The world is becoming increasingly

aware of the need to resolve the issues
associated with world energy consumption
and the threat of climate change due to
greenhouse gas emissions. Both require
fundamental innovations in the worlds
energy landscape. The sustainable
generation of energy will play a key role in
coping with these issues, especially when
considering the desire of the industrialised
world to retain its standards of living, and
the rest of the worlds determination to
adopt to those same standards. Realising
this revolution requires a new generation
of specialised engineers and scientists.
Research is needed in order to technically
develop, optimise and integrate significant
renewable energy sources, such as solar,
wind, biomass and geothermal. Equally
important are new energy carriers such as
hydrogen and innovative batteries. New
technologies need to be integrated into
existing socio-technological networks.
New forms of energy distribution must be
investigated, as well as new energy market
structures, and new means of intelligently
satisfying the needs of a complex modern

society. Sustainable Energy Technology

graduates will achieve a standard of
expertise in the world of energy that will
stand them and their employers in good
stead in the future.
Career prospects
The significant increase in world demand
for energy and the anticipated increase
over the coming decades require skilled
technologists in this strategically important
area. Sustainable energy technologists
will be able to command positions across
many areas of industry. Developments
such as the liberalisation of energy
markets, globalisation of commerce and
production, and the increasing demand
for sustainability in the energy industry,
require energy specialists with more than
technical knowledge alone. People with
a broad knowledge of sustainable energy
will not only be needed in the energy
industry and related sectors such as supply
and transmission, but also for research
into new renewable energy solutions
in engineering, production, transport,
infrastructure, consultancy

So here I was, facing the big decision

what shall I study for my masters degree?.
After I did my bachelors in Mechanical
Engineering here at the TU Delft, I decided
to see which master programmes they had to
offer. As I had already completed a 4 month
internship at the company WEnergy Global
in Singapore, which was all about applying
renewable energy in south east Asia, I was
quickly drawn towards the master SET!
SET has a very versatile array of courses
giving you a taste of everything, which is
exactly what I like about it. During the
programme, you can choose to narrow down
your interest in one of the fields, amongst

equivalent are eligible for admission after
completing a bridging course. They are

technologies. Finally you narrow it down to
one thesis topic, which will allow you to dive
deep into one subject.
It might sound clich, but it is now more true
than ever that we have to make significant
changes in our excessive energy consumption
and production! When I look back on my
decision, it was almost a no-brainer to
step into the field of renewables. Doing my
internship abroad motivated me enormously
to be more active in the field of sustainability
in my future career. I would love to be
part of the solution!!

Sustainable energy is rapidly growing

in many parts of the world. Its large-scale
implementation calls for novel improved
technologies as well as significant changes
to the whole energy system. This includes
improved energy efficiency and cheaper
solar energy, wind power, and electricity
grids, but also brings with it a new
requirement: the storage of renewable
energy. After all, the fluctuating output of
solar and wind power during the day and
nighttime and over the seasons means
that renewable energy is not generated at
the same rate that energy is demanded.
Therefore we need to find ways to store
renewable energy at times of peak
production so we can use it later when
demand is high. At the faculty of Applied
Sciences we are working on solutions
for converting and storing renewable
energy. More specifically, we are studying
materials that enable the use of hydrogen
related fuels lithium and other batteries,
fuel cell electrolytes and catalysts as
energy carriers. Much of our research
concerns the chemistry and physics of the
active materials, which often need to be
nanostructured. New or modified materials

Professor Fokko Mulder, Materials

for Energy Conversion and Storage

are being developed, based on insights

generated by fundamental research.
We have excellent research facilities for
materials fabrication as well as instruments
that can be used to analyse materials from
the atomic/molecular level right up to the
level of the device prototype. For the best
students there are often opportunities to
stay on as a PhD candidate.

Main advantages of 3TU for students

The 3TU MSc SET programme enables
you to study at three universities in the
Netherlands. The programme focuses
on areas of innovation developed with
state-of-the-art engineering expertise.
Upon graduation you will have obtained
an outstanding qualification profile. The
3TU Masters combine excellent subjectbased competences, research skills, the
capacity for independent analysis and
synthesis and an advanced capability to
apply knowledge in practice. The core

programmes of the 3TU SET Masters are

largely identical and can be followed at any
of the three locations. You benefit from the
special strengths of the three universities
by choosing a specialisation at any of

the three locations. You are registered at

the location of your choice, but you are
automatically co-registered at the other
locations to ensure access to the facilities
of all three.
