iF product design award 2011
The iF product design award covers all areas of
product design. It serves as a platform for designrelevant innovations, thus recognizing todays
globally networked world and its related dynamics.
Since 1953, the iF product design award has been
recognized as a label for excellent design.
A continuous dialogue with manufacturers and
designers forms the basis for furthering its reputation as a trend indicator for outstanding achievements in design and in design innovation. The
awards ceremony for the iF gold awards, which
honors the 50 best competition entries, takes place
annually on the opening day of CeBIT.
The iF product design award yearbook documents
all award winners of each competition and provides
an exciting insight into the world of successful design. Furthermore, as a reference book, it reflects
current trends in outstanding design.

Manufacturers and designers are invited to register their entries

in one of the 16 categories of the iF product design award 2011
by 30 September 2010. The jury, consisting of internationally
renowned experts, will choose the best submissions during a twoday jury session. Award winners will receive the famous iF label.
50 of these award winners will be chosen and honored with the
sought-after iF gold award for particularly outstanding achievements in design.
The awards ceremony and the announcement of the 50 gold
award winners traditionally takes place on the opening day of
CeBIT at the Hanover exhibition Centre: for the 2011 awards
ceremony this will be 1 March 2011. Products that receive an
iF award stand out from the competition due to their excellent
quality.
We wish all participants every success for the iF product design
award 2011!

Whats new?

Participation

There are no changes to the iF product

design award 2011 compared to the
previous years..

As "seal of good design" known the world over, the iF product

design award honors outstanding achievements in design and offers an important platform to have your product's design quality
professionally validated by an international jury of experts. Manufacturers and designers of mass produced products that have
not been on the market for longer than three years or that have
entered production in the awards year are eligible to compete for
an iF product design award 2011.
In order to reflect the variety of the submissions, iF divides the
iF product design award into 16 categories.
Requirements for the entries
All submissions must be original products. In exceptional cases
(e.g. very large exhibits, preproduction prototypes, etc) models,
scale models or large format photographs (60 x 90 cm, boardmounted) may be submitted.

Registration
You can find the online registration form for this
competition in my iF.

After we have received your registration including two photos of your

product ...

In the "product information" text fields of the registration form, we need a short description of your
contribution, its functionality and design in both
German and English (max. 650 characters per
language, including punctuation). The jury will use
this short description as a basis for their decision.

1. We will send you an email confirming that we have received your registration and photos. This email will also contain an entry-ID for your entry.

If you receive an award, we will offer you to use this

description again for the presentation of your product in the iF product design award yearbook 2011
and in the iF online exhibition. This description must
be provided in both languages (German and English).
Use the registration form to upload 2 photos for
each competition entry in the following format:
Image size: max. 300 x 300 pixels
Larger images (max. 2 MB) will automatically be scaled down
Color format: RGB
File format: JPEG (.jpg)
The images are a necessary part of the registration.
Please have these images ready and available before
you open the registration form.
In order to provide the same conditions of participation for everyone, each participant in the iF product design award can submit two photos only. Only
in the case of complex products or systems, may an
exception be granted. If this applies to you, please
send an email to the iF team that is responsible for
the iF product design award. iF reserves the right to
have the final decision on this matter.

The entry-ID is composed of the competition-ID and a five-digit number that

identifies your entry and allocates it to your personal data. It is very important that you use this entry-ID for all communication, shipping, product- and
packaging labels since we will otherwise not be able to identify the entry.
2. You will receive an invoice for the participation fees. This is payable via
bank transfer (see bank details). Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash- or
credit card payments.
Please note that the invoice address cannot be changed once it has been registered.
Please check whether your registration is complete and contains all the necessary data.

page 9 | iF product design award 2011

Jury
An international expert jury has been commissioned
by iF and will discuss and evaluate all submitted
entries in a dedicated, critical and constructive way.
The selection process for the iF product design
award is not public, and takes place over two days.
During this process, it will become clear which
products from which companies and designers meet
the evaluation criteria for outstanding excellence in
design.
Each jury member can only participate in two consecutive juries. If a jury member is directly connected to one of the submitted entries, they are no
longer allowed to vote. The decision of the jury is
legally binding, also as regards the pre-selection
results. Legal recourse is excluded.

will be invited to the jury. The competition entries
need to be send either via mail or via a forwarding

at our logistic partners Khne + Nagel (see delivery
address).
Multiple entries can be sent as one consignment to
Kuehne + Nagel. All competition entries, as well as

Self assembly: setting up your product yourself

Products that have to be mounted, that are extremely large, difficult to handle or very heavy as well as products with delicate parts can be registered for
self-assembly. You can do this in your participation area 'my iF', 'my current
entries'.
The decision as to whether a contribution can be set up by yourself or
whether it will be set up by iF rests with iF. Small products such as cell phones
or navigation devices cannot be set up by participants.
If you set up your product yourself, all necessary material and tools must be
provided by you. Resources such as forklifts and ramps have to be provided
by you or can be rented via iF's logistics partner Kuehne + Nagel. Please
inform your forwarding company if this applies to you, since any additional
costs concerning delivery and collection will be charged to you. If you decide
to set up your contribution yourself, you are also responsible for the
disposal of any packaging material. If you set up your contribution yourself,
you are automatically responsible for dismantling and collecting your contribution after it has been evaluated by the jury. This also applies to products that have received an award.

All award-winning entries will be presented in the
iF product design award exhibition. This exhibition
is open to the public every year from March to
August at the Hanover exhibition center. Participation in the exhibition is obligatory for all winners of
an iF product design award.

with up to two images and a description in German
and English. This exhibition is not limited in duration.

of these special prizes takes place in a dedicated ceremony each year on the opening day of CeBIT.

The iF product design award yearbook, a comprehensive and attractive document, is a constant and
important part of the competition. All award-winning contributions to the iF product design award
will be published, including two images, information on the designer and a description in English and
German. This excellent publication serves as a reference tool the world over and is therefore a great advertising instrument for each participant. Each

CeBIT in Hanover. The publication of all award-winning contributions in the iF product design award
yearbook is obligatory for all award winners.

All award winners of the iF competitions will receive
points in the iF ranking. 20 points are given for winning an iF award. For gold award winners, 100
points will be given to both the designers in the
iF creative ranking and the manufacturers or clients
in the iF company ranking. The basis for the iF ranking is formed by all iF competitions run over the last
three years. The iF ranking is updated after each
