WORKING SPARK: PRODUCTION INNOVATION

Anatoly F.Usov, Ph.D. and Vyacheslav A.Tsukerman, Ph.D.
Kola Science Centre, Apatity, Russia
The russian scientiests were worked on the original and effective method of the distruction of
extra strong rocks, ores, rozen ground, construction blocks - AN ELECTROIMPULSE
METHOD OF BREAKING MATERIALS.
Physical explanation of this phenomenon is suggested.
The area of technological application of the method includes hole drilling, shaft sinking and
working drivage, blocks cutting, slot-cutting in the rock mass, surface treatment of the rock mass
and blocks, crushing and disintegration of the material, destruction of construction blocks and
other. The action of the channel of electrical discharge in a solid is, in many respects similar to
the effect of an explosive, and its main features - its practically localized nature, and a possibility
to change, in a rather simple way, the parameters of the energy liberation, create additional
technological opportunities and prerequisites for a more effective use of energy. High efficiency
of energy transfer from the source (power-supply system) to the discharge channel and favorable
conditions of the body destruction with breaking conditions from within provide the least powerintensive mechanism of destruction of solids.
When using the electric pulse method of destruction, the main tool is, in fact, an electrical spark.
As far as the effect of electric pulse destruction, unlike other mechanical methods does not
depend as much on the hardness of rock, the new method is especially efficient for drilling of
extra strong rocks and frozen ground.
Possibilities of electric pulse disintegration are discussed with emphasis on high selectivity of the
process as compared to mechanical comminution methods especially when applied to
polymineral ores. Some operating plants applying this principle are described the plants used
either for mineral research purposes or for obtaining pure monomineral fractions or for treatment
of gems to be faceted.
There are as well some original technical proposals of use of the electric pulse method for
surface treatment of blocks and bulky minerals, getting them ready for sawing in plates, art
treatment of blocks and bulky minerals, extraction from the rock mass of large stone blocks (cutout method), finishing of sub-standard and worn out reinforced concrete products providing
recycling of the reinforcement and concrete for designated purpose.
Many other original offers, realizing unique peculiarities of a new way of destruction of
materials be available.
