Welcome Time
What You Need: Crazy Laws Activity Page (optional)
What You Do:
Ask kids to share a rule or law. Maybe it is a rule at home like you cant hum at the dinner table
or a rule from school like you cant go to recess until you clean your lunch table. It can be a rule
they have to obey or a rule that doesnt apply to them at all.
After each rule shared, ask the group if they think the rule is helpful or important.
If they think the rule is helpful or important, they give a thumbs up, and if they think the rule is
useless and not helpful, they give a thumbs down.
(Optional) Read some crazy laws from the Crazy Laws Activity Page.
What You Say:
You came up with a lot of rules that were helpful and some rules that were simply crazy. [Transition]
Lets head to Large Group where we will hear about some laws or instructions that will be very
helpful for us.

Activity #1
What You Need: Attitude Puzzle Activity Page, Bibles, pencils
What You Do:
Hand out the puzzles, pencils, and Bibles to the kids.
Kids will look up the references listed and match the reference with the Bible verse listed on the
page.
For each Bible verse, kids will fill in the missing words.
5-6 Challenge
What You Need: Bibles, paper, pencils, mobile device (optional)
What You Do:
Challenge kids to use their Bibles to find verses on serving, focusing especially on verses giving
direction on how to serve and what our attitude should be when we serve.
Show kids how to use a concordance in the Bible. If they are having trouble, another option is to
use a mobile device to access YouVersion or BibleGateway.com and do a keyword search.
This is a great opportunity to talk to kids about the context of the verses they find. Encourage
kids to read what happens before and after the verse. What are the circumstances? Who is
writing the story?
If a passage confuses them, encourage them to look up the passage in a different translation.
What You Say:
What do these verses say about serving and lending a hand? (Serve cheerfully, enthusiastically,
wholeheartedly, freely, without complaining, etc.) Your attitude when you serve is important. Think about
our story today in Large Group. Lets imagine you had to show the new kid around school and you were
extremely grumpy about it. Sure, you agreed to lend a hand to help someone, but how do you think
your grumpy attitude made the new kid feel? Do you think your grumpy attitude demonstrated to the
new kid how much God loves him? How you serve others is as important as getting the job done.
Remember to [Bottom Line] have a good attitude when you lend a hand. And when you serve with
a good attitude, you reflect Gods love to others.
If you lead mostly older kids, consider asking these discussion questions:
What are ways to show a bad attitude? What are ways to show a good attitude? (This is a great
opportunity to discuss how attitude is shown in our words, our actions, and our body language.
Ask kids to share words, actions, and body language that demonstrate good and bad attitudes.)
When is it hard to have a good attitude when you are lending a hand? Are there times when its
easy?
What makes the difference between it being hard or easy? What can you do to help yourself be
more motivated to help out even when it is hard? How could this be life changing for you and
others?

Prayer Time
What You Need: No supplies needed
What You Do:
Pray with kids using the Bottom Line: [Bottom Line] serve others because of what Jesus did
for us. Thank Jesus for being a great example how to serve. Ask for His help to reflect His love
to the world by lending a hand to help someone else.

Activity
Opposites

#2

What You Need: Bibles

What You Do: Discuss the Bible Verse Matthew 5:16
What You Say:
Lets say our verse together: Let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good
things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16, NIrV) Can
anyone tell me what it means to let your light shine? (Live your life in a way so others can see the
reflection of Jesus in your words and actions.) Yes! Jesus is the Light of the World and we want to
reflect His teachings so the world will see how awesome Jesus is. What are some ways you can let
your light shine? (Doing good things, being kind, making wise choices, treating others like you want to
be treated, serving others, etc.) One great way to let your light shine is to [Bottom Line] serve others
because of what Jesus did for us.
If you lead mostly older kids, ask these discussion questions:
To be a disciple of Jesus is to train to live like Jesus lived. What are some things we can do to
train ourselves to be Jesus disciples? Why is this important? Is this still as important today as it
was when the original 12 disciples lived on earth? Why or why not?
In todays world, what would the life of a disciple of Jesus look like? Envision your school, your
home, the football field or basketball court, or other places where you spend time. What would it
look like to be Jesus disciple in the places you live? How would this make a difference in your
life or in the lives of others?

Activity #3
What You Need: No supplies needed
What You Do:
Gather the kids in a circle.
Review the memory verse for the month (Matthew 5:16) from the last activity
Send one child outside of your area; she will be the Guesser.
Silently select another child to be the Chief; everyone will have to copy whatever he does.
The Chief should start making movements/motions while remaining seated, such as tapping his
head, snapping his finger, etc. The Chief should change his movement every 30 seconds or so.
Everyone should follow what the chief does.
When the Guesser returns, she gets three tries to identify the chief through watching the group
and trying to notice who is leading the changes in the motions.
After three guesses, say the verse together, reveal the Chief, and then send the Chief out of the
area as the new Guesser.
Choose a new Chief and play another round.
What You Say:
Letting your light shine is a lot like what we just did in our game. To know the leader, you had to look
closely at what everyone was doing. When we do good things with a good attitude people will notice
and wonder why. When they find out we go to church and we follow Jesus, they might want to do the
same. But if we do good things with a bad attitude, people wont care at all about following Jesus; there
isnt any point. Anyone can be grumpy and complain! But when we follow Jesus, our leader, He helps
us stay cheerful even when its hard. Everyone wants to know how to do that! Thats why its so
important to [Bottom Line] have a good attitude when you lend a hand.
