if ordering on-

line to avoid any rush shipping charges,

she says, adding that its important to pay
attention to ship dates for baked goods,
which are perishable and may only ship on
certain days.
Check to see if your recipient has any
food allergies before giving the gift as well,
Boyer advises.
Its also important to know the shelf life of
the food item youre giving, especially if its
being shipped, she says.
Always ask for the shelf life and what the
best method of packaging is from your retailer to ensure freshness and quality upon
its arrival, she recommends.
And think beyond just the food item, Horn
advises.
Its great to include recipes when giving
products, so people have an idea of different ways to use the products, she says,
noting that Kitchen Kettle has a recipe section on its website. If someone receives a
product and they do not know what to do
with it, other than eat it from the jar, this
gives them a few ideas.
