Material and passenger hoist

The SCQ120TD material and passenger hoist is developed to
transport construction material and site personnel. The material
and passenger hoist is not only can run along a vertical rail but
also at a curve rail with a maximum angle of 18. It is very suitable
for the construction of shaft structures, chimneys, tall building
structures and in this case, the construction of the bridge pylons.
Safety is paramount in the design and the use of the hoist. The
hoist is equipped with various type of limit switches to control the
speed of the vertical movement, the maximum travelling height,
etc. Besides that, it is also equipped with overload sensor, buffer
springs system, enclose fencing design to ensure the safety of the
users.
The main components of SCQ120TD hoist includes: hoist car, drive
unit, mast tower (standard section), mast ties, etc. The general
specifications of the hoist are listed in Table 1.

Mast tie
Mast tie (Figure 3) is used to secure the mast tower to the
completed section of the bridge pylon. The mast tie is installed to
the bridge pylon using anchor bolts positioned and embedded to
the bridge pylon before concrete casting.
The tie-to-tie spacing should be less than 7.5 m.

To cater for the curve nature of the bridge pylon, different type of
mast ties are used at different location along the mast tower.

Proposed erection methodology

Generally, prior to the erection of the material and passenger
hoist, it is important to consider the following work items and
checks listed as follows:
-

Check for site accessibility for the delivery of all the parts of
the hoist.
Verify delivery checklist for correct type, quantity and
member parts identification.
Check for any major defects (e.g. defective steel members,
welding joints, etc.)
Check dimensions.
Check lifting inserts (on the foundation) and all lifting points.
Check for adequate crane capacity / unloading equipment
at site.
Check for adequate lifting gears.
Check storage areas if the member parts has to be stored
for future erection.
Check for adequate power supply.
Check all workers assigned to installation works are
qualified. All workers to wear proper PPE.
Check for provision of safety barriers at surrounding area.
Unauthorized construction personnel are prohibited to
enter the site area.

The erection procedure of the material and passenger hoist will be

discussed in the following section.

Passenger hoist erection

Procedure
i)
Check if all embedded items in the concrete
foundation are installed as per drawings and
specifications.
ii)
Install the base frame to the concrete foundation.
Adjust the level of the base frame and apply the
required 350 Nm torque force to the M24 anchor
bolts. The base frame shall be installed within the
lever tolerance of 0.2% in all directions.
iii)
Lift and rig the standard section to its designated
location with the use of wire ropes / chain slings /
belts and with proper lifting gears.
iv)
Connect each standard section using M24 bolts
L=255mm and tighten with the required 350Nm
torque force.
v)
Repeat steps iii and step iv until four (5) standard
sections have been erected.
vi)
Lift and rig the hoist car to its designated location
with the use of wire ropes / chain slings / belts and
with proper lifting gears.
vii) Install the rack and pinion mechanism for controlling
the vertical movement of the hoist car. The roller and
the travelling track shall be adjusted to within the
specified tolerance (0.3 0.5 mm in the transverse
direction).
viii) As the construction progresses, erect the additional
standard sections as required. To achieve the
required curvature of the mast tower, washers are
inserted between the two standard sections. Refer to
Table 4 for the required washer thickness at each
section.
ix)
Install required mast ties at required elevation based
on the recommendation in Tables 2 & 3. Using
theodolite, adjust the level and the verticality of the
installed mast ties.
x)
Once all the parts are properly erected and installed,
adjust all the limit switched to comply with the

requirements, e.g. the height limit switch should

ensure the hoist car to stop at a maximum of 150-200
mm after its platform passes the height of the last
level; the travelling track should have at least 1.5 m
protrusion from the top of the hoist car, etc.
Test the system at least three times after the height
limit switch has been properly installed. This is to
ensure that the hoist works as intended.
Check and adjust accordingly all the wheel clearance
to ensure smooth operation.
After each erection, ensure that all bolts are tightly
fastened as per required specifications.
To conduct final inspection to seek the acceptance of
the material and passenger hoist from all parties.

Refer to Appendix B for the drawings presentation on the

erection procedure.
Important notes:
i)
During the 1st load testing operation, the hoist car will
be fully loaded at the ground level. Loading at any
intermediate height / the highest level is strictly
prohibited.
ii)
During loading operation, load should be uniformly
distributed and overloading is strictly prohibited.
iii)
Hoist operator shall operate the hoist after he/she
has fully understand the operation manual.
iv)
If any technical problems arise in the testing
operation of the constructed hoist, the operation
should immediately be stopped. The hoist will be
checked, repaired and inspected prior to resumption
of the operation.
v)
The hoist is prohibited to be used with these
conditions: stormy weather and heavy fog conditions.
The hoist is not safe to be used in these conditions,
operation should immediately be stopped, hoist car
shall be positioned at the bottom of the mast tower
and the power supply shall be switched-off.

intended.
Check the travelling track for the hoist car, make sure
the travelling track is properly aligned and free from
any manufacturing defects and all joints are within
the recommended tolerance.
Parts to be lubricated must be lubricated timely
(please refer to the manufacturers requirements).
Check and make sure the operational door access of
the hoist car work as intended.
Check the wheels alignment. Make sure that the
alignment and clearance of the wheels conform to
the requirements. If it does not conform to the
requirements, adjustments shall be made in a timely
manner.
At the end of each installation, check the reliability of
