NP Speaks....
Dear Active Citizens
Greetings from your National President
Somebody said you have to love what you do, but that's not
necessarily true. What is true is that you have to love the
opportunitythe opportunity to build life, future, health,
success, fortune and our JCI organisation. Knocking on
someone's door may not be something you love to do, but you
love the opportunity of what might be behind that door.
For example, a guy says, I'm digging ditches. Should I love
digging ditches? The answer is, No, you don't have to love
digging ditches, but if it is your first entry onto the ladder of
success, you say, I'm glad somebody gave me the opportunity to
dig ditches. I'm going to do it so well, I won't be here long.
You don't have to love it, you just have to learn to appreciate
development opportunity and appreciate the person who brought
you the good news, who found you. Dear members and officers
appreciate the person who believed in you before you believed
in yourself; appreciate the person who said, Hey, if I can do it,
you can do it.
If you will embrace the disciplines associated with the new
opportunity, you will soon find that your self-confidence starts
to grow, that you go from being a skeptic to being a believer.
And soon, when you go out person to person, talking to people,
you will find it to be the most thrilling opportunity in the world.
Every person you meetwhat could it be? Unlimited! The next
LOM member could become a friend for life. The next person
could be an open door to retiring. The next officer could be a
colleague for years to come. It's big stuff. And sometimes in the
beginning, when we are just getting started, we don't always see
how big it is.
So, before you are tempted to give up or get
discouraged, remember all success is based on long-term
COMMITMENT,CONNECTION,CARE and a few other
stepping stones along the way. You might not like the stone you
are on right now, but it's sure to be one of the stones that leads
to great opportunities in the future. Now it's our time to take
action to Organise big PR events and work on projects with
sustainability solutions . So my dear active citizens step out and
take action on your plan because if the plan is good, then the
results can be miraculous.
Love the opportunity

Being Active

few hundred meters uphill there was an acute pain

in my back due to my obesity, me weighing 92 Kgs
found it very difficult to breathe. Soon I had to give
up the idea of going up with my friends climbing the
beautiful mountain.

Being active is an amazing thing. Everyone wants

to be fit, healthy and active in life. Being active has
been a continuous challenge for everyone everyday.
Very few have actually been successful in being
active. It was nothing less than an interesting story
of mine from being obese to fit and active. I like to
share my story with everyone so that it may help
someone in need. This change happened in me when
I followed 4 simple steps which everyone can do.

It was a heart wrenching moment for me as I was

real close to my dream destination and wasnt able to
reach it. I didnt find words to describe my feelings
coming down the mountain to our camping site to
wait alone for my friends to return. My morale was
so low that didnt speak throughout my journey
back.

On a chilly winter evening in Delhi, we 5 roommates

decided to go to Gangotri in Uttarakhand. We
searched Google Maps to find out route to Gangotri
a 500 KM drive from Delhi. We packed our bags
and got few provisions for the next week into our
Santro and started. The morning journey along the
banks of Ganges travelling upstream had some
breathtaking views. The greenish blue waters of
Ganges gushing through the valleys is a spectacle
to watch. Our tedious journey on the ghat roads led
us to our destination only to find Gangotri closed
for winter.

That was in November 2010, and today I am a

different person altogether. I recently successfully
ran the half marathon (21.1 KM in less than 3
Hrs) and preparing for full marathon (42.2 KM).
This transformation from obese to being fit just
happened in matter of few months. I didnt had
fancy equipment, undergone any kind of medication
or treatment to bring about this change. All I did was
follow 4 simple steps that made this possible.

Our souls didnt let us go back, we found a way

to camp at the foot of Gangotri National Park in a
small village Harshul. Made arrangements to trek
up the near by mountain to Sath Tal - 7 Frozen
Lakes. As we started trekking the mountain just a

1. Do It Now
It all started with a simple yet powerful step of half
an hour morning walk. Before this I had gone for
morning walk many times but with the goal only

to lose my weight. This time I made it a point that

whether I start losing my weight or not I will be
walking daily for the rest of my life. I made it a part
of my daily routine.

change started showing results and my weight loss

program was again right on track.

If you want to find reason to procrastinate you will

find plenty like I will start after buying good shoes,
I will find company and start, I dont have a track
near my home, Walking on hard surface isnt good
for my knees, I will start from Sunday, Winter
mornings are cold will start in summer, I dont
have time, and many more.

We lose interest when we are asked to eat same food,

do same work or meet same people over a length of
time. We look for change. This is common in any
aspect of life. Routine is the killer of joy in life. To
bring back the joy in life we need to try new ways,
be creative and challenge ourselves.
I started challenging myself into running from
walking which changes my total body fitness
from being obese to fit. I was persistent enough
in challenging myself that I now became a half
marathoner. This challenging spirit helped me a
lot in my career as a software engineer in keeping
myself abreast with the changing technologies
which is a must in my field of work. Challenge
yourself daily so that you would eventually end up
in rewriting your goals for better ones which will
ultimately make you better. Lets live up to the JCI
theme of Be Better.

If you are thinking of a perfect business or a perfect

relationship or a perfect day it is only possible by
starting to do now, not just planning. If you want to
achieve something dont wait do it now, it doesnt
matter how big or small it is.
2. Challenge Yourself
As I started to make progress by losing some
weight, it suddenly came to a halt I wasnt losing
any more weight. Then I came across an interesting
fact, that our body is a wonderful machine which
gets adapted to whatever it is doing as a routine. I
have to challenge my body to continue my progress
to reach my goal. I started challenging by increasing
the intensity, distance and duration of my walk. This

Although I started on my own, seeing the dramatic

change in me, there were others who showed

interest to join me in my morning walks. Soon I
wasnt walking or running alone, we were a team
of morning walkers. This team is very crucial in
my prolonged morning routine. The feeling in the
morning was full of fun filled moments and positive
energy.

making progress quicker than me. This has been a

leadership challenge for many as their team looks
up to them.
I started updating my knowledge on diets and other
exercises like yoga, plyometrics, running form etc.
I started reading periodicals and other journals to
know more. I started experimenting with various
foods that are available to create diet plans that
suit our local cuisine and are also healthy. Started
working on my running posture and increased my
speed and started preparing for the half marathon.

There had been many days where I didnt feel like

going for the morning walk. Phone calls from the
team members enquiring about my absence were
really crucial in making me go back to the track.
Whenever I was on a trip out of town their calls to
enquire why I wasnt there at the track were very
heart touching and made me wish to be on track.

In life we are endowed with responsibility to our work,

family and society. To live up to the expectations we
need to update ourselves continuously and learn new
things. In this competitive world of ours only way
we can grow or stay afloat is to update continuously.
This doesnt need much of your time. Only less than
an hour a day knowing about latest trends in your
field and trying to understand and learn them will
do.

I also created various visual reminders of my goal

in my home, office and places I visit regularly. Once
such reminder was my college picture in which
I was fit and healthy, which I set it as my mobile
wallpaper. These kinds of reminders I used for my
professional and family goals in various places to
keep me focused away from distractions.

These 4 simple steps have given me a wonderful

life. I shared a major part of my journey from obese
to being fully fit. These have helped me in my
profession, family and social life. Being active is
amazing. I wish you my dear friend health, joy and
prosperity.

4. Update Yourself
As I became one of the motivational factors to my
team of morning walkers and other fitness seekers
in my circle, it became an added responsibility to
know more and be better than them as they are

1-Communicating Expectations
Successful leaders are great communicators, they
encourage performance and motivate their team.
This can happen only if the team knows as to what
is expected from them. Clarity in communication is
very important in translating vision into actionable
objectives. Hence focus of your communication.
2. Investing Time
Investment need not always mean money, even time
is an investment.
We could invest on relationships , knowledge , assets
etc..no investment is a waste, these investment will
go a long way in your professional and personal
life.
We are often judged by our wise investments
The more you invest in relationship and knowledge,
the better empowered you will become as a person
or even as a professional. So be a wise investor.
3.Being an Example
Leading by example is easier said than done. Very
few leaders can walk the talk . successful leaders

are mindful of their action and they practice what

they preach.
A leader is accountable to his team and he should
always be aware that he is being watched,he should
remember that he is in the public domain of his
team.
They watch every movement of their leader. Hence
the leader not only be able to set examples but also
excel in his responsibility..
4 Facing problems head on
Problems are part and parcel of every day life.Look
at problems as challenges.
Real leaders tackle issues head on and they know how
to discover the root cause of the problem. They take
charge and act .Leaders dont procrastinate ,instead

they pull up their socks and get to the root of matter.

They never avoid uncomfortable circumstances.
Be a successful leader get ahead, face challenges
head on.
5- Challenge to think
Successful leaders must understand their Team
like the back of their palm. They should know the
mindset & capabilities of each member of his team.
Leaders use this knowledge to challenge their team
to think, stretch and to achieve professional & their
personal goals
Such knowledge will also help the leader in creating
strategies which would inspire his team to accept
new challenges.
A responsible leader is very dependable to his team

JCI India Challenge

and they trust his capabilities.

6- Feedback Mechanism
Feedback is an integral part of communication.
To make a great team , right kind of feedback
mechanism should be put in place.
It is often observed that feedbacks are with held
and they are revealed only in the annual appraisal
sheet. How can such feedback help your team
member? How can anyone move forward unless
they know where they have reached? And how
much more effort they should put to achieve their
goal? The leader should ensure a continuous flow
of information between him and his team members.
Such teams will succeed.
To make a great team, right kind of feedback
mechanism should be put in place, where in a
continuous flow of information takes place between
the leader and his team mates.
7- Reward
A leader is successful because of his team and he
knows it very well.
Very few managers know the art of appreciation.
A true leader understands the importance of
appreciation. He gives due credit to the individuals
responsible for achieving a particular objective.
Appreciation and reward will go a long way in
keeping any individual motivated.

March2012
2015
August

Timing of reward is equally important. It should be

given as soon as possible without much delay.
Such simple act of the leader will inspire the team to
achieve greater heights.
8- Commitment
Commitment is that differentiate between an
ordinary person & a professional. It is a big
challenge to find people with commitment. Only
people with commitment are dependable and they
are ones whom we can trust.
Before we look for commitment in others it's always
better to have an introspection about ourselves.
Did I ever break a promise?
Have I always kept my word?
Did I always complete promised tasks without
reminding?
I am sure it will be very difficult to get affirmative
answers to the above.
then it's time to change our attitude .
9- Evaluation
Evaluation is a very common word often heard in
management discussion. Evaluation is making of
judgement about the amount, number or value of
something. In one word it is assessment.
We human beings are experts in evaluating

JCI India Challenge

others, people don't miss any opportunity to evaluate

others, they are often judgemental too.To understand
evaluation, it is a systematic determination of a
subjects merit, worth and significance ,using criteria
governed by a set of standards.
Let's be judicious while evaluating others because
everybody has their own reasons let's appreciate
that.
10- communication
Communication is a tool to convey ones thought
to others. Today there are many tools available to
communicate, electronic media has opened a flood
of mediums where instant communication can be
transmitted to thousands of people .
The emergence of mobile technology has opened a
totally new medium for communication. The real
challenge of such technology lies in the ability to
communicate with minimum words. Every word
we use in such media should contribute to the
message.
No amount of intelligence matters if one cannot
communicate with clarity. Ensure that your message
is conveyed without much distortion.
This requires good skill, thank god this skill can be
developed through practice.

Why is media important : Media is important in

todays competitive world because it influences
society in many different ways. But could
we say it changes the way we behave or our
attitudes towards things we perceive in the
world we live in?

But why does this make media so

important? : Media is important source
because it gives us some sense of being
there and havind an existence. We have a
sense of being part of something greater
then ourselves and that is why things like
Twitter and Facebook and other means
of social media are so popular because
they make you feel that you are part of
a wider community always interacting
with each other. It gives individuals
the ability to create their own personal
identity, through mediums like Facebook
people can add details about themselves
like what their hobbies are and who they
perceive themselves to be.

Media is all around us, our society is constantly

interacting with social mediums for their
own gratification, that gratification could be
keeping in contact with friends and family or
it could be sharing your experiences with the
world through pictures and videos. Another
gratification could be finding information
easily and quickly using things such as the
internet. The progress of Media has gone way

Media is important with regards to

there have been some major changes that
have revolutionised the way we use this

the best part of this media is that it is instant and
easy to access.
Mobility is a fairly new way that media has
an importance on society. We are now able to
access, comment on and upload information
instantly wherever we are through devices such as
smartphones.
Having had a look at the importance of the media,
a question whether media has an adverse affect on
the society.
There is a theory by Crouteau Hoynes 1997 the
hypodermic needle this theory states that passive
audiences are directly influenced by media. For
example a producer creates a text and the meaning
is passed almost sub consciously

Now a days we all are so much engrossed using

social and other networking sites regularly, so why
dont we all give a little time towards the promotion
of Jaycees and its various impactful events through
media and grab more and more Young Leaders to

into the audience and supposedly this influences the

audiences attitudes and behaviours.
This could be said for not only television but for
other Medias like advertising and radio. This view
is a very Marxist view another view could be that
its not the producers that influence the audience
but the opposite where audiences through media
influence the text and the producer with things like
social media. This is a liberalist view.

I believe that media has a huge importance, impact

and influence, there would be no possible way
we could live without media and information that
we derive from the media. But we are all unique
individuals and have our own belief systems
and backgrounds to be directly influenced by the
media.

Although both of these theories have valid points I

dont believe that society could be classed as either
of these concepts because society is so divers there
are too many people with their own habits, hobbies,
attitudes and behaviours that differ from these
views.

FLWH
NOVELTY IN WORK JURISPRUDENCE

JCI.Sen..Annapoorna Sharma
JCI Puttur,Karnataka
Zone - XV

Happier work place ignites the dormant inner

energy within the human mind and creates a finer
manifestation which is having a commercial value.
Tension free and pressure free work zone energizes
the human mind and motivates to do works in
efficient way. As we know that in the womb of sea
precious pearls and stones are there, likewise in the
depth of human mind creative energy is there. It is
nothing but an intellect of a human being. In the
shore less ocean of reality man finds only what he
seeks.
During olden days it was the practice of fixed
hours work in the organization of employer. As it is
known that, change is the law of nature today, work
space is shrinking i.e. becoming too small due to
the idea of flexible working hours. And also work
force is shrinking i.e. difficulty in filling jobs due
to lack of suitable talent available in the market.
Balancing work life concept gained weight. FLWH
has widened the sphere of work. FLWH gives ample
scope for this kind of employees to reach their goal
and there by helps to make their cherished dreams
come true.
The latest concept promising an extraordinary
shift in the way of work is that of flexible working.
Flexible working has enormous potential to improve
productivity, increase employee job satisfaction
and bring about direct cost-savings to the business.
If an employee is given a choice in the hours and
place of his working, his stress and frustration
level goes down tremendously. Higher the comfort
levels, better the results and also fewer the chances
of errors. Flexible working also results in reduced
overheads and office staff achieving an improved
work life balance. Employers do choose to offer
flexibility to retain the right staff and to extract the
best from staff.
As workers are becoming more sophisticated and
global socio-economic patterns change in todays
JCI India Challenge

modern society, the way we work is also changing.

In a world where consumers are demanding better
products and services, employers are also faced
with the challenge of finding skilled workers to
suit the business needs. By instituting flexible work
arrangement policies, employers are able to not only
attract skilled individuals but retain them for long
term.
There is no one-size-fits-all work solution for
every organization, as each business or industry
is different in nature. Each organization should
continue to study and improvise over time on the
types of flexible work arrangements that would be
most suitable for their businesses.
The idea of fixed work hour is of an ancient origin.
Traditionally most of the companies followed
the structured environment work. The concept of
flexible work hour is popular today in the era of IT
and Globalization. Innovations in the technology
also contribute for the development of Flexible
Work Arrangements. Future generations will reject
traditional work practices due to the advent of new
concepts like FLWH to the Work Jurisprudence.
FLWH is having multi dimensional characteristics.
Even if it is observed from the human rights
perspective, constitutional dimensions and labour
law it is justifiable to introduce FLWH. In this
situation of talent crunch this is one of the best ways
to retain talented, trustworthy employees. It is the
right time to cultivate FLWH culture in the work
arena. FLWH strives for harmonization of work
life and personal life of employees. FLWH has
changed the philosophy of work as such. It is the
wise decision to adopt the edifice of FLWH concept
for best suitable departments of a company. With
introduction of flexible working let air of Change
enters into the world of work and improve quality of
life for employees and employers self.

CHOICE?
OR CHANCE?
Most of the time we are very much worried what
others will think of us. Yes it has been the habit even
when we buy a shirt we just start thinking about what
others opinion would be if we wear the new shirt.
The human mind always expects appreciation from
others but most of the time we fail to appreciate or
recognize people. Most of the time we criticize our
mom or sister or aunt for their tasteless preparations
but we never appreciate them if they prepared the
dishes in a tasty way. Just start appreciating people
around you and see the miracles going to happen in
your life. The real happiness emerges with in you
once you start recognizing people around you even
for their small attempts.
Appreciation is the simple way to admire people
because the whole world is expecting someone to
recognize. Starting from the great scientists who sent
missiles to moon till the street vendor, or a home
maker who prepared a new dish, everyone expects
the recognition from the people around.
Have we ever appreciated the teachers who have
taken the class in a marvelous way? Have we ever
appreciated the child who drawn pictures in its own
creativity? Have we ever appreciated the traffic
police who regulated the traffic in a proper way?
As the world is running faster we fail to admire the
people around us. It has been a habitual action for us
but if you start look at the people around you and if
you start appreciating the people than the inner joy
blooms.
Just say thanks to the auto driver and appreciate him
for his nice drive. Appreciate the security of your
company for the way he keeps the time in record or
even the way he salutes you. If you feel life is going
bored than just looking deep in to the people and start
recognizing their simple steps they have taken. The
real happiness will spreads in your heart and the way

different. Appreciating the people is not a matter of
choice its a matter of chance. What will happen if
appreciate others thats the question always comes
in mind first. In turn just ask what will happen if
I appreciate. Take a chance or the opportunity you
get for appreciating people. Your office colleagues
will start love you and come closer, your family
members will come lit bit closer if only you are the
person of appreciating them.

Always praise the people for their betterment and if

you really sees their efforts are good. Never hesitate
to appreciate people as they really need it. Most of
the time we blame that we dont have time at all to
appreciate due to hectic schedule, but the fact is we
fail to understand others feelings. The attitude tends
to feel the feel of fellow human beings and stand
on others shoes will make you feel the tendency of
appreciating or recognizing others.

If you understand, it does matter how much you

have but what really matters is what you do with
what you have. Practice this simple value always in
your life will help to lead life going towards success
in a happy way. We have the word of power and just
pat the people to proceed further make them to get a
boost to move further. The inner confidence will sure
raise if you start finding other persons potential.

Dear Friends lets take the chance of appreciating

fellow human being and the choice is yours to take a
chance. The moment you start observing people will
help you to get a consciousness and sure people will
never forget you in their life time.

Lets start your day with joy of appreciation and see
